new record on help recordings by the arhus quartet maizena. this one is one of those more relaxing and introvert records we put out to stress the fact that life is not always about dancing. pretty sounds and not too many unpleasant or scary moments. most of the music is in the vain of their earlier work on no hands, regelbau and help, a rhythmical ambient music. recorded in the isolated haelge studios surrounded by nothing but the sea and the mols mountains.

having remixed depeche mode and dj hell as well as releasing a new fixmer/mccarthy single with douglas mccarthy (of nitzer ebb), 2017 has already proven to be a productive year for terence fixmer. with the new force ep, the berghain resident follows up on 2016 s beneath the skin ep (o-ton 97), offering four stylistically different but congenial techno scenarios for club use. the record s eponymous track on a1 doesn t think twice: the initial signal horn starts as sudden as the staggered kick drum rhythm, reoccurring throughout the cut s 6-minute playtime while sustained and oppressive screams from a synth, extra multifaceted ebm percussion and synth drones add to the overall sombre atmosphere of ôforceö. the musical vibe distinctly changes with ôsidewalkö which puts more focus on synth melodies û like its predecessor a techno cut per se, but with a stronger accent on hypnotic motifs. on b1 ômelting planetsö emphasises the kick: clocking in slightly slower than the other three tracks û at 122 bpm û the bass drum here sounds extra vivid, ever-present and spot-on, just as if terence was playing the drum kit sitting right next to you. with additional percussion and swirling melodies ômelting planetsö is a lulling, mesmerizing meditation in dub techno. ôstriking patternsö on b2 links to the best moments of force ep s a-side, combining bone-dry bass drum hits and distinctive brazen, banging noises, pulsing synths pads and sizzling surface sounds.

berlin based pardon moi, consisting of james brook and thomas freudenthal, makes music that would fit perfect as a soundtrack for a ride in a ferrari gto convertible, or on a transatlantic flight on a concorde. unfortunately, vintage ferraris are ridiculously expensive and concords are taken out of flight but still the music creates an air of luxury and decadence for you to fill your lungs and air with. this 7inch release on hoga nord rekords is the first on the label but the duo have released material on nein records and vocoder electro.

after zine s m--e ep started the climb to the peak of the mind everest the crew s journey continues with this versatile four track ep by fairly unknown but up-and-coming producer lowshore. his debut record provides a fine selection of superb crafted house with a not to deny touch of funk and jazz influence featuring a tooled bassline cut, a drum infected sampler session surrounded by an emotive peaktime jam and an ambient run out on the flipside. each release comes in a black screenprinted sleeve with an embossed photographic fine art print.

incl julius steinhoff version (smallville) ...telfort returns with a third 12inch on his own imprint, following the aptly titled debut in a good place and stellar follow-up lickety split. his best yet, the edinburgh-based producer drops the evocative and soul-stirring soon i will embark on a journey, with its immense, alluring melody and downright addictive grooves. on the flip, the hazy and hypnotic æuntil nowÆ takes us further on the journey with its shimmering textures and mesmeric flow, radiating warmth through mind-soothing chords and gritty percussion. further on, we hear a reinterpretation from julius steinhoff, co-founder of smallville records and half of smallpeople. serene and smooth but equally stomping and floor-ready, the melancholic strings and trickling percussion slowly develop and captivate in a sublime and entirely fitting rework.

the third release on the emergent dreamtime label finds bobby bricks and miskotom sharing precious wax space with their own takes on laid back balearic house. bricks is up first, laying down a laid back house chugger propelled by fluttering synth lines that have spent time soaking up plenty of vitamin d. amazon blue does away with the drums for much of the tune, letting the new age synth tones do all the work before a mellow set of percussion comes loping in. miskotom has a more nocturnal feel at work on star master, but it s no less plush in its execution, while ad lucem ramps up fretless bass licks and plastic flute tones for another blissful excursion onto the astral plane.

forever faithfully mining the past to keep your shelves stocked with gems that might have otherwise been consigned to history, emotional rescue turn their attention towards carl & carol jacobs cult slice of early house music, and what a treat it is. -yonge street jam band- comes in the form of two mixes that serve as impeccable examples of late 80s club music in all its culture spanning glory. the playful sample slicing and triggering of the second mix is the winner, although the vocals on the original version are equally on point if you want a little more soul in the mix. jonny 5 then steps up on the flip for a bold but measured re-rub that stretches the vibe out for nine minutes of perfect party fodder.

new york meets brighton as both label and artist step out on wax for the first time. this is a new, exciting realm for homage, but they surely know they re onto a winner with the feel good disco edit tones of tech support. there are classics embedded into these fine jams, with -feel it- coming on particularly summery in its laid back disco funk stylings. -inside out- is slightly more looped up, but no less uplifting, while -clarity- heads into a more woozy, filtered groove that feels inspired by the likes of theo parrish s ugly edits. by way of contrast -sugar- is a much more electronic affair that kicks with purpose while simultaneously reaching for the stars.

following the excellent single-sided heater from sharif laffrey, discos capablanca is back in action once again with odopt, previously only spotted on excellent swedish label born free. the record opens up with the ominous, dramatic tones of -belgrade-, all searing synth swells and bloated drums working towards some cinematic apocalypse scenario. on the b-side, -croque trans croque- has a cooler head but instead aims to unsettle with its off-key metal chimes atop a steady-ticking disco rhythm, and then -rex ingram- finishes the ep off with yet more surreal beatdowns that will send the party in a very interesting direction indeed.

(get bad). the result? one of the most unlikely and essential party records of 2017. queen and house music: not necessarily the most obvious of bedfellows, but music for freaks has never been a label to take the path most travelled. over the course of their de-cades long journey the label founded by luke solomon and justin harris has released uni-quely idiosyncratic dance music, establishing the label as a go-to imprint for those seeking imaginative, unpredictable records that still undeniably work on the dancefloor. their latest release might well be among the most out-there of them all. originally released back in 1984,two sharp pencils (get bad) is a record by queen drum-mer roger taylor, featuring him on vocals as well as drums, bass & guitar. now brought bang up to date via a fully official and endorsed remix courtesy of anna wall & corbi, this overlooked album track looks set to become one of the summers most essential records. born and bred in the uk, anna wall is a dj, producer and label owner who is a key player in london�s underground house music scene. her label the bricks champions up-and-coming producers, while anna herself has djd all over the world, most recently for mixmag at pacha for their ims launch party. corbi is an ibiza-based dj and producer, a&r for the highly respected fina records and co-founder of melon bomb, a party and dj collective that has in the space of just a couple of years become one of the white isles most talked-about exports. having met while working at house giant defected records some years ago, anna felt that corbi would be the perfect studio accomplice to work on the remix of two sharp pencils.

the limited, hand-stamped presentation of the canoe releases matches the music contained within, all grainy and unusual but utterly tooled up for the club. nyra s pet project is providing a fascinating insight into the make up of this ever emerging artist, and tracks like -opening rhyme- are sure to pique interest from all kinds of adventurous spinners. while the track may start in a kind of looped up deep house headspace, after the breakdown it takes an unexpected, thrilling swerve into twitchy acid. -tape trek- is more overt in its surreality with its layers of pitched speech getting run through the mill and splashed over a primal drum machine beat. -galaktik- meanwhile has a touch of old skool rave about it, but it s far from an obvious throwback track. suffice it to say, we ll have whatever nyra s having.

ensuring they keep things pushing forwards while also celebrating their past, vibraphone call upon rising talent gemil to deliver an ep that is purely fresh material. -forces & gravity- is perfectly honed to get the maximum response from the dance with its muscular production and catchy vocal sample, but if you want an even more focused affair the remix strips things down to the bare necessities and works just as effectively. on the b side -horizon- gets a touch more playful in its synth work with interplaying riffs creating a dazzling whole, and then -solar storm- brings the heads-down, hard-swinging heaviness into the mix in a devastating finishing blow.

having sprung into action with the sol explorer ep on girasole, william caycedo is back with a new selection of jams on the ever-developing slapfunk. as the label s remit for minimal house and techno broadens, we re treated to low slung leftfield beats on -booty call- before the peppier broken beat groove of -ain t no joke-. -creepin - and -g groove- head into more familiar territory for slapfunk fans, but there s still space for the crisp, laid back funk of -tales from the west- and the off-kilter jazzy vibes of -yes we do- thrown in for good measure.

next up on etruria beat, is the dutch duo hush & sleep who have been steadily making name for themselves in the past year. they deliver a stunning two tracks ep with farrago and marco effe on remix duty. the ep starts off on a joyous note with the track mirth. as this is an old english word for gladness, the main melody takes you on a carefree ride supported by a stomping kick and dreamy pads in the back. farrago takes a more stripped down approach with his version. he builds on the dreamy pad, making it serve as a warm blanket over his signature tight percussion. contradicting mirth, the second original slowly starts to drag you into a feeling of hysteria, hence the name. taking their signature kick as the foundation, hush & sleep use a haunting melody that lingers on in the back and sets an eerie mood. marco effe�s remix is a deep stunning techno groover. taking the main melody but twisting it into his own wonderful creation and sending you off on a journey into time and space.

thule s dark doppelganger ae recordings was revived last year with the excellent freyja ep by nonnimal, and now the saga continues with this devastatingly on-point release from cold. much like the vibe on thule, the music on thule continues to channel the mood of the icy tundra into refined, modern club tracks, but there s definitely a more sinister intent at work in these tracks from cold. -aerials- is a nightmarish chugger loaded with eerie sonics, while -phased out- lays down some fine dubby processing over a bed of chilly chord pulses. -exiles- is a standout track thanks to its crafty groove, coming on a little more housey than its counterparts but still heavier than the average thule jam.

hippie priest returns to argot to release his second album, see it through. having made great strides at dialing in his production and strengthening his songwriting since the release of gaia variants in 2016, the young champaign-based producer focuses his sophomore longplayer around a narrative approach. see it through is a day in the life of a lioness, says hippie priest, beginning with the soft ambience of waking up in the morning, leading up to an intense hunt in the middle, and into evening revelry and eventual slumber. the albums 11 tracks cover a large stretch of sonic ground to tell this story. its glowing opener, umbrella keeper gives way to widescreen stompers thorn and quicksand that clear the way for more contemplative moments like crystal or cherry blossom. one cant help but imagine a dramatic hunt while listening to are you okay? or carnivorous displays on desire. even tender scenes are possible with closers tanuki and tired lioness, gorgeous movements in which hippie priests melodic profficiencies shine brightest. second album from the up-and-coming young producer from central illinois.

the last few years have seen nathan melja really hit his stride, landing on such esteemed labels as mister saturday night, black opal and technicolour with an addictively weird update of the classic boxjam format. now he steps up to inaugurate dream real with three slices of upfront deviant business for all the sleazy dancers out there. there s no arguing with the rubbery bass tones and perfectly processed vocals on the original mix of -jerky teardrop-, but there s also the more wave-minded delights of the -blue mix- version of the track to suit more reflective situations. by way of contrast, -places we belong to- smooths out the mood on the b-side with a low riding slice of boogie that sports just a whiff of indie thrown in for good measure.

catherine and gerald o-connell s work as lives of angels quietly and subtly helped to define a whole generation of post-punkers for the greater part of the 1980s. much like other luminaries of the scene at the time, the couple have remained in the shadows of time, highly praised by the collectors but barely ever cited by the mainstream, and if that s not punk then we don t know what is. dark entries are doing the honours of course, and the imprint have managed to license a whole bag of previously released and unreleased material, the former from a bunch of dusty cassettes which are now going for gold on the second-hand market. this was the era of the drum machine, and these 11 tunes are all carried by that unmistakable analogue swing, at times harsh and leaning into something tech-minded, and at other times playful and quirky, a tendency which defined this outfit and the time in which they operated. what a record, this is another dark entries monster

polish beatmaker pawel strzelczyk has been slinging out all manner of beats as teilete since 2010, largely on the u know me label, but now he brings his dynamic technicolour sound to father & son to surely catapult his skills to a wider audience. there s a rich musicality at work throughout magnetic soul/magnetic tree, as blues samples, rich orchestration, dubstep rhythms, juke patterns and soulful vocals all swirl around in a highly accomplished blender. the attention to detail is remarkable and the production is pristine, but for all the daring ideas and studio skill this is also an incredibly immediate listen that draws you in from the start.

nick mackrory & harry collier�s musical partnership dates all the way back to the 90�s, when they were both deeply invested in the musical boom in the uk that followed acid house, the rave scene, and the ibiza experience. nick went from drumsticks to turntables to studio wizardry, while harry honed in on his golden voice - which led him to a stint as a singer for faithless. they found their way back to each other in 2014 and have since developed a sound together that is fresh but not too polished. with touches of 60�s chanson coupled with sundazed electronics, their songs linger on like the feeling of a long day spent outdoors in summer.

another odd and rather good 12inch from hyv. we don t know much, but they seem to just know. tip! tracks from hyvinkää, finland. written by juho kahilainen and tomi kesäniemi. both boring family men, middle-aged and middle-class. however, they ve been here long enough to learn a trick or two. nods to detroit, nods to acid. a mid-tempo track tape loader sounds like a 909 trapped in swamp. fast and jazzy r train funk pays a tribute to detroit-legends with a decent 303 line to drink beer to. the tower that stands in the woods is a dubby slow-down before suomi 100 acid celebrates finlands 100th anniversary with lyrics that deal with recession and the finnish government s fair deal to cut everyone s wage.

norwegian sound artists alexander rishaug and lasse marhaug have worked together as a duo for almost 20 years. in this time they have produced one album, 2004s feel free at home. now, the pair are ready with their follow-up: corneal clouds. the music was recorded in 2012, then put through an extensive and meticulous fermentation process of five years until now at last it is ready for the public. rishaug marhaug promotes positive thinking through their unique brand of electronic music.

legendary nitsa club from barcelona comes back releasing new music fifteen years after their first venture with nitsa recordings. the new label is called nitsa traxx. the essence is not to focus in a particular sound, but try to cover all the range of styles you can usually listen to in this acclaimed club. besides that, the main idea is pretty simple: the a side includes the original track and the b side comes with a remix. first release comes from valencian producer daniel kyo. after releases in drumpoet and bordello a parigi, on this occasion kyo dives into deep techno with a nostalgic hint to ebm. �nacht drei� sounds like one of those tracks from the infamous ruta del bacalao, but with a very nowadays production. sharp and hypnotic, but with a certain sense of epic humor. valencia style. on the flip, marc piñol remixes the original track and makes it sound blurry, obsessive, fast and mental. inspired by his legendary warmups in nitsa club, expect nothing more and nothing less that a simple but not-so-simple mixing tool with a personal touch. one of those long tracks for djs who just love to make lingering transitions to flip out the crowd. nitsa traxx will come back very soon with new music from people related to the club. family and friends. look forward to some surprises for the upcoming releases!

all djs and producers around have at least one secret weapon to play. this series curated by marvin & guy is the equation that joins together very special edits from very special artists. it will be out in three volumes in different colours: first black, second grey and third white.
