it is that time of the year again for a catch up on all that has been going on at nang towers. for the third instalment of our array series we are chuffed to present a few recent hits, a few future hits and some great tunes we just had to include. the sampler 12 inch takes the more vinyl friendly bits and crams them all onto one cool vinyl.

as nang completes its first two years on the planet things are going pretty well. we are certainly not getting rich in financial terms but the love of the music and plaudits are warming our souls to the core. along the way we have also managed to work with some amazing artists and introduce some mighty-fine new ones to the world so it is with great pleasure that we bring you the 2nd installment of our >array< series. it is a stock-take of the best nang tunes from the past year, some previews on future hits and some tracks we just had to release!

felix da housecat’s esteemed label founders of filth are back with their second release. the label has received an accolade of praise from the industry since their launch was announced on resident advisor back in may. returning with the aphrohead alias, founders of filth volume two is bursting with enlightening verses and impeccable instrumentation. the divine opens the ep with a haunting synthesis and enthralling lyrics. aphrohead leads you down a path of eclectic percussion and that all important kick throughout. an almost space-age xylophone forms the melody of moonrooms hold/release, building up to a frisky array of drums and shakers, propelled by hypnotic, slowed-down vocals. in-house band the foftreal quintet end the labels second ep on a high with i wonfof002t try. an energetic beat structures the groundwork for the label boss and his enthralling backing singers, taking you on a journey with thought-provoking internal monologue. felix stallings has been making his mark on the industry for over thirty years. the detroit-born music veteran has worked with an impressive array of artists over the years and his productions span a wide range of genres from house and techno to trance and nu disco. felix has gone back to basics with his label founders of filth, claiming that no rules apply in the community he has created, it’s about your love for the craft not for the money.

repress - with vocal interplay recalling the temptations’ work with norman whitfield and a jazzy instrumental sophistication equal to the blackbyrds, 100% pure poison certainly deserve the notoriety that their lone recording has garnered them. as a group of american servicemen stationed in germany in the ’70s, it’s amazing that the album was recorded at all. leaving their base using a forged pass, the nine-piece group turned up at a music industry conference looking for a recording deal, and proving that the higher the risk involved, the greater the payoff, they got one with british emi.
although coming right at you was largely overlooked at the time of its release in 1974, it never really faded away, consistently being revived and heralded as much for its rarity as its quality. guitarist and group leader danny leakereturned home to chicago, where he has worked as an engineer and producer with a wide array of artists, including stevie wonder and janet jackson. coming right at you was made widely available again when it was finally reissued by u.k. label soul brother.

entitled -delicious depression-, it s a cohesive array of 8 tracks, ranging from deep house, through nu-disco to full frontal balearic. despite the ironic title, tha album offers a colourful adventure full of unforeseen twists. warm, sampled sounds are enriched by melodic synthlines and deeply detailed sound design. this outstanding production level is not surprising at all, considering that sosky is a rbma alumni (new york 2013, under the name en2ak). his vision of house music may look into the past for inspirations, but the results are fresh, effortless and amazingly contemporary.

matt edwards launches stranger in the night with his first solo material since 2017. the rekids offshoot will release regular music by four artists, namely radio slave, king britt, anthony rother and fred p, who will each drop three eps over the next year. “with rekids being 100% focused on releasing music for dance floors i felt the need to create a new platform to explore a wider musical vision and invite some of my all-time electronic musical heroes to be a part of the series,” says matt edwards. both numbers near the 12-minute mark but each track portrays a different aesthetic. opening with precision drums and crystalline notes, ‘ground control’ makes a nod towards the hi-tech soul sound of detroit and drives forward using a sultry bassline, erratic chords and the occasional icy stab as an array of contrasting sounds operate in unison. on the flip, a syncopated rhythm lays the foundation for ‘last communication’ whilst a tantalising melody joins poignant synths, constructing a profound and hypnotising journey.

aar is a project by milan-based producer, dj and designer giorgio di salvo. the first grade lp is his first record under this name, self-released in collaboration with haunter records, the first chapter in a new series dedicated to tonal and rhythmic experimentation. advanced audio research is the ironic definition of this new music course of his, a nod to the large amount of esoteric studio gear accumulated and (ab)used during the years. the project itself is the result of years of study and experimentation with generative music matrices, based on the application of a three dimensional array of variables and unknowns to algorithmic pattern creation. the result is punishing, close to the most radical exploits in ear-wrenching breakcore, footwork and jungle, albeit with a sonic and structural finesse that reveals the producer’s manic dedication. track a-4 is produced in collaboration with somec and b-01 in collaboration with heith, channeling abstract and melancholic vibes into the project. vinyl comes in ultra ltd. edition of 100 copies, each one wrapped in a different hand-printed folder.

played by charlotte de witte ! bristolian producer daniel pearce, aka eats everything, has unveiled his remix of the timeless u (i got a feeling) by scot project, a release celebrating 25 years of iconic dance label, positiva records. having sound-tracked an array of nights over the last quarter of a century, 2018 marks positiva s anniversary year, with the eats remix preceding their upcoming weekend of shows at ministry of sound as a very special celebration of their 25th anniversary. established in 1993, the label sold a staggering 35 million singles in the uk alone and chalked up 14 #1 singles through the past two-and-a-half decades, with 2018 marking a year of celebration. rolling with a typically infectious bassline, eats latest release exhibits a rumbling bassline kept in check by crisp drum patterns. the ep comes with a box to house all other releases from the anniversary series.

lockjaw introduces his upcoming lp “human research” with the release of the “human research sampler ep” on locked concept. a longtime curator of adroit, technical drum & bass through his locked concept imprint, lockjaw now steps to the foreground, revealing four tracks from his forthcoming album that exemplify a continued dedication to this guiding principle, whilst displaying his expert abilities across an eclectic array of tracks that give a tantalizing taste of what is to come from the full lp.

‘neverending story’ opens with ‘a dimension reflected’ and its introductory mixture of keys and beats. the beat is built upon piece by piece, while slippery synths fill in the upper registers. the second track, ‘planet texture’, opens with a blossoming pad which is soon joined by a steady kick and some bouncing synths. before long an adventurous bassline joins in and puts the track into full groove mode. there’s a twinkling synth floating above it all, sometimes present, sometimes not, making you wonder if you’re really hearing it at all. next up is the first track on the b-side, ‘old problems’. filled with little samples and microsounds, the track uses its beat to push through heady and sometimes disorientating array of colours that swirl across the track. a wide synth enters affairs a third of the way in and helps push the track out onto the dancefloor. ‘neverending story’ comes next, featuring a skittering beat and atmospherics that seem to come from far away. a low bassline pops in and out of the track here and there, while pondersome some keys complete the mood. the ep closes with ‘algorithm’, another scrambled, unpredictable track. the track opens with a rainbow of keys and synths, darting between your ears in their affected manner. an almost glitchy ambient track, it brings to a calm close a fantastic release.

vox populi field works vol.ii is the second part of a broader project entitled ‘field works’, in which the label travels to different locations in the world in order to collect sounds, eventually creating an archive of some of the finest and humblest musical traditions. inspired by academic methods proper to ethnomusicology and ethnography, this project’s aim is to showcase the diversity of our human cultural heritage, which is threatened by accelerated globalization and homogenization of the worldwide musical spectrum.
this record is the result of a twenty-day trip to japan. led by anthropologist and label founder fred scharf and his vox populi records crew, this is the second instalment on the ‘field works’ series. this 12’’ vinyl release is a collection of field recordings, jam sessions, studio recordings, street soundscapes, religious rituals, fighting championships and wedding ceremonies, all of which were remixed and reinterpreted by japan blues, tim karbon, hiroaki oba & shizka (aka inoue shirabe), delivering tracks whose core represents a wide array of traditional japanese sounds.
