it’s the forgotten place. lying between the mountains of northwest tunisia and the algerian border, the bargou valley and the village named after it lie isolated, away from the world. it’s poor, barren country, but standing apart, bargou has developed its own culture that had never been documented until nidhal yahyaoui began the task. born in the valley, he grew up hearing his parents and family sing the songs that belong to the region, and he was determined that the music and traditions shouldn’t slip away into obscurity. with targ, the album he’s made with his band bargou 08, yahyaoui has perfectly fused the past and the present to place bargou on the map.

born in sidi bel abbess, algeria, now living in istanbul, el mahdy jr. is a rising voice in sample based global electronic music. his sonic experiments have grown into a collection of disciplined, well timed musical gestures that confound the expectations of any single genre. splicing devotional music into a blunted blend of half time bass and mystic sound. familiar in its bass weight and its global melt, but completely new and enveloping in its fragility and poise.

the acid arabic wind has not finished blowing. after the warm welcome of our collections ep01, versatile proudly present four new tracks for eclectic and demanding dance rooms. once again, guido, hervé and sex schön from acid arab deliver one track and have asked producers from all over the world to contribute to the project. as you can see, some of the best musicians of our era have answered positively.

the ep opens with >hypnotic bass<, a track with a very groovy gnaoua rythm. the sound of the guembri gives the production a very warm sensation. next up is >deep medina<, the title track. a real journey, the vocals are strong while sidi mohammeds lute elicits shivers. the melody manages to sound traditional while modern at the same time. >for hou!!!<, the closing track, philip bader perfectly works the acoustic samples, resulting in a characteristically berlin minimal sound. the kick and the bass are very heavy.

with many influences, the musicians of la mano create a peculiar sound, a rock-salsa-ra•-reggae-rap cocktail which they baptize patchanka. manu chao, who writes lyrics, gives to the patchanka a more personal definition: a popular dance with apache lyrics and chorizo spirit. the band starts touring across france in october 1987 and rapidly establishes a solid reputation. a few months later, when the second record putas fever is released, the success is obvious. tracks sung in french, spanish or arabic, pas assez de toi, king kong five or sidi hbibi are immediate hits. after a long live-cruise in 1992 along the south american coasts, la mano negra gets back to france and separates in 1994. its hard to tell the impact of la mano negra across french and spanish speaking countries, with as many particular experiences that people lived during their tours.
