in the space of two short years shlømo has quickly established himself alongside the likes of marcelus, bambounou, francois x and the antinote records crew as a key figure in paris’ current techno generation. having established his own taapion records label in 2013 and built a roster around a core of local producers including roman poncet, pvnv and antigone, in addition to enlisting stephen brown, conforce and sterac as remixers for the label’s releases so far. for its fifth release, bright sounds - run by fellow parisian kennedy smith - revisits last year’s rechaïm ep (bsrx003), with a trio of remixers offering their own takes on shlømo’s established deep and expansive sound. first up is the aforementioned 50 weapons artist bambounou, who offers a dynamic groove-based version of the title track that bounces along an elastic kick drum with cut-up fragments of the original’s atmospheric pads providing further impetus. label owner kennedy smith takes on theory is the worst by bringing its dub textures to the for while filling the track’s empty spaces with intricate drum patterns. finally, italian techno pioneer donato dozzy turns grounded queen into a classic dozzy slow-burning techno trip, with his trademark layered sound complimenting the track’s subtle rhythmic backbone.

french label d3 elements returns to chicago for its next ep, this time looking to the assured house talents of hakim murphy for three tracks of raw, dense grooves right from the heart of the windy city. opener boxbeat is a curious, freaky jam with bobbing percussive hits, wonky, pixel thin synth lines and free roaming pads that wrap the whole thing in a nice sense of spaced-out serenity. taste o rainbow has a much more firmly planted kick drum that pounds away uninterrupted below a free flowing brew of modulate synth sounds. it s expertly reduced and masterfully reserved and is sure to send dance floors wild as a result. the flipside cut freshness has pinging drums and a big, frazzled bass line as slithering chords rain down the face. musical yet jacking, cosmic yet propulsive, it is a perfectly contemporary chicago house sound that rounds out a fine ep from one of the best in the game.

heard on “melancholia” are interpretations of honzo’s subconscious visions of life. the intense compositions are made up of drones, noises and distorted beats moving in and out of the frame. on opener “orientalism” said elements blend with hi-hat brushes, brassy synth pads, sci-fi noises and distant human voices evoking islam’s “adhan” (call to prayer). the theme contemplates over alienation caused by western accounts of “orientalism”, soaked in “hüzün” (the turkish term for melancholia). on a2 a rework of “moral masochism” is provided by the mysterious shadows outfit, starting with a distorted guitar over a slow and gritty rhythmic backbone which gradually turns into a chaotic high-intensity acid jam on the ep’s most dance floor suitable cut. on the flipside, “lovesickness” presents a broken kick rhythm periodically flipped by toms and accompanied by a disorienting hi-hat rhythm, ghostly strings and sporadic human moans – all resulting in a tribal mood, recalling a ceremony, perhaps a quest for a saviour from the blue temper? b2 presents the “moral masochism” original. again a distorted guitar plays over a slow rhythm, but compared to the remix, the original’s intensity is introverted, contemplating over melancholia’s effect of deriving gratification from self-inflicted moral humiliation. ambient closer “emptiness” explores a cold state with such an encapsulating airiness that it feels like a close account of another person’s mood down to the impression of their breath. arpeggiated synth noises appear from a distance representing increasing pressure from the outside world without ever suppressing the state of mind. as a result, “emptiness” sums up the state of melancholia experienced as a mood rather than the effect of a cause.

spanish dj & producer, eduardo de la calle, has continued to explore the outer limits of the electronic palette since his cadenza records debut back in 2013, clocking up stellar releases for the likes of mule musiq, hivern discs, be as one and nonplus over the last couple of years. eduardo returns to cadenza in february with the ‘anima animus’ single, coupling two tracks of refined techno for your listening pleasure. taking inspiration from the psychologist/philosopher carl jung’s concept of anima and animus (and do take the time to explore this), eduardo marries arpeggiated synths and melodic chords with a soft kick and tantalizing hats, producing a slick piece of reflective techno that’s alive with melody and groove. on ‘north pole’, we get more of the signature ‘de la calle’ sound, subaquatic bass and searing, melancholic strings play out over a steady mechanical beat, nodding its head not only to the detroit masters but also to the european new wave sounds that influenced the motor city artists in the first instance. another assured single release from eduardo that will further solidify his place in the current electronic music landscape.

moon harbour kick off 2016 with a very special collaborative ep featuring two essential tracks. they have been produced by label boss matthias tanzmann and fellow leipzig-based artist daniel stefanik, and it is the first time in almost a decade the esteemed pair have worked together.

almost exactly three years after nr&, a project uniting &me’s and rampa’s production with the voice of new york disco-house-siren nomi, dropped their debut ep, we finally can announce a new chapter in this ongoing transatlantic menage. this very “spoken for” ep is comprised of two new tracks, that again fuse songwriting with floor-demands and showcase the same crackling and pulse quickening passion that instantly has become nr&’s trademark. so here’s the evidence – a long distance relationship is not necessarily doomed to get boring after a while. “taste like” on a might be conceived as the club-affair of those two new joints. a tune indulging in self-control, extending the pre- eruptive moment of excitement to track length. there is nomi’s unmistakeable sexed up oration, flanked by an affirmative thunderstorm of claps, then a bass heavy bridge, overflowing into a noise brushed finale. altogether a tasty flavour carrier for an effective floor heating. “spoken for” is not only the title track, but also the hymn coming out of the flipside ambush. there is no kick necessary to underpin what nomi’s charismatic croon is laying down. therefore a wise choice to let the arrangement of interspersed field recordings, percussive details and piano- and synth-decoration exercise in unobtrusiveness. safe to say, this tune will refine many future peaktimes anyway.

banoffee pies records return to their original white label imprint for another limited ep with bp003. tip. again the bristol label continue to compile artists and styles from all over following there no f***s given approach. the one sided a1 heavily samples a drum solo from the blockbuster film of 2015 whiplash, a strung out track filled with space and delicate percussion. jaffa surfas b1 provides a mid way techno break pumped with analog sounds and a swirling kick throughout. to end, the finely unearthed and re-issued b2 edit closes this diverse release with a bang offering something completely different. rolling jazz feelings for the dance floor. more love for the banoffee people.

a family move to germany in the 90s expanded his horizons and musical repertoire but his homebase sound remained the same tech house and techno with groovy rhythms and bang out beats. as an artist, he has released on drumcode, cocoon recordings, soma, intec, bek audio, traumschallplatten, trapez, herzblut and bedrock. his tracks are always a mixture between dancefloor moovers including groovy rhythms and big basslines. mark reeve presents his second release on drumcode, run back, a four track ep crammed with heavy hitting kick drums and his signature big basslines. the dark sounds and heavy textures are typical of reeve and hes showing no sign of slowing down yet. four tracks of brooding techno, this ep is one not to be missed.

a year after his last outing on the label, gunnar haslam is back on delsin with four more tracks of idiosyncratic techno. opening up this ep with the title track, haslam cooks up a spangled brew of erratic synths and spinning hi hats and ties them together with a heavy rubber kick drum. followed by sarsi which is then completely different, its a beatless and emotionally forlorn cut that still manages to take you somewhere special. deep dancefloor business taking over on the b-side. scurrying alien sounds closed by a frenzied techno trip. each track here is different from the last, and each track here is a refreshing proposition from one of the most interesting guys around.

taking a purely scorched-earth approach to production, longhorn finds daze on typically reverent but ever-more pounding form. pushing the limits of acceptable lo-fi techno and crushing everything underfoot into one bass-addled debris-strewn mush. title track longhorn bends and contorts metal, steadily melting surfaces at 2000°c heat, cooking and roasting against a background of charred industrial drones. tool is the roller, stuck somewhere between the warehouses of detroit and berlin and harnessing probably the most rubber kick drum known to man. dusting off the cerebral pounding is oil rig . a muffled, dissonant chime reflecting on our pillaging of the earth, our unrelenting ambition for natural destruction, forming a breakneck dystopian chant for the new world.

italys enrico sedda has been releasing material since 2011 both under his own name and as 000 via the likes of sleep is commercial and amam. here we see enrico return with his pure analogue sound under his own name, launching amams new vinyl offshoot imprint mama recordings, a new venture for the italian imprint but retaining the understated warmth and class of its parent label.

detroit techno veteran terrence dixon marks another chapter of his long standing career signing for italian imprint out electronic recordings as population one. after releasing three eps on modularz, 30drop and his own outlet reduction in 2015 under the aformentioned moniker, terrence dixon is going to kick off the new year with two techno, retro-feeling original tracks capturing his typical production take.

lpz inaugurate their own imprint with this eclectic various artists ep. channelling the finest strands of techno, electro and house. chugging bass lines sit atop of pounding kick drums and squelching acid fx.

ruff daft returns, and after a various artist ep for number 7, number 8 on the label goes back to the founder, with three new tracks from cottam washed out kicks things off, at the cross roads between mood hut & basic channel where dub techno sensibilities meet dreamy chords for a delectable deep house track. horns harks back to cottam s earliest releases, with an afro-ish horn loop teased out over four minutes until the full loop and bass kick in to devastating effect. a ruff draft sees cottam look back towards his techno roots, with a killer kick drum and raw acid lending an abrasive edge to a well rounded ep of varied styles.

2016 is all set to kick off in fine style for the opilec music label as they release three brilliant remixes of an i-robots original. artwork comes from tamami saito to ensure this is another irresistible package. the original track here is opilec music boss i-robots come to harm which was released on his debut album laws of robotics back in 2007.

label head enzo siragusa returns to fuse for his first full ep since 2012 with the sanctuary ep kicking off with double dove, a hyper-kinetic slab of phunked up tech weaponry. the cavernous bass makes for a real warehouse vibe whilst silken pads lap upon the senses for an audio overload. the flipside s solo takes things into deeper realms, a tripped out vocal effect being the track focal point, custom made for early hours sessions whilst the eps vinyl only track gemini does away with any headier pretences and delves straight into the heart of things with a thumping kick and sense of purpose.

tresor.283 unveils yet another exceptional debut ep, this time from the hand of zadig. the head of construct re-form had already been initiated to the tresor catalog with the inclusion of panic on the demo tracks #2 compilation, in 2013.
with the stellar hunter he delivers three tracks rich in tradition, matching impeccably to his style, arrangemental magic and masterful set of technique.
between elongated synth pads, high-frequency blips and reversed kick drum sequences coupler with deep hypnotic bass lines, zadig proves to be the talented recipient of an illustrious heritage in techno, carrying it forward with modern application.

2016 repress, this is the ep long waited by all disco lovers. on the main side *makin love* with the lovely long intro with congas and spacey fx that warms you up for the explosion of the hot sexy vocal line. on the b side a fantastic re-work of a rare disco/folk track modernized with loops, fx and lasers that give you the right kick on the dance floor.

resopal retrieves two more smoldering remix cuts on transparent vinyl. safe to say that both of them - the a side by heidelberg s casio casino (aka steffen neuert of bergheim 34 ) together with lopazz - and the stunning b-side by our marseille connection roar - are absolute stompers. what we have here are two finely crafted remix versions of the original that seduce the dance floor in totally different ways. both contain perfectly structured arrangements that creep up on you with the stealth of a ninja, making them a real pleasure to mix with. the heidelberg guys show a minimal disco hybrid version of the original. from the moment the bassline emerges from a dense thicket of white noise the pair make their intentions clear. with expertly-crafted sequences punctuated by dramatic crescendos and distinctive mood changes their re-work is a melting pot of styles and influences that somehow manage to coexist, creating a rich montage of sounds and textures. on the b - french duo roar deliver hallucinogenic, long, patient grooves followed by some fantastically understated sonic tweaking which gives the track a real kick without ever losing that empty, laid back vibe.

cadenza music opens up its 2016 account with the debut single from swiss producers, rare movement feat. disco channel. cutting their teeth on the dj circuit for many years, and playing alongside such esteemed jocks as seth troxler, ricardo villalobos (who mastered the audio on these tracks), jamie jones and luciano (who ultimately signed this single to cadenza), the guys have crafted a pair of tracks that sit right in the dj sets of the aforementioned company. rare 007 combines tension building synths and a wandering bassline, wrapped up tight in solid drum groove, its hypnotizing tones carving out a most useful club tool. on the flip side, rare 011 digs deeper, with cinematic string sweeps over the sparse and bass heavy kick drum. flashes of vocal refrains and micro percussion fly in and out of the arrangement as the melodic elements give this one a real sense of drama as the track blossoms into life. a very accomplished debut from the guys will no doubt provide a real dancefloor moment in the right setting, and no surprise that villalobos gave these tracks the audio master that they deserve.

on waehlscheibe we stand: the swiss label drops yet another dub house bomb with marco nega s cosy cutz ep : muse on the a-side is a 15 minutes long dub epos full of creamy chords, soft pads and smooth athmospheres. holotrope on the b-side speeds up the pace and pleases with a solid kick and a super deep bass without losing sight of the dubby chords. finally, in your arms fnishes of the wonderful ep with an ultra low bass for all you dub heads and some more of marco s trademark chords and delay -game he plays so well. all in all, cosy cutz ep makes for a terrifc listening experience which is further aided by the expert mastering: as always all tracks on the new waehlscheibe record have been mastered by above smoke at the hole of dub studio.

lillo carillo is a young italian dj and producer with several years of background behind. born and raised near the city of naples, he settled in milan from several years where he immediately fit in the circuit of the main local clubs, getting noticed for energy and creativity behind the dj booth. simultaneously lillo offers his musical skills by working with several italian fashion brands for which he is a sound designe. in 2014 he released his first remix for an ep vinyl with editors kutz vol.4, collaborating with manufacturers which are already known in the world of the nu-disco, as sleazy mcqueen and 78edits, therefor experiencing a strong success that makes him known even outside italian territory. after a winter spent in the recording studio, he is finally ready for his new ep on the newly released palm hands recording, where you can see all the talent and eclecticism of a young italian producer, a master in juggling house sounds, rnb, disco and funk.

dj ralf is the italian icon who runs the much loved laterra recordings label and management, and is now back with ‘er suonone’, a new track from margot that is all set to be a late summer smash. anyone who has heard the legendary dj ralf (a cult figure who has been the subject of a documentary, has played all over the world, runs his own legendary bella ciao party and holds a cult residency in cocorico) play recently will most likely have heard this track in his set, and it has been an unknown but much loved secret weapon for a while now. as such this one sided vinyl pressing will please many people who have been hunting it down. margot, of course, is an italian pair of accomplished producers who have released on, les disques de la mort, hell yeah and border community and run their own margot records label. ‘er suonone’ is a pumping, deep, slow burning bit of cosmic house that builds and builds and teasers listens without ever releasing the pressure. monstrous kick drums drive it down below, pixelated stabs add suspense in the distance and icy hi hats slither in the foreground. it’s the sort of track to drop right at the peak time and it will surely go right off, with people fist pumping along to the groove.

this is the first solo work by kwartz released by the warm up imprint. the young spanish talent displays all his production skills in this release that opens with the compact kick drums and arpeggiated madness of *rite*, spiced with sweeps and drones that interweave with the hypnotic arrangement. in his first rework, oscar mulero reduces the bass drum punch, twists the arpeggiated synth line with reverb and early reflections, and adds an overall guerrilla feel to the sound.

our third to last release combines two driving forces of contemporary techno: homegrown benjamin damage is joined by truncate, a deadly combination for any dj s bag. ben damage s -battle- sees him layer his hyperactive grooves over a thumping kick with a small but effective acid line topping things off. truncate s -86- is a massive track dave sumner aka function previously used in his -berghain 07- mix, obviously serving as one of the highlights in there. it s creeping synths build up to a climax in typical truncate fashion, with huge, compressed kickdrums pounding the dance floor mercilessly

label founder mire composes the debut release on nuthe recordings. hailing from east london he sets the tone for the label with his own vision of techno and experimental music. the first track on the ep is distorted silhouettes a dark pulsating, bass heavy techno cut. sitting on the flipside is entropy this is more melodic, with a twisted analogue synth lead throughout and a pumping 4x4 kick. the final track is a haunting droney soundscape which which cuts like a razor at points and tails off as an outro into whats coming next on the imprint.

shift work are an electronic duo who have previously released on jd twitch’s glasgow label optimo. they debut on houndstooth with ‘document ii’, an ep developed from live jams on outboard analogue gear. ‘abandoned hands’ is lean and raw, an angular bassline and indecipherable vox punctuating the relentless 4/4 kick drum and pattering percussion. ‘sbfm’ is fuller-bodied, with the modulating bassline taking centre stage, draped in loose synths and topped with a deadpan vocal refrain. shift work invited remixes from their associates, with dva damas dialling down the tempo and stripping back ‘abandoned hands’ further still, whilst factory floor return to remix duty on houndstooth with a typically subtle yet infectious building groove. cut and mastered by matt colton at alchemy and limited to 500 copies worldwide.

moving into the latter stage of 2015, drumcode are keeping up the refined techno that they have displayed and are making sure that they continue to keep up this form throughout heading into 2016. steve rachmad is a name familiar to everyone within the electronic music scene. he has been a big part of the scene for over two decades and boasts a whole host of records and shows.
he has been remixed by the likes of ricardo villalobos, joris voorn and more. rachmad is now hosting his own studio 80 based club night kis where he plays mesmerising extended sets. steve rachmad is welcomed to the vinyl-only offshoot drumcode limited. disturbance is a punchy little number that has a stuttering synth that rises over the top of the pounding kick drum. steps takes it up a notch with a simplistic bleep pattern that modulates throughout that is awash with a throbbing undercurrent.

vinyl only release, born and raised in constanta, home of the legendary la mania club, sepp was influenced by electronic music’s finest sound from an early age. step by step he rose from the ranks not only to become his city’s most beloved dj but also a la mania resident. production followed quickly and quickly came a few releases for uvar, body parts or andromeda. now it’s time for a new challenge and it appears sepp is here to serve. catren is the name, sepp is the game ! sepp’s work is usually a bit minimalistic and super organic and this ep is no different. crampei de balad starts a little broken an creepy only to develop into a super casual dance track. with the kick in comes the synth that will only be eclipsed by the occasional vocals. dance !
glass din stele is the serious one. the steely organic feel present in so many of his works is on. dark strings, piano, ample reverbed spaces and a super groove come together into a ultra deep track that echoes the artist’s fundamental influences. petre inspirescu and ricardo villalobos, probably, if we have to guess.
