afterlife keeps on going strong! earlier this month they brought us tale of us & vaals monument and that just got a proper remix treatment. no others than stephan bodzin and barnt, two artists, who stand out notably for their unique sound took turns on the original lead track and put their very personal touch on it.

tale of us present a new collaboration with vaal for the sixth release on their afterlife label. three years after they teamed up for -concur- and began to tour together, the trio return with their most anthemic offering yet.

the 3 release. 3 artists. 3 solid tracks. rex hansson has made a solid original version. you clearly hear his skills as a past percussionist. the beats together with skånska vocals, low key rhodes and some 303 knob twiddling make this track special and great. emil nyman. this mix is something. it’s tossing and turning from a metallic sound to the softest wood. from the deepest parts of the ocean we follow the pads and organ up in the sky. the b side is dedicated clark eng. a minimal offbeat version with low toms and rattling high sticks, claps and snares. the track is moving like a newcomen engine. the minor changes all the time makes it to a hypnotic minimal house track.

monosoul is back on tieffrequent with 4 timeless and classical cuts focussed on the important elements of housemusic...with love for the dancefloors, clubs and basements of this universe... on the a-side you have „make em match“, a rough and steady house-groove containing a constantly bouncing bassline, a deep chord-pattern, a complex percussion-cluster and a well infixed electric piano...all elements are perfectly balanced, finalized and formed to a completed floorfiller. then there is „monument street“ after which the ep was named. starting really deep and minimalistic it developes to an impulsive und powerful song. organic pads, pulsating deep chords, a rhythmic bassline and well arranged drums make „monument street“ flowing impressively from start to finish. the b-side starts up with „hot concrete“, a blazing, drum-driven basement-groover. with a sharp deepchord which is wrapped-up in several padsound-patterns, monosoul creates a very own athmosphere. in combination with an impulsive bassline and a distinct percussion- ensemble „hot concrete“ beats time on the floor noticeably. finally „life on the red island“ as the perfect final track brings the „monument street ep“ to an end. it builds up by adding small bits and pieces very subtly to a point you recognize a pulsative deephouse beauty. the remarkable bassline and the concise and bouncing kickdrum are casted in a flowing deep sounded carpet full of hope. „life on the red island“ disappears to where it came from and leaves you with strong impressions. the „monument street ep“ gives an insight into monosoul s impressive understanding and definition of house music which you can hear on 4 tracks loud and clear...thank you!

monument builders is the new album from loscil, the ambient/electronic project of prolific composer scott morgan. it was primarily created on sample-based instruments in morgan ’,s century-old vancouver home. like that aged space, this music is also rough-hewn, with rickety samples of boiling kettles and resonant moving air. recordings from a vintage micro-cassette recorder contribute distortion, rattles and textures that serve as both percussion and abstract aural color.

chicago dj and producer olin follows up the debut release on his new record label, boundary movement, with tpi featuring four diverse cuts. up-tempo electro, moody minimalism, old-school melodies, and chugging deep house all woven seamlessly. the a side begins with “tpi,” an exercise in minimalism and micro-detail. unmistakably olin’s own, insistent synth stabs keep time while needlepoint percussion keeps the ear guessing. if you thought olin’s palette was limited to techno and house, a2 “corsaren” will prove you wrong — this is pitch-perfect electro in a classic style, a slow-building interplay of sci-fi synthesizers wrapped around icy cool call-and-response kicks and handclaps. b1 “thanks rob” is bom02’s most straightforward cut — and one of its best. building momentum slowly across its eight-minute runtime, “thanks rob” impresses as the larger-than-life bass swell hits. the dancefloor will be rapt – proceed carefully. b2 “hyssop,” feeling like it comes from a similar vintage as “corsaren,” might have been called “ambient techno” decades ago, but its upwardly mobile percussion makes it feel as at home in a club as it does in the chill-out room. it’s just the thing to close out this broad-spectrum record. – chris zaldua

statue is a live percussion based dance project, the brainchild of melbourne drummer tom gould. over the past five years he has honed his craft in cult melbourne bands no zu and worlds end press but now greets the dance world under the moniker statue. after featuring in last years beats in space - best of the year list with his debut 12-, his second ep ‘monument is a reflection of the human and a testament to dance floors both indoor and out. monument further establishes statue as a fixture in melbourne’s dance music culture, constructed for both warm afternoons and the sweaty early hours of australian summer. the ep traverses multiple tempos, between techno, house and tribal percussion, creating a world of warm percussive dance floor odysseys arriving parched and thirsty for more at it’s aural peak, monument. the expedition ends with an expansive remix by disco halal king pin and recent esp institute alumni, moscoman

olin follows his debut on giegling sub-label g~~g~~~g by launching his very own imprint, boundary monument. the record s a-side is taken up by -conne- an extended techno work building in momentum until the bassline explodes and all the track s pieces fall into place. -foist,- a tune as playful as it is dizzying, opens the b-side. then comes -biota,- a nine-minute-long thing of beauty that feels just as delicate and just as mesmerizing as the a-side and works just as well for at-home listening as it does in the club. bom 01 is olin’s most confident and composed work to date, and his brilliantly simple, utilitarian philosophy as a producer shines through: -i make tracks so that i can play out what i want to hear.-

josefine hellstrom hanssons debut track -water cave- on hmwla received adj support from ailario alicante, robert babicz, piemont, slam, paco osuna, horse meat disco, nick warren, gabriel ananda and ame. now the malmo-based producer and dj readies a three track techno / house ep on hmwl s vinyl sublabel heartbreak records. on a-side alongside -water cave- josefine offers a peak hour techno weapon called -sensus-. on b-side we find the smooth melodic -volcanics- at 118 bpm while fellow swede martinez deconstructs sensus into a jazzy, mellow piece of minimal tech.

last year’s ‘the age of compassion’ by chicago underground house don tevo howard was one of the standout tracks for buzzin’ fly in 2011with widespread dj and media support. it joined his burgeoning body of work on other acclaimed labels such as rush hour and his own beautiful granville. now tevo returns with his follow-up for buzzin’ fly. if ‘the age of compassion’ was a simple and elegant dancefloor bump wrapped in warm analogue melancholia, then the ‘monument ep’ is its nemesis - a stark future-retro reinterpretation of the origins of house music build from the bare components of machines: raw drums, sub bass, sine waves, square waves and oscillators. and yet there is still a burnished beauty to this ep. all three tracks seems to find echoes of each other in their arrangements and brittle harmony. machine music for the modern age edged with passion and feeling, and another fresh step for its producer.
