concealed sounds is a brand new label from the copenhagen based producer and dj martinez. the label is set up as a platform for the more deeper shade and experimental sound of techno and house music. it will feature releases by martinez himself, but also showcase some new talents as well as well known colleagues from the scene. and as the label name suggests each release will include a hidden sound, beat, groove or ambient piece. the first release comes courtesy of martinez, and its called: hollow ep. it starts off with a 14 minute piece of modern modular based techno. deep hypnotic rhythms lay down the foundation while high pitched noisy metallic sounds build over the hollow groove, before the baseline kicks in to lift everything to another level. the piece finally breaks down completely, to an almost horror-film-soundtrack like ambience before the groovy rhythms find their way back to bring the track to life again

a collaborative effort between marquis cooper (svengalisghost) and lili schulder (51717), this project was born in the winter of 2013. what can best be described as non-stop electronic erotic cabaret, the duo played a series of improvised performances which served as a structural backbone prior to the recording of this album. finished in merely two weeks, this 8 song double lp acts as a complete listening experience, engrossed in the down beat primitive electronics of the past whilst pushing further into the self-created anti-beat world of today. pulsing tones, off beat drums, melancholic vocals, and overall dark vibes characterize, but do not solely define what it is to truly trust in pain. mastered and cut by matt colton for maximum impact.

in the 1970s the american composer henry flynt started a series of pieces under the title >new american ethnic music<. in so doing he worked together native styles of music such as blues, country or hillbilly with electronic production methods to make something altogether new. so far in germany it has never been attempted to rework folklore electronically for a compilation. however, this picture changes if one redefines the idea of who the population is. incomers have brought new >national anthems< to germany, which means - even the portuguese fado, the african gnawa, the croatian klapa or the vietnamese quan ho are these days at home in germany. with the cultural project >heimatlieder aus deutschland< (native songs from germany) founded by former spex editor mark terkessidis and label manager jochen kühling all the various styles of traditional folk music now found in germany has been collected. thirteen of the songs recorded for the project have now been transformed by contemporary electronic producers to present a >new german ethnic music<. but why remixes? for one thing electronic music has recently focused a lot on the past (ghost music, hypnagogic pop etc.) – electronic editing is well suited to follow the effects of the immigrant music which the >imaginary national anthems< has created. furthermore the projects instigators were curious how >electronic musicians< would handle folk music and folk songs which is a hugely difficult task. to this end artists were sought out who could get along with the idea of each music style and who are known to already have experimented with the human voice. the results are as varied as the music styles and djs involved. some melodies remain completely intact while others are abstracted beyond recognition. margaret dygas associative approach ensured that she presents a polish song about a girls arranged marriage with a claustrophobic feeling. with his remix of the marrabenta of mozambique mark ernestus has continued the rhythmic experiments he is known for with jeri jeri. thomas mahmoud translated gnawa into dub and finaly ulrich schnauss turned the song of the italian chorus of >donni so< into a hymn for the horizon-expanding power of migration.hopefully this compilation will also expand some horizons.

there is music that is made from the outside looking in. the textures are vibrant and the beats bang, but there is a hollow radiance at the core. it is pantomime. then there is los angeles alfred darlington aka daedelus, who has released a dozen albums in a dozen years straddling countless sub-genres. they are united by his insistence on letting his emotions guide the blueprint. if you have listened to his music, you understand. there is a balance between the direct and the obtuse that cant be articulated in words. this is part of the subtext for drown out, daedelus most elegiac album. his debut for anticon is a heart-on-sleeve meditation devoted to loss, coded language, and the maddening failures of communication. and yet you can still bob your head to it.

mr. statik is back on mos ferry with his new ep roll down the shutters. and he got massive support from sasha perera (jahcoozi). she performed the laid-back vocals on this release. remixes by dapayk and daze maxim complete the package - but enough with the name dropping. the original track shows influences in dub, but with an elegant touch.

the innocence of christine hobergs vocal on clair de lune, slowly but quietly, crept its way into a lot of peoples lives. the claude debussy inspired track could only demand equally tasteful remixes…

hvnxx is one of the most special projects weve taken part in as a label. some months ago the xx and young turks asked our artists to remix tracks from coexist. it was a big honour and also a big responsi- bility, specially considering that the xx is one of our favourite bands. the outcome of such challenge is a four-track ep that showcases the sound of both well-established members of the hivern family, such as marc pinol and new jackson, and upcoming talents such as round and mistakes are ok. all four remixes are pretty different among them, but they all manage to maintain the distinctive spirit of the original songs in their own way. marc pinol takes fiction to the good ol days of chicago house, laying the original vocals on top of analog drum-machines and a rubbery bassline to that suggest an imaginary collaboration between adonis and oliver sim. the elusive mistakes are ok maintains the tropical vibe of reunion but provides a warped atmosphere combining breezy chimes with static haze and a propulsive bass that boosts the song towards the second part of the remix. hiverns latest signee round transforms the fragility of missing into a soothing house cut through uplifting organ chords and vigorous rhythms fulfilling dancefloor demands without loosing its melancholic character. finally, new jackson proves once again his knack with nocturnal ambiences flipping swept away into a sensuous deep-house gem guided by an absorbing piano and a slow but steady groove. the release comes in an embossed sleeve with artwork designed by arnau pi. hvnxx is a co-release with young turks.

emmas third strike comes from stuff, one of frances most exciting new talents. to have fun and pretender are only two examples of his producer skills but they already give you an impression of his work!

when you hear the name wild culture, an image of a wild tribe living in the jungle may come to mind. although, when talking about these artists we are not talking about a bunch of wildlings, but of two young and talented guys who live deep in a forest in austria.

the talented spanish dj pairing of scan mode and alvaro sanchez, came together at the beginning of the year to launch not only their raw rootz alliance but also their own label of the same name

optimo trax is an offshoot label of optimo music for tracks aimed at djs/dancefloors. yes, we know there are too many record labels already, but we felt an overriding desire to start another one as so much music that didnt seem quite right for optimo music (i.e. music that was specifically designed for dancing) kept coming our way. like the parent label, optimo trax will release music by new artists and excavate forgotten classics. luma is a project by dave clark from glasgow. dave had his first release as a member of state of flux in 1993 on t&b vinyl, the label twitch ran with his dj partner of that era, brainstorm. twitch and dave have continued to work together in various ways ever since. he has released records as truffle club, and as big ned on optimo music as well as working with twitch from 2005 - 2010 remixing a plethora of artists under the optimo (espacio) moniker before fatherhood necessitated him focusing on changing nappies rather than programming synths. dave has also recorded under various aliases for r&s, numbers, stuffrecords, dissident and wireblock. the twentieth anniversary of that first release seemed a fitting date for dave to unleash his monster new club music alter ego, luma on optimo trax. twitch thinks dave is the best producer in scotland and endlessly weeps into his gin and tonics about how unprolific dave is, so was ecstatic when the 4 killer tracks were delivered that make up this third optimo trax ep. these have been thoroughly road tested over the last few months at gigs around the world.

rare strictly groove #01 is the first chap. of a series of 12 inches which include the best unreleased tracks from artists already in the labels roster and very close friends. this v/a open with *waltz to share* by avenir, a quite old track from the very superb catalogue of our favorite producer from palermo. modern and fresh deep house, enriched by the beautiful voice of clara and some precise arrangements of space sounds and more vocals. also we find two tracks by salvatore stallone, one of the artist is influencing more at this time, with his unique and amazing jazzy touch and incredible eclectism. *etes* and *brian off* are both very concrete underground pearls, inspired by masterpieces of the past. but the main theme of this release is dedicated to *the king* by daughters & sons. some expert house rhythms and groove with his name looped in an involving memory.

in a few short years laurel halo has demonstrated an unnerving ability to question established idioms in electronic music. throughout her body of work the michigan-born producer has expressed musical representations of merged dualities, spirituality in the inorganic, space in the claustrophobic, hope in dread. as a result there is something uncanny about laurel halos sound - the sonic templates may change, but the challenging of divides remains. laurel halo returns to lp format after two critically acclaimed eps with the driving, meditative *chance of rain*.

the allstar collaboration continues, following the previous bestselling golf channel releases from these two heavyweights rhythm odyssey is a production alias of the one and only dean meredith (chicken lips, goat dance etc) here he’s teamed up with dr dunks (eric duncan, rub-n-tug) with a view to concocting the very finest analogue assembled proto house and modern disco. ‘saffron’ has been ripping up floors since a handful of promos surfaced before summer in insistent piano motif powered along by beefed up but never bullying drums ‘night addict’ on the flip pitches things down and links up a bubbling acidic arpeggiator bass with dismembered vocals and light touch keys. a bouncy little palate cleanser after the spice bomb on the a.

after time spent whipping up singles for moodmusic and my best friend amongst others, maurice aymard makes the leap to the long-player with a selection of jams that reflect his propensity for live instrumentation and thoroughly musical constructs within the disco-inflected realms of house music. as if metro area were played out by hand, tracks such as home groove hard on plush live bass lines, poignant rhodes chords and romantic lead synths. gui boratto turns up to chip in to colours & drops with its more prominent techy backbone, but that s offset by the non-dancefloor roll of 1994 . it s a diverse album that provides the perfect platform for a skilled craftsman to explore, er, his craft.

audiolith - musical luckybag with a masterplan. ten years from now, back in 2003 the label started as musical one-man-show without any kind of business plan. a decade has passed since then and audiolith grew into a proper company with two associates, employees, office, online mailorder store and not less than 200 releases under its belt. but still some things never change, especially when it comes to release politics. no matter what ever style comes in whenever the boss likes it there will be a release. no compromise, no fear of failure that is what audiolith is all about and lars lewerenz is, has been and stays the musically approving authority, no matter if we talk electropunk, drum n bass, indie or punkrock, hiphop, trap, deep. emotin-driven house or electropop. his widely varied taste is the reason why audiolith still remains fresh and surprising a musical luckybag, but one with a masterplan. now the year is 2013 and audiolith is still loved by many - and hated by some for giving away golden gifts to fans instead of waiting for presents itself.

wph 019 brings us art of tones with lauer remixes. art of tones is of course the much-praised aka of llorca, has long since moved on from his f-communications days and is without a doubt one of the finest and most accomplished house music producers of our time. but we digress, because isnt this all about the music?

shift ltd has already created quite the stir with its inaugural outings. the italian imprint, owned and helmed by gianluca marcelli in collaboration with francesco gori , has already featured originals and remixes by the likes of fabio della torre, nasty boy and dj spider, but it s their latest – a 4-track various artist ep – that looks set to cement their fledgling status as house purveyors of some repute.

the long awaited follow up to the critically acclaimed *a fistful of dubplates* (zoom records) which featured dj harvey and was championed by the likes of françois kevorkian, ashley beedle, dimitri from paris and david morales to name but a few. this time dub versions of four double yellow tracks from their recently released album *life in the slow lane*.

some may know pional as the john talabot collaborator responsible for stand tracks *destiny* and *so will be now* from his critically acclaimed *fin* album - an album frequently ranked as one of the best electronic records of 2012. his invisible/amenaza ep brings the groove and audio-perfectionism of these collaborations but adds an unsettling sense of paranoia which brings the music depth and tension - *invisible amenaza* translates as invisible threat. pionals influences arent really worn on his sleeve, but the forward thinking producer adds his influences of the zombies, roy ayres, and the police into a sound that manages to work on the dancefloor as well as the headphones.
