experienced crate diggers are no doubt familiar with new birth, the 17-piece funk ensemble sampled on classic hip-hop records by wu-tang clan, de la soul, junior m.a.f.i.a., black sheep, lil wayne, ice cube, and many more. the genesis of new birth can be traced back to the nite-liters, a louisville-based instrumental outfit. founded in 1963 by motown songwriter/producer harvey fuqua and saxophonist tony churchill, the nite-liters released a handful of albums in the early 70s, scoring a few minor hits and perfecting the sound that would power new birth to further success as the decade progressed. while much of the the nite liters’ early material has been overlooked, their self-titled debut album is worth revisiting. originally released on rca records in 1970, the nite liters is a raw, soulful masterpiece that has been sampled by kmd, ghostface killah and others.

(lena platonos) is a greek musician, pianist and music composer. one of the pioneers of greek electronic music, she remains active today. lena was born in heraklion, crete, and grew up in athens. she began learning how to play the piano at the age of two and became a professional pianist before turning eighteen. soon afterwards, she received a scholarship to study in the the berlin and vienna academies , where she was exposed to jazz, rock and middle eastern music. she returned to greece in the late 70s and began working with the hellenic broadcasting corporation.

doktu rhute muuzic (formerly roy hytower) has enjoyed a full career from his late teens to this present day, a career that spans over 50 years. his first experiences were singing around mobile, alabama. in 1962 he came to chicago, replacing mighty joe young as rhythm guitarist for otis rush. often adopting a soul-slanted sound, hytower cut a handful of 45rpm singles in the 1960s and 70s for several local labels such as avin, expo, brainstorm, and jiffy. in june 2016 his tune “song of deliverance” was featured on tramp’s “peace chant- compilation. in recent years roy hytower has self-released a couple of cds, however under his new moniker, doktu rhute muuzic. “i’m in your corner” and “tip jar” were released on two different cd albums. this is the only chance to get these two wonderful tunes on vinyl. don’t miss it!

washington, dc native joe quarterman had his first hit in 1973, an instant funk classic that was part of the capital city’s red hot 70s funk scene. “so much trouble on my mind” is a party rocking anthem still being sampled and played over 40 years later. fort knox five recently got quarterman back in the studio to record a new song, the stripped down funk banger “don’t go”.

celldöd, aka anders karlsson, has been releasing dirty electronic music since the late 80s, both small-run cassette tapes inspired by the diy ethos of his post-punk background, and pristine vinyl editions. karlsson s music is uncompromising and edgy, with roots in both early electronic and 70s industrial music from britain, as well as us techno and kraut-inspired german electronics. prior to releasing records under the name celldöd, he released music as the pain machinery (ebm), human experiment (industrial), preset (industrial/breakcore), and hbt (proto-techno/industrial) among others — all unified by an omnipresent diy-punk attitude.

oddball space disco tracks compiled from library tracks composed between 1975 and 1978. big tip!! from the early 70s to the mid-80s, this self-taught musician composed about twenty albums of production and library music with generic cover art and titles (out of the way, magical ring, keys of the future, pulsations, more and more, etc.) that evoke interstellar travel. these experimental discs, made with love, humility and rudimentary means, had no ambition other than to accompany other peoples images. by exhuming these obscurities from the dustbin of history, born bad have decided otherwise. archaeologists with an agenda, they seek to give jean pierre decerf the renown he deserves: that of an innovator whose rhythmic, synthetic compositions inspired the harbingers of the french touch (air comes to mind), not to mention some east coast rappers.

peter michael hamel emerged from the 70s krautrock scene dreaming of “the blue flower growing between the milestones on the road to a future world-music”. a truly visionary artist who worked and studied with john cage, morton feldman and terry riley, his 1980 colours of time lp - an epic, sprawling, 22-minute saga - was hailed by the guardian’s rob fitzpatrick as “an absolute masterpiece of skull-bursting, synth-led ambient minimalism”. thirty six years on, astral industries reinterpret hamel s original vision with remixes from two contemporary heavyweights - wolfgang voigt and rod modell (aka deepchord). each expansive interpretation invites you to step outside of reality and into an alternative imagination of hamel s future world, spiralling into the colours and slowly out of time itself. original artwork by theo ellsworth and a massive thanks to peter michael hamel & eckart rahn.

the nine-piece uk-based reggae unit enjoyed a measure of success in the latter half of the 70s. here s the debut album book of revelation from 1978, re-issued in the original artwork and 180 gram heavy weight vinyl, all re-mastered music and additonal leaflet with liner notes. the longplayer was recorded and mixed by the legendary mark angelo lusardi who worked also with dennis bovell, creation rebel, prince far i, public image limited, and who developed later an outboard eq / filtering device called the mutator, used by numerous recording artists including massive attack, radiohead and daft punk.

amin peck is an electronic studio project, contaminated by the new wave from u.k. like most ’80s electronic bands. amin-peck walked a fine line between disco and minimal wave throughout the course of the early 1980s, oftentimes incorporating shameless pop melodies and avant-garde leanings. amin peck were an italian band leaded by giorgio fioroni (aka george fyron, arrangements, production, vocals) with leonard parker (arrangments, keyboards) and max marne (production). incredible but true, amin peck started as hard rock guitar band in the 70s... and becoming one of the best examples of italo disco. this limited edition it contains full-length versions plus uncut audio material (a2) tracked down during tape restoration. craig peyton was a mainstay in nyc jazz and dance music beginning in the 70s. from playing on dan hartmans -vertigo/relight my fire- to his work on boogie funk productions with daryl payne, he is one of the unsung heroes of the era where disco transitioned into house music. his drum machine and synth based cover of william devaughans -just be thankful- came out on profile records in 1983, a daring move for a white man trained on the vibes. he gives the jam a haunting and funky rework that has only escalated in popularity over the years. it has been bootlegged extensively while original copies remain quite elusive.

cold colors was born in bordeaux, france, in the mid 70s. his passion for music, particularly new wave and melancholic atmospheres, started early and strongly influenced his own creations years later. the first records he ever bought were the cure, depeche mode and soft cell. in the 90s, frederick bought his first guitar and composed songs under the name agent orange. in 2002, the cold colors project was born, with a release on the excellent lux records, as well as many live performances. fred loves working with machines. his music mixes warmth and melancholia, an obvious homage to cold wave and new wave, by blending todays electronic music with the melodic sounds of yesterday.

theyre young and tough, and especially wonderful too, easily one of the most compelling harmony soul groups to ever hail from the windy city! the sets a chicago soul gem from the early 70s, recorded with a laidback, slightly tripped-out vibe thats different than the tighter styles of other groups from the same scene, definitely righteous at points, with some of the superbad modes you might hear from an east coast lineup like the delfonics or soul generation, especially when they were trying to get a bit more conscious in their message. arrangements are great – handled by tom tom washington, eugene record, and cliff davis, very much at the best brunswick mode, but again with a deeper sort of vibe too. the title cuts a monster, and a very fitting follow-up to their earlier sly, slick, & wicked track – and the album features 2 versions (vocal and instrumental) of a cut called this is the lost generation, a very righteous soul groove with a heavy production tip.
