okzharp says ‘most of the music came out of headphone moments in hotel rooms, planes and airports in the brief periods of time that we spent together, mainly on tour, in paris and later vienna’, a city manthe describes as a ‘beautiful dream place’.
okzharp describes manthe as a ‘co-producer’, ‘she selected instrumental sketches and we developed them together, sometimes just keeping the bare bones or a melody or rhythm, or trying different elements or sounds.’

from the twilight zone of rhythm section international comes a new label for 2017: international black. this is the offshoot’s 3rd release this year and the machine shows no signs of slowing down. bradley zero’s ear for new talent continues to pay off as we are introduced to yet another young pair of producers, mallard & lt, going by the name of ‘j deep’. mallard, a 19 yo jazz student who made a big splash with his debut rs intl ep, ‘verte’, returns with a track aimed more squarely at the dancefloor. although hypnotic and ethereal, it packs a punch, with the arrangement and musicality belying mallard’s musical training at trinity college. on the flip side, mallard joins forces with another promising producer who goes by the name ‘lt’ in their collaborational partnership known as j.deep. complex jazz chords swim around 909’s to create an elevating techno roller that climbs and climbs only to give way to sparse rave stabs and ecstatic snare patterns. tried and tested for the best part of a year, these are 2 serious jams, proven to cause dancefloor frenzy.

the sweet and soulful harmonies of the whatnauts spanned a 15-year career in which they recorded three albums and numerous singles, ranging from timeless ballads to temptations-esque politically-charged funk to dancefloor boogie. the music of the baltimorebased group, which featured the angelic falsetto lead of billy herndon, gained relevance for a younger generation via samples taken by the likes of de la soul, a tribe called quest and kanye west. this 2-lp set is a career compendium of their best slow jams, funk grooves and 12-inch club tracks, including multiple unreleased and rare sides.

drumcode continues its commitment to releasing the scene s most cutting-edge techno. with releases this year already from adam beyer, pig&dan, alan fitzpatrick, dense & pika and julian jeweil, this july sees the return of enrico sangiuliano with astral projection. after his remix of mobys of why does my heart feel so bad back in november last year, enrico sought creative inspiration from his travels, transcending that into his productions and long studio sessions during the winter months. the result brings a mind and body melting release from the italian producer. the title track astral projection is a captivating, big room techno masterpiece. deep reverberations punch alongside a sinisterly crisp percussive drive. launching into a groove laden synth modulation of low end textures, it breaks down into an ethereal amalgamation of pads and synths before the vocal launches, taking this track to another level. ‘blooming era has destructive dancefloor intent. there is no holding back with the low end synth modulation which enrico has mastered to perfection. a tightly woven percussive flare moulds flawlessly with the rolling oscillations of the beast of this track. if you have seen label head honcho adam beyer playing anywhere on the globe in the last 5 months, this has been a peak time favourite. road-tested to the max, and with much success.
