echocord’s echo echo sub-label continues with its third releases this august, courtesy of german producer and credo founder alex bau with his ‘zenstory’ ep. germany’s alex bau has been a prominent name on the underground dj circuit on his home turf, and further afield, for three decaces as well as racking up an impressive back catalogue as a recording artists for labels like cocoon, clr, sleaze and of course his very own credo label which has been a platform predominantly for his own material whilst welcoming the likes of kyle geiger, takkyu ishino and electric rescue onto the imprint also. here though we see bau joining the roster of echocord’s fledgling sub-label echo echo with a new four-track ep and taking the lead on the package is ‘clouds’ with pulsating low-end tones, hissing analogue noise and dusty drums samples all flowing in unison with ethereal chords and sweeping pads. ‘contour’ follows, tipping the focus over to bubbling delayed stab hits, fluttering sub bass and evolving white noise bursts throughout. the ‘prelude’ of ‘zenstory’ opens the flip side and as the name would suggest it’s a cinematic build up to the title-track featuring tension-building, expansive atmospherics ahead of the original mix which features a thumping muted kick, stuttering atmospheric echoes and spoken word vocal tucked into the depths of the record.

for the first in a series of reinterpretations of material from linkwood s superb expressions album, firecracker recordings has turned to chicago deep house veterans ghosts of the sky (aka perpetual rhythms chicagodeep and taelue), and fast-rising machine abusers nummer. the latter dive into an aquatic techno tip, turning the becalmed and melancholic love lost into a techno-tempo stroll through vintage carl craig chords, sweaty machine percussion, and yearning melodies. theres a warmer and heavier, if surprisingly stripped back, feel to ghosts of the sky s version of object, with spluttering electronics and sumptuous chords stretching out over a rich synth bassline and hissing, cymbal-heavy groove.

the next instalment in the my rules catalog sees label owner justin van der volgen take on japanese house legend yukihiro fukutomi aka foog s techy club jam flying . originally available as a digital-only release, it s twisted into two exclusive new versions. on the a-side edit, justin travels down the less walked path of splicing and shortens the track, which along with his subtle drum additions tastefully amplify and sharpen the feeling of tension and release. the b-side dub is a heavy bass and drum mix complete with flanged hissing hi-hats, alien claps and cavernous echoes.

savas pascalidis releases heavy new ep brain waves on atrophic society savas pascalidis is an artist who needs little in the way of introduction. having a career that spans the last 25 years, and releases on a staggering number of great labels (gigolo records, kurbel, non series, mote evolver, stockholm ltd, children of tommorow, skudge, figure and many more), were proud to welcome savas to the atrophic society family. brain waves sees further exploration of the techno that defines savas’ sound. savage, grooving and dripping in nuance, all four cuts on this ep will set the night on fire. distant dreams is a tunnelling beast that twists and turns over itself with insistent percussive slaps and grooving bass, underpinning a driving synth line that stacks up to create a furious ep opener. there were no parts to work from to make a remix with, so in a total class move echologist drops a cover mix of the b1 track resonate, though it could be said that it’s inspired by all the original tracks on the ep. he strips it back to the bare necessities and propels it forward in true echologist style. the original of resonate is noisey and blustery as the title would suggest, hissing and bleeping over a mid range bassline that tastefully peaks and troughs for the length of the journey. finally, rounding out the ep in total class, subminimal crescendo’s with layers of noise and delay over a funk-fuelled rhythm. all four tracks on this forward thinking ep for atrophic society are essential machine-made music and an outstanding addition to savas body of work.

dive-bar turned record label paradise palms presents a brand new 7inch from veteran producer justin robertson, a man with over 23 years experience as an innovator and restless proponent of fascinating forward-thinking music. his tireless work ethic has ensured that he remains one of the most relevant and exciting dj/producers around, as a whole new generation of electronic enthusiasts will sweatily testify. justin s latest incarnation as the deadstock 33s has been garnishing lavish praise from figureheads such as andrew weatherall and erol alkan, as well as a diverse cross-section of fresh talent, from daniel avery to eats everything. cyborg holiday snaps is a double-whammy 7inch of alien machine funk crafted by the rave pilot himself. the titular track launches head&#64257,,,,rst into hissing electro territory with pounding rhythms and detroit-strength bass stabs, while numerical discord is a low-slung 110bpm acid weapon.

throughout the 90’s, dj bone was one of detroit’s best kept secrets. releasing only a handful of 12 inches, bone’s eclectic and fast mixing style became popular in his home town, starting with his weekly residency at the love club, and gaining more all over detroit 5 nights a week, as well as fortnightly live sets on deep space radio. in 1996, laurent garnier witnessed him djing, and invited him to play in paris legendary rex club - a 12 inch for juan atkins metroplex soon followed, with a peel session, and his subject:detroit volume 2 mix cd being distributed worldwide helping to establish him globally as a force in detroit techno. anotherday are very proud to announce the reissue of that legendary metroplex 12 inch, riding the thin line. from the sweeping strings and tribal loops of shut the lites off, to the hissing bassy electro of the funk and woozy techno of the haunting, this is dj bone at the peak of his powers.

creme organization s latest missive comes from fabio monesi, an italian with a gritty house sound that is aimed squarely at the club. he s served up punchy beats on labels like russian torrent versions as well as his own wilson records before now and has a simple but effective sound. riot kicks us off with rock slid kicks and lithe synth stabs fleshing out the macho groove. clever vocal samples bring some steaminess and ensure this one will do plenty of damage on the floor. last friday is a raw and lo-fi affair with rattling, sharp edged hits and hissing synths all softened with jazzy chords. house drums and rolling bass prop it up in groovy fashion, then reduction is a frazzled brew of spiting hits, jerking machine grooves and busted frequencies that is as raw and tough as you like. last of all, the excellent ozyork rounds us out with punchy drum programming, intoxicating and off kilter chords and brain frying sonic imperfections that are perfectly imperfect. add in a deep acid line and you have a surefire house bomb with real meat in its bones.

alleviated veteran ben jenkins launches his new vinyl label partial magic with pittsburgh s chase smith. chase turns in four cuts of percolating-hissing drum machines and squirting- gibbering oscillators. the whole quivering ensemble chugs with an electro snap and a steady dance mania clip until the cool- down of silky and sensuous pads on the closing track.

"pinkman stoke the furnaces of despair, fuelling them with black merlin. conveyor belts grunt out resentment, cold chords curl, synthlines sneer and pallid percussion punctuates. noise echoes above, hammered clanks exploding into shards. below the work continues, sweat smeared stains and hissing airless gasps. in the end, all is swallowed; gulped into the gaping assembly line."

this label is founded by hungarian producer depthon (a contraction of the words -depth- and -on-) with a nonsensical approach to music. as said in the label s statement, the music released hereon, is also a reflection of the mindset of this techno artist. he came a long way, crawling through different genres but ending up in his favorite and most versatile style. and in january, his very first physical release of music will happen on his own imprint. an ep on black gold loaded with 4 weapons that are ready to add up to every quality techno mix and also will destroy the dance floor. 3 of depthon s own works and in addition a remix by glaswegian techno prodigy and sleaze records labelhead hans bouffmhyre. -last train- is the first pulsating and powerful track that works as the opening window of this ep, followed by the remix by bouffmyhre, which could could be described as an immaculate upgrade to the original. on the flipside, it s -faded- that is exemplary to the saying -less is more-: dark and simple pads on a compelling background that surely will keep one s attention throughout the course. last but not least is -timelapse- that contrary to the other tracks uses high pitched synths as a lead, in combination with hissing hi-hats and a constantly changing scenery.

frigio is beyond proud to release the first album from alessandro parisi s sepulchral dwelling pseudonym hesperius draco. donning the ceremonial robes, the conventions of house, techno and horror soundtracks are blurred as past, present and future merge. stalking darkness and light, bordering the divine and profane, -actus tragicus- pulls the dancefloor into the murky shadows of rome. ritualistic chants, chilling choirs and hissing beats are brewed across two slabs of vinyl. bpms dip and rise as hesperius draco takes you on a winding journey through the catacombs of his world.

apollo introduce sieren, aka matthias frick. a software engineer at ableton by day, sierens love for uk influenced bass music and field recording and experimental soundscaping has resulted in this masterly ep of atmospheric street-rave soul. this is his first release since his debut lp transients of light, released earlier this year on christian lofflers ki records. fittingly, fellow apollo cohort synkro was instrumental in the curation of the static polymorphism ep hand picking the tracks, as well as road testing them to memorable effect on berghains hallowed system no less.neglection opens the release, with billowing widescreen pads, a ghostly 2-step drum figure and pulsing subs,rebase ratchets up the intensity, with sinister bass drones punctuated by strafing perc and hissing ambiance while relicts angelic yet melancholic atmosphere pulls the listener in with heart-aching synth washes and whispered female vocals. closer how to pairs mechanistic slo-mo funk with caustic 808 kicks, muttered vox and juddering bass stabs. this is richly textured and intricately programmed post-bass music that is sure to satisfy fans of burial, dbridge, akkord with its soulful sincerity and warmth.

relaxer returns with the second installment on their eponymous label. heavy, virulent and filled with longing, relaxer draws us further into the artist’s fascinating & unique world. side a’s “hissing flora” unspools organically over ten minutes, its melodic tendrils wrapping around a corroded vocal atop a heaving low end. on side b, “weekend” drifts through a beatless mist, with flickers of venomous voices and crumpling synths that shine through drawn shades. “climate of fear” snaps the listener out their uneasy rest with stomping percussion, overflowing arpeggiations and keening harmonies.

farr has a diverse catalogue, with three well-received releases on turbo as well as records with dsnt, leisure system and power vacuum. few producers can claim to have remixed tiga and been remixed by truss.
though farr has an extensive history with bloc., this will be his first outing on the label, a release that incorporates sounds that both bloc and joe are famed for.
the first track, “rpm” features prominently in the bloc festival trailer and is the soundtrack to the 2016 weekender. hissing high hats and an atmospheric baseline quickly develop into an explosive anthem designed to get feet moving. “rolling and thatching” conveys an immediate punch of 90’s acid, followed by techno heavy “workout three” with crunching beats and an unremitting delivery worthy of the berghain dance floor.

after his exciting album elasticity on his own imprint elastic dreams, a sagittariun delivers the equally fascinating three track oxidize ep for german label couldnt care more. while heights is a stripped-down basic-channelish techno ride, rough, edgy and with a hint of hypnotic melodies, the title track heads in a quite different direction: still its raw expressionistic techno, but the flow is ever-changing, mesmerizingly shifting and twisting between hissing beats and enlightened synths. for the remix of oxidize golden pudel club resident and odd-house virtuoso rvds fires up the acid machine and does it detroit style, warm and cold, uplifting and melancholic.

ygrok brings a long-awaited fourth release to its catalog. rene&#769,, audiard’s “sakhalin” takes things a step away from traditional club music.
the a side, “vox out” opens with the skeleton of a rhythm. scattered tom drums and barely detectable whirs, fading and reeling in the background. when the distorted voices begin their story behind a hissing, grinding off-shaker, you know this will not be your traditional club track. a story develops. the barest hint of a shuffling beat, a subtle reminder of soren’s previous work, pins down the journey into the darkest psychic territory. the title track sakhalin steps even further into darkness. crackling electrics and disjointed atmospheres change at a glacial pace over a submerged hydraulic beat. sakhalin audiard experimental territory.

four tracks of hissing, hypnotic paranoia emerge on the debut from relaxer. on the a side, smeared whispers seethe across viscous grooves that pulse with strange, bittersweet strings. side b’s recoil delivers a stomping 137-bpm techno bomb with an elevator-shaft-freefall. the ep dissolves into glowing pathos on the closing track.

bleep repeat makes for a potent first track. here, a thumping step gives way to synth lines that sting and swell across solar systems. things get headier, grittier, reaching a furious and frightening rush with spectral soundbites to match. a homage to uk rave sounds, this track perfectly captures the uncanny pairing of aggression and rapture at the heart of 90s bleep. paper blades follows, a celestial soundscape punctuated with hissing breakbeats and a sinewy bassline. rippling acid lines beam along the astral plane, and a hallucinatory, near-liturgical melody meanders all the while. spaced-out yet inexplicably driving, this track is elevating, enveloping

sheik ‘n’ beik are a nyc based cohort specialising in promotion, production and outletting left­of­centre slices of electronic music. with previous releases from family members derek marin, voiski and peter corvaia their 4th release comes courtesy of danny wolfers (a.k.a legowelt) working alongside rush hour regular xosar under their xamiga alias. with this being xamiga’s 3rd release, the pair draw for their trusted arsenal of analogue gear and offer up the ‘bohemian grove’ ep, a woozy brew of foggy textures, gently frazzled hats and detroit­indebted grooves. the title track kicks things off with glassy pads sat atop a long­tailed thud and a sandy shuffle. a distant bass groove wades in ahead of a passage of intricate, band­passed percussion and a circling synth line before ‘cumulus versie’ sets sheets of ethereal vocals and synth strings gently ducking under a taught analogue pulse. ‘midwest’ then sets hissing kicks and frayed hi­hats alongside a rasping bass tone. pitch­bent synth lines then bubble into focus before ‘blizzard’ sets a dystopian tone from the off. a stout kick drum thunders under minor­key chord shifts and a menacing sequence that works to round off another fine addition to the sheik ‘n’ beik series.

uk techno stalwart steve bicknells lost recordings series must be one of the longest running in dance music, the lost and cosmic founder has been putting out previous unheard material from his early 90s heyday on and off since 2004. there are few surprises on this 10th edition, but plenty of slamming, no-holds-barred grooves. the hissing, spacey, cymbal-heavy track 3 is particularly trippy, while theres a gnarled, ragged intensity about the pulsating heaviness of track 1. arguably best of all, though - ambient interlude track 2 aside - is track 4, an eerie techno shuffler built around a wonky, off-key electric piano loop and fizzing percussion.

straight out of egypt via berlin comes this excellent two-tracker from the little-known son of sun. according to the press release accompanying the whispers ep, both tracks were inspired by a week sailing a yacht around the black sea. true or not (we have our doubts), there s certainly a sun-kissed laziness - despite weighty kick-drums and hissing, detroit techno style cymbals - about the woozy, dubtribe soundsystem style deep house of a-side -moonchild-. while impressive, the real killer is -whispers-, which peppers a swinging, dance mania style hip-house groove with snaking saxophones and atmospheric, spoken word vocals. it feels like a late night adriatic anthem in the making.

if you re going to launch a label, it s always wise to start with a bang. that s exactly what newcomers audio visual have done here, recruiting detroit veteran terrence dixon and chez damier cohort michael zucker (boss of finale recordings, no less) for a four-track trip into deep techno and intergalactic house. dixon goes deep into the groove on the hissing, intoxicating deep techno roller -mta-, before delivering a touch more melody on the retro-futurist gem -over the top-. zucker, on the other hand, opts for a jaydee-does-deep house feel to -foundation (part 1)-, before setting off towards the heavens with the deliciously deep, smooth reflections

a four-track ep, bemired and evil-eyed, but with room for arnaldo to breathe out and flex a little after his spooked, sparked contribution to blank slate 001. the opener is a dubwise bubbler, with spaced-out keys, free woodblocks, shuffling hi-hats and elastic 303 bass. atmosphere breached is more jazzy and messed-up, running funky organ through sizzling fx, syncopated handclaps and filtered groans. the flip is dancefloor-trained. our pick of the bunch, verano is in a dark, hissing, aqueous world of its own, chugging and stomping, with relentless tambourines, crunchy filtered tribal drums and detuned horns. heads down to close: lost voices and a 909 kick, chattering hi- hats and rattling percussion administer the licks.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. format b are back in single business! after their successful high-sea album, the two allow themself a short holiday in the romantic sample land, boiling a hissing, primeval soup called drawn to a ravers potion with which obelix would have smashed up the romans for the next 2000 years to come. as solid as the a1 bomb, the b-side continues. spinning formatesque towards sonic speed, the title rise lives up to its honour while dusk finally underlines the obvious request of this 10th formatik chief-release fatness galore!

summer madness ep is the joint venture by berlin based artists mri, der dritte raum and basti grub. three tracks to feel the sun shining in your face and grooves rolling through your hips. pounding and hissing like a steam engine, summer madness gains momentum out of the city and into the country.

while the first release on wania, busen & paleos >stream of love< (featuring dj sotofetts anthemic overdub-12inchedit) was a rather leftfield affair, dritfett is aimed more directly towards the dancefloor. the label artwork gives a clear clue as to what this release is all about: amongst a number of cryptic messages and shout-outs in norwegian - a tr-909 logo. all the tracks here are based around the 909 - thunderous kickdrums and sharp, hissing hi-hats that cut through the mix. still, theres a broad range of sounds, from head-down, fists-clenched warehouse workouts with an industrial edge, to more melodic tracks with detroit references aplenty. make no mistake though: this is all about the power of the almighty 909. theres no fancy tricks here‚ no ableton-trickery or polished waveforms, just good honest techno with a real raw live feel. this gives the tracks the energy and spontaneity that is sorely missed in many of todays productions. the kind of energy you will find - in abundance - in the house and techno releases of the 90s. the kind of energy that can only be achieved by pressing play on a machine, frenetically twisting knobs and punching buttons while letting the energy of the room decide where to go next.

the mysterious robotalco serves up four deep house cuts for nycs on the prowl. robos road kicks things off with the right amount of hissing strings and slow drifting vibes that win its a1 spot. next up we have it gets to me, which strips things back a bit with pulsing synths, sparse congas, and perfectly placed vocal snippets. on the b-side we get moon robot, it keeps things rolling with its stompy feel and more of whats becoming robotalcos signiture swirling synth pad sound. rounding up the release for b2 is zuk zuk, with its quirky low slung groove that develops into a latin percussive gem...its really a superb way to round off robotalcos otp debut. well done.

now hes back with three glorious deep techno tracks that mark the start of an interplanetary trilogy for the label. lead track >exopshere< takes up where his komisch debut left off, with foreboding, dub-tinged chords building into a menacing climax and swarms of driving, razor sharp percussion keeping the arrangement focused on the dance floor. on the flip, >deep end< sees parallel exploring more esoteric sounds, with swirling, layered chords underpinned by dubbed out drums, heavy claps and hissing percussion, like an update of classic sterac material. >analogue city< brings a mellow end to the release. deep pads and ghostly sounds hover above a warm, splurging bassline that recalls underground resistance in mellow, tripped out mode. if youre looking for the classic sounds reinterpreted for contemporary techno dance floors, then make sure to get an audience with the >cosmic observer<.

whatpeopleplay reels in another biggie for their second release: >western starland< is surely one of the signature tunes by tech-funk luminary john tejada and his long-time collaborateur ariane leviste. originally released in 2001 on his palette imprint this is one of those tunes that never leave the crates of many djs and if you have been dancing anywhere in the last 10 years you will surely instantly recognize those synthetic string chords. tejada himself gets busy here and revamps the also included original with a brand-new 2011 mix: the original signature elements are right there from the start but fused with a beefy house beat, a new bassline, a hissing soul organ and lifted to the next plateau by thundering staccato chords in a classic detroit style. the flip holds the glorious original plus the not any less brilliant john tejada vip mix from 2003.

in fact, >in a hole<, the a-side of their latest 12 inch, is even more dream-steeped than its predecessors. relying on vintage (and in some cases, home made) gear, simon and tsai have constructed a song that is syrupy in pace. darkened tones mingle with floating percussion and vocals processed to nearly melancholic depths. >cant feel my knees< picks up the tempo, and feels slightly sunnier in comparison (>perhaps a result of practicing for the first time in a place with windows<, according to simon), with rippling keys that give way to an open, spacious sigh and an almost playful interlude of warmth and bass punctuations. the two have said theyre interested in the meeting point of house and noise, and thats particularly apparent on the two remixes that appear here. >in a hole dub< is slower, more bare-boned and ghostlier than the track from which its derived, while >cant feel my knees dub< is filled with white noise emissions and hissing electro shocks.

following the success of his debut ep, komisch is delighted to put out the next instalment from sp-x. like his first release, the three tracks on field lines never end capture the essence of contemporary techno - austere and functional, yet deeply resonating. field construction starts with crackle of a broken power cable accompanying brittle percussion and a juggernaut rhythm, before dank filters, distorted riffs and a combination of doubled up claps and hissing hats bring the track to an irresistibly dark climax. internalize follows a similar path, but straight away sp-x plots a more ominous course, with a muffled filter making way for jarring riffs, a grubby acid line and killer claps. last but certainly not least, flux is constructed using dense rhythms, deadweight, iron bar beats and a howling siren riff that sounds like it came from beyond. all the while, sp-xs rasping, firing percussion weaves in and out. these are deadly effective techno tracks, streamlined for use on big speakers - but dont take our word for it, try them out yourselves!
