uk techno veteran broom is one of the most consistent producers in the game and on neon, he delivers four killer dance floor tracks. inspired in equal parts by the swirling, dub techno of chain reaction and the insistent, loopy techno of mid to late-90s jeff mills, the release starts with the steel-plate percussion and churning chord builds of -m19-. broom keeps his focus on that approach for -energy-, where doubled-up claps and clanging chords create an eerie but urgent sensibility, while the title track is a slightly less visceral affair thanks to the inclusion of a sleepy vocal sample amid the churning keys. finally, -involver- sees broom focus his energies elsewhere, its acidic, grimy groove coming across like steve bicknell in a bad mood.

grain remixes !! ashworth s grain lp captured the imagination of many in the music world on its release last year. after releasing two original ep s from the album we get an excellent remix package from three leading lights in electronic music. what better way to wrap up his debut with needwant. the ep serves up three very different remixes all for a different occasion and mood. the ever reliable dorisbourg, who remains one half of the lauded genius of time, takes a laidback electronica approach but with techno at it s heart. newcomer kris davis and yost keep the original feel of cork but provide a sensual but progressive vibe. while simon haydo drives all the way to the end with his remix of fireworks. great production on show across the ep for the emerging producer ashworth.

the first spinning plates ep back in february was picked up by print media and radio tastemakers from ra and dj mag to b.traits and moxie, whilst djs as diverse as ivan smagghe and francois k slotted it into their dj bags. as such there has been much demand for a second release, and now it arrives in the form of a fascinating split ep from scene veteran andy rantzen and relative newcomer bruno schmidt, who helps a&r for the label. in fact it was bruno who came across andy’s tracks during a late night youtube session. andy, who remixed inxs and severed heads back in the day and is a sydney based producer who has been active for three decades, had upped a load of his old demos to youtube in the faint hope that one day someone might find them. and damn are we happy he did, because they are brilliant affairs that sound like little else. for his part, bruno has been a louche resident and hifi creator alongside andrew james gustav and gwenan and delivers an exceptional stripped down late night trip/early morning trip.

austrian shooting star project niereich was founded in 2010. as dj/live act, producer and label co-owner of audio stimulation recordings he serves as a true multi-purpose weapon. while playing at the biggest in- and outdoor events and his releases being supported by the biggest dj s across the globe, he undoubtedly set his mark on the international dance scene. niereich is known to be rocking as there s no tomorrow. this urban format ep is packed with techno bliss and consists of 3 strong, dark and deep tracks.

benedikt frey crafts a musical aesthetic that (much like the esp institute) might only be seen in its true form from a birds-eye view—a whole greater than the sum of its parts. his playful indifference to genre specifics and pre-prescribed instrumentation or production techniques makes for a loose and refreshing collection of work, and this debut for the esp institute, the lobbyist, serves up an incongruous three tracks so bewildering and narcotic we’re already impatiently fiending for more. on side a, the title track is no less than a medieval assault. led by a stomping war drum and a blasting bass synth that might literally have caught the studio on fire, an erratic array of clanking percussion, hi-hats and cymbals push us into a sinister corner where his whispering chant grants us the smallest bit of humanity before continuing with the beating. on side b, cupids delight (ft tcb) and gravel both explore variations on beauty—the former in a blur of ghost-like vocals smeared in harmony across a low-slung machine drums, and the latter evoking a tropical affair gone psychedelic, complete with drawn-out disorienting marimba and ritual clave/tom arrangements. welcome home brother benedikt, what took you so long?

berlin-based palms trax continues adding to his run of quality efforts with the forthcoming release of his high point on low ground ep: impressive effort number two for the dekmantel imprint. serving up three retro-futuristic killers, donaldson parades his ability to touch on the many different corners of contemporary house music, whilst delivering heavyweight dancefloor standards. the title track blazes a beaten-up vocal snippet over stanked-out synths, stretched to a breaking point across a low-riding bass line. a stabbing moroder-esque bass line dominates cloud city , whilst paws equals pure and raw broken-beat bliss with a pinch of acid.

whilst its neighbour has always taken the plaudits on the party front the steely city of sheffield has its own house history, with much of it residing in the warm buzzing darkness of the studio. its here that we find our latest robsoul rookie. a fresh name for the label, but a producer who is far from new to the game. tommy vicari jnr’s first release was pressed to the black gold and released back in 2004. since then there have been sporadic outings, but the last two years have seen a reinvigorated tommy roll out over ten new releases and play a huge part in putting sheffield s house music firmly back on the map. threshold of eternity sees tommy drop the northern grit to replace it with shimmering warmth and sunshine vibes across all four tracks. fidgeting rhythms, chopped samples and groove-heavy beats and bass are spliced together to create an essential feel-good release.

damien lynch is a gentleman youve met in a past life. emerging with this debut, he steps nicely into a home at the esp institute. on side a, we‘re invited to the heights, a transcendent state where the negative space between the notes is equally as important as his lush instrumentation. damiens build-up of warm analogue machines twinkle and stab, leading way to a memorable hook, a squelching chord melody full of live nuance and energy. on side b, safe house plays out a similar theme in terms of arrangement, however, the ethereal space damien creates with the kalimba and driving arpeggios elevates us to an even higher plane, where his lead floats gracefully across the stereo spectrum, blanketing the fast-paced rhythms with a calming sense of purity. were serious when we say that these two songs will guide you toward enlightenment.

not an animal return with their 2nd installment, this time from ess o ess (aka chris stoker and jamie blanco). their original offering, cantillate, isn t an easy beast to identify, being equal parts swamp-rock and techno. imagine you ve stumbled across an ephedrine and moonshine fueled rave in a deep louisiana bayoux in the year 3000, and you re close. add an out-there vocal refrain, and you ll start to appreciate why this is a particularly distinct record. relocate said rave to a some kind of space ship hitting hyperspace, with photon torpedoes fully armed, and you ll suddenly find yourself with the first remix, as created by ene records owner chida.

the girl and the chameleon will probably fall under the genre tags of acid, electro and techno but it is so much more. witschkowski has been responsible for exemplary electronics throughout his career and this latest is undeniably some of his best. the album sees the exaltics don a dust mask. warehouse parties, strobe lights and fog machines and the 90s underground acid scene are definite influences. but theres more. across thirteen tracks and two slabs of wax the jena artist takes you on a journey into his world. gnarled and clinical grooves, caustic 303 encounters, depraved dancefloor destroyers and soothing machine music. a sonic trek through tough and taut textures with touches of tenderness. an album that shows a depth of ability, an enviable talent and a knowledge of how to break floorboards.

the last few years has seen parris make a name for himself across a number of scenes, to the extent he is just as likely to be found spinning records for butterz as he is putting records out on berceuse heroique. here at idle hands we first touched base with parris many moons ago when he bought copies of the first release on his soundman chronicles label into our shop. as it is one of our favourite labels we were intrigued to hear what he would come up with as producer himself. needless to say we were impressed. presented here are two tracks that perfectly reflect his sound and our own a nod to techno here, a weighty bass line there, a love of reverb everywhere and all with a view to being played in dark rooms late at night. the 12 inch of burr and blue is idle hands last release of 2015 and we think it rounds off nicely what has been a great year for the label.

this release was born of a cross country trip with an 808 drum machine by thomas ragsdale aka winter son, alongside jozef k, resident of famed manchester and ibiza clubnight sankey, as they join perseus traxx to hammer electricity out of machines. with it&#700,,,s rim shots and claps and other transistor rhythms reverberating across vast distances of space, side a is stripped back and deep from the outset, pushing forward as scattered tones, arpeggiations and disjointed voices leave their trails vanishing from perception. side b tightens up from the previous reverbs and throws acid into the mix, as the two join perseus traxx and the sound becomes more raw and urgent as the three of them jam on their chosen machines.

two of paris’ most respected artists get together for their second collaborative extended player this year. dan ghenacia and chris carrier have been entrenched in the electronic scene in their hometown for a long while now, both men building a strong rep through consistently great music and dj performances. earlier this year they joined forces on ‘just a sin’, released via carrier’s adult only label, now they’re back with the follow-up on apollonia. across three deadly tracks, the duo explore their love of music making machines to the fullest – each track taking its name from ‘sweet heart’, translated into different languages. ‘schatzi’ works off a modular synth, bursting out of the blocks with a wobbly bassline which supports a range of subtle effects together with infrequent vocal clips. as the track progresses warm rising pads and female vocal snippets create an entrancing atmosphere. next up we get an arabian twist with ‘habibi’. a pervading air of mystery presents itself right from the off, with warped voices lurking in the background as the rhythm lures you into its murky groove. as the track progresses more eerie pads and effects are layered over the stepping bassline giving it a very creepy feel. finally, french vibes comes through with ‘cherie’ on side b. the track draws its energy from the busy, though crisp, percussive elements and a b-line that groans in unison with the beats. a simple chime remains present throughout, keeping it minimal yet interesting.

the * dance session band project* started for the session with the dance duo symbol-ism who represents yoyogi, tokyo known as the base of yygrec. the band is composed by three members. daisuke fujiwara (sax), well versed in detroit techno, got attention when he was playing in his original band “phat”, which sublimated the improvisation style of techno and jazz in 90’s. after that he has played with jeff mills and also with underground resistance. masatsugu hattori (drums) who has been playing across the genre, has appeared on the fighting-style music event boycott rhythm machine versus live. he has also played and gone on a duo tour with mc sibitt from a hiphop crew origami. keigo iwanami (bass) is playing in a club jazz band sleepwalker, a punk band midori, oncenth trio, zycos and more. he keeps playing in various fields of music like jazz, pop, punk, improvisation music etc. in this project, they creates “physical” dance session music inspired by symbol-ism, and reflects their each musical backgrounds of jazz, techno, house, hiphop, punk, improvisation and so on.
