die nullerjahre des 21. jahrhunderts verbrachte er nach eigenen angaben in einem selbst gew?hlten exil als >would-be folksinger<. lloyd cole, zusammen mit den commotions oder eben solo seit mitte der 80er-jahre eine feste gr®?e im internationalen popzirkus, sehnte sich nach dem spiel mit der band, nach ein wenig rock n roll. die songs dazu hatte er bereits, das geld dazu besorgte er sich von den fans: circa 1000 von ihnen waren bereit, 45 dollar f?r eine de-luxe-version eines albums zu ?berweisen, das von eben diesem geld erst noch eingespielt werden musste. cole rekrutierte eine studioband aus alten und neuen bekannten, u. a. joan wasser alias joan as police woman sowie mark schwaber und matt cullen von coles begleittrio the small ensemble. das ergebnis nennt sich >broken record< und ist das frischste und lebendigste klangerzeugnis, das von lloyd cole seit jahren zu h®ren war. man merkt dem album an, wie gut cole das zusammenspiel mit der band tut, die songs sind auf gewohnt hohem niveau. aus dem would-be folksinger wurde wieder der s?nger einer rock-n-roll-band.

on this 12 inch k’alexi is dropping the poetic smooth voice over the remixes of “you are” ov takes it into the jazzy feel with sublime bass and chord structure as we are used to from him. fluffy sounds and smooth backround vocal stabs that makes you want to replay it after it’s finished. maurice joshua is bumping you out your seat with his energetic samba house flavor mix of “you are . this track is right in the middle and can be played in a techno room as well. norman chung is discovered by k’ alexi and provides a supersolid mix-edit of k’s original. words keys and rhythm are dominating the track. flawless production make this a great contribution to this ep. k’ alexis dub mix is uptempo tech-soul-house and will be easily picked up by the techno dj as it is a great tool. echoing “you are’s” floating around and drives you into a haunting synth soundscape.

in the world of factory presets, default settings and copy-paste ethics, there are few artists that actually care to make a difference. and -who told you that?-, 29th release on warsaw recognition label, is certainly a voice to be heard. the title track is another subtle narrative from label boss jacek sienkiewicz. eerie chord and a solid, damp beat from the start are underpinned by sherds of dialogue - snippets of words and laughter keep coming back in the mix, providing some sort of uneasy commentary towards todays minimal house formula. but at some point the voices disappear - and then the tracks gently goes somewhere outside the boundaries of todays club music, somewhere otherworldly. this shift, albeit amazingly subtle, is a leap towards music free of any defined context, far beyond dancefloor and definitely original. if this sneak peak into the possible futures of manmachine induced visions is too much to handle, there is still the b-side of this release. two tracks here - both clocking around mere 5 minutes - are prime exercises in compact, clever, tight and efficient club tools. uplifting -cobalt drive- is bound to to be quoted and reworked into many forms of a late-night burner. patefon, on the other hand, is a peak-time stormer with its stuttering chords and moody samples, supposedly picked from some vintage shellac discs
