los angeles producer sweatson klank builds his productions as if they were films, developing a story from start to finish. stylistically, fine lines his debut full length for friends of friends, picks up where his 2017 then i was me’ ep left off, melding forward thinking hip hop and electronics as a back drop for a soulful and sultry journey through a tumultuous love affair, loss of self, and the dark empty spaces in our minds. the songs on fine lines sit in a space occupied by hip hop, future r&b and house, yet the record cleverly transcends any single genre. while much of the production is hard hitting, the album manages to walk a tightrope between heartache and swagger. a meticulous fine line that weaves itself like a thread throughout. sweatson klank enlists a number of features on the album including newcomers ana calvo, sarah saldivia, and annie bass as well as past collaborator, montreal producer ango.

ditongo is telling tales through samples and loops in these two tracks. divided into two chapters each (spot the ghost-marker on the vinyl), he digs deep into samba for the first time with “berimbau”, giving the leading role to a hypnotic organ, while the second track “you know nothing” goes back to funk, dominated by a fat bassline.

roxymore returns with the latest instalment in her thoughts of an introvert series. the first part, which hit stores in 2017, was born out of introspection and a yearning for solitude. tracks like prodrome, which refers to symptoms indicating the early onset of an illness, seemed to reflect a global weariness, a head-nodding, late night search for comfort and respite. on part 2 though, a new energy is evident in the tracks. this is not what you think shrugs and fizzes with resilience, it feels like a maniacal, primal release from frustration and anguish. run feet finds an even more optimistic, upbeat bounce, not far from the stomping house euphoria of her first outing for dba, organ smith, but with the newfound confidence of an artist who is pushing both technology and style to the outer limits. mythical technology meanwhile, is a dancefloor-ready paean to technos own futurist manifesto.

2018 reissue

back in 1962 when this, their third album was released, the group consisted of smokey, ronnie white, pete moore and brother and sister bobby and claudette rogers. while he had yet to be featured in the billing by name that came in 1965 robinson’s photo was top and centre of the lp cover. the ten songs featured barely amounted to 27 minutes of music, but what i ll try something new may have lacked in quantity it more than made up for in quality. and the reason was clear. six of the ten songs stem from robinson s pen five solo efforts and the sixth, closing track this i swear, i promise , a co-write with janie bradford. let s savour an album that, as one perceptive critic put it, features the miracles at their early best... as young, eager kids just starting out, filled with optimism, youthful exuberance and enthusiasm, long before record-company politics, favouritism and restrictions changed the group forever.

the water surely is greener on the other side. susans 5th release marks perhaps the biggest step towards the so-called life of susan. speed and depth transform into ritualistic whistles, strange questions may be asked, but the summery seasons will blossom whilst binge eating kebabs with that wild seasoning. susan wont create her own energy drink, but the likes of dj swagger, axefield, dj windows xp and joakim hellgren sure have spiced up the spectrum of reason on this one.

zwei jahre nach dem reissue von david bowies »changesonebowie« wird 2018 endlich auch »changestwobowie« wieder aufgelegt. »changestwobowie« erschien ursprünglich im november 1981. es handelt sich dabei um ein compilation-album, eine sammlung mit insgesamt zehn songs von bowies karriereanfängen, die es nicht auf den vorgänger geschaffte hatten, darunter klassiker wie »aladdin sane«, »starman«, »1984« und »sound and vision«. »changestwobowie« wurde in den 1980er-jahren nur für eine kurze zeit veröffentlicht. der sampler war bislang auch nie teil einer wiederveröffentlichungsreihe.

san francisco in the late 1960. the hotbed of psychedelic and rock culture. the dead, joplin, jefferson airplane and a host of others all gaining mainstream acceptance for their acid tinged work. but the city and the surrounding bay area had so much more going for them. a liberal political outlook and a large african american and latino population, meant that musical and cultural reference points were wider and more easily assimilated there than (almost) anywhere else in the united states. two of the biggest groups to emerge from this scene were santana and sly and the family stone, with their melting pots of sound that took in jazz, soul, rock and latin influence. for a while they were two of the biggest acts in the united states and scores of local bands tried to follow in their footsteps. they were hard acts to follow and very few got to the stage of making a 45, never mind a whole lp. one of the best to do just that were leon’s creation, whose debut lp “this is the beginning” acid jazz are reissuing here. a native of san francisco leon patillo led the group, whose multi racial line-up echoed that of his heroes on the local scene. self contained and gigging locally they made their debut album at the tiny studio 10 who also custom pressed the album in extremely limited numbers the music is a perfect blend of acid soul, mixed with hippie sentiments that will get you dancing on the uptempo numbers such as the title track, ‘back roads’ – with its glorious harmonies and the soaring ‘power’. more thoughtful numbers such as ‘until you were gone’ or ‘love’ will touch your soul. so impressed was carlos santana that he eventually asked leon to join his band.

sunlight by herbie hancockis a 1978 jazz-funk, fusion album. it features hancock’s vocals through a vocoder as well as performances by drummer tony williams and bassist jaco pastorius. this was when hancock began heading towards a more mainstream smooth jazz/r&b fusion, similar to fellow jazz-fusion pianist patrice rushen. the album produced a hit-single entitled “i thought it was you”. as a whole the album tends to lay more toward funk than a jazz record, and is reminiscent of much of the electro-funk of the time. this release marks the beginning of the 80s electro-era style that was more refined in herbie’s later albums such as “future shock” and “sound-system”. pressing on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

over the past few years orchestral instrumental music from outside the classical establishment has become huge, and neil leiter and margaret hermant of the belgian echo collective have witnessed the evolution and extraordinary rise of this movement right up close. they ve worked with some of the most important players, including stars of the lid, dustin o’halloran and adam wiltze’s a winged victory for the sullen and o’halloran’s solo projects, as well as jóhann jóhannsson. and though the echo collective members themselves very much do come from within the classical music establishment, they don t care which side of the fence they are seen to be on.
