few would challenge the claim that the 1960s and 70s have been the most fertile two decades in the history of popular music ever - a period which, regardless of genre, laid the foundations for everything that has followed. what is more, this period was so fertile that the speed with which tastes changed left a colossal amount of incredible music to gather dust - perhaps most famously a profusion of funk, soul and jazz. it was a musical legacy that lay mouldering until the rise of sampling in late 80s hip-hop precipitated a mad scramble for lost crates and suddenly, the music that became known as rare groove - for obvious reasons (it was rare and very groovy) - experienced a phoenix-like rebirth. a quarter of a century on and a million funk, soul, jazz-funk and rare groove compilations, re-presses and re-releases later, you d think that cupboard was bare and yet, even now, there are gems to be found. pt is re-releasing the rarest of cuts that often were originally only limited runs or private pressings and new compilation down & wired is just such a collection. always soulful, this features everything from mod groovers and northern stompers, to funky bumps and latin heaters. yet while the quality of all cuts is immediately apparent, only one of the eleven has ever been previously been compiled because when pt do rare, they don t mess around. in fact, if these tracks were steaks - they d still be walking around eating grass.

rain text is a new project by giovanni civitenga and giuseppe ielasi. this 4-track ep is the first in a series of records produced using each time a different and fairly limited bank of sounds. giovanni civitenga is a producer from rome, currently living and working in berlin. he has released albums under different monikers on various labels including brainfeeder and huntleys + palmers. in 2014 he started skyapnea, a label and series of broadcasts on nts radio. giuseppe ielasi grew up in the south of italy and now resides in the outskirts of milano. he mostly plays solo, but also in bellows (with nicola ratti) and in duos with enrico malatesta, kassel jaeger, andrew pekler. he has released (short) records on 12k, entr acte, senufo editions, dekorder, error broadcast and other labels and also produces music under the -inventing masks- moniker.

if you love contemporary minimal music, then you are certainly familiar with the greek artist stathis leontiadis. with his bands human puppets, exetix and plexiglas this musician became one of the stars of the genre. now he is back with doric. with this solo project he already released a single and an album on fabrika and a 10- on domestica. the new release is once again a 10-, this time on peripheral minimal. doric uses a special concept. the a-side is the so-called asleep side and is about loneliness: music that sounds paranoid. sleep of reason is almost unbearable, it s madness driven by minimal electronics. everything is very danceable, but this is the dance of madness. the minimal sound comes straight from the 80s. over my dreamssounds a bit like the early parade ground. simply great! head against the wall (a title that needs little explanation) is slow and compelling.

if we put armando, gene hunt and steve pointdexter together in a room with a few synthesizers, some rhythm boxes, a roland 606 and a few cans of beer, what we would get is shrimp traxx. this very young, practically unknown austrian artist has just made his recording debut on bons records with five tracks that range in style from classic to trippy, psychotic acid house. these five jam sessions, made 100% using hardware, are now appearing on the catalan label. after an ep with a markedly 90s house sound, bons records is now turning towards more ghetto vibes with a record to be spun and danced to exclusively in a house club. this is not warm-up stuff!

it is very difficult to present david duriez without writing an encyclopedic tome as its influence on the house music in france was decisive. since its inception in 1992, david released over a hundred records under his name, tens under various pseudonyms, mainly on vinyls on the most renowned labels like 2020vision, ovum, systematic, pokerflat, f communication, under the counter, stickman, crosstown rebels, the end, etc .. (the list is long, see discogs.com to be convinced) and as many remixes for some of the greatest artists (think moby, dj sneak, gemini, dj hell, llorca, telex, random factor, johnny fiasco, paul johnson, jori hulkkonen, ralph lawson, random factor, kenny hawkes or mr.c). founder of the label brique rouge and a whole galaxy of other labels, he participated in the creation of internationally recognized labels such as robsoul with phil weeks, freak n chic with dan ghenacia (from apollonia) or rz muzik. at a time when david had federated online the cream of the house producers via a forum (far and long before social networks), ivan smagghe had nicknamed him -the producer of the producers.- , a true house music activist, but most of all david duriez is a devastating dancefloor dj, he did several tours around the world and played in some of the biggest clubs in the world between 1995 and 2010. truly one of the most important players in the french electro scene, david is back on tracks after a few years hyatus. but don t call it a comeback because he has never really gone awol, he has been watching the scene and now he s back in the studio. you can expect a (very) long serie of releases for 2016, you have been warned!

desolat label boss loco dice is back with what is sure to be a massive autumn package: he has remixed the seminal dance track �go� by the legendary moby, twice, and has made it all his own in the process. moby needs little introduction: the american dance producer and live performer�s albums are classics of the genre that are celebrated far and wide. they have been used on thousands of adverts, have given rise to hit singles all over the world and have made him one of the most celebrated electronic music stars of our time. his �go� track was what started it all for him back in the 90�s, and was a bona fide club classic of the day. it still resonates today and always gets crowds going. now it has been remixed twice by loco dice, who has added his own stamp to it in distinctive fashion. his first excellent version is eight minutes of chunky and tribal drums, with rubber kicks, clipped horn stabs and big hits all building the pressure. those most famous vocal cries really finish it off in style, and ensure that dance floors will go wild whenever it is dropped, as do wonky synths and big piano chords at the breakdown. the second version is more emotive, with big sweeping strings smeared in the background to help make it all the more dramatic, teary eyed and impactful on the floor. this one is for the peak time in any set and is sure to make the most memorable moment of any night. both remixes here pack a real punch, and whilst remaining true to the original, they both sound just like you would expect from modern dance heavyweight loco dice.

finish techno pioneer and dum records boss kimmo rapatti aka mono junk and melody boy 2000 is back with another fine ep of some of his greatest tracks. all three have been released before now, but never all together on the same ep. a1 sound stealer was released in 2007 under the melody boy 200 alias and since then has been hugely sought after, often fetching high prices on discogs. it is a high impact techno track with racing drums and chattery percussion that will take any floor by storm. a2 all alone, again as melody boy 2000, has only been released on cd before now, as part of a label compilation back in 2002. this one is deep and rubbery, spaced out and elastic and is full of moodiness and melody. both b-side tracks were written as mono junk and both were written in 1992. first up, apache acid came on vinyl own music man and is a face melting, hundred miler per hour banger with manic 303s buried within. finally, �beyond the darkness� was a key early techno track to come from finland and has previously been released on dum010. says the artist of the track, �an ensoniq asr-10 arrived on the market and studio engineer perttu bought it right away, but i never liked to use sounds that someone else had made. we sampled the track�s bassline, strings and others from my jx-3p separately and mixed it all together.� the result is an atmospheric track with swirling pads, icy synths and form drums that will make people march, no doubt.

fuckthegovernment.ltd, a.k.a. f.t.g (alfredo trastulli) and music box head honcho, marco riff, return to the skylax fold in 2016 with a cache of house nuggets for our listening pleasure. their last venture on skylax saw f.t.g collaborate with a bunch of his friends, resulting in some of the best tracks we�d heard all year, including the unforgettable fuckthegovernment theme. their tracks have been celebrated and hailed by some of the best djs in the game, names such as derrick may, ricardo villalobos, raresh, and dj harvey. the bar set by the first record remains sky high, and somehow, these two manage to raise the bar even higher. it may be the biggest cliche going when talking about an album, but the duo certainly do take us on a journey, through the past and present of house music. it�s a record not too dissimilar in tone to paranoid london�s from a few years back, but f.t.g and marco strip things back even further than those guys did, in our opinion, the sound is more raw with less frills, and no track names to predispose feelings in the listener either. this eight track project is cohesive and elaborate, with movements through sounds both acid and jazzy, minimal and maximal. it explores sounds that came to prominence in famous house locales such as detroit and chicago over in the u.s., but the underground european influence is definitely present, from paris to berlin, and of course f.t.g and marco�s home of italy. with this album, these guys add to the underground sound that has cultivated in the city of perugia for years now, a place that has seen the likes of simoncino and nicholas hone their craft.don�t miss out on a piece of skylax history

following on from march s shlømo remix package featuring donato dozzy, bambounou, shlømo and label boss kennedy smith, bright sound s second release of 2016 will new a brand new ep from sweden s andreas tilliander. with his releases on his own repeatle imprint and his tm404 alias s hardware-driven techno featuring on skudge white and kontra-musik, tilliander is among sweden s most versatile talents working right now. his arrival on bright sounds is of a piece with bsrx 004, last year s reissue of fellow swede henrik johansson s 1997 ep as smyglyssna. as with johansson s record, tilliander s stettin libau ep explores slower tempo techno, locating the moments of space and energy in between its rhythmic structures. this search is most keenly observed in knapp ledsyn , with its ever-shifting sonic landscape melting away at various points to reveal its unusual, skeletal beats and hidden melodic details, while the ep title track and nybliven lots apply that approach to what might at first be a traditional dub techno template, yet still offering further small moments of off-beat character. completing the release is a detox operation remix of knapp ledsyn from nonplace records chief burnt friedman, in which the german veteran strips things down to a gentle patter of drums overlaid with suggestive flashes of the original s rich atmospheric elements.

early september will see jorge savoretti release his river plate ep via visionquests special edition imprint, comprising three original compositions from the argentinian artist. having been involved in electronic music as a dj for over two decades now jorge savoretti is firmly cemented as one of the argentinas finest electronic music exports, starting from his humble beginnings in rosario he has gone on to release material with esperanza, claque musique and igloo-rec as well as touring the globe throughout. here we see jorge mark his debut for the visionquest special edition imprint with a new three tracker and taking the lead is title track river plate, radiantly showcasing savorettis dub-infused percussive led style with choppy swinging drums, ethereal pad swells a snaking sub groove and dub chords which ebb and flow throughout. following is parana high which takes a more refined, low-slung approach via soft chord flutters, bright stab sequences and bumpy sub hits while a shuffled percussive drive further fuels the groove. last up to complete the package is u-fonk which delves into darker territories with mind- bending glitch synths, robust rhythms and a vacillating bass lead running throughout its six minute duration.
