marijata was a group made up of three members – kofi electric addison on drums, bob fischlan on organ and nat osmanu on guitar, hailing from ghana. ‘this is marijata’ is the groups first lp, released originally on the gapophone label – it is pure, rootsy, raw, driving african funk music of the highest order, now highly sought-after in both its original and previously reissued forms.

repress from their 1982 12-on shout - comes with additional 1981 demo version from the sargasso sea track. shoc corridor was the london post-punk quartet of paul o’carroll (voice, synth), andy garnham (synth, drum), chris davis (guitar, bass, e-bow) and nogi prass (synth) named after the sam fuller film from 1963. chris met nogi shortly after moving to london in 1979 – they started playing music together, fell madly in love, and decided to form a band. they recruited andy, who had previously played in a band with stephen luscombe of blancmange, and lyricist and vocalist paul. their influences were wide reaching: kraftwerk, neu, cabaret voltaire, brian eno, pil, and joy division.

originally cut in 1990, joe lewis “i can t wait” is one of the classic songs produced with singer darryl goodlett together under the alias of “survival”. now back in official repress and remastered including vocal and instrumental versions, previously unreleased. chicago house at its best.

following the success of ‘ride’ with miss kittin, eminent sci+tec founder dubfire returns with another chaos-conjuring techno composition. previously the sole-preserve of his epic sense-blurring hybrid show, dubfire is finally unleashing ‘dust devil’… his first solo release in several years, ‘dust devil’ is all about precision momentum. a move that dubfire’s made his signature, you can physically feel movement and destination throughout. especially as we reach the short breakdown where the riff revolves faster and higher, providing space for the echoed stabs that whirl and twist around you intensely. as the drums re-ignite, the riff is suddenly converted into groove energy as the jack-minded persistence brings the elements back together with pure focus. this is what ali has to say… “this was an instrumental i had done that i wasn’t quite sure what to do with. it wasn’t strong enough for a lead single and it always felt as though there was something missing, perhaps a spoken or sung vocal. so i sort of put it out of my mind until it was time to compile the music for the hybrid show back in the summer of 2013. once i had the backbone of the set list, along with the visual look, there seemed to be a more defined mood and look. and when i happened upon this track again it seemed to have been tailor-made for this show. it was also nice to insert something no one had heard before to break things up a bit.

samo records second release comes from australia s tunnel signs, who has previously released on cutters records, nein records, days of being wild, to name a few. -ultraviolet,- a ready-for-the-floor collaboration with moderna (ghostly, lumiere noir), blends a stick-in-your-head vocal with hard electro for radiantly retrofuturistic results. -carbonate- emanates classic industrial vibes with a heavy, pumping bassline and soaring, melodic synths. the markus gibb (rttb) remix of -ultraviolet- strips the original of its prominent synths while adding a healthy dose of slinky, hypnotic beats and dissonant samples. wt records willie burns turns -carbonate- into a big-room-rave anthem: driving rhythms punctuated by noisy squelches under heavy synth loops.

pt.ii sees tale of us collaborating with ovend, a french producer whose only prior output is a pair of eps for amandra s ahrpe label. mathew jonson, hunter/game and keith carnal are also among those making their afterlife label debut, while recondite, woo york and aether are back after previously appearing on the label.

dark entries present -a tape-, a double lpof early work by helena hauff, a dj and record producer based in hamburg, germany. at university she studied fine art, physics, and systematic music science. she previously was a resident at hamburg s golden pudel club, where she hosted a night called birds and other instruments. as a selector she weaves energetically between electro, new wave, and ebm. her music, often recorded live in one take, has a raw intensity to it. she debuted with an ep on werkdiscs back in 2013 followed by records for lux_rec and bunker sublabel panzerkreuz as well as two collaborative eps for pan, produced under the name black sites with fellow pudel resident f#x. ‘a tape’ is a compilation of helena’s earliest recordings from 2011 and 2014, originally released on limited cassette by handmade birds in 2015. clocking in at over 50 minutes, this collection spans hauff’s musical universe, from jacking acid-techno to krautish zone-outs and scuzzy feedback interludes. it’s tempting to consider it helena’s debut album, but she views these tracks as mostly forgotten sketches left on the cutting room floor. it a gripping collection of deep, sinister analog synth sequences, industrial dissonance, and heavy percussion. her equipment set up was a roland alpha juno 2, juno 60, tb-303, tr-707 and tr-808. both of the discs end with hauff stepping outside of the intentionally stiff, robotic rhythms, instead showing her skill at crafting less conventional electronic sounds. all songs have been mastered by james plotkin with vinyl eq and lacquer cut by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the record is housed in a custom made jacket designed by eloise leigh, featuring a checkered graphic and black lines, highlighted by yellow and green for maximum visual tension. each copy includes a double-sided postcard with notes.

not an animal records was formed in 2015 out of the ashes of the london-based party bad passion, and has thus far welcomed the likes of man power, ess o ess and eric duncan to release on the label. now they turn to james hadfield, a relatively new producer previously spotted on to rack & ruin and me me me. on this four-tracker he deals in brooding synthwave tones mixed with classic jack track rhythms. literate is just the kind of taut, sinister club creeper we can t get enough of, while buried answers takes a skippier but no less moody approach. on the remix front, jamie blanco takes the prize, turning buried answers- into a bombastic slice of driving synth pop.

a-side discomix, one of the rarest and best wackie s 12inches, b-side previously unreleased wicked 70s roots! killer vintage bullwackies! the happy love song was originally released on a tribesman 12inch, one of the least known but most killer wackies 12inches of its day. a propulsive rhythm is behind the group licking back the tune cut by the iq s in jamaica a couple years earlier. the b-side was retrieved from tape, an unknown vocalist extolling the virtues of the roots rock reggae coming from wackie s studio in the turbulent new york city of the 1970s. a must have for all wackie s diehards, another level of the pyramid unearthed, and more to come!

brokntoys techno series eidetic continues with crystal maze. gijs poortman & marco spaventi form crystal maze, a sporadic project when they both get the time away from their busy solo projects. the project has previously graced the labels of bio rhythm, echovolt & adepth audio. here they present 4 tracks cutting between rolling techno, deep jacking grooves and beatless excursions.

the first release on youth - a new label from andrew lyster, comes from portland based artist yard. hailing from the dark woods of the west coast of the united states, yard brings together a collection of tracks from the archives alongside some new material. canopy and white fog were originally released on the album deciduous flood plains, and have been reworked for this release. marshall acid is pressed to vinyl for the first time having previously only been available digitally via event horizon. yard’s gritty sound evokes a spectrum of gnarled city life to organic atmospheres. the release comprises of field recordings, micro-cassette mangles, bass kicks, a live jam between x0xb0x and a modded tr-606 and water drops percolating through the mixes to get that urban hum and grit running up against the forest.

the next set of the japanese musical tales on hhatri s imprint comes from takecha (aka takeshi fukushima), a producer who has played a part in creating some of the seminal pieces of house music that have originated from japan. his music is characterised by the perfect marriage of experimentation and emotional content. for those that know, takecha s first ep kind of deep released on his own imprint, gwm records, in 1995 is a secret gem among japanese house music collectors. only 100 copies were ever available and it is a subtle reminder of what and how deep house should sound like. takecha provides no less in a tale of shiga four gorgeous tracks that provide some insight into his own creative, albeit humble genius in his approach to producing music. fresh off the press are three previously unreleased tracks with the addition of freak out. released in 1998. tip!

one of the rarest funk 45s in existence and the rarest 45 on ellis taylor s forte label flipped with a previously unreleased acetate (has a little bit of background noise but what you gonna do when there is only one copy in the world, we did out best to make it sound good and it does). both tracks are stone cold deepfunk killers. super black is from the tapes and sounds amazing (better than the original) so go destroy a club with this.

joe morgans stop them is killer late 70s militant roots, self-produced and originally released on his own jomor music house label (under the name billy joe morgan) in nyc. awesome vocal, majestic horns, heavy rhythm, a shining example of the brilliance of late 70s roots reggae and how perfectly suited the style was for the extended mix 12inch single discomix format. we ve added something special for this reissue (now on joe s main imprint fish tea). not only do we have the original 12inch replicated in full, but also an awesome and previously unreleased late 80s digital recut of the tune entitled warrior. unfortunately a dub version for this cut was never mixed, but we are grateful to have uncovered another gem from mr. morgan, one of the crucially under recorded and underrated artists of his time.

this anthology brings to light the music of robert Æolus myers, featuring recordings from 1982 to 2006 that were previously available only on cassette or cd.
the music within “a retrospective” tells the story of a man whose music elevates its listeners to a place of inspiration and enlightenment. often ethereal, Æolus’ music is driven by synthesizers, melodic flutes, sweeping patterns, and subtle rhythms to seed inspiration from deep within the listener.
one might assume that Æolus carved a new path for electronic music in hawaii, but the islands never quite fully embraced the burgeoning new age scene that Æolus found himself a part of during the 1980s and the early 1990s.
few artists in hawaii have produced a body of work, let alone embarked on a musical journey, such as the one that Æolus has created.
for aloha got soul, this release marks a new chapter of bringing rare and relatively unknown music of hawaii to the surface.
