when looking for music to be released on magazine, our guideline has always been energy. the key question remains the same: does the artist have something important to say? does it have a sense of urgency? alex played us these tracks while visiting the magazine studio in cologne earlier this year and we were consumed by unadulterated rage. this is anything but a conceptual release, alex has not released this kind of music before. a side of alex manifests itself through these techno tracks, that most might not have known before. brutal yet beautiful, furious yet fragile. a berlin native who shaped his sense for techno by striving through his hometown and its infamous raves, alex is now one of the prominent protagonists of that scene – not only when regularly playing at berghain. the ep harnesses this experience perfectly, fully preserving the energy of the creation process by recording directly to tape. most productions may have suffered from this primitive method of locking sound into position, but not these tracks from a techno master.

a new adepth audio record featuring canadian rennie foster, including a remix of nomadico (dj dex/underground resistance). the title track witch hazel is a 9 minute long track with no breakdown and a minimal approach to arrangement, with organic elements cycling in and out subtly rather than obviously beginning and ending. a rolling half time, tribal groove drives the power of the track with a haunting vocal sample and layers of percussion creating a heady, polyrhythmic hypnosis on the dance floor. not since rennie s well known devil s water has he presented such an overtly occult offering as this extremely finely crafted ep, and this song represents the initial seduction of the record to the listener very effectively. the second track, navigator, is a drum machine driven workout, again with a polyrhythmic and tribal vibe, this time drenched in a rich, holographic pad that morphs and moves in unexpected ways. minimalistic in presentation, this track is bass heavy and functional for the dj, yet artistic and emotional. the nomadico remix by dj dex of underground resistance takes the elements of witch hazel and re-constructs them in a futuristic style with a more driving kick and molten detroit attitude. a heavier techno approach to the piece, but still intact is the melancholic atmosphere of the original and siren song of the vocal sample. this mix includes a dramatic breakdown and unique arrangement familiar to fans of nomadico s awesome yaxteq label. the last track on the ep is called crossing the boundary is possibly the only track in this style to sample distorted vocals usually associated with black metal, making this a very unique, perhaps polarizing, experiment in sound. evocative of the desolation of deep space and suggestive of sonic dark matter. this track combines rennie s singular approach to dub techno with ambient and drone music and the result is like nothing else currently in existence.

from the heart of macedonia comes herzel with his first ep for uncanny valley. the four tracks point him out as an expert for creating tracks on the blurred line between rave and darkness. if you are listening on a proper sound system, it is almost impossible not to be moved by the mighty drones of forms that almost feel like tectonic shifts. glide runs in similar veines and brings power to the dance floor with rolling bass synths and sublime pads. a little more straightforward is glowworms with sharp drums and an acidic synth theme only to finally merge into an elegiac climax. finally, two hits hard with slapping synths and a dubby bass line, a gripping yet somehow nasty track.

harlems legendary disco label queen constance has long been a cult favourite among fans of underground dance music for decades. one of many labels operating under the equally legendary p&p family of imprints land of hits was operated by one peter brown, a truly colossal figure in nycs music scene, its catalogue still fascinates music lovers to this day. covering a wide range of styles including gospel, early rap and disco the label s output continually finds it way into the playlists of respected dj s and selectors across the globe. mistafide s colossal old-school rap behemoth equidity funk has long been a record that makes the serious collectors salivate and is now here in full 12inch form repress, too legit to quit. not much is known about the crew behind mistafide , their government names are listed online but this is the only record they put out using this name. suffice to say, this has no impact on the fury and style with which the mc s deliver their raps, backed with the studio nous of impresario peter brown. across 12 minutes equdity funk is a slamming disco-rap monster, interpolating elements of the evergreen b-boy jam theme from swat it sounds like everyone just got into the studio and went for it. in the style of the times this is the real hip-hop flavour, a live band, some mc s and some death defying bars being dropped, proper old school. a truly rare recording, equidity funk has been one of those records fans of the disco-rap era have been fiending for for decades - often commanding prices over the $1000 mark you can now grab this slice of essential nyc street funk.

italian producer morkebla presents his new “inner maze walkthrough” ep on fuselab. drippy rhythms, haunted industrial touch, subtly discomforting though balanced textures - a good blend of ambient electronica and nowadays meta divings into one’s mind corners. there is also a collaboration with infinity frequencies and a remix by perfume advert on a 12” with printed cover by theresa baumgartner.

for russian electronic music, mikhail chekalin is not only a major character, who has affected the scene’s establishment and development, but also a kind of symbolic figure. his music has been praised by many in the west - from journalists and critics of all kinds to frank zappa and karlheinz stockhausen, while in moscow chekalin’s name was excluded from the official cultural agenda for a long time: he was accused of propaganda of foreign pro-western aesthetics and up until the end of the 80’s wasn’t allowed to release his works or travel abroad. this, however, didn’t interfere with him recording dozens of innovative electronic compositions and contributing greatly to the development of unofficial soviet art in general - for example, providing sound design for the famous exhibitions of twenty moscow artists on malaya gruzinskaya or arranging the first audiovisual performances on a specially constructed light organ.
however, just like all great artists, mikhail himself prefers to focus not on personal achievements, but on creativity. i don’t have a biography - only a discography - this quote of the author may become an entry point of sorts into the compilation presented. this archival collection of works recorded within the period from 1978 to 1987 are chekalin’s multigenre experiments ranging from spatial music (in essence, ambient’s precursor) to more contemporary synthesizer and post-symphonic compositions.

killer smile is an independent multi-genre record label, created by uk-based producer john morrow (foul play, 4 horsemen of the apocalypse, johnny halo, skeleton army) and lifelong friend and electronic music veteran darran juzyk. the first release on label killer smile comes from its founder and ex foul play member john morrow aka skeleton army. the -catchy schisms ep- features four eclectic tracks firmly rooted in leftfield territory. vague pads, swarming electronics, deep bass tones and off kilter drum tracks mark a distinct change in style from previous house based skeleton army releases. this is john back in experimental mode, not afraid to take a few risks and avoiding traditional dance floor constraints.

el deux is the swiss electro-pop trio of gutze gautschi (guitar, vocals), steno onetz (bass), martin kraft (vocals, drum machine). formed circa 1981 in aarau by gutze and steno who played together in punk/new wave band fresh color aka frische farbe featuring a pre-yello dieter meier. gutze?s minimal electronic compositions did not fit the concept of fresh color, so they formed a new project with their live mixer, martin kraft, on vocals.

the debut ep from dj force & the evolution is a classic. not only was this ep the starting point to a run of huge releases by the group, including perfect dreams and high on life, it was also the beginning for darren styles as part of the evolution, and dj force, both of whom teamed up to bring the rave world numerous classics as years went by. but this ep was the beginning, and has long deserved a repress. the original pressing is changing hands for ridiculous amounts second hand, and this is the same three tracks, lovingly remastered and presented in their original format!

nachdem er sich mit sir coxsone, dem legendären chef des kingstoner labels studio one, zerstritten hatte, gründete lee perry zuerst seine eigene band und dann, 1973, im hinterhof ein eigenes studio. was aus der not geboren wurde, entwickelte sich zu einer einzigartigen erfolgsgeschichte. sowohl mit den upsetters als auch dem black ark schrieb perry musikgeschichte, insbesondere durch das 1976 veröffentlichte -super ape--album, auf dem er gewissermaßen das genre dub auf unbekannte weise aus dem mischpult brodeln ließ. für perry ist das studio wie ein lebewesen. ob er es wirklich so empfindet, oder einfach nur zu viel ganja in rauch aufgehen lässt, aber bei perry ist das equipment organisch, empathisch und intelligent. der clou: so hören sich die resultate auch an! lange bevor man das sampling erfunden hatte, schichtete er tonspuren aus tiefen bässen, echos und hall mit diversen, selbst aufgenommenen, gerne rückwärts laufenden klangsequenzen auf-, in- und übereinander. heißt: perry war der erste produzent, der anstatt der band die musik machte. das brachte ihm unter anderem den titel salvador dalí des dub ein. dass der Über-80-jährige bis heute nichts von seiner experimentierfreude verloren hat, zeigt der mit dem new yorker subatomic sound system besorgte re-edit seines meilensteins.

on the flip things get even stronger with the proto-house banger “girl like you” a sick soulful number with with a biggest swinging kick drum i have ever heard, both proper club material.

one of the most coveted unreleased low rider / soul ballads. a huge tune, up there with darling dears (google that shit). only released on a japanese compilation 20 odd years ago without the bands consent (and with some of the channels missing) we bring you the full unreleased version for the first time. this is a big one for people who know the score.
if that’s not enough, we found this rather good unreleased disco gospel number on the master tapes of their private press lp sessions (also coming soon) but we had to give the ballad to the a side, roll the windows down and blast it.

verdant recordings continues its quest to provide a space for lesser-known artists exploring the deepest pockets of electronic music, not least around the 4/4 axis. next up on the label is the first public appearance from interjection, a london-based artist who has been cooking up an immersive sound for some time. her blissful solitude is a smoky deep house cut that drifts through heavy clouds of pads, while common places drops some brittle electro rhythms into the mix without lifting the veil of ambience. radiating soul has an equally intricate set of rhythms at work, with extra notes of 303 sprinkled over the top, and her nocturnal note finishes the ep off with a shimmering trip out to complement the a1.

border-breaking album by international collective featured shawn lee - london based american producer/composer/musician - and the soul surfers - heaviest russian soul/psych funk band. the result is boundless soul and psychedelic funk music from the future. deep in raw grit and musical exploration. this album crosses both: genre, age and world politics. it proves that music is truly the international language and it’s not where you’re from, but where you’re at.

the legendary gig that joe strummer, singer from the punk rock band “the clash” attended and inspired his writing their classic ‘white man in hammersmith palais’ took place on the 05th june 1977. at the hammersmith palais venue on shepherd’s bush road w6, london during the height of punk mania. the full line up for the show were all jamaican artists dillinger, leroy smart, delroy wilson (all the first time from jamaica) and ken boothe. “ken boothe for uk pop reggae” who had already scored some hits with ‘everything i own’ and ‘crying over you’ in 1974. joe strummer was expecting roots, rock, reggae but the sound system this evening ‘admiral ken sound’ was playing ‘four tops all night’ as in soul and northern soul that were staple crowd pleasers at the time to warm up the audience, but in joe’s eyes the music should have reflected more jamaican roots based music. the song also deals with bigger issues of black and white unity, but some people including the punk rockers. “they’re all too busy fighting, for a good place under the lighting”. joe strummer himself was looking for fun. “i’m the whiteman in the palais... just looking for fun”.
