the godzilla kebab label was started in 2012 by sames, is based in saint-petersburg, russia and now serves up its 6th ep, a four track affair that calls on various artists from across the world. quintessentials associate andy ash, label boss sames, sam williams (aka chamboché) and sam halsall (elevator) come together as ampers& and finally replika are the names who turn in one tune each with the results making for fresh house listening. bad cat is the first jam and it comes from sames.

in the psychedelic late sixties there was a lively music scene in the canterbury area that revolved around the band the wilde flowers. they never recorded much themselves, however, but after they disbanded other influential bands were formed from their ashes: gong, soft machine, and, most importantly, caravan.
caravans eponymous debut was released in 1968. it was considered a groundbreaking album capturing the freakish and exploratory moods of the times. their sound went much further than the changing styles of the contemporary underground and that is what distinguished caravan from other bands in their genre.

rather lightweight live album, only thirty four minutes long, three songs and some painful applause herding for an encore. the line-up is essentially the girls line-up, though john g. perry s been replaced by an also-excellent mike wedgwood. the production is clear but the mix misjudged: the admittedly nicely brought out bass sound dwarfs all other elements. in particular, pye hastings guitar is very low, the drums never seem to match the bass volume.

dark disco references are heavy throughout with a great use of strings licks, a slo-motion vocal sample and a classic cowbell keeping everything nicely in check. as with most of octobers productions though he still has one foot firmly inside berghainrendering this essentially disco track into something with more of a late night, broody edge.

oh ruin is eoin o ruinaigh, originally from dublin but now residing in london. having started out playing in a host of bands, at one point embarking on a tour supporting morrissey, he has now gone solo and is turning out such six-string gems as the two tracks collected on this single. a beguiling melange of untempered blues and campfire songs which draw on a rich irish folk tradition, eoins songs are intricately drawn sketches accompanied by deftly finger-picked melodies, even performed on guitars made by eoin himself.
