shadow sync are back with their latest true techno, full analog release on krd. poles is marked by a percussive sound which despite its inharmonic character yet keeps a trace of tuning making it similar to a voiced percussion. this main sound is arranged to form a sort of pseudo-melody determined by the different intensity, lenght and color of the reverb tail. the 909 delivers both the drum line and the bass line, realized using the tom section. the background is populated by friendly, ceaselessly mutating sonic organisms. magnetic fields is a train rolling through dark, post-industrial landscapes. its built around a drastically eqed 909 tom, a nervous echoed clap and a cross-rhythmic, 3 against 4 hypnotic bass line which evolves in a bell-like sound towards the pause. the atmosphere is saturated with sound vapors and the temperature is dangerously high: play at your own risk!

the hideout deconstruction revisited series is going into phase two, here we go: after the french connection (d julz and paul ritch ) , this new release sees a more international bundle of top class producers : to start , we have dusseldorfs master producer martin buttrich (desolat , planet e , ...) put his magic hands on davide squillace & luca bacchetti s around the bay ( ho001). the track starts with an >acoustic style< beat and, a strong sine sub bass line, evolving to a jacking groove with rising vocal sample , intelligent synth lines , and arabic flute break. on b2 , carola pisaturo ( titbit , claque) delivers a more minimal rework , using bouncy sub bass , vocal snipets , 909 snare and clap ... giving davide squillace and luca bacchettis around the bay a rebirth. on the flip side, mathias kadens ( vakant , cocoon ) relecture starts with a strong shuffled tribal beat , 909 toms , synth lines ... mathias interprets the original elements of around the bay in a very personal way , dropping snipets into reverbs and delays in order to create a deep rising atmosphere untill the track peaks.

it would be a complete mistake for any house imprint not to include a us talent in his catalog, this wont be the case for apersonal music. on its third effort the label takes his first journey to the grounds of american house. from arizona, michael j collins with remix rework from bostons house-sons soul clap, plus the first collaboration for apersonal from maurice aymard. a side single nothing wrong with holding on show us the most eclectic side of the label so far. looped vocals, broken house with a saxo on top. michaels talent goes beyond genres mixing elements from different styles to create this great piece of music. soul clap delivers, as usual, top stuff! in their remix they speed up the bpm and add a hip-breaker bassline taking the original track to the dancefloor war zone. second remix from maurice aymard, himself at the controls plus venezuelan producer garnica hitting the drums, they take the track to a trippy slowmo version, what maurices catalogs as his best remix so far.

two dreamy indie-rock edits by night plane finally show up on wax – the first a haunting slice of deep house replete thats been melting hearts since soul clap dropped it at wmc. it comes paired with a near-ambient dub remix by g$ from w+l that sounds like sade in outer space. >its always the same< takes a throwback sensitive-man vocal with a soft rock touch and layers it into the trippy beached-out chugger it was meant to be.

joel alter blew us away some months ago with his soul clap release on sweatshop! a much under-rated record which makes things go wild everytime its being dropped. now he is back strong with more straight pumping chicago-inspired tracks that continues alter s forays into the rougher, tougher side of house music. simple and effective tracks that reminds us of early raw house projects of jeff mills with basic elements and phat drum machines. joel alter going back to the basics and pushing the right buttons!

this sampler, first of two, holds three tracks from the classic >spelunking< ep, which was originally released on planet e and with which he solidified his name in the scene. track a2, land of the lost dance, is an unreleased track from that era. another fine example which shows that recloose is the don of mixing funk and techno. with this compilation we celebrate reclooses early works from the late 90s, early 00s. this material is often regarded as his best. the compilation includes his best music from that period, both released and unreleased.

the one-two kick drum beat that starts “in the dark of the night” functions as a bit of a tease. instead of merely establishing the languid pace of the track, it has the power of suggestion, and its stark nakedness raises the question of what will happen after the music fully launches. a few seconds later, a punch-drunk, flanging keyboard is the first clue that the listener is in for an off-kilter ride, the sauntering bassline that next appears adds a springy, funk bounce. but it’s the tripped-out, multi-tracked vocals of fernando miranda rios, aka michoacan, the producer behind this slow reveal, that give the song its peculiar, space-yvibe. it’s like david byrne with funk aspirations and a vaguely cosmic feel. the b-side remix, courtesy of italy’s clap rules, feels like more of a re-build. the song has been taken apart and put back together with brand new parts. instead of more relaxed, dazed funk at the core, it’s a glittery, disco-ball splattered track with glossy keys all around.

trouble in paradise is a pure testament to the roots of r&b flavored vocal house. in the danism vox the sweet simplicity of the standard boom & clap intro is well paced and leads into the funky bassline, while the enchanting chords set the stage for the outstanding vocal performance of sean williams. his r&b flavored, distinctive phrasing is mildly reminiscent of john legend, however, seans earthy quality shines through. the passionate & insistent lyrical melody never fails, climaxing into panoramic bridges while the memorable bah de dahsintermittently dot the production. its texture is a reminder of sophisticated nyc funk a la early 80s prelude/west end/sam records with a modern house feel. djs, if you want the ladies on the floor, trouble in paradise (danism vox) is the one to drop!
