repress - ive never met rod modell (deepchord) in person, but we have met through music. he found an obscure cassette of chi music (from 86), sent it to astral industries and paved the way for the release (30 years later) of the original recordings in 2016. since then, weve exchanged ideas and good music. i sent rod a preview of the kallikatsou recordings - he really liked it - and here came the idea for a remix of lanterns. i started working on some random, lo-fi samples from youtube, using audacity, perhaps the simplest way of producing loops and samples. it’s the only computer based system that feels like the tape recorders i used to work with. i sent the first sketches to rod on facebook, but they ended up in the wrong inbox. i forgot about them, but months later he came back saying he loved them. i decided to go back to working on them, maintaining the lo-fi approach. i began manipulating the samples: time-stretching, tempo and pitch-shifting, mixing different layers and adding old-school monophonic old speaker effects, delays and loops. i used a few field recordings, voices and samples from my early ambient cassettes, and they matched. ario from astral industries got involved and the experiment turned into a plan a vinyl release - red lantern at the kallkatsou.

repress - after a sell-out ep by rahaan in the spring, dublin label fatty fatty phonographics returns to the home of house with two murky 21st century excursions aimed straight at dark n sweaty dancefloors.

2020 repress !! about the bamboo recordings: jacobus derwort started exploring sonic soundscapes listening to his short-wave world receiver at the age of 12. there he would hear music from africa, china, japan, indonesia, south america and beyond. he started playing guitar, piano, percussion and saxophone. he met hanyo van oosterom in 1978 and they started the legendary cult rock band, the jones . derwort was playing the sax, van oosterom the drums. they started conducting sound experiments in hanyo’s small cellar in the dutch village of krimpen aan den ijssel. in the early eighties they made their first cassette, the kallikatsou . hanyo started the ambient collective chi in 1983. jacobus was the first musician to join chi. together, they went to the magic rock “the kallikatsou” on the island of patmos, greece. here, hanyo had stayed for months in a cave for some deep soul-searching. he heard the sound of chi in the silence of the night like a message from out of space. being together at the kallikatsou they shaped the foundation of chi, making handmade flutes from local bamboo and conducting field recordings of water, crickets, owls, goats, wind, etc...

ltd 2020 repress - 250 copies only - chi started in the late punk years in the early eighties. a time of change and mind-blowing albums. we started doing sound experiments in an old farm in moordrecht (thanks to jan van rhee and kees van der veer). in the summer, all the doors and windows were open, birds flew in and out. in the distance we saw the highway to rotterdam. in the winter we sat close together, no heating, only blankets, candles and brandy.

the true definition of a “rare-groove”, “windy city theme” is a triumphant, funky paean to the spiritual home of the blues, jazz and house music. often closely guarded by the rare record cognoscenti this scarce 45 on the chi sounds label was originally released in 1976 and became a solid staple of london’s underground rare-groove scene, finding favour with dj’s like norman jay and giles peterson with the track even appearing on their groundbreaking “journeys by dj” mix. b-side cut “show me the way” is not to be overlooked either, a smooth, stepping soul number with lush orchestration and yearning vocals featuring the amazing arrangements of the chi-sound orchestra, sounding like a beautiful cross between mfsb and marvin gaye. an utterly essential 45 for any serious soul or funk fan, legitimately repressed and remastered with love on dinked 45 for 2016.

what a year 2014 was for us as a label. starting with the release of my lifer concluded ep, featuring incredible producers addison groove, fur coat, livio & roby and maetrik. later in the year we went on to release one of the most explorable and rewarding projects we have been involved in as a label wolfgang haffner the remixes. a 6 track ep with some of the biggest names in electronic music, ricardo villalobos, nightmares on wax, acid mondays, max loderbauer and myself. with the success of the remixes we knew we would have to release another strong ep to follow. myself and rockets & ponies are proud to bring you our ?rst release of 2015: acid mondays, chi ka pasa .

richard rogers black booby re-edits return with bb07, which sees chi-town original and ron hardy protégé gene hunt - a black booby veteran from bb04 - digging out more vintage dat dopeness on the double-a-side, which features raw-as-hell analogue house workout *1015* (a take on the dion & tony track from his chicago dance tracks collection on rush hour back in 2011) alongside the very aptly-named (and appropriately drum-fuelled) *dr roland*. meanwhile on the b-side you will hear uk house music og terry farley sharing production duties with another 90s house veteran, stuart stretch silvester. *play house* (original mix) is a synth-heavy jacking houser with serious dancefloor intent, plus check out the kklassik mix by another chi-town don, k alexi shelby, who chases the original headlong down a dark alley littered with emotive samples and thumping keys.
