nice price deal !!! andrea doria is such a maniac in the best possible way for sure, when its about creating soundscapes, noisy filters and funky percussion breaks. with tracks like >arsenico< or >exit<, he stopped beeing nice and presents the dirrrrty side of italian sound made in bologna. distortion, bitreduction and noise are the key elements accompanied by stomping grooves that can t be resisted. not less placed in the range of loud and proud sound comes >summertime< with beautiful harmonics, paired along its deep, subtle bassline ready to blast every afterparty.

the man known as dj nature holds a long and illustrious list of releases that spans all the way back to the early 90s, when, as nature boy, the bristol born dj and producer was carving out sample heavy house music for labels like ruff disco records and the underworld affiliated tomato label. his relatively modern re-incarnation, as dj nature, has seen singles and two albums come correct on revered labels like golf channel recordings and jazzy sport. following on from futureboogies landmark 50th release, dj nature drops a heavyweight four track ep on the bristol label, each track promising and delivering summertime vibes in abundance. born lifted, with its deft guitar licks and soulful vocal chops over lazy, hazy beats, is a great example of the nature aesthetics that make his tracks so very popular across the house fraternity. my life picks up the pace, deploying granite hard snares and cosmic chords with dusted vocal samples. on the flip, what it isnt packs some jazz chops with its sampled pianos and saxophone riffs over a discordant beat that swings with the best of them, whilst ep closer loving u more again serves up some delicious summertime grooves with the perfect marriage of deep, funky bass and seductive samples.

i ran the zoo is a lesson in stripped-back contrast and subtlety, with an acidic groove bleeping away over driving percussion and delicate atmospherics in the digital version, the tension growing with every thud of the kick drum.a dizzying breakdown raises the bar with snare rolls and dramatic pads, with the wide-open space therein soon sucked back into the void when the beat drops back in.

originally released in 1997 during the heyday of the alternative uk electro scene, finley quaye’s debut “maverick a strike” struck a chord with many. fusing dub, reggae, pop, triphop and indie, his amalgam of styles resonated throughout the music world like no other record at the time.

segun bucknor fell in love with american soul music as a student at new york’s columbia university. otis redding, wilson pickett, sam cooke and ray charles hadn’t made much of a splash in africa at the time and when bucknor returned to nigeria in 1968, he was determined to bring the sound to a wider audience.
the result was brand of afro-soul that in turn became a proto-type of afrobeat. with his bands, the assembly and the revolution, he released a few politically charged tracks, but even with his energetic dance trio, the sweet things, turning up the heat, bucknor couldn’t compete with fela kuti.

in 2017, the finnish jazz scene seems to bubble with talent. one of the most prominent players in this mix is by definition, trumpeter jukka eskola. after over a decade of adventures in different spaces of jazz – from the dance floor burn of the five corners quintet to the raw expressive modes of mikko innanen’s small big band, jimi tenor’s cosmic jazz and his own prime cti styled solo recordings – eskola takes things back to bare basics. and as usual, when it’s done right, it’s the best thing out there.
