anglo-cherokee-japanese skateboarder turned musician korey dane returns with his second album chamber girls. influenced by the likes of t.s. eliot, tom waits, karen dalton, the beatles and the stones, and more, chamber girls was recorded almost completely live at l.a.’s analog time capsule valentine recording studios, searing instinct and experience direct to tape. dane produced everything himself, too, except for a quick assist from legendary producer tony berg (x, public image ltd.) on one song, and he was inspired by the deceptively simple ethos he’d internalized while making youngblood: pursue greatness. “writing a song that you know someone might skip over later is sacrilege,” he says. instead, he wanted every song on chamber girls to feel not only live but alive, too, with that go-forbroke spirit that animates everything he says, does, or sings: “i’m writing all the time,” he says. “i’ve lived by a line a day sometimes. i try and stop when it’s good. if you try and simplify it down to its bare elements ... it’s truly a redemptive act.”

it is making my blood boil. man, my jaw is hanging down listening to this stuff. read the email from butthole surfers man and producer, paul leary, when he heard the demo for what would become the debut philipp gorbachev & the naked man album. philipp gorbachev, the russian musician and dj, has been throwing killer parties and making some of the most innovative and exciting electronic music to come out of moscow in years. in 2014 he released his debut album silver album but when invited to perform a live boiler room he had something else in mind: a band scenario. the resulting concoction was not something locked into a 4/4 beat but rather a much more organic, groove-based sound with funk-strutting bass lines and live drums that rolled and flurried around the beats that jumped around leading the charge of the songs along with gorbachev’s damo suzuki-like vocals. taking that experiment into the studio, i dont give a snare is a wild ride that jumps genres, switches paces and alters tones frequently. the opening goodman exploding in intense rhythms and heavy, spiralling riffs that at times recall sabbath but the ever-shifting drums and gargling electronics give a wonky freshness that feels impossible to place into genre. whilst gorbachev cites a range of influences from beck to blind willie johnson as being core to him, the primary motivation is the live nature of the project itself. the main influence is the constant live experience we have as music players and performers. i want to get the most out of every party, every jam, and every dancefloor.

public release’s lucky thirteen and second release of 2017 is by another kindred spirit newcomer to the label, earth boys, a brooklyn-based duo that’s all dreamy keys, soft pads, peace frogs, throwback vibes, and deftly futuristic house rhythms, though not necessarily in that order. with trail mix, mike sherburn and julian duron have built four gloriously friendly, oddball house cuts— cheeky, choppy vocal samples juxtaposed against schmaltzy piano licks and punchy tribal rhythms rubbing against smooth bass figurations. their ironic sense of humor intersects with precisely crafted productions in a way that underscores both, making the ep a brilliant concoction of bouncy, energetic dance music that teases the genre as much as it revels in it. if that messes with your head, just shut down your left brain, drop the needle, take a big ol’ rip, and see where a microdose of earth boys will take you.

long time friends cesar merveille and ryan crosson return to visionquest to reignite their ‘merveille & crosson’ project in late may with three fresh, intricately programmed cuts. visionquest boss ryan crosson and parisian cesar merveille need no introductions, with the duo’s back catalogues featuring material on the likes of revered imprints cadenza, desolat, little helpers and mdrnty. 2011 welcomed the introduction of their ‘merveille & crosson’ project, with their debut album ‘drm’ on visionquest gaining plaudits from industry heavyweights including ricardo villalobos, and after a five years absence here we see the duo return once again to deliver ‘dream state’, a three track ep that oozes quality from the off. the a side is home to title cut ‘dream state’, a production that tumbles and twists smoothly around meandering synths, crisp percussion shots and a bumping low ends, typical of the duos free flowing and evolving production styles. on the flip, ‘guns’ sets to work through pitched down vocal loops, sweeping sonics and rich textures all reinforced by a driving bassline that carries plenty of groove, before ‘time contraints’ slowly unveils itself with a series of off-kilter gliches and pops, delicate pads and sophisticated sound arrangement, concluding yet another fluent and immersive offering from merveille & crosson, and an excellent addition to the visionquest catalogue.

lost in time continues on it’s path exploring timeless underground house music with number 8 in the series. the ‘last step’ ep focuses on the extraordinary production talents of tuccillo, the italian musician widely regarded for his unblock studio. this record marks a deviation in direction for tuccillo, who is recently returning to his roots, making stripped down minimal dubs aimed directly at the dance floor. lostime008 includes four new cuts which can best be defined as ‘romanian’ style in essence. in fact raresh from a:rpia:r and livio & roby from premiesku are early supporters. the title track kicks things off with rolling percussion with more than a hint of latino attitude. dubby stabs and detroit style chords soon join the party and intricate changes in the drum programming keep subtly lifting the track throughout. ‘changed’ opts for a totally different tact, opening with lush, dreamy pads which evolve alongside rolling snare patterns and bass grooves to reveal a heavily harmonised spoken word vocal. on the flip side, ‘drum engine’ opens with feint, delayed vocal stabs which are joined by celestial, swirling pads, before being abruptly stripped away to reveal a menacing growling bass finally, ‘titled’, takes thing in a more minimal direction with airy pads and acid bleeps panning around the mix, showing off tuccillo s immense production talent
