following a joint live performance in 2016, butter sessions present the latest collaborative effort from albrecht la brooy (analogue attic) & sleep d (butter sessions). this ep sees al & sd blend their respective styles in a stimulating way. from 50 begins the ep with steady 909 grooves and a subtle oscillating acid bass that builds into another dimension. hotham breaks the pace with atmospheric space leads looking down on a mountain of kick drums. banksia is the most psychedelic of the four, planting seeds of heavily resonating synths atop of floating drum rhythms and warm melodies. lastly, sleeping patterns takes it down a few notches into a daydream of flute-like synths and distant nostalgic vocals.

almost 10 years have passed since onra arrived with the charmingly eccentric chinoiseries lp. 32 hip-hop beats formed the sample-based project dusty chinese vinyl hissing and crackling throughout resulting in an intriguing and spontaneous mix of the producers interest in exploring a newly-discovered style of music with his love for classic hip-hop production. using the style of analogue mpc production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly chinese music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in chinese music. the chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. in that way, pt.3 is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one. onra finishes this epic trilogy with class as a result of extended record digging across the far east and the producer s own development over the preceding 10 years.

gents & dandy s are finally back with a 3rd limited 12- vinyl release and this time it s an artist ep by the hands of the greece, athens based achilleas dimitracopoulos, better known as fog. he s contributed to the house music movement since the late 90s and has previously released on labels like noir music, dieb audio, apparel music, seven music, and just recently suena hermosa. collaborations and remix work happened for kindimmer, patrick zigon or even kruse & nuernberg to name just a few.

to the untrained ear a collaboration between mosaic boss steve o sullivan and minimal house maestro ricardo villalobos may not seem like the most obvious sound clash. however, dig a little deeper and you ll find that both these artists have a long history and shared love of stripped back aesthetics and dubbed out rhythms carving out respective sounds that have never strayed far from their roots. sullric is the result of a daylong session at the end of 2016 where the pair plugged in, switched on and set everything to cycle: recording several hours worth of material to tape with an edit of their favourite passage worked into two versions in post-production.

new imprint ocd’s first release comes from portland native aaron carlson who, with his ac$ alias, has generated quite a buzz in underground circles of late, off the back of a few highly sought-after records. ‘do u know what u represent?’ is a slice of rolling tech-house that utilises vocal snippets amidst a flurry of 909 hats while the rhodes-laced ’more odds’ dials up the swing with a nod to early prescription releases. on the b side, ‘just like you’ is a more heady affair, seeing lazy chords sitting over a nebulous bassline and assorted weirdness, while the acid-tinged, atmospheric ‘organ morph’ is sure to find favour with fans of binh or nicolas lutz.

language is a tricky thing. it’s possible to convey the most beautiful and heartfelt experiences with just a few words but meanings can be lost in translation. language itself being just a symbol pointing to the actual thing, like fingers pointing to the moon it’s key not to mistake the finger for the actual moon. if you do you might miss all the heavenly glory the finger is pointing to. the map is not the territory. kiani & his legion is back on sohaso with the next chapter in his sonic explorations. a mini-album that’s more than the sum of it parts, drawing you in with a story worth to be told. using a language that doesn’t need to be explained trough words, the symbols merge with their meaning trough sound. the story commences with a female voice whispering gently to you to ‘close your eyes and fly’ and while making your journey don’t forget to ‘breath’. you get introduced to the sturdy drum patterns and eerie string pads that have become main ingredients for kiani’s soundworld. eindeloos takes an irresistible groove and badass walking bass winding up between endless flanging spirals. oval flight starts out with the cheeky sound of an electric harp but inside it hides a seed that sprouts to enormous proportions. beneath the beauty you can feel something sweltering, wanting to expose itself. it links back to the beginning and finally lifts you off with a grand gesture. if you remember me then i don’t care if veryone else forgets, uses haunting atmospheres that remind of 80’s science fiction or the eerie vibes found in twin peaks to provide safe landing ground beneath the feet after your flight. l.o.v.e. forms an appropriate conclusion to the story, reflecting with a melancholic chord progression, soul healing choirs and the phonetic symbols ‘lima, oscar, victor, echo’ repeating till infinity.

after multiple cassette and 12” releases through kastil’s stale in 2016, it’s time for irazu’s latest addition to the series of complex techno works. “shtamm” is a package that contains four original cuts + a remix by specialist of high-end machine music regis. “refused to be found” is a soaring travel through moods and sonic landscapes which at times resonates like a helicopter flying through an inner city estate building. the aesthetic nature of the opening track is extended through “shtamm”. a multi dimensional piece of work that showcases a more submersive side of irazu s broad pallette. “last hours” is a cinematic stroke of vivid pads that sound like they were extracted from a remastered russian thriller classic. regis opens ups the b-side with a rework of “shtamm”. the off-beat machine funk of the remix leaves little of the original mix intact, yet regis has turned it into a staggering piece of ferocity. “torso” is another irazu original that sound like 7.5 minutes of vigorous rhythms and swerving perc elements.

following lone aka matt cutlers stunning sixth album levitates hallucinogenic joyride through breakbeats, he returns to r&s with ambivert tools the first in a series of eps for the floor returning to hypnotic 4/4 excursions. inspired in no small part by the rich seam of house that he’s been excavating with his fine magicwire imprint, a refreshed cutler delivers an ep stacked with sure-fire bullets, crafted for his intoxicating dj sets. first up is crush mood - crunching drums, lush resampled chords and dulcet female vox combine into a heady, peak-time rush. chroma comes off like a lost 90s anthem, with its shimmering vibes, airy chords and bumpy rhythm track. b-side closer from a past life could well be the strongest track on the ep - hazy emulator ii chords, spiral arpeggios, gooey bass and woozy african percussion that finds lone digging deeper into some of his more esoteric house music influences. ambivert tools finds cutler a true master, at the top of his game - taking all hes learned over his many years of beat exploration and condensing it down into rugged house stacked full of nagging melody / harmony that elegantly pays tribute to bygone years whilst simultaneously feeling fresh and vital to 21st century dance floors.

the north east of england is known for its role in helping to shape the uk house and techno club landscape during the late 80 s and throughout 90 s. it’s infectious and raw energy engaged slip-d from a young age exposing him to a number of venues including the riverside, empire, pleasure rooms and the hedonistic rockshots. drawing inspiration from the scene along with potent labels like svek, guidance and shaboom that came in to prominence in the late 90 s, a bedroom studio set up of amassed hardware funded on a basic income was then formed over time. residence in teesdale avenue, regular local car thefts and the wail of the rag and bone man all assembled themselves as a formula of what was happening outside the 4 walls of the studio. the vaulted hypnoelectronix no.1 finally got pressed after some years, and transports us to the true crux of that era. more material to follow in 2017 on the hpnx imprint...

while david moufang, also known as move d, certainly needs no introduction, the label polyfon remained a tip for insiders. it might seem like a long shot, but that’s probably what led to the fact that the paths of david moufang and wolfram both – one of the polyfon founders – crossed a few years back. the erfurt located imprint was mostly recognized for its underdog releases from berlin-based tomtomgroove (the funkman), steffen baldo aka ugly drums from cologne (basement amusement park, the next room) and even workshops mastermind lowtec who released his critically acclaimed angstrom ep with the thuringian label.

perhaps megalodon collective’s description of themselves is the most straightforward ... “sixty feet of prehistoric terror”.
yet that doesn’t quite capture what this norwegian grammy-nominated septet unleashes upon the world. their compositions and improvisations build with slow majesty and release a fiery rain of sonic chaos. contrapuntal insanity creates illusions of order, while high urgency solos and lizard rhythms create illusions of disorder. they seamlessly leap from sounding like the mingus dynasty band trapped on a star cruiser with controls set for the heart of the sun to the pit orchestra from hell performing the soundtrack to a keystone cops movie directed by quentin tarantino.

first opus of a two acts project dedicated to my daughters, the ep opens with romane a very personal track which samples were taken from important moments of my life. the ep continues with my old mind and its jazzy touch, tinged with nostalgia of a not too far rave past…like an echo comes stocker an introspective track with breakbeat rhythms.the ep closes the curtain on this intimate fresco with poetry of oblivion, a tribute to electronica.

‘in time’ is the new album from renegade roots and reggae producer wrongtom and hackney’s veteran breakbeat/jungle mc’s the ragga twins. ‘in time’ strips back the jungle, d&b, garage sound that the ragga twins are recognised for pioneering today, to take you back to the ‘80s reggae and dancehall landscape where they started out. throughout the record, the ragga twins recall and explore a 30-year-long journey, where they uncover prescient lyrics and stories of their youth. wrongtom provides the beats and riddims as a perfect setting for this celebration of the dancehall and reggae scene.

der in texas geborene rhythmus- und bluesgitarrist melvin sparks war einer der großen des soul-jazz. melvin spielte mit lou donaldson, leon spencer, bernard purdie, jack mcduff, jimmy mcgriff, idris muhammad, dr. lonnie smith, charles earland, grover washington jr., reuben wilson und so vielen mehr. auch in den leisesten jahren des soul-jazz blieb melvin durch hip-hop und r&b aktuell. diese veröffentlichung dokumentiert melvins letzte band, nur wenige monate vor seinem tod. der organist beau sasser und schlagzeuger bill carbone arbeiteten seit einigen jahren mit sparks zusammen. die tracks auf diesem album, liebevoll gemischt von gitarrist, produzent und melvin sparks-fan eddie roberts, zeigen, dass melvin auch in den letzten monaten seines lebens wie zu jeder zeit spielte.

subonation of perjury is the latest in the series of heart wreching techno releases from dubiosity for planet rhythm. like always, this release is heavily concentrated on touching synths and growing melodies that might leave the listener in a euphoric gaze. it’s dubiosity’s signature to combine dark and intense techno rhythms with layers of melodic goodness. throughout the whole ep this style is present. elysian fields is the darkest cut of them all but also here a vivid choir comes through to mellow things down. pjotr g and dubiosity join forces for a remix of remy kruyer’s ho chi minh on the b2.
