mgun is the pseudonym of rising detroit star manuel gonzales. since collaborating with kyle hall as nsnt prjct in 2010, gonzales has developed a uniquely lo-fi sound all of his own, a sound first showcased on his debut solo release which appeared in 2012 on the wild oats imprint. his first release for don’t be afraid will hit stores in october 2012 and is bound to spin heads, demonstrating as it does his particular avant garde take on modern techno, not least the game changing ‘gas chamber’ cut which, at 138 bpm, sounds as at home in bow e3 london as it does in his native detroit.

after the release of his beautifully put together album ‘shining the money ball’ via vancouver’s 1080p earlier last year (which will see a limited vinyl release on lo recordings later this year), as well as having music released through 100% silk, body-san joins the lo family with ‘pacific reasons ep’. having been a part of the new wave of house music to emerge over the past few years from the west coast of america and canada, body-san delivers music with a rich sense of depth, emotive precision and concise instrumentation throughout. brandon knocke (in his own apt description) offers three ‘coastal burners’ through ‘pacific reasons’, with the addition of the majestic interlude ‘liquid entrance’. ‘topaz chalice’ sets us off with the sunset, created through comforting yet strangely ominous chords and vocal melody lines. the track slowly evolves with small percussive flurries, beautiful chord and melody progressions and a smooth, sliding bass line. as pleasant and calming as ‘topaz chalice’ is, we still feel the full force of knocke’s thumping kick, making it as viable for the dance as it is for the cans...

the days are longer and lighter already and that can only mean one thing. summer is on its way… lee burridge and lost desert return with sunshine days in mind on their ‘loopyness’ ep. an apt description indeed for the title track. its infectious groove rolls forward, making you want to get up and wiggle your hips, this track has funk. a live guitar lifts the track halfway through, as stuttered vocals and string-like synth lines take you away to other worlds. over on the other side of the vinyl (or track two for digital fans) is ‘botanic’. another summer daze, groovy, light and airy with a slinky fat bassline and a warm breakdown. music to close your eyes and drift away to, this track has been a firm favourite on all day i dream dance floors since last summer. the ep comes to a close with ‘12cc’ featuring junior. a dubbier groove underpins the whole affair while glass-like melodies and laid back synths sway back and forth. it’s a patient groover that rewards those who take the ride.

flying saucer attack’s self-titled debut album, released in 1993, was commonly known as ‘rural psychedelia’ – an apt description for the rough-hewn soundscapes they crafted. these bedroom recordings made a virtue of the otherworldly, hissy mechanics of four-track cassette-to-vinyl duplication. pearce realised that you didn’t need to layer 16 guitar tracks in an expensive studio to make a big noise. recording directly on to a four-track resulted in a thick, distorted, abrasive sound that suited his needs perfectly.

five years deep into the game, all nine lives fully intact: utrechtian feral feline larry de kat prowls his way onto pets. and we really dont need to tell you how purrrrfectly apt this debut union is. fresh from launching his own katnip imprint (and putting the final touches on a hush-hush disco edit series), pets have managed to prise four of his finest, broadest creations from his creative claws. each one floorbound, each one backing up the hype hes enjoyed from the likes of axel boman, mark e and laurent garnier, each one making us feel like cats who got the creamiest of creams. i know you can hear me’ takes the lead on a more direct tip that you might expect from de kat. big pumps wrapped in a fine vibe balance of detroit and parisian house textures, but done with larrys signature dubby, jacking style, its the perfect paws-sitive statement of intent. slinking deeper into the ep, naakte groove lives up to its nude name with a lean-but-warm bass riff that purrs with finesse around a straight-up strutting drum arrangement. so much fun in such a tight, detailed groove, youll want this on loop forever.amlou stalks up behind with dusty, thumping charm. rolling and scratching like it was 20 years younger, theres an innate physicality in the drums that snaps you out when the big disco hook rides in from nowhere. finally we hit she doesnt. the dubbiest groove of the set, all eyes are on that bulbous sub, rippling synths and precision tuned snare shot. hypnotic, heavy, unhurried and heads down. these sounds are fur real. like all the best stray cats, expect larry to return to pets as and when he pleases.

alek s offers up another dose of pensive techno vibes in his “paradise lost” ep. side a opens up with “bold”, a slice of laid back while still pounding techno, boasting zippy synths with an unmistakable analog flavour. it’s closely followed by andres zacco’s rework of “honey wheat”, an apt reconstruction of the original that’s aimed squarely at the dancefloor. the argentinian producer and recent ilian tape alumni dives in with a powerful groove, cutting its way through a suspended atmosphere full of spaced out sounds. over on the b-side we’re greeted with “paradise lost”, a slow-paced melody that gradually shifts into a dreamy groove filled with spaced out drums and abstract delays. last but not least, the original version of “honey wheat” is a somewhat atmospheric, yet functional floor warmer that fits a resigned groove.

veil of light is the synth/postpunk solo project of a mystery man from zurich known to the wider world only as m. the project was born in 2012 when all the tracks for the veil of light eponymous 2013 ep released on belaten were recorded by m in a bunker near zurich. that last fact incidentally is a good way to describe the music released under this project’s name much like the mental image of a bunker it is cold dark and forces one into a contemplative resigned state. the influences that immediately come to mind listening to veil of light are 1980’s wave music post punk industrial and dark ambient all weaved together by an overarching depressive yet dreamy atmosphere. it has been called gothgaze and the description seems apt. the followup to the opener the 7” cold skin single released on edition gris and the debut lp simply titled as well as this years head/blood/chest ep continue in the same vein.

marcel vogel s lumberjacks in hell label shows no signs of slowing as it ramps up a killer new salvo from debutant artist c scott. -climb on- is an uptempo workout to capture the absolute peak of the party in the funkiest of ways, while -hands free- provides an apt alternative with its slow, organ-led whimsy. disco remains the backbone of the sound here, whatever tempo the track rolls at and wherever it may head. -stuttering- demonstrates this perfectly with its heavily treated, head-spinning fx still capturing that classic good-time mood, while -at ease- finishes on a life-affirming canter of rhodes led celebration.

culled over the naïve bedroom sessions of early university, “chillax” is akin to blaring an extra hot mixtape from a junky deck in your car on your way to cape canaveral to see the last space shuttle leave earth, all while trying to speed run kirby’s dream land on your sister’s gameboy color.
heavy sampling tends to drive this jeep and give it some character, many popular/unknown gems lifted from various dusty tapes and wax procured from thrift stores and vinyl throughout northern florida, cheap drum machines are clumsily slammed against it all and keep everything in a familiarly dance-y zone, while amateur chords and melodies are provided via guitar center synths and youtube ripped commodore 64 blips and stabs (note the cheeky nintendo voices as outliers). a fusion of analog discoveries and pixelated memories (melded together by the relentless florida heat), its an apt soundtrack for long and wistful road trips.

constantly turning around itself, the winding melody of vertere turns outward and inward at the same time, bringing the listener on a journey outward while mirroring a simultaneous labyrinthine journey inward. like the word itself, vertere, with its roots in the latin word verto (which itself takes its roots in the earlier sanskrit word, vartayati) it signifies the very nature of change itself. it means both to turn and reflect inward and yet also move forward — a call to action for setting in motion new things. a paradox at first glance but also perhaps a surprisingly accurate description of the destructive and reconstructive nature of creation. an apt metaphor for this bright new collaboration between established life and death artists mind against and the new artist project of federico maccherone, aka somne. on remix duties, when you have an artist of the caliber of tobias freund, you don t need to ask for anything more and with his outstanding remix of vertere he very clearly shows why. this long time mainstay of the electronic music scene has managed to stay not just relevant but on the cutting edge longer than most with respected releases on some of the most seminal imprints to be putting out music in the world of underground dance music. with vertere he takes what s already top quality material and somehow manages to turn it inward and in his own unique way elevate it to another level entirely. with a relentless beat and a sonic force that is hard to describe with mere words the tobias. remix of vertere comes out of the gate like a runaway machine rapturously drunk on its own self awareness. it marches ever forward, full of fervor, and will surely be driving dance floors both large and small to the euphoric edge of the ecstatic state.

a labour of love and friendship, the camila ep contains two finely-worked originals. the slow, loping, scratchy jnd is a collaboration with close friend jürgen von krebs that brings to mind stl and theo parrish in its interlocking simplicity and off-key accents. ricky g. (soulmate mix) is a smoother, more wistful glide, paying tribute to the lady in st. josephs life. finally, giegling-affiliated dreamer edward provides his own psychedelic take on jnd, twisting the synth line through a battery of live percussion samples and analog bass. dusty, wonky, raw, musical – words synonymous with the great 3 chairs, but totally apt for describing st. josephs growing discography on lisbon-based imprint assemble music. vinyl only.

apartment returns with a release exploring 3 facets of house music all inter-connected by the vocals of uk soul & rnb singer, greg blackman (bbe music). steve leggets (four hands, claremont 56) original believe mix, the catalyst for the project, is an expansive 10 minute-plus journey through wistful dub lead by blackmans soaring vocals. on the flip mark hand (signals from the north) delivers a re-working, sculpting a beautiful, sun-kissed masterpiece featuring drums and percussion by darren moore alongside hands inspired playing on the rhodes and moog. to close out the release ncw finally makes a return to apt and subsequently gets lost in the dmz pitching and twisting blackmans vocals over a pulsating, bumping house banger.

hand stamped and numbered, strictly limited to 320 copies. osiris music uks thirty seventh release *open water versions* sees the label taking an innovative, almost open-source approach to what could be a more conventional remix project, with four artists contributing their own unique perspectives to one anonymous track. the eps opening salvo comes courtesy of killawatt, who brings a dense combination of driving force and technical intricacy whilst ipman imbues his version with urgent percussion and sense of cavernous tension. the second half of the release sees the debut of osiris music label owner simon shreeves mønic project, the pummelling, cinematic sounds of which providing apt counterpoint to the staggered, churning techno of metrists version which rounds up the ep. early support from laurent garnier, eomac, bas mooy and paul mac.

it is a family affair as grimy returns with heat from the windy city known for amazing dance edits. tim mcallister takes it out the gate with *rollin*, a classic soul/disco beater replete with joyous flute trills, leslie speaker efx and a pumping house kick. in-demand newcomer cratebugs *get up move your body* is a spacious, cosmic edit of a little-remembered canadian gem. the song ends with an intuitive synth jam that will be enjoyed by djs and home listeners alike. longtime grimy associate rahaan ends things with a bang. his largely original *buari traxx* mixes ghanaian rhythms with killer disco bass and the nuanced, tracky drum programming you could find on a dancemania record. the brilliant track is built for the floor and also serves as an apt transition into grimy trax, a sister label that will release all new music. chicago is still burning.

atlanta-based helix expands on the techno/grime hybridity hinted at on his hit drum track 12 inch with the newest instalment of night slugs club constructions series. it is apt that some of the original material shortlisted for this release was lost to the digital tides, subsequently having to be restored or rebuilt in night slugs london studio during a visit by helix in late 2012.

following on from his long awaited album ku:palm in november of last year, we now see its lead track pyramid get a vinyl release on photeks own label, photek productions. the eastern instrumentation and spacey beats may not be apt for every dance floor, but for fans of modus operandi era photek, pyramid is an essential tune. on the flip we have oshun, another track from ku:palm this time remixed by beneath, a producer that began making waves last year with a series of 12 inches on his own label, no symbols and a cracking mix for fact mag. he has gone on to release the illusions ep on dusk & blackdowns keysound recordings, as well as a 12 inch on pinchs influential tectonic recordings. mixing the darkest elements of funky, dub and syncopated grime with a distinctly uk edge, beneaths complex layered beats result in a truly unique sound that is a perfect matched to remix fellow experimentalist photek. a young producer that clearly knows his shit, beneath is a breath of fresh air.

for its 35th release, be as one continues to keep its unique trademark sound, and this time the israeli imprint has looked in its own backyard to find the goods. magit cacoon, dj and producer, tel aviv born and berlin resident, and popsled, israeli duo composed of guy astrogano and niv konforty land on be as one with higher point, which brings a classic house mood on the dance floor, with its very hypnotic vocal, the big bassline and driving groove. greek house star argy is an apt remixer for this type of track and indeed, no surprise he delivers a storming remix that again hints a lot to the classic sounds of house and techno. detroit legend rolando closes the package with his techno takes on the tune, a rather hypnotic version, bass infected and driven by rolandos trademark drums patterns.

after releasing some cross-eyed dance floor burners on district of corruption, little helpers and bar25, pablo roman alcalá aka beaner brought some seriously sexy bent grooves over to brooklyn for those ever lasting late night benders. his first ep for thema was a dark and tangled ode to the drug-addled prose of author, denis johnson, which was well received by a slew of various deranged djs. this time he returns to stake his place on the dance floor with four deep, fractured after-hours jams. the name mixed doubles is apt, as youll find the pairings of unlikely elements on these tracks aligning nicely… before they are slowly pried apart. of course, thats when things truly get interesting
