what attracts us to chilean-born artist ricardo tobar is the notion of intersection, and although fusion is nothing new, as a concept it will always pull our heartstrings. applying influence is amateur, we see this over and over again as we endure trend-driven appropriation of cultures the world over, but the epiphany when an artist finds true synergy between heritage and influence is a pivotal moment that the inspired will seek, even though it may take the length of one’s career to behold. as pretentious as that may sound, it is precisely the hybrid born from that place of intersection that excites us at the esp institute, the a plus b that equals 3. we hear this in ricardos music the latin american instinct in his drums and percussion, sometimes tightly aligned with body movements and other times hauntingly mis-aligned and chaotic, intersects with his rock influence of ethereal (micro) melodies that slowly layer and layer until were climbing a glorious (macro) wall of sound but most importantly we hear where these different parts of his life come together to further create one unique voice. on both sides of his esp institute debut liturgia, tobar couples one pulsing dance-driven track with another atmospheric and immersive track, requiring we educate ourselves in the polarity of this language he’s building, one that will expand to tell a broader story later this year with his debut album. we welcome ricardo tobar, another forward-thinking artist, to the esp institute, and are proud to support any direction his compass points from here, as we believe hell never follow but will always lead.

this is the third volume of random numbers split series. a cross-section of the italian experimental scene in 5 volumes. each artist is assigned to one side of a c50 tape, in which express his music without compromises. volume 3 is entrusted to somec and von tesla. somec gives us 20 minutes of raw recordings of a mythical machine, a buchla 208, which stops its technology to the 70s. all recorded live with the aid of a computer. in less technical terms, napolis work can be summarized in a handful of eccentric hallucinations – pretentious recreations for quirky programmers – polished fiction. nwh2o is a long journey through interstellar landscapes and claustrophobic extraterrestrial rhythms, transmissions from other times and places. von tesla presents a more romantic vision of his world, divided into a triptych, touch / enter / flesh. dreaming representation of a meeting, where the romantic tones are obfuscated by a drop of lsd, which changes the colors, shapes and volumes. a slow movement toward the transformation of the body, an approach to transhumanism that mingles technology in the body, a genesis of tetzuo (the man of steel / tetzuo shima) of the years 10.

flexxseal label owner christopher joseph returns for the fifth edition of the series. christopher bridges the gaps between “classic” and “contemporary”, he expresses the concept of music as a continuation, a narrative, and leaves no space for pretentious judgement.

alr001 is tech-house based track features one late-night club cut of pure, padded brilliance. the original mix is a meditative, as it blissfully sways between softly thumping bass and euphoric synth snippets. hamburg based well known dj cess (formally from also known from cocoon booking) re-edited the track for dj s with a male spoken monologue that, despite being a tad pretentious, actually kind of weirdly works. fittingly, its the most dance floor appropriate of the bunch and would slip nicely into a bleary-eyed, 6am sunrise set.

franck collin, aka fleck e.s.c, is an electro artist originally from france but currently living in tokyo. franck’s earlier experience playing bass and drums in bands and his love of horror, science fiction and b-movies, naturally drove him to the electro scene. with additional influences rooted in new wave, contemporary, techno and ambient, fleck e.s.c tries to avoid the clichés of electro, leaning more toward the spooky side of horror and sci-fi and the cheap retro sounds in tribute of the movies he loves. never too serious or pretentious and always striving for fresh sounds, fleck e.s.c’s music aims to distract the body and the brain.
his ‘nice guy ep’ comprises two killer new tracks that emphasize this sound, the dappled ‘what r we waiting 4’ and the ominous tones of ‘nice guy’. remixes of the latter come from london modular’s pip williams with a sweeping rendition, alongside the mighty carl finlow who also adds his magic touch...

after 2 blinding releases on lies and russian torrents, the italian uprising techno producer domenico crisci lands on fellow italian marco shuttles label eerie with some serious, 909 driven, stripped down techno biz. no matter how pretentious it might sound these are tracks that gravitate quite comfortably in a mills-esque kind of orbit but they somehow also remind of early downwards brutal material. label boss marco shuttle features in the ep with a remix of one of the tracks (lash) bringing the original into a more broken, abstract and dark (of course) territory.

after being returned from his abduction by aliens from the hidden planet nibiru, dj overdose was given an alien synthesizer the haex-hrll as a thank you for all the cerebral research the aliens did on him. on returning back to earth all dj overdose had to do was finish the 6 tracks the aliens had started to work on, which became this ep. straight forward techno hop electro funk without any fancy-pants pretentious hooha. its like a black and white movie which makes you think why the hell is there colors anyway?! after completion, the only record label he could imagine being fit for such rawness would be viewlexx... and so here it is.

vanessa (a dreamer) is the second 12 inch from brooklyn-based artist divvorce on fifth wall, the imprint he founded last february with hound scales. drawing influence from such pretentious sources as franz kafka, the early work of darren aronofsky, and a solitary walk through the streets of paris during fashion week, the ep consists of two compact slices of techno(?) and two remixes. first is the meandering, dreamlike *wander 7*, followed by the truculent but jubilant *roquentins release* and finishing with remixes by fellow fifth wall artists physical therapy and unklone.

now techno has its own fair trade. basmati, the new label by gabriel ananda (artist direction) and marcel janovsky (management), does not indulge in pretentious bragging. epic tracks are rarely seen in such a light-footed mood: gabriel ananda shakes his hairdo again, this time in cooperation with floor hope daniel mehlhart and the pioneers from superstitions quazar. the results are two genre-bending tracks, whose friendliness makes them look like 10 minute long wolves in sheeps clothing. pinpoint funk with panoramic view, coming from true masters of all classes.

the model is no stranger to gigolo, and we (the royal we) are no strangers to the model. as a supporter of gigolo records, you, our fated reader, should be familiar with our protagonist previous gigolo adventure. but in the words of the late george harrison, >all things must pass< and with this in mind we would like to reintroduce...
the model doesnt just have his own sound, he has in fact attempted to engineer his own genre: dark-techno-baroque. the sound has been crafted through a penchant for aristocratic mannerisms and a passion for high fashion and low fetish. it also happens to pretty succinctly sum up part of his unique personality. set against a backdrop of refined charm, there s an underbelly of something dark and brutal, which is possibly the best way to describe the a-side >in the night<. in many ways this could be seen as a return to form for gigolo, immediately poppy but structured as a classic song with haunting vocals underpinned with a driving techno rhythm. to further consolidate the techno aesthetic look no further then >flex on the b-side and you have a pounding track that could have been played by daft punk in 96 and will probably find a home with a diverse selection of djs today.
the >vampire funk ep< is the first release from the models forthcoming album on gigolo. the concept is in the same vain, but delves deeper into the dark-side of the model. exploring his fetish with the night and creatures that occupy its opulent corridors. like classic transylvanian tales the music from this album will present details that set the mood and composition to create tracks with narrative regardless of lyrics or words. the result being music that moves both bodies and minds and stirs the blood. as pretentious as this sounds the author of this mindless scrap of paper has the fortunate privilege of speaking from experience. as the mind that moves the hands that moves the keyboard is the mind that is being moved by the music as i type and you read. so we are already part way there. the rest will unfold in the coming months.

igor from antwerp went a little crazy with one of his favorite pieces of music... but what igor did is not just another cover or re-intrepetation... he did make a highly expolsive track based on stravinsky s classic sacre du printemps. ok we agree.. that sounds kind of corny and pretentious... but somehow this bloke managed to get it all right. sounds like a forgotten techno classic from suburban knight who was recording with laurent garnier in his good old days and had henrick schwarz as studio engineer... a classic take on techno with a break that will revive more than one igor. this is a euphoric hands in the air, goose bumps al over record that works at the right moment.

fusing latin american sounds with european electronic beats can often produce a bland and rudderless dross destined for derivative lounge compilations and deliriously dull playlists at pretentious after work cocktail bars. not so with the aptly named 1st trip, the superb sophomore effort from the equally aptly named los transatlanticos.
