subb-an and adam shelton may be plenty busy with their own endeavours, but they still know how to bring it home to roost on their own one records. this time around they ve both turned to the same vocalist, isis salam, to deliver some insistent instruction atop their lean and mean productions. subb-an s -self control- is a cool and deadly workout that places the emphasis on the bass and places salam s classic speech at the front of the mix. shelton gets into a more jacking frame of mind on -only now-, whipping up a raw chicago flavour to devastating effect.

the late 1960s / early 70s brought about a change in sound for many gospel groups. producers and label heads at abc peacock recognized that the traditional sound of gospel needed to be updated to appeal to the younger market. the groups started to incorporate elements of soul and funk with arrangements influenced by the r&b records of the time. this compilation presents 13 striking examples of this seismic shift in black music by some of the greatest groups in gospel music’s rich heritage.

bqd40.2 is a collection of original material of artists who we signed back then. on the a side, vid’s “camelie” was an early masterpiece for the label. the mesmerising piano that shines over the beat caught everybody out and made this track one of the most loved brouqade anthems. the b1 belongs to label fave, oshana, who actually released her first production, “magdelena”, on the label. the track featured here, “something different”, was part of a digital compilation, and we’re proud to say we’ve been part of oshana’s story since the very beginning. and as we’ve been digging this track for so long, it’s now only right that it gets some a release on wax.

(hopefully he didn t recognize it while he was mastering it) the last schmer vinyl was dj rx-5 a taste for crap ep from the then moscow based very underground dj compass vrubell. nina kraviz thought it was so crappy she put a track from it on fabric 91: nina kraviz, so i asked alexey to make some more crap. he did it his shway and this is the result. ( ps he still has all the patterns for the rx-5 from the original release so remaster, remixes and rereleases are in schmer s future, huzzah!) bpmf the original schmer artist had nothing better to do so he kommt back and gave us this track. we love to torture the engineer so we just had to include some loops: rhizome is the alter-ego of moscow wunderkind nikita zabelin. philly based hero/victim has been victimizing soundsystems up and down the east coast with his mad live performances. the wise caucasian is a pseudonym for some super famous london based producer and label owner, or at least thats what he claimed when i picked up his bar tab.

deep purple’s 19th studio album sees the light of day. it is being released by the german based label earmusic. the band’s last studio effort dates back to 2005’s ‘rapture of the deep’ so this is a long time coming.
this will make album number four to feature steve morse on guitar and the third with keyboardist don airey. as previously reported, concrete information on the album title is, shall we say, up in the air. “there’s a big question mark over the name at the moment. and possibly an exclamation mark as well.” vocalist ian gillan told classic rock magazine.

much interest domestically and abroad has been generated over the years about an indie soul label in san diego, ca called musette records, whose short life span (1965-1968) only produced less than 20 singles, and no full albums. more than 40 years later, musette would achieve the collectible status among record buyers of northern soul, who recognize and appreciate the r&b grooves that pulsated on these now extremely rare singles.

bqd040.1 is a collection of remixes the label released during its early years. back then, the label intended to back up every release with a remix. the rhadoo remix was not just an amazing addition to pherox’s “gabrielle” track, but it was also featured on an ep released with new graphics. buck delivered an amazing interpretation of danilo schneider’s summer track “l’ecole”, that’s still very much a favourite at the label. last but not least, laurine frost’s remix of dana & nvelope’s “flowers”, one of dana’s first released tracks. frost gave the original a rich soundscape an extraordinary vibe. all of these remixes meant something special to the label, and now they’re all here for you to enjoy on one record…

ypy is the work of osaka based koshiro hino. having recently released on labels such as nous, his own label birdfriend, and the legendary em records koshiro now presents the 7 track lp 2020 for where to now? records. the lp leads with the slow building, off kilter title track 2020,where flurries of eastern horns skitter beneath evolving layers of wonked yet beautifully balanced percussive movements, coming off like a technoid homage to the fourth world works of eno & hassel. as is the case with much of hinos music, as the piece develops it takes on heavier and heavier modes of experimentation and excitement turbines whirr and fizz alongside layers and layers of percussion, constantly teetering on the edge of no-wave breakdown whilst never losing sight of the rhythmic backbone, recouping from every moment of collapse with total grace.

mohammed al harbiti, adam stromstedt and flord king s lyssna records is now on its third release, and the label is beginning to pick up jus the right sort of momentum to make a impact on the vast, bottomless pit that is the deep house scene. what you need to be able to do that is plenty of style and a fresh way of constructing 4/4 patterns, something which levi verspeek has clearly nailed on the opening 256. peshka s miracle is also refreshingly off-kilter, meandering its loose drums over a hazy bed of washed-up sonics, while flord king s steff off uses the minimal formula to deliver its mesmerising glow, and adam stromstedts hm 2016 is probably the best example of traditional deep house that we ve heard since the close of that treacherous 2016. quality house escapades.

the avant garde movement largely influenced katsoulis early compositions. after which, he turned to minimalism, applying elements of jazz and rock into that genre. since the 80s, the use of technology became gradually apparent in his compositions, whist not diminishing the importance of the human factor and the creative involvement of the performer.

new years deal - , fresh from guesting on the debut powell lp sport (xl recordings), and having released on labels such as the tapeworm, entracte, and halcyon veil, dale cornish now presents clap - four rhythmic experiments that explore the mesmeric tones of the digital clap using the ever-popular tr909 clap pre-set. sharing similarities in intention with n.m.os as strict as possible approach, pieces subtly evolve and mutate around the clap to generate motion, tension and action. oolovka takes an unashamedly joyous look at the clap, where melodic repetition whirls and whirls until it takes on a form of mesmerising minimalism – perhaps taking its cues from a modern take on steve reichs ‘music for 18 musicians’ as a backdrop for the clap to playfully roll over and mutate into a sound which is both refreshingly light hearted yet steeped in rhythmic experimentation. cxema takes us a into a tenser, more claustrophobic space where a heads down pulse keeps the body locked until the fog is occasionally broken and the tension momentarily cleared via delayed claps and familiar sonar tones. this vibe continues into isolate with cornish upping the anxiety by using the clap as a foreboding menace. coming across like an inspired soundtrack to a military performance piece the concern appears to revolve around strict precision and strict movement and how the clap can be used to enforce and heighten this functional display. before encore winds things down by stripping things back to the bare minimum for movement – a single effected clap gradually layers and layers itself to create pleasingly odd high tension atmospherics solely through a meticulous process of delicate rhythm and repetition.

night train serves both as a marvellous offering for james brown completists, and, on another level, as a brilliant on-record instrumental jukebox, full of booting saxes, guitar sounds that practically force you to get up and dance, and all propelled by a beat that’s spanned the years without ageing one little bit. so there you have it… a great album that proves what james brown and his friends were doing at the start of the ‘60s still sounds amazingly fresh.

after releasing their own debut record in 2014 the hamburg based group sky walking formed by peter kersten, christian naujoks and richard von der schulenburg now celebrates the launch of their self-titled label. by bringing together an international line-up of artists mostly associated with the new and experimental music scenes in cities like hamburg, berlin and new york sky walking not only establishes a link between different locations and their specific (local) scenes – with the golden pudel club in hamburg somehow functioning as a bermuda triangle – but also between different generations of artists from these scenes.
