drunken foreigner band is a brooklyn-based ensemble that makes a sprawling electrified iteration of the akha and lam lao musics of thailand and laos. the majority of the bands music was learned from cassette tapes of the largely-vocal music traditions, gathered by keyboardist dave kadden on his trips to southeast asia. comprising members of sunwatchers, invisible circle and other experimental brooklyn outfits, they are releasing their debut lp white guy disease on electric cowbell records.

a chance encounter in barcelona, spain brought us together to make this record happen. it’s a precious little marvel of love from kou keri kou and electric cowbell. based in barcelona, spain, the group began with the aim of making music to dance to, taking inspiration from all over the world with no fear: the music from cuba, perú, jamaica, congo and nigeria is as important for kou keri kou as the music played in europe or in the united states. los zafiros, gary numan, los destellos, radio futura, sunny ade and kiko veneno share place in their imagination and help them create open-minded pop that always looks to the future. their lyrics are sometimes open, sometimes a bit more cryptic, sometimes political and sometimes biting, but always try to communicate with the listeners while trying to make them dance. they’ve been playing together for two years, creating songs that didn’t exist before, urging the people to dance and singing about their issues, which may also be yours.

the unstoppable most excellent unlimited charges ahead with the ninth in the heralded mr. k 45s edits series, with this latest edition the most intriguing to date. deep in danny krivit s voluminous collection is a 7-inch acetate rescued from the records left behind by master mixer and dj walter gibbons when he passed away in 1994. the mysterious plate, simply labeled -1, 2, 3,- was custom cut by gibbons for his personal use in the early 70s when he and a partner operated a service called melting pot sounds that provided one-off copies of otherwise unobtainable imports for nyc disc jocks. most of the 20-odd known releases on melting pot sounds have been identified, but the true provenance of -1, 2, 3- has remained elusive. the tune is a screaming, instrumental disco delight, with aggressive clavinet riffing broken up periodically by raunchy sax. for this most excellent unlimited issue, mr. k meticulously transferred his unique gibbons acetate and further intensified the already propulsive track with a few choice edits of his own. not to be outdone, the flip side focuses on a ferocious percussion break that has previously only been available on a very poor quality 12-inch single. -sweet summer suite- by love unlimited orchestra has long been noted for its intro, a concoction of conga, cowbell, cuica and cabasa that drives dancers wild with its relentless, intense groove underpinned by a booming bass slide. making its 7-inch debut here, the groove has been extended and teased as only a master could do, complimenting the a-side and creating a powerful dj weapon. as always, this most excellent unlimited single has been mastered and pressed to the highest standards with loud dj usage in mind, and will be available in extremely limited quantities

bawrut has had an amazing couple of years. since kicking our label off back in 2015 with the modern acid classic ciquita (12inches of which will now set you back silly money on discogs), the madrid-based producer has gone from strength to strength. last year saw him tear down sets at sonar and farr festivals, drop a feted new ep on hard fist records, and have his music soundtrack numerous adverts for fabric events. other djs have been quick to show their appreciation, and bawrut’s unique appeal can be seen in how far and wide across the spectrum his music has featured. optimo, avalon emerson, patrick topping, jackmaster, artwork, andrew weatherall and many more have all supported heavily. were proud to kickstart bawrut’s 2018 with 4x4, a brand new ep of typically leftfield bangers. these four tracks come on like a whirlwind journey through a bawrut dj set, with something for every time of the night. ghettoscar fuses african chants with burbling acid, building the kind of goodtime dancefloor warmth bawrut is famed for. more cowbell does exactly what you’d expect, giving djs a glorious, cowbell-powered disco bomb that fuses the spirit of incredible bongo band with classic nyc house. i hear voices is a crazy ride, with an expertly cut up vocal sample repurposed into a weird, descending riff that’s quite unlike anything else out there. throw in bawrut’s trademark kitbag of carnival whistles, rattling latin percussion and a creeping acid line that works itself up into a soul-salving joy and youve got a modern classic on your hands. finally, lead track three sounds is probably bawruts biggest moment to date, a peak time jacking techno monster built from the most minimal of elements - drums, claps, a one note bass squelch and a tom drum gone wild. bawrut takes this tom sound and treats it like a 303, pushing far off the rails, working it up and up, twisting it through pitch and frequency like a man possessed, raising its pressure til it tears off the roof. theres no one else making techno quite like it - and you can expect dancefloors to be going crazy to the mania of three sounds throughout 2018 so there you have it - four more missives from the wizard of madrid. play em loud.

robo arigo is an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist from nigeria’s ogun state. a founding member of pogo ltd, he played bass, guitar and organ on both their albums and plays all kinds of instruments, including cowbell, on sexy thing too. one listen to the record, however, (and a quick look at the back of the cover), and it’s pretty clear that playing bass is where robo’s heart lay. especially when he gets to slap it.

luciano continue his newly launched basaec imprint with * saved & slaved*, a two-track release featuring collaboration with argenis brito. swiss-chilean producer and dj luciano has been at the forefront of underground electronic music for quite some time now, heading up the infamous cadenza imprint and releasing material for some of the industry’s leading labels such as perlon, desolat, cocoon and poker flat amongst many others. here we see luciano back on his recently launched basaec label, delivering some of his signature stripped-back, dynamic and emotive material ‘lost in lymbo’ takes the lead and sees luciano offer up a typically intricate twelve-minute excursion with subtly modulating and evolving percussion, spiralling synth swells, sporadic vocal chants and a smoothly unfolding aesthetic resulting in an archetypal and intriguing production from this forever forward-thinking artist. the latter half sees luciano paired with fellow cadenza artist argenis for ‘pato’s track’, stripping back the vibe to a raw cowbell and rim shot percussive-led state whilst lumpy subs, vocal murmurs and subtly unfolding flute like melodies ebb and flow throughout the composition.

nancy azzurro comes out of nowhere. well, that’s not entirely true—lovefingers met her about 10 years ago on the beach near her home on the island of sardinia—but in terms of our musical orbit, she is a very private artist, creating only the purest music, straight from the heart. these three gorgeous songs were produced during her young adulthood and would become secret weapons for a handful of djs she’d meet over the following years. still standing the test of time today, they’re now finally seeing a proper release. side-a’s grace invites us into nancy’s world where disco and house collide—the live drums, percussion and bassline hold down a blanket of synth strings and wah-wahs. halfway through this epic enters a piano hook of the highest order, an emotional rush that brings together everything we love on the dancefloor, guaranteed to induce goosebumps. on side-b, she rounds out the release with the dreamlike, percussive and yugo-tinged illustrations & the large, and closes with the title track teen bee, a loopy cowbell-driven dive into the deep, filled with luscious sweeping chords and meandering keys. the esp institute is honoured to close out 2016 (one seriously heavy year) with such a beautiful and cohesive release. thank you and goodnight.

bologna s frank agrario decided to take destiny into his own hands earlier this year, founding micronation records as an outlet for his music. the ladonia ep - named after a disputed micro-nation in southern sweden - is agrario s second missive for the imprint, and features a particularly luscious, amospheric dancefloor roller named after the state s most famous landmark, a sculpture called -nimis-. arguably even better is -i played that track already , a dusty, detroit style deep house cut blessed with a bold cowbell line, sustained chords, and a nagging vocal hook. rick wade provides a deliciously deep and soulful interpretation of that track, while the softly jazzy, broken-house track -lesboa- is also worth a listen.

the next release on paul rip s specimen records is by god of the machine, the brainchild of deep house and techno maestro, derrick thompson a.k.a. drivetrain. the ep kicks of with the original, a powerful slice of jackin tribal techno, its bleeps, tones and chants sitting atop a tight percussive groove that s infectious from the first beat to the last drop. next up comes hijacker s electro workout. its beats are old school yet the attitude is set firmly in the future with its square wave bass line, trippy noises and swooping scikfi pads. santonio echols takes it back to detroit with a simple yet driving tech house rendition containing sublime melodic chords, eerie pads and a hypnotic pad stab that sends tingles up your spine. mr.c finishes with one of his typically infectious acid workouts, where he adds a cheeky bassline, haunting pads and cowbell pings to blend and morph into the twisted effects of a psychoactive substance.

altered moods recordings releases its next vinyl ep octaves of energy. this threetracker by crawley, uk-based artist mick welch is a smooth, sultry adventure into the core ethos of amr music. mick is no stranger to the deep house sound. starting in 2002, he has built a strong following of fans in the uk, first with his elektrosouls mix site and shortly after that with his label of the same name. the -octaves of energy- release represents his latest foray into the deepness. -conscious field- kicks things off with a tambourine- and high-hat infused beat with rich, dark leads burbling up throughout, interrupted now and then by a wistful bridge with an echoing voice telling you not to be afraid. -mind force- is another laid back jam, with a bright, crisp cowbell intertwine with an accouterment of lush pads and silky leads. the final track on the flip side, octave 50, is the deepest cut of the three and also the easiest to work the dance floor with. with its sinewy, filtered pad and bubbly bass line combined with warm, warbling leads, it fits both in the studio and at the club.

robsoul release number 22 for joss moog and mister consistent just keeps rolling out the essential house flavours. ego is his latest collection of work and features four new originals from the frenchman, each with the sample rich touch that we have come to love. the diva licks of the title track and ep opener ego set the perfect funky vibe for the rest of the ep. raw wave sees us riding one, as the beach vibes flow, the keys stab and the chocolatey bassline melts. whos that ramps things up with its jackin action, skittish snare and cowbell, but counters with its smooth keys. a perfect combination. joss closes the party with an ode to a hero. nothing blurred here, just the utmost of respect.

another classic from the west end archives! forrrces keep on dancin from 1982 was a huge record across the board from bronx block parties to the paradise garage in nyc and dj harveys moist nights in london town, its popularity was bolstered by a fierce francois k dub mix on the b-side that stripped the record right back to it s most basic elements with a healthy dose of reverb assisted psychedelia thrown in for good measure! this killer cowbell led boogie jam has always been a big hit with disco freaks and continues to sound fresh some 30+ years later even making its way into veteran uk dj and music historian sean ps 100 boogie essentials 1980-1984 list. high praise indeed!re-mastered from original tape transfers, re-pressed and made available again for 2015 in conjunction with west end records, new york city.

ronald burrell s reputation as deep house royalty has long been solidified throughout the years having released on many legendary labels since the late 80 s including nervous, nu-groove, strictly rhythm & many more. working both solo and alongside his brother rheji his output has always caught the interest and ears of dance music aficionados world-wide with a heady mixture of gospel, soul / r&b, jazz, & garage heavily informing his sound. surprising as it is, -it s a boy- was never released, only ever existing as a test pressing! the 4 track ep takes in all the musical influences listed above and flips them into some seriously deep territory. opener -journey- is an epic jam punctuated by an 808 cowbell, beautiful pads, strings and ronald s voice asking us to join him on a journey through our own minds. second cut -feelin jazzy- picks up the pace a little, a stripped back rhythm blessed with some choice, chopped up jazz samples and vocal stabs keeps things moving in the right direction. over on side-b we are treated to the deepest groove of -bedtime story-, which has all the trademarks of a classic burrell production, soulful vocals, melodies and crisp drum programming. closing track -the crib- rounds things with off with a stomping church inspired organ groove, an up-lifting end to the ep. as mentioned above, this is the very first time this underground house classic has ever been released! this record is a real collectors piece and has commanded collectors prices on-line in the past, a real rarity. it has been re-mastered and re-pressed in conjunction with ronald burrell from his original dat tapes and all original label artwork has been preserved.

on uncanny valley s catalogue number 18 we finally welcome back credit 00 who is a man in charge of a decent collection of those dusty machines we all love. after the ice cold the living room life ep from 2012, his brand new record ice cream is easy to fall in love with. packed with tunes to suit various moods in life, it will be a faithful companion in dark basements or lonesome hours. ice cream starts deliciously with its sleazy sample choice. with the distinctive drum work it builds up to a true chicago-inspired dance floor banger. round n round hits hard with a harsh kick and cowbell action before it shows off slightly melancholic lead synths and a subtle but effective bass line and puts the emphasis on the fact that things go round and round. life s a dizzy affair. east of nowhere with that bass line-sound is credit 00 to the core. and with spooky synths he puts you to an east of nowhere-place where you will lose yourself in manic trance-like dancing. the record ends with red wine , a slightly different electronic love song sung by credit 00. the cover artwork was created by alexander dorn.
