there arent many artists that can lay claim to having put out records on labels as divergent as rough trade and john talabot’s hivern discs. perhaps this is because few artists express such genuine diversity in their musical tastes and creative explorations as david kitt. since the turn of the decade as new jackson he has mined a seam of driving, ghostly house to run parallel with his solo strand of ambient folk electronica. his debut release in 2011 the night mail on pogo channeled early record collection heroes aphex twin and orbital through to drexciya and projekt pm but had one foot firmly in the 21st century beaming in like some futuristic cyberballad. on the flip side hussle free had that mix of house and boogie sensibilities with dark and dusty synths and vocoder that would become a signature. this was followed by acclaimed releases on hivern, permanent vacation, major problems, apartment and most recently cin cin. his debut album set for release on all city in may was recorded in kitt’s bedroom studio overlooking dublin bay, its nocturnal hues very much a product of the nightshift often working on headphones with the rest of his housemates fast asleep. it takes full advantage of the scope of the lp format, ebbing and flowing between deep house club ready gems and more restrained and meditative beatless moments for the morning after. the recording process yielded many eureka moments with kitt finally nailing sounds that had hitherto proved elusive. a key moment was getting a bank loan to buy an sp 1200 sampler

finnish techno icon mono junk aka kim rapatti joins forces with berlin based freestyle man aka klas sasse lindblad, known for his productions on classic labels like sähkö and moodmusic. pata ep starts with the hard hitting techno title ‘not a love story’, haunting vocals, simple synthline, slicing percussion and deep bassdrum, all u need to make an effect, this must be heard in a big sound system. following with ‘need your lovin’ the ep takes a more electro approach, mesmerising love story with jupiter-8 bassline and 808 beats accompanied with vocals on this track too by mr rapatti. the ep ends with ‘stella polaris’, a production which started as a jam in 2007 in berlin at sasse’s blackhead studios and was finished 10 years later in 2017 in the same location. reminiscing of early 90s electronica time when everything was pure and gold and when these fellows also were starting their careers. ‘stella polaris’ leaves no one cold with emotional themes of analog synthesis and depth of the bass.

flexxseal label owner christopher joseph returns for the fifth edition of the series. christopher bridges the gaps between “classic” and “contemporary”, he expresses the concept of music as a continuation, a narrative, and leaves no space for pretentious judgement.

little mary strays from the pack, floating from one rock to another, in the midst of the narrow cascading river stream. feeling the respirating leaves ebb and flow, she caught a glimpse of a pagan rain dance, a drum circle within a pocket of sunshine – where all mantras come to life. this captivating split ep (titled ‘acosta’), sees kilchhofer’s second 12”, after his ‘dersu’ ep on ‘marionette’. the flip side features hainbach who gets his work pressed on vinyl for the very first time – after a few tape releases, his latest being on ted butler & cortini’s ‘limited interest’ label. this is truly something wonderful from two very gifted and unique artists.

after multiple cassette and 12” releases through kastil’s stale in 2016, it’s time for irazu’s latest addition to the series of complex techno works. “shtamm” is a package that contains four original cuts + a remix by specialist of high-end machine music regis. “refused to be found” is a soaring travel through moods and sonic landscapes which at times resonates like a helicopter flying through an inner city estate building. the aesthetic nature of the opening track is extended through “shtamm”. a multi dimensional piece of work that showcases a more submersive side of irazu s broad pallette. “last hours” is a cinematic stroke of vivid pads that sound like they were extracted from a remastered russian thriller classic. regis opens ups the b-side with a rework of “shtamm”. the off-beat machine funk of the remix leaves little of the original mix intact, yet regis has turned it into a staggering piece of ferocity. “torso” is another irazu original that sound like 7.5 minutes of vigorous rhythms and swerving perc elements.

bombarda digs deep into several ethnic music traditions and leaves the audience dancing on dark grooves with a tinge of psychedelica.a twang-american, psychedelic underground road trip to africa, the middle east and the americas. this is psycho etno party music!

its been nearly a year since he featured on robsoul, under his v.i.c.a.r.i. alias, but sheffield house don tommy vicari jnr returns to the label with another beautifully creative ep. opener ‘breff’ is a coming together of polar opposites. whilst harps glide across the prodigious pulse of its acidic bassline, open hats shimmy and snares strike. somehow, all together, it works to perfection. the quaking bass, grinding stab and ‘get dahn’ vocal serve to create a stripped back tool across the opening bars of our a2. however when the beats drop its secret is revealed within its killer groove. as the lights come on tommy rolls out one final jam in glittery disco cut ‘in the night’. a last seductive slice from the northern powerhouse and one that leaves us hotly anticipating his robsoul return.

stepback records launch with the first new thinktank material in many years!! danger at 300 fathoms ep combines styles from many genres, electro, house, techno, reggae, electronica all neatly produced and packaged to build an excellent first release for stepback records. its no surprise as thinktank aka colvin cruickshank has a strong background in writing and producing top quality music. his band snide rhythms has a cult following and his music with thinktank reveals the breath and diversity of colvins talents as a writer and producer. a side algae rhythms kicks off the ep. its a house focused club record with a quirkyness that defines thinktanks sound. meanwhile, w sludge on b1 packs more of a punch with its heavier kick drum, snares and a much more skanky feel. we round off with l ahrax point an uncomprimising club track. its badass electro but again with a deep twist that intrigues the listener and leaves you wanting to listen again and again.

noumen - white silence we first spotted noumen in 2012 and alongside cygnus was one of the first to be asked to join cpu. over 4 years later he finally delivers an ep and lp that is a true labour of love. abstract electronics of the highest quality. it s idm, but with that essential hip hop influence making it immeasurably more addictive and pleasing. with plenty of melody and swing layered over intricate rhythm programming, it leaves listeners stunned. white silence is taken from the forthcoming album apeiron. remaining 3 tracks are exclusive to this ep.

sandhu reaches the third stage with an ep that includes three tracks: on side a -black hole- is a powerful hammer with strong chigago contamination that leaves little space for romanticism, while -hunt-em- moves like a wave, dark and sensual that brings us to the depths of techno. new in this third volume is the presence of the duo hinode on the side b, where we find a long hypnotic hike on futuristic scenarios: here the machines are in control and do the dance.

this release - a collaboration between ali x (alphonse from azari & iii) and mexicos theus mago - turns the heat up all the way to on and just leaves it there. the lyrical content of the title track would lead many to use descriptors like sexy, sleazy, and steamy like you wouldnt even believe, and while the music also bears that out its important to remember not to stigmatize something that almost everyone does at least a couple of times a week. vision, meanwhile, offers the perfect b-side accompaniment, a sci-fi techno workout where you dont even have to think about sex if you dont want to. the ep features dub versions of both tracks for more stripped-down club sets aimed at people who understandably have problems with the sound of the human voice. it also includes a remix by curses, whom we recently bumped into (he says cornered) in berlin and asked if hed provide one of his trademark eerie downtempo excursions. long story short: he said yes.

the dj and producer from cantabria comes back into the picture with this ‘seconds of light’, which is released on his own seven villas music. boli&#769,,var goes deeper and deeper into velvet soul deep-house, with a dreamy touch which is especially present in the track which names the ep. therefore, it counts on a soft groove and an inherent club vibe which makes it perfect for summer sophisticated sets, or even for listening on one’s ‘me’ time. simo&#769,,n garci&#769,,a’s remix of ‘seconds of light’ darkens up the original, giving it an extra push of strong kick in order to take it to the late hours and the vibrating underground dancefloor. ‘all clear’ is under el txef_a’s approach, a modular, cosmic and disco kraut-rock space trip, with an acid reminiscence. illustrated escapisim whch does not forget about the dancefloor. ‘leaves without shadows’ was a track which was originally included in bolivar’s last compilation ‘the obscure figure’, also released in seven villas. pablo enjoys this time the collaboration of upercent from valencia, and also includes a remix by berlin’s duo youandme. deep but rhythmic, almost martial tech-house, which is as well danceable and in constant emotional progression. through his new ‘seconds of light ep’, pablo boli&#769,,var makes us involved in his sound imaginary, which is always wide, varied and gets given qualities which are linked to his music bet: quiality, good taste and international scope.

ilario alicante is back on the track and he simply beats the shit out us! the italian techno maestro presents a stronger than strong release that defines the alicante-sytle in pure perfection. the extreme detroit flavoured alicante double pack tracker comes with remixes by adventice and mark broom. alicantes originals “virgo storm” and “hypno” are based on a massive and masculine beat programming and wave the “purpose maker” and “axis” flag like no other of his releases so far. this is heavy material - this feeds rob hood and jeff mills fans and we can see and hear alicantes admiration for the underground resistance back catalogue here! adventice (dj deep & romain poncet) remix for “virgo storm” follows this direction however it leaves out the manic synth elements and incorporates even more peaktime-floor-action-sounds that have only one message: total dancefloor madness! mark brooms remix for “hypno” introduces a very cool but deep-dark and filtered organ-bassline which gives his remix an even more hypnotic touch in contrast to the cheeky and nasty original by ilario alicante. this 4-track-package proofs that good and solid techno is still fresh and alicante leaves a major footprint with this release! play this loud and drive your speakers to the edge, azzurro alicante is back on cocoon recordings!

outcast oddity returns for their first full artist ep. who better to ask than sebastian voigt? his contribution to the label s v/a 003 compilation called lux aeterna‘, was a transcending techno trip that turned heads earlier this year. just as the ep s title, or rather the lack thereof leaves room for interpretation, this music refuses to be categorised too easily. rough around the edges but effortlessly elegant, one foot in the past and one in the present, sebastian delivers three mature tracks that evoke memories of acid house, uk rave, sweaty basements, strobe lights and euphoric moments.

daniele di martino now comes back with an ep that is made for long and dark nights in the small clubs. therefore, di martino goes back to his roots by creating straight deep house combined with a pushing bassline, as he does in the original version of faust - providing a result that is perfect to be played somewhere in the deepness of the night when there is no time for hesitation. the second track different comes a bit more melodic, includes vocal snippets and leaves space to breathe und feel - while the bass is as dark, it could dig an aisle in the middle of the dancefloor.

long awaited repress of this amazing masterpiece as very limited white vinyl edition. what happens when scales and patterns of contradicting emotional imprints combine? when light and darkness, bitter and sweet, frost and blaze collide? those are the questions that johannes heil chooses to address on his upcoming album, opening up a vast grey-scaled area for the listener to traverse with techno as a blindfold. ‘black light’ sees the german techno mainstay return to the album format for an intimate ten track odyssey of close-curtained introspection. heil chooses the words of fellow futurist nikola tesla to set the stage of the black light story >black is the true face of light, only we do not see this<. track names are dropped in favor of a chronology of scenes, better adapted to the seemingly polar opposition of the forces that the figure and cocoon regular conjures throughout the album. everything that we perceive is processed and set into relation with past memories, digested emotions and iron-branded impressions. battling the current, johannes heil chooses to challenge certitudes by forcing us out of our comfort zones into the absence of light. if the pictures painted on >black light< are dark, they are also far from monochromatic. the machine-driven sonic prism acts both as the heavy cloud and the burst of light that shoots through to guide us. its the aggressor and the victim, the clenched teeth and the jubilant, the paranoia and the sanity of the mind. its pure heads-down driving techno with volumes of grandiose. provoking our senses, extending his art onto our personal canvases, the exile boss gives the listener the freedom to interpret the emotional context of each piece, to write the scripts of the individual scenes. the impression that >black light< leaves upon first listen testifies that 20 years down the road, johannes heil shows no sign of slowing down.

bit027 is by 2 italians (who do it better as we already know anyways ...) mario masullo & glitches who deliver a pure particle riot on their >pimps ride free< ep. the kids (mario masullo from rome and glitches peepz from naples) without a doubt know what they are doing on this strong as it gets 3 track ep. the message is raw driving techno with an orchestral feel and an overall extra ordinary hypnotizing mood that really breaks away from the norm and will leave the dancer behind thirsty for more. while the a-side is more on the techy driving side of things, combining orchestral sounds for creating a very quite unusual vibe, b1 goes even deeper in hypnotizing your ears and fucking with your brains, real phsychotic dancefloor madness is the key here. b2 then heads back to the melodic side of the game, without forgetting to keep a strong eye on an intense dance-floor aspect here also. melodies so sweet and clean keep flirting with your ears on this one and its just all so well put together, that it manages to keep an minimal feel, eventhough its filled with so many ideas and great sound details, that it simply leaves us behind speechless and answers the question why our new pimps, sure ride for free at the same time ...

vinyl only - round 2 for neukolln based boutique imprint xk after hauke freer s phenomenal first volume left heads baffled all over the place. this time, the label hands the a side to retro spook maniac matthias reiling, who opens with hand of hope, a tune that fuses an attitude-heavy, upright bass / piano theme with a cold hearted drum workout. strongly physical, sensitive, yet somewhat arrogant as we feel here. reiling twangs up his stratocaster on melodioso and explores the possibilities of sequencer based surf rock. you know, like a computer trying to be a backing band or the other way around. we can t help but imagine chris isaak singing under the shower to this one. the b side is freer territory once again, and hauke takes us deep into his realm of hypnotic, druggy dub-disco sculpting. reach out sucks you in, leaves you utterly disoriented and makes your mind paint a picture you would not have painted elsewhere. when you try to tell your friends, you can t find any words, yet it feels right and you all smile at each other.

after the release of the album -the rustling of the leaves- in november of 2015, and appearing on tommy four seven s 47 label, snts announces his new label sacred court, which will move towards a more experimental and distorted sound, covering styles such as noise, industrial, techno post-punk, ebm, etc.

canadian minimal standard-bearer pheek is the fifth artist to sign up for the untold stories protagonist series, and he s packing some of the crispest grooves he s laid down in some time. -lonely wolf- is everything a minimal house track should be, with a crackling, shuffling beat and layers of subtle orchestration building into a soul-stirring groover. -father- however takes a more abstract route into off-kilter percussion and exotic found sounds specifically arranged to tickle the mind. that leaves it to -the logical question to come is yet to be defined- to dominate the b-side in a 16-minute trip that moves through all manner of moods and moments.

the period of the 1960s and 70s was so fertile that the speed with which tastes changed left a colossal amount of incredible music to gather dust - perhaps most famously a profusion of funk, soul and rock. countless of local bands released their music on their own without a label. chain was one of those bands whose pounding double-sider leaves us standing mouth wide open. hard drums, sharp horns, raw vocals, and supercool guitar licks. what more can you ask for?

dil withers has been making noise ever since his emergence in 2013 on a split tape with ohbliv (dil blivers). residing in seattle, wa, dil has been thriving in the towns rich vinyl scene, soaking up all that he can. jazz heavy loops with dusty drums is dils calling card. studies is an audio collage of samples, drums, vocals, thoughts and feelings. as dil studies the game, he takes notes, waiting for his time to shine. his time has come.

coyote s release their 4th album song dogs. 7 tracks of percussive elecronic mediterranea. opening side 1 is jamon y quesa and chuggy bass driven soundtrack to an early afternoon drive through dusty scrubland to the beach. track 2 natural way is a mellow meditation on becoming a clear thinking wise man. track 3 falling leaves conjurs up lazy moments taking the time to appreciate the beauty the simple things around us. side 2 close with the haunting and soothing herbal remedy side 2 opens with tanits groove a beautiful balearic homage to the godess tanit the warrior goddess of dance, fertility, creation and destruction. the protector goddess of ibiza. featuring the guitar of long time coyote collaborator saro tribastone. track 2 no time to play is a powerful uplifting elecronic groove to welcome a sunrise, i feel the vibration finally the album closes with cala conta sunset. an ambient memory of a brief monent in time on the cliffs of cala conta watching then sun set into the mediterranean sea.

yet more italians on optimo trax! jose manuel delivers 4 unique exotic, fourth world, tribal slabs of ritual music. a1, the great beast in outer space is actually an andrew liles track that jose has completely reworked and sprinkled his magick on. mr. liles is one of my favourite producers in the world, both for his solo work and for his input into my all time heroes nurse with wound. for those who know his work, having something by him that will work on a dancefloor may bring a smile to your face. thankfully i know him a bit and he was more than happy to grant permission for this to be released. a2, folklore is fourth world exotica reimagined for late night dance rites. aa1, ritual, is exactly what the title says it is. aa2, sisi leaves the dance floor completely and even though optimo trax is 100% aimed at djs, was simply too lovely to leave off.
