als ende 1984 die ersten white labels durch die hände deutscher, britischer, amerikanischer und kanadischer djs gingen, war niemand auf das vorbereitet, was kommen würde. anfang 1985 kam es dann offiziell auf den markt und die szene war nie mehr dieselbe. das war der moment, in dem mike mareen den durchbruch schaffte. ja, er arbeitete schon seit den 70er jahren mit chris evans-ironside zusammen, aber nichts deutete darauf hin, dass sie gemeinsam etwas so futuristisches schaffen würden. „dancing in the dark” klang, als wäre es durch ein wurmloch gerutscht: melancholische, hypnotische vocals, eingehüllt in vocoder-nebel, getragen von einem arrangement, das so messerscharf war, dass es die meisten veröffentlichungen dieser zeit prähistorisch erscheinen ließ.

late nite tuff guy is a new breed of disco vigilante, prowling the neon streets on a mission from god / david mancuso to reclaim the clubs and fuck shit up. the scandalous alter-ego of genuine techno legend hmc (known to his momma as cam bianchetti), late nite tuff guy (lntg) puts the acrimony in acronym, the oh in disco, the amp in camp and the dang in dangerous. his shit is controversial, but it doesnt stink.

folamour represents the present and future sounds of the disco/house hybrid, staying true to the glitterbox sonic philosophy. his tracks share the same production values as the timeless records from classic disco imprints in the late 70s, melodies are super-tightly harmonised, instrumentation is lively and the rhythms are designed purely for dance. ‘the power and the blessing of unity’ is almost a mini album, exploring all the facets of folamour’s sophisticated house and disco tendencies. the title track sparkles with brass stabs and a textbook swinging disco beat, ‘island of recent father’ breaks things down into synthy house goodness, ‘let’s grab some smokes’ channels a more contemporary low-fi sound and bringing it home with ‘home beyond the clouds’, folamour closes with uplifting house hooks and percussion. it’s a real trip.
