being one part of the dj team kassette boys, ferri borbás aka superlover is widely known as m_ferri. he was raised in berlin and after the wall came down he got musically influenced enormously by the then arising techno culture of the mid 1990ies. his early productions have always mirrored the influences of the rough, industrial and dark sounding techno sound which was brought to berlin by artist like jeff mills, laurent garnier or joey beltram. simple, radical sounding and functional: tracks like his >tanzgenerator< or >open the watergate< had shaped these asthetics into a trademark sound. his latest superlover project is slightly shifting his musical coordinates : instead of a reduced and purely funtional >m_ferri sound< his new project presents a rather emotional and energetic mix of warm sounding rhodes pianos and string synthesizers. the three tracks of the e.p. combine those sounds earworm-like to catchy melody riffs and being the metamorphosis of a new disco influenced, poppy superlover sound

fifth release on the acclaimed imprint from those lovely people over at the acclaimed sleazybeats blog. the dust just doesnt seem to settle at team sleazy who are set to unleash their fifth dish of mid-tempo filth. sbr005 should likely round out what has undoubtedly been more than a successful year for the sleazy beats crew. as hard as it might seem to upstage their recent sampler, this release by berliner daniel solar (of no more hits and dikso fame) is another trio of totally on point sleazy business which showcases daniels stellar skills. things start off with midfidelity funk, a snappy romp through steady synth and disco string territory. this little number delivers a perfectly spell-binding groove with nicely placed rhodes stabs, crisp tambourines and haunting vocal at the breaks. on the flip, twinkle love snaps out a sweet melange of piano, guitar/bass riff and morphing vocals that combine to give a lively mood and open atmospherics. finally, rounding up the ep is la fleur, a wonky yet punchy cut thats ripe with staunch drum sounds and strings amidst loopy vocal snippets for good measure. all three tracks ride a 110ish bpm groove that is likely to ring bells for those who have been following and digging the sleazy sound so far. the last few releases all sold out in a matter of weeks, so dont sleep on this. you know the drill by now: limited release, no repress.

released on the always reliable hit farm neon gold, which has given the world marina & the diamonds, ellie goulding, your twenties and penguin prison among others, starsmith is a super-hip young producer who has worked with ellie on her album, as well as remixing marina, passion pit, nerd and loads of others. its a scorching electro-tinged pop demon, glam without the cheese, and reminiscent of the kind of smashes that the french house lords of the mid 90s (like fred falke and alan braxe - more on him later...) were ruling dance music with. great sample from an old ritchie family (clip below...) disco stomper from the 80s which powers the whole thing with a undeniable hands-in-the-air vibe. a big autumn hit!

after a lengthy break from the electronic music world, genotype is back with an lp for exit records and provides a lesson in stripped back dub influenced music at approximately 170 bpm. having started his music career in the mid nineties under the legendary alias just jungle, with releases on the massively influential labels of that era such as trouble on vinyl, renegade hardware and reinforced records, its no surprise that he has managed to capture the essence of rawness in his recent music akin to the early years of jungle. many producers have tried and failed to bring back the old skool sound with an original flavor but genotype has managed this by resisting the temptation to lash in the tired old classic breaks and instead has drawn for the more organic sounding percussion and drum kits. the dubbed out theme runs throughout the album paying homage to his love for west indian music which he has been involved in for many years and naturally influences the music he creates. genotype is a man of few words and prefers to let his music do the talking so check out the album and draw your own conclusions.

more sophisticated disco influenced gems from this great fledgling label... the elevator people are back, introducing ep 003 by giulio dj! giulio dj, also called julian horn by his mum, started his tuneful career djing in vienna about 8 years ago, bringing his love for authentic disco, balearic beats and cosmic leftfield sounds to local music circles. julians productions reflect the warmth of 70s n 80s disco with a wide range of influences from chicago to contemporary house music. his first release on elevator people is a dirty mid-tempo floor filler called cocos nuts that will work well on the more sophisticated dance floors and will go just as well with your hamburgers during those summer bbqs portuguese don >social disco club< takes it up a notch and delivers a sweet house remix with a little acid on the side

phonica records limited offshoot returns with a second 12 inch from the man that kickstarted the label iori. the okinawan producer, whose >galaxy / urge< 12 inch won praise from across the board, has been working prolifically and this is only a brief glimpse of things to come. first up is >spatiotemporal< - a ten and a half techno odyssey towards the deeper echelons of the genre. starting off as a simple drum attern, >spatiotemporal< slowly but steadily builds up, with iori bringing layer after layer of synths proper mid-paced cosmic techno!! its definitely one of those tracks that need to be left to do their work preferably on a loud soundsystem! on the flip, weve secured the remix talents of one of the hottest names in techno at the moment. all the way from cold sweden, skudge have made quite a name for themselves in the last year, with solid releases on their own imprint. their remix of >grit< more than exceeded our expectations. its a masterpiece of stripped down techno that brings to the fore all the parts we like from the original, while taking it in a completely different direction. special artwork by pedro carvalho de almeida.

mowars 7th release is an all-belgian production. belgian producer ozka, who released on aesthetik records back in 2006 and was part of the 6th sense collective during the mid 90s with releases on dave angels rotation, is back in the studio churning out tracks. his hidden roots ep on mowar shows his love for basic mental grooves with clear detroit and uk techno influences.

here we have a double a-side 12-inch, with an intriguing new development of the secondo sound. still banging, still aimed at the club but with a sense of maturity and laid-backness, that the previous secondo material for dreck records might not have been centred around. the whole outlook has become more house orientated and we are very excited about this new mixture of the secondo splice-funk with the steadiness of early 90s house generating its own idiosyncratic sound. on the a-side, i think im gonna likeestablishes the housey mood of the 12straight off. a brief vocal sample is dotted over a relaxed rhythm until a break mid-track introduces the second half to its full extent and bloom. ædoktor panglosson the b-side continues with the mid-tempo flavour set out by the aside and is defined by a steady build up towards a disco sample beautifully placed towards the end of the track, where a heavy bass line cuts short the euphoria of disco strings. the sampling and references in both tracks have been pushed to the background and mentioning any of them would not do this exciting new material any justice. its all fresh!

a collection of rare and very sought-after underground british disco, funk and soul tracks avoiding the obvious hits that have been on a million cdÆs already. many of these tracks never went beyond a very small local release but have since become very collectable - buying this lot would set you back somewhere in the four figures.
back street brit funk is the latest compilation from dave lee aka joey negro released on the z records label. the double disc album features highly collectable tracks from the late 70s through to the mid-80s with sleeve notes from soul weekender veteran mark webster.

akin to deconstruction itself, >the gift< symbolised the credible mid 90s dance hit. surrounded by a fog of cheap commercial fodder, way out wests roberta flack-sampling crossover anthem shone like a beacon, reaching the top 15 of the uk singles chart in 1996.
kicking off the new package is way out wests own 2010 remix. toughening up the original break based drums and adding a few new synth lines is all wow needed to do to breath a second life in their ubiquitous track.
gui borattos remix takes the track into deep tech house territory. gui flips the track to a straight 4/4 beat, adding some organic percussion, side chained chords and his trademark warm distorted synths to create a truly euphoric groove.
