after a stunning three part compilation released in the second half of 2014, dutch label field is back with another album project, this time from american producer christopher ernst, aka l estasi dell oro, who also records as penalune and is co-founder of the voodoo down label. before now, ernst has proved himself to be adept at crafting deep and atmospheric, excellently ambient techno on a range of labels. varying his tempos and textures, he does acid, raw stuff, tough beats and more industrial grooves. across this new 8-track album, all this and more is explored in captivating fashion. this is an expressive and expansive modern techno album from l estasi dell oro that is perfectly at home on the always interesting field label.

entitled narita, the release is inspired by, and dedicated to, japan, and the tracks are a collage of all the experiences and emotions the producer has picked up there whilst on his travels. this release was also due to be the 44th on the label (which has now made it up to number 67) and so has clearly been cooking for a long time. once again it proves the man behind it to be focused on stripped back and hypnotic grooves, shadowy textures and subliminal synths that are abstract and truly heady. up first, sleepless is a spooky and hypnotic techno roller with icy pads and rubber drums that roll on like a haunted midnight train burrowning deep into your brain. ebisu is even more reserved, with just a light, skipping kick and tinkling, glassy keys suspending you in a wide open space of abstract atmospheric soun d. on th e flip side, mountain splitter is more urgent and immediate, with nervy pads this time racing alongside woodpecker precision and supple drums. it s heady stuff that really distracts you from the world before finally trance is a wash of grainy white noise and groaning synths that soundtrack a word deep down in the depths of the ocean. svreca is a master of getting deep inside both body and brain and does so in different but captivating ways with all four of these cuts.

the long running one records overseen by adam shelton and subb-an returns with it s 32nd release and first of the year, more importantly warp is the first full ep for the label from mr. ashique subhan! with a style very much cultivated across releases on spectral, crosstown rebels, visionquest, cocoon, a new record from subb-an will always be greeted with anticipation. lead track warp is a typically classy slice of effervescent house music, funnelling deep and dubby textures underneath a strident bassline and crisp, intricate drum programming. complementing this, tv is an equally charming production who s worming bass surges work well against the vocal contribution from jacob phono.

tensal is the first guest artist of the ownlife imprint and opens the year 2015 with a piece of authentic techno in all its forms. four initiatic cuts that re-define the sonorous shades of this label. ritual i is a return to the rough sound of the late 90s, no concessions, pure effectivity for the beginning of the record. the a side is completed with the more hypnotic part of the ep. a deep track, dry and minimalist with the elements needed to create the mystical atmosphere which floods this reference. ritual iii is absolute energy. a constant and atmospheric progression is perfect to create an impact on the dancefloor, maintaining tension to the end. the last track opens the door of the emotional side of the artist and represents a contribution of light to ownlife. a cut of dusty textures and delay tones. a landscape of stabs with a flawless structure for smoky clubs with low light.

as per its penchant for cyberdelic enigmas, jimmy edgars ultramajic outpost is building a core of secretive producers. after closing out 2014 with a record from unknown newcomer crystal bandito, the label will return in 2015 with an offering from semi-anonymous beatmaker aden. the tracks on tanz, which is the german word for dance, are hewn from bouncing drums, vocal yelps, glittering keys, and a few functional white noise-infused breakdowns that pack a solid dose of energy and spirit. tanz 1 lieb is a gentle intermission from the eps intense vitality, with warm and soft pads that lay the foundation for blunted percussion. from rigid pumpers to soothing textures, the tanz ep contains a range of moods to fuel human bodies on the virtual dance floors

opening up with the deep space atmospherics of quiet life the album immediately transports you to another world. the title track is then a melodically lush and uplifting affair with curious synth patterns ebbing and flowing beneath crisp percussion. tracks like we search for answers combine organic, wooden textures with more synthetic and trippy synth sounds that are as far away from your standard sample packs as can be imagined. across the course of the album there are dark, moody and emotive pieces like worship (previously released in extended form on the mdl02 single) featuring qzen who reads a poem by patience agbabi in tantalising fashion as well as heavyweight, dubbed out techno groovers like shadow theory. make it true (of which seth troxler will be releasing an extended edit on his play it say it label, complete with high profile remixes) is another great collab featuring the vocals of jojo de freq, and the track itself is a harmonious, radiant house jam that is humid and human in equal measure. the otherworldly, snaking feel free again showcases berkson & what s ability to coax alluring emotions out of their machines and closer logan five wraps things up in suitably spangled, textural fashion. despite the fact much of this album will work on a dancefloor in the hands of the right dj, there s an invention and musicality to it that renders the whole thing hugely listenable away from the club. a testament to berkson & what s analogue invention and fluid ideas, keep up appearances really is a master electronic oeuvre.

refined selector and esteemed producer, steve braiden breaks out on his own with the off out label after some excellent releases for the likes of rush hour and joy orbison s now defunct doldrums label. its a good day when there is some new braiden productions to soak up, and hopefully the establishment of off out will see them appear with more regularity in the future. as an opening statement, apex of the sun s way is a powerful one indeed! the title track is characterised by the sort of rhythmic poise we have come to expect from a braiden production, with searing emotive textures rubbing up against some of the crispest drums heard this year. - solar poise- is equally memorable, with strange ghostly vocals trapped deep in the mix and an unpredictable synth careening around the channels.

the extended project *inversion* follows his three track release *sleepwalkers* in 2013 and *timelines* in 2014. om unit was schooled via metalheadz. although he earned his stripes via hip hop as dj 2tall it was breakbeat-hardcore and jungle that shaped his attitude towards electronic music and the ferocious trail blazing of the metalheadz crew was an undoubted inspiration. thus it makes perfect sense that his take on this sound, his contribution to moving this sound forward comes via metalheadz. the sonic nature of the project is rooted in london, chicago and detroit- drums, subs and textures.

constellation andromeda is the new release on modularz featuring spanish artist and mental disorder owner reeko who is also a member of the pole group family whos work has spanned over a decade. reekos debut ep on modularz gives a nice variation of deep and hypnotic textures and grooves that make this a choice example of where the producer is headed.

vanguard sound follows up on guerilla soul’s self-titled ep with label co-head chris mitchell delivering feng shui flow. feng shui flow is an exploration into deep harmonic textures in the form of three distinct offerings. a1 primordial gravitational waves- as the name suggests, inspired by the possible discovery of gravitational waves believed to be reverberations of the big bang. staccato bass and drums provide the heavy background for a pulsing bass wave, accented by synths and chords conjuring up visions of interplanetary manifestation. b1 eurínome- melancholic and intensely emotive chords and bass layered with intricate drums to paint this impression of the mysterious water goddess. b2 4th density- a synth heavy offering with several layers of bass, string like patches, and a sprinkling of choral sounds driven by a pair of kick drums into a plane of telepathy, harmony and ascension.

industry sheds all personalized effort and tests how far you can get by using presets only. all sounds are factory presets of 3 obsolete 1990s japanese workstation synths, all effects are presets, all notes are quantized and most panning is purely accidental (laid out in the preset sounds). industry doesnt rely on successful presets, but on failed sounds of now obsolete synthesizers - industrial assumptions of where culture will go, but where it chose not to. the result is a surprisingly pleasant listening experience with effortless grooves and rich textures - and mildly demonic connotations. from smooth to kicking - a conveyor belt enjoying mood swings. as beautiful as the scheduled meeting of a pvc sheet and a thermoform mould on a workbench.

the legendary nico fidencos scor for black emanuelle is by turns sultry and serious, fun and funky. the sound is sophisticated, groovy and melodically memorable, mixin latin rhythms - in a continuous sexual tension with the exotic images of the beautiful laura gemser - and electronic textures that show the influence of early techno masters such as giorgio moroder and kraftwerk.

the seventh modal analysis release comes from athenian producer and dj, anfs. following his remix for kondaktors signal 1, anfs returns to the label with his debut release, ground, a four track ep which consists of original material. borrowing sounds from early twentieth century folk greek culture, the ep is dominated by a rhythmic canibalistic spirit and a noisy distorted cue. ground 1 functions as an introduction, or rather ones initiation to the mystic rituals that prevail. the artist uses drones and distorted textures which increase in ground 2 and are backed up by drums that beat in a hard-and-slow ethnic tonality. ground 3 reveals a paroxysm of emotions which comes as a result from the combination of basslines and vocals that create a complex and twisted vortex. the trip ends with ground 4, a more stripped down monotonic ensemble that serves as an epilogue and a catharsis.

liverpool-based producer bantam lions has long been part of the scenery records family, helping label boss asok launch the imprint with 2012s one to one ep. here he returns with his third 12 inch for the label. lead cut *recollections* is particularly good, delivering a deep and attractive fusion of fuzzy analogue warm, dreamy melodies and intoxicating chords. he ups the tempo further on *many years later*. which layers dubbed-out chords and swirling textures over an energy-packed techno groove. the accompanying remixes are pretty tasty, too, with the cyclist particularly impressing with his detroit techno-goes-lo-fi interpretation of *recollections*. that said, the dreamy, new age-influenced downtempo take from mood hut regular cloudface is pretty darn good, too.

tommy four seven is back on clr with another challenging release, titled ox. featuring two original versions and a remix by oscar mulero, one of spain s most tireless and trendsetting techno ambassadors.as usual, tommy uses his profound skills as a sound designer and his do-it-yourself approach to sound in general to shape unique textures and haunting beats, which make his productions easily recognizable and compelling

like stepping into a warm electronic sound bath, chaim’s latest release for visionquest ripples with pulsing sonic textures and propels forward at a softly galvanic pace as the slowly emerging melody takes hold in underwater. b side remember when is just as compelling - a slightly tougher edge and darkly euphoric atmosphere injected with sporadic chimes, disembodied voices and dramatic synth stabs. this is a truly hypnotising release.

the french producer 1977 delivers with his first ep a bold and subtle blending of ambient textures, deep pads and raw rhythms perfectly mixed with some minimal sequences. in brief, a fine and complete piece of electronic music, made with constant attention to detail.

bright sounds present their third release, from paris-based producer shlømo - owner of kindred spirit label taapion. having made a big impression in late-2013 with taapion s debut release the harvest ep (featuring conforce and stephen brown remixes), shlømo now presents his second full solo ep: rechaïm explores similar sonic textures to those found on taapion and bright sounds releases so far - a richly layered and dense world of dub techno atmospherics with dancefloor versatility. the four tracks all allow for different aspects of shlømo s exemplary production skill to shine through, marking the producer alongside bright sounds owner and fellow parisian as producers and a&r talents to keep close watch of.

dissonant starts off this season 2014 in ibiza with talented spanish producer medu. this new ep meets the dissonant vision of adventurous and sensuous electronic music. medu’s minimal roots immerse us into wild energetic drums and organic details. shi-sei adventure into loose breakbeat flows with its central drum sample, constantly weaving textures and percussion in and out of the groove for a nerve-tingling trip. bronq has a more free-spirited drums approach,a more steady tech-house beat, with a bit of atmospheric sounds turns surprisingly this tune into futuristic carnival experience.

for our second release on wavereform, we continue our explorations into sophisticated sounds from mostly-unexplored areas with the production debut from juras lietus, a 25 year-old latvian producer from riga whose mysterious origins in this out-of-the-way locale may surprise listeners, but whose sound fits very well into the label’s mission to reform the sound sphere with simple and elegant tracks that demand attention and bring unknown talent deserved notice. lietus wastes no time in showing off his developed dub techno style on >dark frank< as the bold, well-defined contours of the bottom end are contrasted with gentler ambient textures in the opening, it acquires more force as it moves along as he adds harder percussion patterns to the framework while the dense atmospherics progress barely in the background. >direct< is the more subtle and atmospheric of the pair, as crisp, delicate drums develop slowly while also suggesting melody. it too gains strength as it goes though, with ricocheting percussion and a barely-controlled feedback wail leading into a dramatic breakdown before he slowly winds things down in the detail-rich final section. j&#363,,,,,,,ras lietus and latvian techno may be mostly unknown, but this strong showing for wavereform 002 reveals much still to be uncovered in these eastern lands.
