2013 sees the release of norwegian disco viking rune linbaeks latest long player, on his drum island label. its his first album since the 2000 release (sondag) on paper recordings repap offshoot. last years single wonder feat kurt maloo on the label was a day one sell out here at all ears and marked a significant maturing of runes trademark sound. the influence of norway on the worlds forward thinking disco scene & beyond is more than evident, with countrymen like todd terje, prins thomas and hans peter lindstrom all leading the charge for years now. the creative cauldron of the infamous club in a public toilet skansen has much to answer for! krasava is a very much vocal led project, with a cast of featured vocalists which includes norwegian popstar anneli drecker alongside recent collaborator Øyvind blikstad. the album is steeped in norwegian folklore, visually and musically and the gentle lilt of the norse/balearic sound, sits comfortably alongside more cosmic flavours, rock and beautifully crafted pop.

this record has been created as a resource for sample-based music producers and provides a selection of 4/4 grooves and breaks: from minimalist to intricate, straight to swung, and also includes single hits of vintage kicks, snares, hi-hats, toms and cymbals, all recorded at ata records studio a with 1960s analog recording gear onto 2” tape before being mixed and mastered for vinyl. simon allen is the drummer and co-founder of british funk quartet, the new mastersounds. since the band formed in leeds, uk in 1999 he has played drums on all twelve of their studio albums and toured extensively across north america, europe and japan. on his adventures with nms, simon has jammed with funk and soul-jazz legends such as fred wesley, pee wee ellis, maceo parker, art neville, lou donaldson and melvin sparks, as well as fellow drummers bernard purdie and zigaboo modeliste, all of whose music has profoundly influenced his “deep pocket” approach to the drum kit.

limited, andres (aka dj dez) is back on david a-ps hot pot records with uptempo 7 inch flips, done only in the way andrés can! i cant understand it kicks off the release with plenty of drums and bubbly bass to keep the dance floor pumping. on the other side is loleatta disco flip, a full on mpc chop with dez’s chunky drum programming and just the right amount of synare. we love a 7 inch that knocks like a 12 inch

después de la muerte (after the death in spanish) is an ep of four cuts of the barcelonian producer headbirds and the first release in vinyl of the ochomel label.

on the a side, the tracks have a dub scene with deep house influences of minimalist cut and sub basses at very low frequencies, with flashes of light in their arrangements.

on the b side, the first track is a flow of increasing energy, a melodic passage with a cosmic air and a deep bass drum. the second cut is a beautiful piece of art, a story of 5 minutes of deep melancholic sensation with an intense riff, a techno flavor of the 90s.

we have a great collaboration album from unam zetineb and soolee distributed each original tracks and remixes. interpolate is produced by spanish techno producer unam zetineb which has chocking bass energy and gentle but harsh beats. another track tense is produced soolee, label head from south korea. it has highly tensed electric loops with pounding drum. each remixes are also showing different color of original mixes.

b-stock! cover with seam split. vinyl unaffected & mint. a year after his debut outing on the label, max essa makes a welcome return to hell yeah with the han zon roc ep, which is another of his impossibly laidback offerings. essa is of course the long time uk talent who has become a part of the balearic mafia thanks to releases on labels like aficionado, music for dreams, and his own jansen jardin. this is the second coming together of artist and label and is another timeless excursion far out to sea. opener han zon roc (midori coup) is an epic 12inch minute adventure that slowly awakens your spirit with new age guitar plucks and heavenly ambience before organic drums slowly being to drift into earshot. they grow ever larger as synths start to spray about the mix, hand drums pitter patter and big chords bring the soul-shine. its like the soundtrack to an afternoon boat party all condensed into one brilliant cut. how you showed me everything then gets super chill with lazy drum tumbles, bendy guitar lines and scattered hits. withering cosmic chords colour the airwaves and its a track that will slow your heartbeat to nothing. last of all, rain birds alfalfa jam is a analogue drum work out with early 90s hip hop influences and diving basslines. it s light and airy, nimble and playful and of course filled with the sort of tropical rays that make all of essa works so brilliantly escapist.
