if you re going to beat em down, you need the right tools. on the label s second release, grimy trax has given you a couple hammers. the a-side, dejay cease s the fixer is straight chicago. we re talking banging 909 funk that might be found buried on a particularly unhinged ron hardy mix. a simple bass line and two notes of acid are all it takes to make the floor go wild. this is functional heat with enough atmosphere to engage the mind, body and soul. on the b-side, rising chicago son boogienite proves he s earned the hype. boy, ok is an instant classic thanks to some recognizable disco strings and a funky escalator of a bassline. the producer uses a trippy, rubberband synth which eventually turns into rhythmic, teasing vocal. the mixdown is ridiculous, especially as the lengthy track passes the halfway mark. boogie brings the bassline in and out in between beautiful ambient rhodes and a call and response male and female vocal. those strings hit again and you feel no pain.

khandoits hypnotic 100 bpm stomp does not adhere to genre or fickle trends, it simply bangs. the track begins with a sturdy kick and piano glissandos which recall alice coltranes most transportative work. as the beat picks up, a creeping, filtered arpeggio enters its journey between rhythmic and downright nasty serving as the track s primary drama. its a stunning intro to the new label grimy trax, a musical chameleon that can be dropped at the beginning, middle or end of the night. to complement the epic a-side, grimy returns to the endlessly talented midwest and emerges with lulu, an original track by deejay/edit ace bruce ivery. the track seamlessly combines the chicago acid sound with the clever vocal sampling of early 90s nyc house. the result is pure peak-time heat. towards the end of the track, ivery arranges brief melodic elements into a propulsive disco facsimile. this unexpected turn summarizes the philosophy of the new label and the way this small group of artists selects and makes records. it doesnt matter if its house, disco, or techno, just make it grimy!

dark entries flashes back to the grimy streets of new york city circa 1982 to bring us an unreleased album from cult outfit ike yard. comprised of stuart argabright, michael diekmann, kenneth compton, and fred szymanski, ike yard sits between the sinewy proto-body music of the neue deutsche welle and the shattered grooves of their no wave peers in new york.

vinyl only , after a short break unison wax returns with a brand new four-track collection of music from the bossman himself, diego krause. the berliner took a year off in 2016, concentrating on other projects and letting the label have a rest, but now he’s back with a refined sound. unison wax embodies a more sophisticated aesthetic, with warm analogue hues and subtle textures to push things forward a little. after all, we couldn’t come back from a break without progressing, huh?! first out of the blocks is ‘nihilate’, which helps introduce this updated unison wax sound, crisp beats lock us into a groove in conjunction with a dainty selection of analogue effects and a funky little b-line. diego carefully adds new elements as the track progresses, keeping you interested right until the end. next is the title track, ‘rituals’, which kicks off with an insistent bassline and spellbinding percussion that keeps you gripped from the off. he throws in some claps to add energy and muted pads, which slowly rise to prominence, giving the track an emotive atmosphere which wraps itself around you. one for the eternal dreamers… flip the record over for side b and ‘dysfunction’, which turns things grimy. marauding beats and bass conspire to create a morose atmosphere. diego’s penchant for super sharp beats is present here again, and the energy builds slowly but surely. a new layer creeps in every few bars and sucks you right into the track’s lair. expertly done, and impossible to resist, this is darkside pressure at its best. ‘eudaimonia’ rounds things off, with more deep grooves. initially propelled by minimal percussion, the track really gets going when more beats are added. it maintains a laid back feeling and, while the drums are solid, the atmosphere is mostly quite soft with swirling pads keeping things light in the top end. when they fall away towards the end of the track we have a rather gnarly close to the composition, as the beats and bass take over. and there it is, the welcome return of unison wax – smooth and refined for 2017…

multi-talent joyce muniz is definitely one to look out for. initially starting her career as a vocalist, she now took over the global house music scene within no time as a deejay and producer as well. exhibiting her talent with previous releases, its not surprising that shes on the roster of prestigous labels such as exploited records and 20/20 vision recordings. next year she will release her single toxic people on international deejay gigolo records featuring the singer, songwriter and producer demetr1us. toxic people is a vibrant and raw sounding electro house cut featuring grimy synths and vocals, that lend the track a cold and distant atmosphere. the artwork for toxic people was created by leipzig-based artist silvia trost, whose forth lies in oil and acrylic paintings. she now frequently collaborates with glitch art artists and loves to mix materials and techniques, both analogue and digital. the b-side dreamz is another great production by joyce muniz. the playful groove and eclectic ambient makes it a cool package.

helena hauff s mighty return to disorder is back with a various artists 12inch packing phasers set to slay. lft is as evil as it gets on flare, dropping the kind of sleazy, bunker-ready, acid inflected electro that darkroom dreams are made of. marc ash has an edgier tone, maximising the distortion but also capitalising on uneasy space in the mix on grimy workout beirut calling. morah sends things in an airy direction on cold water, building up layers of noise but maintaing a strange air of optimism. hauff herself lands the b2 slot with a curious belter that channels the spirit of 90s midi game soundtracks amidst searing arepggios and a bloated kick.

new deeptrax release by g.w. hailing from london. this is the new fifth deeptrax ep from the mysterious ruffien. immensely diverse sounds from the caverns of south-east london. hypered house, dungeonesque taped techno, dirty filthy electro and lo-fi dubby idm, all combined with that delicate grimy touch.

folding citys debut on through these eyes is charged with exerting drum rhythms and high-energy movement throughout. the a-side enthralls with psychedelic string plucks and silky smooth, even trance-inducing arrangement. livid percussive movements, powdered with delays and tribal grooves, are creatively used - as well as haunting, emotive pads. ‘museling’ is a different beast to witness, starting off with hypnotic arpeggios and taunting, grimy vocals, anticipating the impact. swift hi-hats race along an intensely stomping bass-line, pervaded with gritty but fluid motion - resulting in extraordinarily energetic music. the two-sided single elegantly shares the same signature sound, each track complementing the other.

with his new release the polish transatlantyk sails into - as yet uncharted - waters of the lol- fi breakbeat house scene to bring you the debut of dj stoner dad. not much is known about the man behind the nickname, except that he is a dj, a dad and that he likes getting his hits from the bong on during the infamously long warsaw afterparties. the -raw romantics ep- showcases his own take on the deeply saturated, smokey and breakbeat-infused house genre. fake strings is a certified banger alluring the dancefloor with a great combo of rolling bass, squashed kicks and hats, grimy, atmospheric pads and a bits of spoken word thrown in. magic phunk brings that break again and for a good measure. drums are floating over an ocean worth of blazing pads, liquid synths, acid riffs, pillowy, yet dirty chords and whatever else dj stoner dad could lay his hands on at the time. iv is a full frontal ambient jam, with little bits of wandering drums coming into the picture at the very end. finally v brings cinematic influences over slightly uneasy slow groove.

this guy leibniz is back on rat life records. you might remember him from the collaboration with credit 00 on basement toolz volume ii. this time he goes for a full solo ep. the three course menu consists of a grimy appetiser called -bat-, if your stomach can handle this, we serve -uzi- as a main course, a whole round of bullets, very hard to digest. -2 simple- is for dessert, again quite heavy, full of fat and definitely not gluten-free.

theo parrish teams up with amp fiddler on -ghetto proposal- - a deep grimy chugger of a track featuring vocals from kitten koroi and john douglas on trumpet. instrumental version on the flip.

escorting sarah hit the ground running with ‘elephant in my box’, its low slung cavernous kick drum making a serious statement of intent before the the track’s grimy synth pushes forth to serve up some deliciously sleazy warehouse vibes. ‘pov’ ups the dirt considerably, metallic shards of phunk permeate, their edges rubbed raw with distortion whilst ‘spank’ offers up a sleeker, but no less deadly, slab of techno weaponry.

downfall theory embarks on a new chapter as it hosts a full release from a producer other than its owner, sanys. myztical isn’t exactly a newcomer though, and the ukrainian producer has already two releases to his credit on nicz records. given the title of his debut on downfall theory, it is no surprise to learn that myztical is using it as a means to question reality. inspired by the science fiction writer philip k dick and decades of electronic music, he certainly succeeds on venturing into uncharted territories on the title track. muffled, repetitive vocal samples, an atonal rhythm and relentless, slightly distorted kicks show that quite often, simplicity is the most potent ingredient. on “faith of our fathers”, myztical disappears farther down the wormhole. splintered rhythms, deranged howls and a deranged filter push his vision for broken beat techno into the abyss. “substance d” sees the ukrainian hotshot return to a more linear approach, pounding kicks underpin ghostly shrieks before a breakdown sees the track descend into grimy, woody mcbride-style acid. the accompanying vocal sample, the embodiment of a bad trip, only serves to accentuate the track’s darkly hallucinogenic qualities. finally, there’s “shifted realities” - it revisits the jagged filters of “faith of our fathers”, but does so against the backdrop of a pounding industrial kick and a grungy, low-slung rhythm.

uk techno veteran broom is one of the most consistent producers in the game and on neon, he delivers four killer dance floor tracks. inspired in equal parts by the swirling, dub techno of chain reaction and the insistent, loopy techno of mid to late-90s jeff mills, the release starts with the steel-plate percussion and churning chord builds of -m19-. broom keeps his focus on that approach for -energy-, where doubled-up claps and clanging chords create an eerie but urgent sensibility, while the title track is a slightly less visceral affair thanks to the inclusion of a sleepy vocal sample amid the churning keys. finally, -involver- sees broom focus his energies elsewhere, its acidic, grimy groove coming across like steve bicknell in a bad mood.

no tag no food’ is the third 12-inch from philadelphia-based artist m//r (magnetic resonance) and his first on details sound. after releasing 2014’s well-received ‘gathering response data ep’ on great circles imprint and a single on ron morelli’s l.i.e.s., m//r is back with a strong bundle of four tracks, steadily making his mark on the scene of contemporary techno. this record is a proper electronic weapon, from the slowed down pounding impulse of total burner ‘no tag no food’ to the suspended rhythm of atmospheric idyll which brings the listener into a gravity-free dimension.

who better to inaugurate your label than andreas gehm? simple, no-one. glasgow’s schrodinger’s cat is sinking claws and teeth into vinyl with five tracks of blistering tb303 goodness from the cologne man. mr gehm is in fine form as he serves up a quintet of very different cuts. from the warbling wonderment of -blind eyes- to squawking darkness of -jak the floor-, this ep shows how talented this machine musician is. -can you hear me girl- is jilted lover, stalker house, beady eyes peering into misted windows material. the elec pt 1 hood is donned for the dirtiest track of the 12inch. grimy claps are further polluted by bending acid lines in a work overflowing with violence. out of the leftfield comes the finale. -systems go- throbs with rumbling rhythms, a bleeped melody keeping time as drum machines overheat and circuitry melts. mean as ever from andreas gehm. expect tears.

sleeper cell is the new collaboration between earthen sea and lovers rock label head ital. recorded over three days and nights in a dark ny winter, * quality of life* reflects a declining america in a winter of its own. corroded dub atmospheres, haunting melodies, subdued flashes of tenderness and occasional searing noise swim together like murky oil in a puddle of grimy water on the side of the road. opening with the entrancing * initiate* , * sleeper cell* welcome the listener into their world, where menacing whispers dance and echo around synth swells and a poignant lead melody. from there, the duo journey through a crumbling and eerily spacious sound world.

when diamond district dropped in the ruff on mello music group in 2009, the gritty drums and grimy raps combined as elementally as hydrogen and oxygen. the d.c. voltron of oddisee, yu, and x.o. dusted off and revitalized a sound once consigned to the catacombs. hailed as an instance classic, its impact reverberated throughout the underground and mainstream. the washington d.c. city paper called it the citys best album in many years. during an era when lyricism was deemed too intellectual and samples too dated, diamond district overturned conventional logic. they preserved the raw and made it righteous. a half-decade later, the holy trinity has returned with march on washington. the truths remain timeless. wisdom over rhythm. slang turned into testament.

ts7, fresh from reworking singles for afrojack and tulisa, presents >grade a<, a colourful basssline number. in what will be his first vinyl outing since 2008, ts7 utilises his 4x4 roots, working a clever looping bass to perfection with some neat vocal sampling to give it bags of dancefloor swagger. complimented by a heavyweight remix package, >grade a< certainly packs a punch. remixes come from hyperdubs walton and mista mens mella dee. walton delivers an incredible grimy rework, culminating in a series of earshattering breakdowns and some fantastic synth work that draws comparisons with some of wileys early productions. mella dee, meanwhile, moves away from his 8-bar sound as heard in coyotes debut release >ctrl<, and looks to house for inspiration with >grade a< receiving a thorough rework in that vibe. full of the sounds more familiar with his mista men productions but packing more of a grimy punch, mellas remix is a surefire dancefloor favourite.

morgan zarates second release for hyperdub is a bold and unexpected move for him. he has been known in the past as the producer for leftfield soul group spacek and also currently as one half of the shining, signed to xl records, but with >broken heart collector< he has made some highly contagious dubstep pop, featuring rising singer / songwriter / producer stevie neale on vocals. stevie warns of a guy who is the titular >broken heart collector<. her rnb vocals contrast with a fierce storm of drums and vertiginous synths that attack like waves against rocks. it is a brilliant pop song, with a chorus earworm you might find hard to resist. there is also an instrumental included as well. the third track is >crey bey<, an energetic, grimy 8 bar instrumental. it shifts between dive-bombing synths and a spooked, nervous melody over a rich organ track, with martial kicks and snares guaranteed to get you bouncing.
