it s time again for us to welcome another first timer to the second state roster: rocko garoni. having been label manager of sisyphon, in-house imprint of the acclaimed sisyphos club in berlin, garoni is no stranger to curating high quality records, and this time he gets to be curator of his own stunning detection ep. jumping in head first, detection , mischievous number that is equal parts vicious and cunning as it is sensual and inviting. provocative female whispers float over a beat sure to slay any crowd, any time. switching gears, garoni heads into houser territories on phaseful , where glimmers of classic house artifacts are scattered like flickering shimmers over an energetic drum illustration. coming up next is tragedy . it s low slung drums, vast spanning bass and sinister vocal declarations make it an ideal ambassador for the dark mysterious nights. wrapping up the ep is a huge rework of detection by regal, who churns out a burner by cranking up the tempo and tension with crisp drums and an undeniable classic rave leads sure to make the forefathers of techno proud. if it keeps up like this, we expect much more big things in the future from rocko garoni!

“kissing to be clever” is the debut album by culture club. originally released in 1982, it immediately put the band on the musical map. turning the flamboyant boy george into a star, the soulful pop outing incorporated elements of pop, rock, new wave, dance and caribbean rhythms and sprouted several international hit songs.
“do you really want to hurt me” hit the #1 spot in several countries and turned out to be a song that resonates to this day with its universal feel of heart ache. all in all, this set is a highlight of 80s pop music, that set the stage for one of the decade’s most loved and oft-remembered bands.

xixa balance ep (apa002) abstract places audio elusive producer xixa delivers the second abstract places audio release. balance is a three-track ep where the co-founder of the label packs a solid techno sound drowned in complex and evolving atmospheres. as first label’s release (clip - gebre, 2016), this is not a 100% club record, we can hear ambient and idm influences, but a1 and b1 are perfect tracks to keep a techno set full of rhythm and tension, and will get its place on any dj record bag. a1 balance is built around a distorted but controlled techno beat. patiently, a wide palette of drones and other-worldly artefacts are growing next to carefully crafted percussive sounds. 1984 opens the b side of the 12”, with a 4 to the floor overdriven bass drum and a reverse reverb announcing its main synth sequence, accompanied by organic hi-hats and clap sounds. a collection of ethereal drones and noises is also used, giving the track a sense of cohesion and gluing its different parts. life inside a snow ball is xixa s personal take on ambient. some of the drones and artefacts from a1 are now mixed with new quasi- harmonic emotional textures and subtle noises emerging from a deep unknown space and forming a complete new sonic experience. balance ep is a very solid second release by abstract places audio that confirms the label sound and philosophy.

though quality techno is regularly associated with the colder climates of berlin and detroit, the recent developments happening on the iberian peninsula have been hard to ignore. one of the region’s more interesting and consistent producers in this decade has been maceo plex, owner of the ellum audio label. armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of signature club sounds, and with an ability to investigate ‘darker’ side of modern life (a tendency that can be heard especially well on past plex-produced tracks like “conjure balearia”), plex has located the “goldilocks zone” between funk liberation and mechanical control. mastering this balancing act is a skill that separates the best producers from the legions of also-rans: it shines through in his back catalog and is back in full force for his new “tesseract” ep on ellum.

the time has come again to welcome two new faces to the second state gang. introducing two of russia’s biggest exports and house elite, julia govor and tripmastaz. between julia govor’s recent meteoric rise and tmz s (the fresh alias for the more techno leaning output of tripmastaz) long discography of avant-garde clubland hits, the pairing of the two are a match made in heaven. over the course of three tracks the pair craft an expertly woven tapestry of hefty sonics resulting in their debut collaboration, ‘the probability’ ep. from the start, the aptly titled ‘1-’ kicks off with an enormous breakbeat kick and distant reverb heavy percussion forging a shimmering atmosphere as energetic hi-hats and swirling tones crescendo into a deep yet celestial fervor. ‘plus two’ sees the pair spawn their heaviest tune of the bunch as rolling low end and trippy, churning synths give way to a barrage of energetic claps and racing ride cymbals sure to make any dancefloor explode. wrapping up the ep is ‘equals tree’ where ethereal tones and flickers of delicate acoustics defy a monotonous yet robust groove culminating in a beautiful display of opposing forces. we couldn’t be happier with the outcome of this stunning ep and we know you will revel in it for a long time to come

kiki gyan’s star didn’t burn long, but it burned bright. drafted into the afro funk super group, osibisa, at 15, he was millionaire by 18 and regarded as one of the best keyboardists in the world by 21. ‘life was good, man,’ he told journalist kweku sakyi-addo. ‘too good!’. in 1983 he dived head first into the new york party scene. he took a lot of drugs, spent a lot of time in clubs and got together a team of crack local musicians to record feelin’ alright, his third and final solo album. all the kiki gyan trademark elements are present and correct. the album is unique a blend of highlife music with electronic funk and disco. ‘rosemary’ follows the formula most closely and was a hit across nigeria and ghana. but on ‘give it to me’, ‘love to love you’ and the title track, you’ll hear a slicker, boogie-influenced sound that has made feelin’ alright one of his most sought-after albums. kiki gyan would never hit such heights again. his addictions eventually took hold and he died aged 47, destitute and alone. feelin’ alright remains one of the brightest stars in his extraordinary constellation.

next release mmaudio, this time with the label’s founders drafted and unthone for an exclusive exit in split, including the remixes respectively of tadeo and andrea. drafted in more sustained and steady speed flow in ethereal gates, with regular ascents and descents, tadeo here has worked on a remix dedicated to club, direct and with sci-fi style, with a drum percussion, clean and always effective. while unthone with fleeting moments embodies the idea of ambient, dark and dub, with influences from deep in the remix the same, andrea focuses track in break style, including grooving incisive and very present.

aesthete obfuscation (computer club) computer club presents aesthete (aka thom barnett) with his debut release obfuscation. a 4 track ep of bass-heavy minimalism. micro-precise percussion bursting through minimal electronics with chattering industrial machines, the 4 tracks take an experimental approach directly to the dance floor. we first encountered the unique aesthete sound in a dark former ballroom in sheffield in early 2016 and were mesmerised by his sonic assault. as the name suggests, barnett s skill isn t confined to audio. a talented designer, he runs mamnick, an internationally renowned brand sold online and via outlets including a flagship store in tokyo. mamnick clothes and items blend sheffield craftsmanship with a love of cycling and a sharp aesthetic eye. everything barnett turns his attention to is expertly crafted and this debut ep on computer club is no exception.

nous klaer closes the year 2016 with a single sided release by mattheis. it s his first new music since kindred phenomena, and his most uptempo club music yet.

having been rivals on the football pitch as teenagers, a chance encounter many years later - djing at an international windsurfing festival - cumulated in a back to back set that kicked off the italia90 collaboration. putting the footballing differences aside, italia90 grew out of a shared love of quality house music that was influenced greatly by glasgow s close relationship with chicago and institutions such as the sub club that brought these house heroes close to home.

the 20th edition of the gynoid ltd series sees coeter, ixel and jeff rushin join forces to bring the heat. on the a side coeter delivers two club certainties by way of static and rain . on the flip ixel remixes rain taking it deeper into the morning, whilst jeff rushin remixes title track static into an industrial tinged stomper.

nous klaer welcomes cosime, a collaborative project between longtime companions arif and job. their debut ep consists of three tracks, including an outstanding version of the a1. most of the record was recorded and arranged on several autumn days, home away from home, facing a freshwater lake. field recordings, made on a former island that is now a peninsula, provide the basis of the hilary ep. on the b side the recordings lay over solid drum programming, centred on the offbeat hat. on the a side fyr offers a more fluid take, resulting in a splendid play of samples and rhythms sewn together. the alternative take of fyr takes on an anything-goes approach, highly club appropriate though moving away from the rhythm backbone. excellent music for pedaloes.

some more homegrown beats from elvis cassetta on morris audio! after his huge tune humney (morris audio 94), mr. cassetta is ready with another fine ep called longstreet claps. the title track is a deep and upbuilding house tune with cool vocals and a sexy bassline and shows elvis more subtle side of house. more of that please! the remix courtesy of up and coming london/leeds duo jammhot (madtech, roots of bloom, morris audio) taking a more stripped down approach, but as sexy as the original version. the b-side offers two straight club cuts, elvis cassetta style! and yes, elvis is his real name! enjoy!

morris audio has always been introducing new artists and we keep doing this. it is up to brame tiarnan mc morrow to his parents this time and yes, his debut release soul city ep is a hot piece of house music. *cant say much more* is brame in full effect with some catchy deep house with the splendid vocals of yemi, *soul city* is a stripped down club tool and *set you free* is deeeeeep and magic.
