currently two of the busiest men in contemporary deep house, alex agore and james johnston have still found the time to establish their joint no matter what recordings as a potent outlet. this sixth release sees johnston at the buttons for sole control after a couple of split releases and the consumer ep demonstrates a further refinement of his own distinct brand of house music. arriving on transparent vinyl, lead track give him prozac sets the tone with a thick four note synth lead that accrues all manner of dreamlike analogue qualities as it progresses backed by those crisp rolling rhythms johnston is known for. columbo likes the nightlife takes things on a notably deeper path, all dubby chords and intricate skipping percussive touches augmented by epic sweeping textures, whilst face down and they had cocktails maintains the same feel if upping the pace somewhat. johnston ends strongly with the sublime analogue build of the sleepwalker.

the savannah ep concludes mr. beatnick s synthetes trilogy, a series which has signalled the london producer s migration from hip-hop into well-schooled deep house. the first two installments, at their best, married adeptly selected samples with stylish synth work in a manner reminiscent of moodymann or andrés, but not excessively beholden to detroit house.

roger gerressen switches to the main fof label for his next release, liberal taking up the entirety of the a side with a killa groove resplendent with knife edged percussion and tripped out synth stabs. flipsides mint goes subaquatic with a serious slice of heads down bizinizz - a male spoken vocal refrain repeats throughout to give a hypnotic edge. lastly, roger teams up with his buddy smokin g on drunk game, super rounded, housed up beats and an undulating synth / string line permeate the groove lending the ep a sense of levity.

bcr v02 is the second vinyl release by bcr. this time its ad.lib (bcr, gynoid, affin) who produced the original and the remixes are done by rebekah (clr), joseph mcgeechan (bcr, prosthetic pressings) und monya (bcr, if?). she lost control is track title and announcement at the same time here. all of the four versions have this certain raw and uncompromising sound. they all work with the topic of loosing control on different levels. the very personal interpretations of the four artists share a hypnotic and alienating atmosphere. the prominent synth blips reminds of stroboskopic lights and excessive nights.

named in homage to the series of collectable football cards from the 1970s, the rothmans label follows the inaugural mario kempes release with another long-haired icon being given his dues in the form of the harald toni schumacher release, complete with another four tracks of chugging techno-disco. emotional responses timothy j fairplay kicks things off with *off the rails*, an expectedly dark and tense piece of carpenter-esque synth, while lwe writer per bojsen-moller delivers the atmospheric techno of *staying late*, whose rippling analogue bassline gives way to an unexpectedly funky breakdown. on the flip, steve cooks *noahs arp* takes things a balearic house direction with its thick, filtered analogue textures adding some psychedelic colour to its mid-tempo grooves, while emile strunzs *magnetic* adds some acid flavour to its low-swung, vocoder saturated italo swagger.

adam jay’s “mediastinum ep” is the product of a near death experience turned into an opportunity to create. after experiencing acute trauma to the left lung, the artist was diagnosed with pneumomediastinum, the sounds featured in the production of this record were recorded in the intensive care unit at community east hospital in indianapolis. “inward” is a raw, stripped down stomper filled with anxiety and a pace of purpose. the a2 track, “terrible precision” brings an atmosphere of tension and darkness that drives the ep forward. the synth groove of “chatter” sits atop the recordings of medical monitoring equipment intended to alarm the listener. the unsettling dischord created is contrasted by a powerful low end groove. “concert of the machines” comes with an addictive half time broken beat groove. the warm, effected electric piano work plays off more alert sounds from the hospital room creating a chilled out vibe that is ideal for closing a set. already support from justin berkovi, nigel richards, gayle san, tony rohr, andrei morant, and brian kage.

first in is a beat heavy analogue chug rework of the rare and weird italo 7 inch *i am your master* by the mysterious italo connoisseur savino dj and dj peet need based in holland. the arpeggiating bass line digs a circular trench that gets deeper as the track marches on until you end up stuck on an island with a strange creepy midget man. music that blurs the line between disco dreams and nightmares starion is back for more on ep2. how will he make a heavier track than ep1s *another dimension*? by making *darkstar*. analogue manctalo chug at its finest. big bass line, big synth chords, big vocoder action. you couldnt get more dark disco electronic if you went clubbing with daleks and the cybermen were djing.

limited reissue of this incredible and highly sought-after futuristic 12 from 1981. released on west african music, a tiny label from the ivory coast, and finding a spiritual home on the italian eclectic cosmic scene, both tracks on this 12 are brilliantly innovative and exhibit a minimal techno-esque aesthetic way ahead of their time. side as closer is a chugging sinuous flow punctuated by jerking monotone vocals, horn stabs and synth arpeggios with a strong dancefloor sensibility. flip over for stunningly weird electronic percussion workout tam tam - a crazed sparse soundscape of strange falsetto tribal chants, funky hand claps and drums, synth wobbles, spasms and tweaks. mystery surrounds the identity of the elusive artist codek but evidence points to it being an offshoot project of french new wave producer john marieux.

rekids have teamed up with detroits fit distribution and enlisted the services of motor city locals marcellus pittman and urban tribe to put the 313 sound on *working* and *taxi talk*. on the former, marcellus pittman lays down his trademark blend of mechanical yet jerky old-skool drum machine rhythms and disorientingly dissonant, tripped-out synth chords – creating a somewhat eerie atmosphere that evokes images of detroits manufacturing plants of yesteryear. on the flipside, urban tribe transform *taxi talk* into a big room monster, using rumbling synth bass, electronic bleeps and laser gun snares to transport us back in time to a dark and hazy 90s warehouse rave.

tropics a.k.a. chris ward first appeared on planet mu last year, following up two eps with the album parodia flare. commended by pitchfork for his lush soundscapes and hazy pop, whats clear with tropics is that he listens to a lot of dance music and he cares about production values. the synth and beat programming is as competent as anything out there, and he avoids lazy indie stylings and one button bontempi organ beats – his are crafted songs, much of the pleasure lying in his gift for dynamic arrangement, which is a joy amid rafts of useful formulaically assembled house tracks.
in common with the general post-financial collapse vibe there is less sunshine in this ep than before, and he has absorbed something from a year of intensive house music listening, but chris essential qualities remain a forward-looking wistfulness, hope beneath melancholy, something even more acutely needed now than before. oh look! here comes winter.

nyc (via paris) based dj and producer sid vaga returns to nickodemus wonderwheel recordings with another 12 inch full of exotic deep house vibes sure to light up dance floors everywhere. it is an impressive follow-up to his genuinely well-received *brazuca* single from last year. on the a side, sid delivers *na na ye*, a driving cut with a pulsing bass line and hypnotic african chant that pushes the tune forward before getting flipped into a percussive section alongside deep and subtle synths. on the flip *manouche* can be found, a late night house tune with psychedelic balkan guitars and swirling gypsy vocal samples punctuating the track. rounding out the single, valencian producer oscar barila (plastic city) gives *manouche* a truly funky remix with a squelchy 80s new wave style bass line, thumping house beat, and irresistible synth work coming together for a real after-hours nightclub workout.

the excellent beats in space label continues to impress with each release. following up lauers monster mascat ring down release, eddie rushchas celebrated secret circuit project steps up once again, bringing us *afterlife*. a typically freeform analogue synth workout with fx drenched vocals and that unmistakeable secret circuit vibe who better to handle the remix than the ukraines very own analogue ambassador, vakula. his treatment is a textbook vakula production, warm, expertly evolving, raw machine funk. wrapping things up we have a dub version, in the truest sense of the word, an utterly spaced out and remade rub down. typically superb artwork and shrinkwrapped sleeve packaging as you have come to expect.

detroit veteran len bartush (mutate) returns to advance the series that began with the now classic circle 1. a full round kick and jack style upbeats are all that is necessary to support the deep, modulated synth lines that travel through lush plates of reverb. alberto pascual hits a homerun with his remix that will move any club, festival, or warehouse party. project 313s remix supplies moving synth lines are stripped down and replaced with driving rhythms and pulsating bass making this a superb techno offering. the plankton remix turns up the tension with warehouse style percussion and intertwining rhythms complimented by science- fictionesque stabs and pounding bass. the >circle 2< ep is an essential piece of detroit minimalism.

mark es collaborative project e series continues with the follow up to the excellent megacity ep. on this 12, mark teams up with keyboardist nat woodcock & vocalist greg bird to piece together another excellent ep, combining the influences from both producers ranging through 80s synth pop, classical avant garde, italo disco & detroit techno. a departure from previous merc releases which have relied on sample heavy driven deep house, project e holds tight to the deep house direction but takes it into distinctive cosmic territory.
