after a slew of acclaimed 12 inch eps and a string of cd compilations and albums, darkroom dubs prepare to cut their first lp to wax, which comes from portuguese newcomer pedro aguiar. brimful of spectral intensity, aguiars * landscapes and heartbreaks* is an uninhibited package of field recordings and otherworldly tones that stay close to the aesthetic darkroom dubs fans hold dear and also inaugurate the labels landmark step into the world of long play records.

for some it might be kraftwerk, but for me, my favourite electronic pioneers are probably australias severed heads. they were so far ahead of the game that they had to invent a lot of the technology they used. inspired, playful, never boring and always sonically brilliant they pushed at the frontiers of electronic music more than most. by the late 80s they were pursuing a slightly more polished course and made a series of records that had the potential to reach a much larger audience. possibly because of their name they never quite managed that, but they had several big club hits, the dub versions of which crossed over into the nascent house scene. i am honoured that i am able to make the dubs of those three 12 inches from 1988 - 1990 available again.

upwellings is vincent raude, a professor of modern art at the academy of brest who has been releasing dub and reggae music since 1996 and has written music for contemporary dance and theater. he created his dub project lower groundz in 2004 where he experimented with reggae and in 2008 started his dub techno project upwellings under which he realized several 1s. his music was supported and charted by people like cio d or, laurent garnier, alexkid and more. upwellings music shows a great deal of recording knowledge and love for the details of electronic music. his a-side track zu zurich has a classic dub techno surface but we believe the skillful complexity on many levels will have us listen to this track many many times. there are things to discoverin >zurich< one might say. so it is no surprise that the flip side track >lower ground< shows more reggae influences which he uses in more abstract ways, employing vocal splinters he masterfully embeds in his recording.

2013 saw silicone soul celebrating the 10th anniversary of their darkroom dubs imprint. launched in glasgow back in 2003, the drd stamp has become a mark of quality and seen many established names exploring deeper realms whilst also unearthing fresh and exciting global talent.

busking really is next-level in berlin, with the acoustic guitar replaced by the laptop, drum machine and minimoog, all powered by a car battery. it was this thrown together setup that first introduced the world to skinnerbox as iftah gabbai and olaf hilgenfeld took their leftfield, jazzy attitude and improvised genre-bridging music to the streets of berlin for impromptu jam sessions. it wasnt long before skinnerbox were rocking the floors of ritter butzke and wilde renate and getting their music pressed to the black gold was surely the next step...
