bss records returns with the second in a series of va compilations entitled percussive parameters . after successfully launching the series last year, showcasing both emerging and established artists and topping juno s vinyl chart, this one s set to cause a stir. first up is troy gunner, an artist with a wealth of experience and a diverse arsenal of club focused records to his name. ‘pleading shows troy s deeper, more melodic side with atmospheric pads and vocals layered around an intelligent, driven percussive array. as the track progresses, a hypnotic and compelling synth is introduced that draws the listener further in, cementing troy s intuitive abilities in the studio. next up are head honchos silas & snare, who deliver a certified club weapon. memories starts unassuming, mesmerizing and innocuous, before launching the listener into a rolling, dubbed out cut destined to open and close sets across the world s sound systems. on the flip, we bring two exciting and emerging uk producers, agrippa and yak, both delivering their debut 12- offerings. kicking things off is ziplash , a drum workout that demonstrates agrippa s ability to manipulate percussion and sub to the highest caliber, with thunderous claps and kicks weaved over intricate beats and samples. finally, and as the name suggests, showdown is a menacing cut of club weight destined for low ceilings and late nights, with a relentless sub and inimitable groove throughout! as ever, we d like to say a massive thank you to everyone supporting our music, ideas and artists.

chicagoan artist vincent floyd has been releasing music for 27 years now. with stand-out records for the legendary dance mania and some more recent outings through amsterdam connaisseurs rush hour recordings, vincent floyd crafted a 4-track package of original cuts, which will be released as the seventh instalment in the pulp series. the vigorous sounds of “circles (dub)” consist out of loose percussion, piercing synth work and a snappy vocal that cuts through at just the right moments. in the classic style of a sizable amount of dance records throughout the earlier days of dancefloor-music, an instrumental version of “circles” is including on the a2 position. “skewed reality” is an extravert piece of music that revolves around an emotive synth lead and nicely timed drums with a very human feel to them. the soothing pads form the back bone of this journey through exalted melodies. “morning storm” serves as the pulp07 grand finale. in this cut vincent again showcases his ability to mould many melodic elements into a cohesive sounding piece of music. “morning storm” is a bright piece of work with delicate melodies and beautiful playful drum patterns.

miami deep and tech house label sports is hitting its third release with the sultry tones of greek producer salt, who offers up two original tracks of lean and mean tracks to get pumping to. quantum xl features punchy bass, dubby fx and seductive chords that burrow right into the heart of the night, while imago loop takes a sharp turn into dreamy broken beat crafted with light, airy drums and woozy pads for the most blissful of listening experiences. on the remix front, sylphe offer up a re-dub of quantum xl that fattens the bass up further and works more percussive angles into the mix, while martinez deftly swaps imago loop-s breaks out for a slinky micro house beat.

it’s been two years since jef k’s excellent silver network label was in action, so it’s great to see the french mainstay back in action, and with the excellent shade on board no less. the london-based artist brings an addictive, chicago-tinged kind of deep house to the table with “london social club”, all mr fingers bass and deeper-than-deep pads. “initial pass” is no slouch in the slouching department either with its luxuriant chords weaving around a subtly stomping beat. parisian legend ark takes to “london social club” and does a fine job of chopping up the original with his micro-editing ways. “all alone (shade morning remix)” is the perfect closer with its dreamy melodics and 80s boogie inspired beat.

this double-pack cymbolic originally came out in 1995 and found favour with electronic music fans who sought a deeper edge in their music. it s all here, the trademark drum programming, the epic sense that all of the burden bros productions have within them. this is dancefloor music, music for dj s to utilise, tools, but tools with the deepest soul imaginable. listen to terraforming or the symbiont - perfect examples of driving, almost tribal-esque rhythms fused with strings, synth pads and human feeling. cymbolic is for you if you re a fan of detroit techno, but it s also for those who enjoy the deepest electronic sounds. that s not to say it isn t funky though, these tracks will decimate most dance-floors, and therein lies the secret. essential

shadow play, the brand new label owned by parisian artist le loup and his partner pura, drops its second release courtesy of the bossman himself alongside chris carrier. the two men got together in the studio and cooked up some tasty goodness. the first of four tracks on this release is the intergalactic opus phoenix lights , which works off serene pads that transport you out into the cosmos, along with a warm, soothing bassline and electronic chirps and bleeps. research programm (outro) takes us into more obscure realms, as chris carrier and le loup sample a scientific vocal and create a mesmerising bed of sounds underneath it. on the flip we kick off with clouds reflection , another track which features a sample from an old instructional video. this track has minimal composition, with dreamy astral pads, shuffling beats and a grumbling low end. in the second half chris and le loup introduce more twinkling fx, to engage and hypnotise you... to bring the ep to a close we re presented with v-shape , which begins with a layer of clever drum programming aimed straight at the hips. once you re moving get ready for the juicy bassline, and a sultry top end that grips you and gripping progression. the perfect to end an utterly fresh ep..

this is followed by more alluring atmospherics on ‘aporia’, a track that has an elastic b-line and every once in a while an enchanting melody drifts in, switching up the vibe turning things a little more dreamlike.
turn the record and prepare to embark on a ‘random night’. this is sonodab turning up the energy levels and taking you on a trip into another dimension to close out the ep ‘elecmann’, plays out like an ode to the good old electro days, slightly reminicent of juan atkins’ early work as model500. like the rest of the tracks on this release, sonodab adds soft pads in places to change the mood and keep things moving.

welcomed back onto crosstown rebels, no.19 boss jonny white aka art department delivers a raw, techno cut in his modular perspective remix. jonny has seen almost unparalleled success in the world of dance music and continues to be at the forefront of the industry with a huge focus on his record labels and his in-demand label showcases that take the name of his vinyl only label, social experiment.

frankfurt s reboot brings his flavour to the release with intricate percussion and deep underlying pads. growing up in sven vath s omen club, the talented musician now spearheads the new sound of frankfurt and has released on a wealth of labels like circus, moon harbour, cadenza and get physical.

fouk are finally back on heist after their great ‘kill frenzy’ ep in 2014 and have taken mount liberation unlimited along for a remix. we’ve been waiting patiently for new material, challenging the guys to take the signature ‘fouk’ sound to the next level. fouk’s brilliance has been obvious on recent work for their own label outplay and razor ‘n tape, as well as their respective solo projects. we’ve kept a close connection, teaming up whenever possible for heist showcases, with highlights in amsterdam’s “claire” and paris’ “concrete-. seeing their work and enthusiasm made it abundantly clear that it would only be a matter of time before they’d show us what the next step would look -or better yet- sound like. anticipation ran high but boy, do fouk deliver. the excellent ‘with lasers’ ep still very much portrays their own style of loose, live percussion and many layers of funk, but they’ve expanded their vision and even toughened up a bit. their new taste for grit and an interest in the heavier side of funk is probably most evident on the opener ‘f3000&#8242,,,,,, where a thunderous arpeggio is supported by distorted drums and lush cosmic synth stabs. title track ‘with lasers’ is more of a classic fouk track, combining a lovely walking disco bassline and their signature drum programming with… erm… lasers. lots of them. the b side ‘see you on the other side’ sets a different pace, carefully blending guitar licks, rhodesy chords and vocal chops into a lovely groove that feels just as carefree and improvised as it feels exciting. swedish synth nerds “mount liberation unlimited” ran with it and transformed it into a dreamy -pepe bradock goes balearic- track where airy echoed guitars take turns with some equally dreamy and evocative pads.

the third release on raw sounds district sees the label welcoming newcomer, voyd, into the fold with his “thoughts ep”. this one is a real journey through the producers mind. hip hop beats meld with strong house tracks, looped pads, powerful bass patterns and intricate, blown out rhythms. powerful stuff... thoughts...

louie balo guzman dropped this fine slab of ny garage house, his debut ep, way back in 1994 on the legendary eightball records. this 4 tracker showcases all the us influences that were evident on a lot of subsequent uk garage records, it s all here the deep rolling bassline s, pads and that killer mid 90 s era drum programming, shuffling, metallic, funky. a dream for the djs, tools packed with pure soul! across the 4 cuts guzman drops a bevy of styles, each track sounding fresh and most importantly, as we said before funky! as we all know, this era of dance music from the us was extremely fertile, sometimes there are records that deserve more props, often coveted by the digging cognoscenti, and this is one of them, as good as the mood ii swings, the maws, blaze s or any of the other production outfits you d care to mention. somewhere in-between early tribal, deep house, and garage you ll find the boogiebalo ep. a rare record that s a tough one to get your hands on and a truly worthy addition to any self respecting house-heads record stash for real. the boogiebalo ep has been lovingly re-mastered and re-pressed with the original eightball label artwork intact in full conjunction with eightball records, nyc for 2017. dont sleep!

italian artist paul santangelo has been having fun messing with the sometimes po-faced traditions of the house music scene through a raft of home made productions on soundcloud, but now with his venetian causeway label hes able to prove the clout to be found in his music. on this 10inch the arch title generic house traxx actually does a disservice to the quality of the music contained within santangelo does a fine job of whipping up monosynth bass and ethereal pads astride an uptempo beat that, while familiar, has an atmosphere with considerable depth to it. please him on the b side goes further out on a mellow electro tip, plaintive leads and aqueous chords flirting with 808-style beats.

echocord returns late june with a new release, joel alter under his jor-el alias, entitled ‘tilted reality’ and comprising three originals from the swedish artist. currently based in copenhagen, sweden born producer and dj joel alter is a name synonymous with the contemporary techno scene on both his home turf and across the globe, his back catalogue to date features a long player for the uncanny valley imprint, solo ep’s for d’julz’ bass culture, sweatshop and collaborative works for kontra musik alongside henrik johnsson amongst much more. this time round though we see alter return under his jor-el guise under which he first started releasing material on dj hell’s internation deejay gigolo imprint. up first is title-track ‘tilted reality’ laid out over seven minutes with a slowly unfolding dynamic feel, encompassing spiraling atmospherics, distorted rhythms and blooming stab- sequences. ‘elevation’ follows and takes a more direct groove-driven approach via straight four-four percussion and hooky bass chops, whilst tension building pads and fluttering dub echoes gradually build around the foundation. ‘solitude’ closes out the package deliving into deeper realms with soft ethereal dub chords, acid tinged leads and emotive strings.

brightons boutique house label black key recordskicks off 2017 with a fantastic ep from label newcomer cinthie. cinthie is a well established force in berlin: as well as being a resident at key spots ipse and humboldthain club-where she spins heady vinyl only sets-she runs three much loved labels and collectives in beste modus, unison wax and beste freunde. as such, she is a true leader of the underground house scene who also runs a studio complex in berlin, and so is very much at the heart of the house conversation. kicking things off is the excellent house rhythms , a rugged, bass driven, deep house cut with flabby drums and snares and icy hi hats all sounding informed by classic deep house greats like ron trent. warm, soul infused pads emanate from the core and the whole unhurried affair really sucks you in with its cosy and romantic atmosphere. the second splendid offering is liberty, a much rawerand direct cut designed for peak time sets. again it is riddled with jazzy chords that have real soul, but the drums are exposed and banging and the whole thing barrels along at a sweat inducing pace. this is a typically classy offering from both artist and label that kicks off 2017 in real style.

saine & smith consists of jaja saine and leo smith. two talented djs/producers from stockholm. both are diaspora kids - jaja saine s background is in west africa and leo s in barbados. so their debut release is a kind of heritage reflection, with twisted elements of decadent scandinavian dance music, which echoes generally in their sound. a. lord vanlig - inspired from afro-caribbean traditional folk music from the 60s. a melodramatic blend of cheer and sorrow. with capturing and repetitive drums combined with a compact kick and sweet overlay of melodious keys and child laughter. b. sir viktig – a deep house banger with haunting ghost like pads, catchy afrobeat samples and vocal snippets.

public release’s lucky thirteen and second release of 2017 is by another kindred spirit newcomer to the label, earth boys, a brooklyn-based duo that’s all dreamy keys, soft pads, peace frogs, throwback vibes, and deftly futuristic house rhythms, though not necessarily in that order. with trail mix, mike sherburn and julian duron have built four gloriously friendly, oddball house cuts— cheeky, choppy vocal samples juxtaposed against schmaltzy piano licks and punchy tribal rhythms rubbing against smooth bass figurations. their ironic sense of humor intersects with precisely crafted productions in a way that underscores both, making the ep a brilliant concoction of bouncy, energetic dance music that teases the genre as much as it revels in it. if that messes with your head, just shut down your left brain, drop the needle, take a big ol’ rip, and see where a microdose of earth boys will take you.

long time friends cesar merveille and ryan crosson return to visionquest to reignite their ‘merveille & crosson’ project in late may with three fresh, intricately programmed cuts. visionquest boss ryan crosson and parisian cesar merveille need no introductions, with the duo’s back catalogues featuring material on the likes of revered imprints cadenza, desolat, little helpers and mdrnty. 2011 welcomed the introduction of their ‘merveille & crosson’ project, with their debut album ‘drm’ on visionquest gaining plaudits from industry heavyweights including ricardo villalobos, and after a five years absence here we see the duo return once again to deliver ‘dream state’, a three track ep that oozes quality from the off. the a side is home to title cut ‘dream state’, a production that tumbles and twists smoothly around meandering synths, crisp percussion shots and a bumping low ends, typical of the duos free flowing and evolving production styles. on the flip, ‘guns’ sets to work through pitched down vocal loops, sweeping sonics and rich textures all reinforced by a driving bassline that carries plenty of groove, before ‘time contraints’ slowly unveils itself with a series of off-kilter gliches and pops, delicate pads and sophisticated sound arrangement, concluding yet another fluent and immersive offering from merveille & crosson, and an excellent addition to the visionquest catalogue.

it’s been a long time coming. after raygun, conscious mind, void vip, stolen desire and a host of other guest appearances over the years, it was about time spirit delivered his first full solo release and it has certainly been worth the wait!
‘international’ has already been causing some severe destruction in the hands of those dj’s fortunate enough to have early access. an unrelenting frenzy of thunderous bass, seesaw amen fills, cavernous reverberating drums and hypnotic pads spiralling towards it’s intense surging apex. creeping synths, stripped-down militant rhythms and stealth subs provide the perfect vision for the title track, ‘stalker’ before ‘look out’ completes the journey with a brooding bass overload, surrounded in huge atmospherics and mystical echoing vocals.

third chapter by homemadezucchero very own meze is a 4 dimension disengaged statement. wide ambiances wrap mental bass lines and saturated dynamics in a minimalistic melodics drama. tempered by icy harmonic pads and human shreds.

jacob long s work as earthen sea has already firmly established itself on itals lovers rock label, but here the san francisco-based artist is branching out to a sympathetic ear silent season. much like other artists on the label, long s fusion of heavy atmospherics and submerged techno make for a compelling, immersive listen. at times, such as on -the sky is a sea of darkness-, he opts for a looming set of pads and textures that bear down on the listener. elsewhere, more delicate sounds interact across the frequency range, but what binds the record together is the weight of the ambience long is so adept at crafting. without a thread of a kick drum pulse to be heard throughout, it s another strong step on for earthen sea.

hoel’s contribution to this disorientating piece of engineered sound sculpture, is imagined as a schizo-paranoid state of delirium. voices whisper over evolving modular phases of heavy, distorted nothingness. it is a full theatrical construction featuring a haunted choir conducted to sing in the producer’s own unique voice.
the second side features two tracks by label debutant simon marchesini. subtle, brooding almost-there beats reach from underneath, intertwining themselves with a rich sound carpet of complex poly-rythms and twisting vortex-like pads. marchesini seeks to push sound to the very limits of the spectrum.

d’marc cantu’s second release on drone is an introspective, emotive piece of electro. with it’s deep pads, ‘omega red’ provides the soundtrack to a trek through the snowy wastes, never letting up and calling through the night. dreaming of a world beyond our own on a journey without end, waking to find fragments of that world still holding on.

i ran the zoo is a lesson in stripped-back contrast and subtlety, with an acidic groove bleeping away over driving percussion and delicate atmospherics in the digital version, the tension growing with every thud of the kick drum.a dizzying breakdown raises the bar with snare rolls and dramatic pads, with the wide-open space therein soon sucked back into the void when the beat drops back in.
