after a much-loved freerange ep, berlins andre crom & milans luca doobie return to their home label. >sometimes< might be the duos biggest dancefloor-burner since their breakthrough-track >ebony<. a tight groove, killer bassline, techy chord stabs and infectious vocals are the recipe for a pure peaktime anthem that will rock both house and techno sets.
>whats happening< is a deeper, more quirky atmospheric bass-heavy groovetool, with freaky vocals and a pretty unique vibe.
federico molinari gives sometimes a deep remix in typical oslo style, working with the chord stabs on a monotone hypnotic groove and subtle fx & modulations.

clone classic cuts continues to dig in the crates to bring back forgotten or obscure records from the past! this is 3 tracks by da posse (produced by hula... one of the outthere brothers... and with maurice joshua, k fingers & martell). strings & its my life are chicagos take on detroit techno... a rare release that sounds like a early derrick may record (think the dance) but maybe slightly more straight forward (as one might expect from chicago). a rare piece in house and techno history since this is one of the rare examples of a record that doesnt show the clear difference between chicago and detroit in the late 80s. this record most likely got produced within 1 year after rhythm = rhythms legendary nude photo and strings of life releases (both 87 and this came out in 88). as extra bonus track we have the groove. a phat bass driven chicago acid track that still rocks it. another fine piece of powerful dance music history back in the spot light!

outstanding modern house tracks with acoustic elements. this is some hot tracks for all the modern club jocks! very well crafted tracks with acoustic elements on rotterdam s sound architecture. coming from a city known for its modern architecture might explain the futuristic and well functioning dance tracks with a classy feeling! minimalish but not cold but exceptional warm and full of athmosphere tracks that realy stand out! comes with a remix by label owner joachim. very exciting record! fro frieds from cadenza and perlon

peter van hoesen returns with his time 2 express label after being on tour during the summer season. and in the meantime he got a great selection together with remixes and new tracks by the t2x artists. peter himself is getting a dirty make-over job executed by norman nodge and pendle coven. with exciting results as one might expect from these guys! sendai and samuli kemppi delivering some powerful abstract basement techno tracks. t2x with another essential techno release!

wurst are going from strength to strength with another killer 12inch, this time from ulysses. latin combo features pretty much no latin elements on first listen although we think we can hear a few claps and percussion samples from a charanga 76 cover of chic that might be influencing the title. both tracks feature dubbed out drums and a warm analog feel throughout making for a pleasant listen and two solid club tracks at the same time.

voyeurrhythm crew returns with an splendin follow up on the ep1 (which was sold out on the day it came out!). and this one might even be better! hollywood nights has a dirty chi-town influenced house track with a phat bassline... think early days of frankie knuckles! megadon betamax did a cheeky cover version of one of our all-time favorite electronic disco tracks... changed into >he cant love you< (he completly reprogrammed and recorded the track!). and ben sun, suplier of the fantastic >when you looked< track on ep1 has another extremely solid track again called victoria park.. goose bumps all over from the first bar! another winner.

sex tags mania with more leftfield dance music... the label just does what they feel and that goes from crazy nordic afro funk (see recent sex tags amfibia release) to intens house tracks, uptempo techno or just raw low-key tracks like this one. they have at least one major fan called omar s who loves the label!

baaz comes back home at sthlmaudio recordings for a rich and surprise full new ep called woodland drive. the 12 inches start right off with sink, a very baaz styled house track which is dance appealing and yet refined and subtle. a raw bassy groove monster track. the next one might surprise the baaz fans out there, yes it’s a hip-hop track featuring the soul vocals of katrina marie. we figured out that it might be fresh to provide some other point of view in the repeating herself dance scene. the b side strikes hard on the house side again, it s gone is one of those pure shining and rolling tracks. once to you uplift it you’d just let it go. a bass heavy subtle and groovy house cut, baaz trademark?! essential. and again the b2 and closing track is an lush and low key hip-hop science out of baaz most retired places

sahin meyers offering comprises 2 very techno-dub influenced deep-house tracks. remixes of >world cup of the future< come from berlin-native eva be, who might be known for her previous work on best seven/ sonar kollektiv and jacek sienkewicz of techno-fame. and now: kickoff

the particular view on a musical future might have been considerably different when olaf hilgenfeld (berlin) met iftah gabbai (jerusalem) for first sessions in 2004. the piano player hilgenfeld used the accordion that time mainly, whilst gabbai was using all instruments available, a computer was among those more by chance. only one year later the duo skinnerbox played regularly on such uplifting, innovative off-partys that came up in the new techno generation again.
that was just the beginning. skinnerbox have developed a purely electronically composed and performed music (partly featuring vocals by elle_p) – that is not based on loops but improvised techno inspired house and minimal house. the roles in the duo are clearly settled: olaf hilgenfeld – moog synthesizer, iftah gabbai – hardware drum machines, max/msp und ableton live.
all these distinct impacts and effects can be heard on their various releases from the last two years, but far better in their live sets. skinnerbox are an experience, taking you on expedition with paralyzing minimal, breaking house, hard-edged techno-jazz, and ambient electronica futurism.
it was a desire to eternalize this play- & colorful diversity, often just caused by the moment, as entire homogeneity. thus, they needed to leave temporarily their environmental techno and minimal house scapes. >king of spades and marmalades< – the result – is a jazz opus wrapped into a disco suitcase. it is a reminiscence as well as going far ahead of daily musical habits, shown not at least by the order of tracks, do not starting with a stunning hit of the album, but with 20 minutes of challenge.

plastique de rêves new single on david carrettas label space factory disques follows up on last years fantastic release on dfa with its summer !!, a perfect techno-pop summer hit with another great feature by vocalist ghostape, and dives further into the realms of electrodisco, synth-pop, and cosmic music. ultra synthetic and light-hearted, yet dreamy and emotional, the three tracks (four on the digital release) each capture with authenticity the essence of electronic disco music but pay tribute to it here in a very original, playful and modern way. its summer !! is a great follow-up to plastique de rêves previous singles on dfa and supersoul recordings, also featuring ghostape on vocals. this time the music goes even deeper into the worlds of synth-pop and electronic disco, with reminiscences of vince clarkes yazoo, giorgio moroder or kelley polar. the sunny, laidback, pop radio atmosphere, together with ghostapes emotional build up of the deliberately simplest lyrics ever written so far, might well keep you smiling, and dancing, all summer.

2nd single from the patrick cowley & jorge socarras album >catholic<. bleeding edge remixing by oni ayhun and noble editing by morgan geist added for your pleasure. while still everybody keeps guessing whos behind the mysterious and burning hot works of oni ayhun, macros got the mans first ever remix! o.a. obscured cowleys >memory fails me< with his trademark darkness and took it to the edge of engineering. and its got all that feeling, too! if you asked yourself what a forward-thinking patrick cowley might have done today - here is a serious offering. >burn brighter flame< is the disco heart of the album. with all disco crate digging of the decade, >bbf< is the ultimate find. since the original artists had intended this one to be a single theres also a stunning instrumental! we just remember how everybody got tears of joy when finn johannsen mixed the different versions of this for the first time at berlins picknick. who could have been asked for an edit of this gem other than metro areas morgan geist? creating a dialogue between the vocal and instrumental versions, his edit offers even more variety for the dj to mix in and out of this great tune.

mothership transmission 027 – maetrik the >space chronic< ep was the biggest selling record on mothership last year and for good reason. maetrik has an incredible knack for innovative and original sound design. he is also able to package these sounds inside great arrangements and very dj friendly beats. this is what really separates his records from the rest of the sound design experts. >show me< is the perfect example of maetriks amazing talents. after several minutes of a super funky techno groove (2 things that dont usually go together) we find ourselves at the drop. and this drop is one of the best we have ever heard. it sounds like an angry wasp is flying full speed through the inside of your brain. the riff will melt your mind. >simpleman< on the other side is a great example of maetriks versatility. you might be expecting a hardcore techno bit but instead we hear a very groovy, almost reserved jazz techno fusion joint, but still with the heavy beats to keep it real for the clubs.

nice price deal !!! bizarre beardy pych rock and funk edits from the mysterious black editons. i don t know much else about the release but if you re a disco jock of the beared persuasion then these might be pretty handy

alex celler has made quite a splash in 2009! since his tuningspork debut ep trapped in dub, hes had a hitrecord la palma for arearemote, and consequently teamed up with fellow londoner anthea of phonica records. as anthea & celler they released a pair of 12?s forfreak n chic and cÚcille, and now their third effort as a duo appears on tuningspork. down with g.o.d. is a chunky and forceful workout, fuelled by jesus juice, with a distorted bass bounce and vaporous dubovertones that just might make the dancefloorbreak down and speak in tongues.

our favorite frankfurters miguel and arno are back with more frolicking, funky and fired up house. the boys have kept busy since their last release on kindisch, out with a bang, (which for a period was heard every weekend in clubs across europe) remixing for labels such as arearemote, below and murmur. oh, and we almost forgot to mention nurturing their label la peña, whose success can be contributed to their no nonsense attitude to releasing only merit worthy house. welcome back kindischs native sons, as they take you an inebriated four-track voyage of the utmost magnitude of rump-jiggling beats. >caña moral< contains all the things that we have grown to love einzelkind for: warm and crunchy beats and a perfected groove all following the chants of tribal vocals. this one might be a tad more pristine than what they have been known to release on their own label, but it does give proof of their ability to construct tightly woven modern beats

supported by: richi hawtin, hot chip, john digweed, nik fanciull, tono rios, okain... their new ep >shipyard< is piemont at their best... we would not have it another way... magnetic beat-bassline monsters, funky and rigid at the same time. you might call it germanic and it reminds us of dadaism in the 20ies ingermany with it s theme: non-sense makes more sense? the a-side track >shipyard< has all of this, a fusion of old school with blowing horns and massive hi-tech technology. well we know the release is about hamburg harbour...but what the f..ck does it matter. the b1-track >cargo< is as heavy and bulky as you can imagine a track to be with this name... but if you know piemont, you know they make even heavy tracks funky. the b2-track >dockyard< isthe deepest track on the 12 inch and shows that piemont will continue their liking for deeper music which they revealed for the fist time on their recent album >strange world beyond< on mbf.

beep beep beep. remix remix remix!
on the a-side, the loco dice dub is a perfect set-builder, one of his best remixes to date. purist loco fans might also be happy to hear that tigas vocal has been 99% extracted from this version, leaving behind only the echo of disco-pop in a solid, dj-friendly groove.
kaines mix keeps things closer to the original, emphasizing the pop punch-lines with staccato beeps and a chunky beat. positive vibes here from a bright young uk producer.
finally, space-disco maestros emperor machine turn in another epic roller complete with a brilliant analog synth jam finale.

australias canyons (who you might recognize from their excellent releases on modular, hole in the sky, etc.) are featured for their debut release on the esteemed nyc label. fire eyes takes the a side with its deep disco house rhythms topped off with growling diva vocals, acid synths and all kinds off jungle sounds and percussion. they re definitely taking it there and it sounds huge. dancing on silk is on the flip with more female vocals, this time a lot more playful and sexy, over a warping disco beat complete with dubbed out horn solos and arpeggios. also includes the jaques renault living in the jungle mix of fire eyes that strips down the original while adding tight key stabs and dubby vox for more of a straight forward house groove

the om 15 year anniversary compilation is chok full of tasty treats. one of our favorites is this >the latest< by sygaire & defcon featuring capitol a. sygaire (sonar kollektiv, raw fusion) is the the moniker of roskow kretschmann, who has quite the resume of contributions to modern dance music culture. starting with his role as member of jazzanova crew, to his later offerings as kosma, forum, and integra (compost, infracom!), roskow is obviously a man on a mission to spread incredible music throughout the world. here he is with partner defcon (raw fusion, melting pot), the alias of one philipp wohlleben. as innocent as that name might sound, do not be fooled. defcon stands for defense condition 5, and dj defcon brings the heat like a missile in the night. together these two have come with what clearly translates as a respectful bow to the old skool days, presented in true double 12 inch extended mix fashion, and complete with vocals from none other than capitol a.

dachshund & modeste present here their respective views onto dub influenced club entertainment. dachshund strike first with an absolutely stunning cut. deep and highly effective drums, warm pads and superb dub horns along with the ever tight dog productions skills. the track might sound simple at first but yet again, what does sound simple is something you can listen for hours, this is one of thosetracks! modeste launches the big round wooded ball on the flip side. a lethal raw beat, inviting to dirtiness vocals and a snare that hit and hit and hits again… pumpin dub chords lands in and check the effect, club surprising for sure…we hope you like it, thanks for your time

westpark unit (aka herb lf & ingo saenger) are back with their annual release on farside records after some work for labels like dessous, tjumy, future classic or fear of flying. this time, they provide 4 brandnew trax for the vinyl edition. more forever might be familiar to a few people that followed the music of westpark unit over the years. the tune is a special rework of their first ever limited 12inch release forever back in 2002 on draft recordings. more forever took some of the original deep harmonies, keeps parts of the piano loop and the beautiful sampled hook and should be a soulful bomb on the 2009 floors. even deeper 45 grows and grows with a very intensely chord, takes you on a trip with its driving bassline and is the other dubby deep house tune here. the first demo version received some nice feedback / chartings / plays from djs like dplay, matt flores or shur i kan. while speaking of house (not house), jam hot and familiar sequence are musically caught somewhere in between the styles. jam hot might be more funk than house with sexy 104 bpm, is bouncing like hell and keeps the crowd shaking and moving. familiar sequence appeals to the disco fanatics out there, has a little of a balearic vibe and is also keeping things slow. both tunes are the perfect startup into the night. we think this is the right tempo for party anyway.

just in case someone might have forgotten: stil vor talent is based in berlin. and this ep by sascha braemer, one part of heinrich & hirtenfellner, proves just that. braemer, whos just been at the top of everybodys dj charts with his funk-laden minimal soul piece >mamba drums< on kindisch records, has donated three tracks to oliver koletzkis imprint that mirror what this city is best know for: funky minimal grooves. first up there is >ghost track< a typical dry minimal loop with a rhythmically in touch vocal sample that is then juxtaposed by a simply astonishing piece of melody. goose bumps and groove humps on the floor - guaranteed! on the flip: >girl<. here braemer has created a dubby piece of tech house that floats towards a soulful vocal and some beautiful strings. this is one for the early morning, or in berlin, the late afternoon, those times when everything seems in perfect harmony with each other. last up is >guitar man<, yet another very sample-based stripped down loop with one riff of an echoed guitar being the protagonist. when that riff is fully played out, we all know its summer. but it wouldnt be berlin if there werent some dark wobbly basslines seemingly destroying this but in fact creating the perfect combination of soft and hard, of light and dark. on top of this the vocal sample >i wont leave< perfectly encapsulates the vibe of the praised berlin afterhour. stil vor talent is back at home with this ep.

one of the great aspects of the endlessly varying bass music soundwave is the way it seems able, even compelled, to fuse antecedant styles and genres to itself. in the most innovative hands, influences from last month are absorbed and reworked as smoothly as those from last century, and creativity sparks brightest when the marriage of form and function takes place beyond recognised boundaries? and it?s from that unrestricted zone that uk producer o-dessa emerges. opening with an initial resemblance in sound to the same plaintive blue air of burial, as these tracks resonate deeper in the mind, it becomes clear that this sonic affinity is merely a veil beneath which a new heart beats. the rhythms lurking below the bassline in ?deeper? are like some undiscovered amalgam of old skool hardcore and something you might hear on the latest dirty south mixtape, which somehow manage to defy sense and co-exist in a driving and breathtaking way. mournful mariachi horns and a plunging dub bassline intermingle in a desolate approximation of sergio leone?s western soundtracks, while reedy flutes and distant female voices build a swirling vapour through which skittering woodblocks and metallic ticks raise an anxious sense of motion. anchored by a vast, cone-melting sub-bass undertow, ?deeper? s treasures are buried well below the surface. the juxtapositional subtle-tear-out nature of o-dessa?s production is even more apparent in ?million dollarz?, which reveals itself in stages to be a gradual descent into layers of tweaked amen breaks, but with a grandeur unlike anything previously heard, even though that drum pattern has already been chopped countless ways over the years. it?s not until midway through its five-and-a-half minutes that the famous phased snares rise from the dense banks of atmospherics, but when they do, a moment of blurred euphoria hits and the tune bursts into colourful life. this 12¬ is the first broadcast of many more to come from o-dessa, as - like many have in their own way before and still more strive to do so now - he embarks on his individual journey in the continual reinvention of bass music. instant thrill junkies won?t find their fix in these grooves, but followers of the path less travelled will recognise many signs pointing the way to a rich future.
