repress from spiritual r&b/soul album from 1982! the album we want a piece of the pie is the product of a joint effort between los angeles songwriter/producer anthony browne and the woolfolk brothers of oklahoma, with their seven-piece funk band, septimus. the two parties sent tape reels back and forth to each other in the mail to assemble this masterpiece of buoyant and spiritual r&b... and 36 years later, those tapes have found their way into the hands of cultures of soul records! remastered from the original tapes, this new edition of we want a piece of the pie presents the legendarily rare lp to a broad market for the first time, radiating all its sunny optimism and infectious dance grooves.

2018 repress, standard lp jacket rather than the old school stoughton jacket as on the first edition, no dl card cultures of soul record brings to you an anthology of the music of evans pyramid. this album features all of the officially released singles plus four previously unreleased tracks. 1000 ltd pressing. delux gatefold stoughton paste-on jacket and download card to 4 previously unreleased bonus cuts. huge tip! andre evans was the mastermind behind evans pyramid, a seasoned performer and session player in boston throughout the 70s. full of unique disco and boogie stylings, this release includes all of the rare singles such as never gonna leave you, dip drop, no i wont and i want your body, as well as a recently discovered 45 that features two top-notch disco tracks - dance a thon and rubber band. the album also includes four unissued tracks taken from the original demo tapes. thanks to praise and adulation from gilles peterson, dj kon, the noble brothers and joey negro, as well as other respected djs and collectors around the world, evans pyramid is the undisputed king of boston boogie.

cultures of soul records has teamedup with local boston disco queen saucy lady to put together a 12inch, released in conjunction with their tokyo nights female j-pop boogie funk compilation. this 12inch features a cover of the sublime song town, originally recorded by minako yoshida. the b-side is a cover of honey b, originally written and recorded by toshinobu kubota. both tracks are recreated and produced by saucy lady and yuki u-key kanesaka.

known in the record collecting world as an incredibly rare album with just a handful of known copies, we present for the first time the full length album reissue of the two sisters from bagdad album as performed by la vice & co.

the second single from the cultures of soul compilation, boogie breakdown: south african disco 1980 to 1984, benjamin ball’s -i just keep dancing- is a synth and drum machine-fueled track that also reveals ball as one of south africa’s earliest rappers. boston-bred djs, soul clap provide an excellent rework of the track adding some big room club flavor to the track for djs around the world. soul clap are the globe trotting dj duo of eli goldstein and charles levine who ve done everything from headlining clubs in ibiza to creating dj mix albums for fabric and dj kicks to making records with george dj/producer and co-founder of the running back label, gerd janson provides two funked up rerubs of the track, one with vocals and one without. licensed directly from the artist and housed in a custom disco sleeve these edits won t be available on the compilation.

benjamin balls flash a flashlight came out just after brenda & the bigdudes massive hit weekend. ball s unique reggae-tinged synth boogie was nearly as big and became the second bubble gum anthem of the era. big tip!

greg belson s divine disco is a snapshot in time encapsulating the raw power of a spiritual performance, set to the pulsating 4/4 rhythms that were in vogue with the dance floors of the day. tip! labels like savoy played a key part in identifying artists that fit nicely into this brand new style with performers like shirley finney and the gospelaires, both of whom were established within the scene, but carried the disco torch brightly with their tunes featured here. divine disco also paints a picture of the lesser known acts that privately released their message to the hopeful masses, such as the gospel ambassadors and the inspirational souls, whose recording budgets would have been significantly less than any major label.

uk techno stalwart steve bicknells lost recordings series must be one of the longest running in dance music, the lost and cosmic founder has been putting out previous unheard material from his early 90s heyday on and off since 2004. there are few surprises on this 10th edition, but plenty of slamming, no-holds-barred grooves. the hissing, spacey, cymbal-heavy track 3 is particularly trippy, while theres a gnarled, ragged intensity about the pulsating heaviness of track 1. arguably best of all, though - ambient interlude track 2 aside - is track 4, an eerie techno shuffler built around a wonky, off-key electric piano loop and fizzing percussion.
