in 1972 francois de roubaix and bernard maitre composed together the music of a tv series for children presented by puppets, called the onix. the musical oddity here released by weme records is a part of this ost. this piece of music demonstrates once again that francois de roubaix was in touch with all kinds of music of his time, including contemporary music. in this experimental track we can feel the influences of the composer pierre henry, an other explorer of unknown sounds. on the b side jodey kendrick makes his own interpretation of this music with current tech and sounds while keeping the atmosphere and fantasy of the original sound. attention non music !

embracing disco, techno and house music in all its declinations, what ever not introduces now british artist reformed society, project started by house producer harsh puri as a consequence of djing and collecting records since 1998, debuting with a four track old school house ep, optimistic chaos coherently fitting with the italian imprint philosophy. ‘hope’ has that solar, yet dusty groove folding distorted rhythmics and joyful pads around an insistent lead dubby pattern and shimmering synths. ‘optimistic chaos’ is again smooth but lightly gloomy, until a pause intoxicates one’s body and mind filling them with inebriating ambients. ‘incognito’ delivers a deep driving atmosphere here, featuring dogged, crisp drums together with minimalist, yet momentary cosmic motives. for the closing cut ‘detracid’, the artist cooks up a brew of acid lines with the usual charming synths and vivid hats, building a light sense of tension fired up by the warm, heady sound scapes. each track is similar to the last, stiffening the musical timbre of the label, confirming the producer’s strong artistic identity as a consequence.

with a passion for disco, italo, chicago house and detroit techno patrizio cavaliere aka rocco universal has been collecting music for the last two decades and it’s these musical influences that have shaped his raw, tripped out disco/house production sound. ‘tiny islands’, his debut release for leng, is a real melting pot of rich melodies over a thick baseline and is a clear example of rocco’s passion for the dancefloor. with something as multi layered and deep as the original track it needed ray mang to add his trademark sound to the remix. here he goes straight for the jugular drawing out some of the loops and percussion leaving no mistake as to when this should be dropped on the dancefloor.
curitiba-based aia records returns with it s second release. lucas and marcelo also known as doneck, started to join forces back in early-2013. musically influenced by international recognised artists such as san soda, andré,,s and move d, the duo also found significance in the sounds of aia s own label heads aninha & antonela antonela giampietro. therefore, creating a mixture of three soulful, deep but endlessly sounding tracks seems very convincing and credible to the overall ethos of the imprint. with assaz the duo delivers a deep but soulful house number, whereas ocluso is deep house at it s best, with a light atmospheric vibe and the echoing vocal. last but not least, tê,,nue creates this feeling of weightlessness and ease with warm natural added sounds and it s groovy bassline.

second release for patrick gibin aka twice and his ‘collective blends’ project which includes musicians from his home town verona - italy : for this release the collective invited special guest clara hill on vocals. the raw hypnotic moog bassline together with the brazilian influenced hi-hats and rhythms of the title track “time goes by” build a solid atmospheric groove elevated by clara hills’ vocals, that give the track that unique soulful swing. on the flip, volcov’s spaced out dub version of “time goes by” is as deep as it gets and the third track, phanareega, keeps the energy high with its combination of live acoustic/electronic drums, sharp bassline and anthem strings.

the album is a soundtrack of music inspired by the movie rubble kings and is out globally via mass appeal records. produced by longtime run the jewels collaborator little shalimar, the album features appearances from bun b, ghostface killah, killer mike, tunde adebimpe, mr muthaf*kin exquire, boldy james, cuz lightyear, ka and roxiny, in addition to run the jewels. scoring the film was the first time little shalimar set out to make period music. half of the music on this album was taken directly from the score and is heavily indebted to ‘60s and ‘70s soul and funk music. for the new tunes shalimar sampled joints from the score and created new beats out of them.

in the space of two short years shlømo has quickly established himself alongside the likes of marcelus, bambounou, francois x and the antinote records crew as a key figure in paris’ current techno generation. having established his own taapion records label in 2013 and built a roster around a core of local producers including roman poncet, pvnv and antigone, in addition to enlisting stephen brown, conforce and sterac as remixers for the label’s releases so far. for its fifth release, bright sounds - run by fellow parisian kennedy smith - revisits last year’s rechaïm ep (bsrx003), with a trio of remixers offering their own takes on shlømo’s established deep and expansive sound. first up is the aforementioned 50 weapons artist bambounou, who offers a dynamic groove-based version of the title track that bounces along an elastic kick drum with cut-up fragments of the original’s atmospheric pads providing further impetus. label owner kennedy smith takes on theory is the worst by bringing its dub textures to the for while filling the track’s empty spaces with intricate drum patterns. finally, italian techno pioneer donato dozzy turns grounded queen into a classic dozzy slow-burning techno trip, with his trademark layered sound complimenting the track’s subtle rhythmic backbone.

audiard’s expertise in sourcing non-western samples has been consistently documented by blank slate. with this release, he brings the international influence of his compositions to the forefront. rather than utilizing samples as building blocks in a typical dance music structure, audiard has opted for the nuanced approach of crafting his compositions around the samples. the result is a symbiotic relationship in which he delivers a new context for his carefully selected sounds.
“volna” is an uncompromising and unadulterated approach to techno. the ominous “olga” intertwines desolate synthpads with a raw acid sound while the metallic abrasiveness of “drawner” constitutes a glowing tribute to industrial music. “signal” is a more aerial iteration of infinite fields’ techno with its chimerical melodies.

repress ... it s been a busy 3 years since danny berman aka red rack em released on his own bergerac imprint. since then he s toured relentlessly, released a whole album of live music based disco/punk funk for sonar kollektiv as hot coins, managed to completely update his biggest track in love again to make it a hit the second time around plus released spaced out, wonky party smashers on wolf music, phonica, city fly and telefonplan. while all this was going on bergerac was largely on ice but now berman is turning his energy back to the label with a vengeance.

the 4th in tee mangos tribute project, inspired by the much referenced theo parrish quote: love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or dj. everything else stems from that core, that love. with that love, sampling can become a tribute an expansion on ideas long forgotten, reconstruction, collage. time is up is the first track here. arpeggios shimmer and crisp simple drums hiss and fizz along, until introduction of the classic detroitian vocal and one shot filtered rhodes sample. a deftly simple combination of classic ingredients. think 90s inner city meets a dj sprinkles era motor city drum ensemble.
