.elliot.project. & open label boss frazer campbell marks his 40th birthday with a special double-vinyl release. in the course of the past two years, campbell s intriguing .elliot.project. label has already gained huge momentum in the electronic scene. following his recent collaboration on steve o sullivan s mosaic records, the label reaches it s sixth release with a double vinyl pack from campbell himself. he continues to paint beautiful musical illustrations, spanning global influences from detroit, icelandic electronica through to the initial aesthetic of uk dubstep. alongside campbell s originals, dred records label head john osborn, known for his peak time slick techno, provides a remix for raising snakes , illustrating both common ground and an alternative direction.

open s 5th release invites japan s sasaki hiroaki from yotsume music. sasaki s smooth blend of thoughful tech house has been presented in 2 original pieces as key ingredients for any after hours gathering expressing tripped out broken piano excursions with subtle driving drums. frazer campbell pulls his version back from the after party to the daytime with a version that raises the heartrate with bold 101 synth leads and chicago influenced percusion. finest hours pablo tarno joins the release with his signature sound of garage meets early techno providing a classy envelope of silk like power for the peak time floor.

as the summer closes and the autumn arrives the project releases its next selection with label boss frazer campbell and dark arts techno head stu crosbie. not a stranger to the label having appeared on the previous release stuart once again delivers his unique filtered sound of stripped back minimal techno with hints of trippy yet groovy influences of dark back room excursions. a real master of simplicity but exact definition of sombre sounds. the flip side presents a very different sonic description by frazer. ‘bleeding gums’ holds broken beat kicks with rolling drums but as always carries a true sense of emotion and warmth. the ep closes with ‘deebling mugs’ which is a production full of drive, dirty basslines and groove that will keep any dance floor moving as we wave goodbye to the summer of 2017.

with spring well and truly in the air and party season in step, mosaic records boss steve o sullivan launches mosaic s 38th release - joining forces with fellow londoner frazer campbell for a new studio collaboration. not content with letting the dust settle from his recent work alongside ricardo villalobos, o sullivan has stayed a little closer to his london home to work with frazer campbell for this latest tag team effort. a dextrous hand in the mix and producer in his own right, campbell has a passion for all things that sit on the deeper end of the house, techno and electronica spectrum. in his own words, thought emoting music is central to his mission having launched open recordings and elliot project records last year: a worthy sparring partner indeed. since the start of the year, the pair had their heads down focusing on finding a happy medium between deeply swung grooves and the airy influences of detroit - shaking out an interesting trio of tracks for their label debut. far from treading the obvious path, the main event a1 hypnotonic revels in a lighter touch as metronomic beat programming cycles endlessly to a held set of notes. off-kilter bass pulses, warped out vocals and effect splashes all intersect to keep the energy input constant as they capture one of those less frenzied moments where the very notion of time seems to hold still. make no mistake, this is a slow burn vibe. head to the flipside b1 soultonic to plunge yourself straight into hip twitching mode when the lights go down. a deep chord, syncopated hats and deftly tweaked synths echo as a full dose of shuffle inflicts its move. simple yet so effective, this track will not let you down. winding things back up a touch, the tougher edge of alleyway funk pushes the feeling on thanks to a thumping kick and a deft nod towards uk garage. met with a soft glisten of a rhodes piano and tweakish melody, the pair round things off in a boyant mood - fans of soul capsule and schatrax will no doubt agree. repeat play of this ep is recommended as its all the more rewarding for it.

this year experienced the birth of frazer campbell s deeper imprint elliot project recordings. the london based label launched back in spring with a real statement piece, composed of detailed minimal, late night seductive twinkles and a drone styled techno piece. the labels projected thought process for the future is to navigate through a varied soundscape of deeper excursions and thoughtful techno. this second ep with two originals from frazer, also includes a remix from highly respected uk musician tom ellis who increases the heat on the track light with a energetic but thoughtful techno re work.

weekend loving from jennifer lara is a perfect blend of boogie funk, roots reggae and lovers rock. produced by black solidarity records in 1985, this album is a masterpiece from the studio one princess. recorded at tuff gong and music mountain studios in jamaica, the rhythm tracks are played by some of the best musicians from the island in the sun: lincoln style scott (drum), errol flabba holt (bass), robbye lyn (piano & synthetiser), dean frazer & ronald nambo robinson (horns). this reissue was carefully remastered from black solidarity master tape, now presented as a double lp 45 rpm dj friendly edition. the original limonious artwork was reloaded and a bonus track was added to complete the set: ’in my time’, an obscure slow synth groove, full of hope and melancholy. jennifer lara was first taken to studio one in 1969 by keyboardist richard ace, who was a session musician. she never left the studio one family and became resident harmonist. she added backing vocals to the songs of some of the camp’s biggest names, including delroy wilson, freddie mcgregor, dennis brown and sugar minott. in 1974, jennifer lara recorded her debut album with coxsone dodd at studio one in brentford road. the results of the sessions appeared on studio one presents jennifer lara, which was an instant success. jennifer lara was one of clement coxsone dodds protégés. one year after coxsone passed, she died at the kingston public hospital. she is survived by two children, daughter ika and son cheka. jennifer lara was a very likeable person, got on with everyone. she was involved in many benefit concerts to help to poor and the needy in jamaica. may your soul rest in peace, we love you jennifer.

elliot project 003 due out in late may 2017 moves towards a selection of interesting pieces with two originals by greek artist hemo. the first original, entitled ‘clouds’ is a moving electro journey with powerful pads and subtle basslines. ‘dogman’ turns a corner delivering a cosmic styled disco flight with catchy riffs and resonating bass leads. s. crosbie from the dark arts imprint also joins the project remixing ‘clouds’ into stripped back techno and frazer campbell closing off the release with an emotion fueled version of ‘dogman’.
