last year saw the mysterious garage shelter make their debut appearance on skylax, and little is still known about them! all we know is they are back with some freshness on the skylax classic sublabel. first up is bring back love, a track that will sink its claws in with that infectious vocal sample hook. sticking with the old school sample vibe is the lonely heart dub of attempt, it’s a bit more mellow but still has plenty of groove in it. friend of the garage shelter, dj la foudre, appears over on the b side with it’s alright (signal st mix). still on that catchy sample tip, it features one of the grooviest bassline and funky guitar pairings i’ve heard in a long time. next up, perception 66 is a smooth house affair from yet another friend, asa no hikari. rounding out the package is garage shelter’s own you (still), a dreamy pad-driven track that may indeed be the pick of the release. while we don’t know much about garage shelter, we can’t help but look forward to what they come out with next!

janette jnett pitruzzello is considered something of a legend in her home city of melbourne, where she’s been djing for well over two decades. here, she delivers her debut solo ep, featuring a quartet of tracks co-produced by maurice fulton. the latter also delivers a solo mix of opener reflection, which adds a little leftfield disco sparkle and percussive sweatiness to an otherwise organ-heavy deep house groove. theres a similarly cheery, funky and disco-tinged feel to the rolling, cut-up house goodness of swangzipani. elsewhere, the duo gets a little stranger in pursuit of dancefloor thrills bubbles away is deliciously dark, wonky and intergalactic, while judge not wanders off into head-nodding, instrumental hip-hop territory.

frankfurt based producer, dj and music lover martin heimann presents his debut single salto on carry on 008. remaining faithful to its name, the small label puts out another piece of limited wax every once in a long while. enrooted in the soundscapes of 80s proto house the original version of salto is a thriving piece of octave liberation. consistent changes between harmonics break up the repetitive structure, while fm pads and the 303 are performing a little duet. the release is ennobled by two proper remixes from moon b (peoples potential unlimited) and jex opolis (good timin). while moon b keeps it bubblin’ with some extra analogue funk bounce and subtle italo dance floor energy, the b-side is jexi-fied with some embellishment to the cords, change in the bassline and a nice 808 snap. on top mr. opolis adds some mysterious but cheesy vocals samples that match perfect with the moody 80s orchestral stabs.

watergate affairs is a brand new offering featuring residents, regulars and affiliated artists that have developed close ties to the club through the years. over the course of four tracks, jimi jules, lee jones, la fleur and david mayer & sebastian voigt perfectly display the sound of watergate. diving right in is jimi jules and he hasnt let lost a step, picking up where he left off with his stellar bogota ep earlier this year by churning out a burner. 6% is rooted in a heaving low end groove while hypnotic tones spiral around a modulating lead that never lands in the same place, ensuring a twisted dance floor venture.

francesco tristano really needs no introduction lately, his music speaks volumes and his reputation precedes him with that said we are happy to share place on lafayette with you once again, this time including some stunning remixes. the first one is a collaboration between two highly respected artists: thomas gandey and radio slave. the two take the track further into tech-house territory with the percussion driving while multiple layers begin the fall into one another, achieving a beautifully elegant and jazzy end result. gutis vision is much deeper, with hints of dub here and there as the artists drives the tension up and creates a stunning groove. the final remix come from tuff city kids, who are known for their sometimes unconventional approach to making music, and in this case, it works. they channel a raw vibe and create something that is quite possibly the furthest thing from the original in terms of percussion. the pianos keep the thread strong, and the rhythm takes care of the rest.

debut lp offering from london rap group jungle brown. having featured on sbtv with their ep ‘take one’, this lp builds on a strong foundation. sample heavy, with strong saxophone performances from ayo odia, the instrumentation is rich and thick in texture. lyrically the group go from light and playful, to deep and introspective with great subtlety. keep it movin (a1) is a light reflection of the group moving from bournemouth to london, while ‘in the city’ (b1) is a gritty anthem detailing the arrival to the city. having a strong performance record behind them as well, the group’s reach is good, both in the uk and abroad.

king ghazi is shadi khries and gilbert cohen. recorded in amman / may 2014. all the music presented here is original, and has been recorded in jordan in may 2014. this project was born when i met shadi in paris, at the percussion recording sessions for acid arab. from these sessions came the idea of&#8203,,,,,exploring local music styles on the verge of disappearing, in jordan and elsewhere in the middle east. it was also an opportunity for me to meet exceptional people and wonderful artists. for 15 days, we travelled through jordan, recording local musicians. here we hear osama al khairat aka abu sayah, an exiled syrian musician who plays the yarghoul (two flutes linked together by beeswax. one plays a drone, the other the corresponding range, all while blowing continuously). i want to specially thank shermine sawalha for allowing us to record in the living room of her parents house, as well as for coordinating the whole project. without her energy and patience, this record would not be in your hands today.

vactrol park, the collaborative endeavor between kyle martin (land of light) and guido zen (brain machine), returns to the esp institute with ii, rounding out the second half of their ep series. for this installment, a sojourn was made to stockholm to record at the computer music mecca, ems (elektronmusikstudion), where the artists had the opportunity to experiment extensively with the legendary buchla 200 modular and serge modular, two of the rarest and most pornographic modular synthesizers in existence. while both instruments originate from california (buchla in berkeley as a commission from pioneer morton subotnik, and serge at the california institute of the arts), the music vactrol park draws from these machines is far from warm and sunny. akin to their predecessors on the 2015 debut i, these works materialize a level of taste and measure of craft that’s unattainable by most, each retaining an individual cinematic approach yet working collectively toward one consummate goal—paralysis.

mugwumps subfield label introduces its first signings with the belgian-italo duo front de cadeaux (brilliantly named after the belgian ebm pioneer group front 242). front de cadeaux are dj athome & dj hugosan. hugo runs the roccodisco label with italian disco mastermind rodion (gomma/nein) while belgian killer dj athome has been spinning italo wave & house in brussels since the 90 s. they expertly produced their own brand of supreme rallentato, which is a fucked-up slo-mo italo, acid, disco, techno and house hybrid that so rightly fits with subfield s mission statement of covering subgenres. their 2 first outings on roccodisco have been remixed by fabrizio mammarella and optimos jd twitch, and a staple in ivan smagghes sets. this full ep on subfield features 2 original f2c obscene & dirty slo-mo tracks at their most playful, ouvre ta bouche and front de cadeaux theme plus the magnificent dub-house of killers. remixes comes courtesy of factory floor s gabe gurnsey (dfa) in a quite brutal bleep-techno mood and manchester s nu-balearic kingpin ruf dug (music for dreams), getting into what he described as a 808 snare roll warehouse analog fucked-up version.

modern love very rarely reaches out to artists outside of its immediate surroundings, it’s happened just a couple of times in the last 14 years. but there’s something about philippe hallais that compelled the label to ask him if he wanted to do something together. philippe has released music on a bunch of cool labels (l.i.e.s., the trilogy tapes, delsin, in paradisum), but hearing the first tracks recorded for lighthouse stories, it was obvious philippe was hitting on something new: a kinda weird slow/fast dance music that sounded like a footwork variant sewn up with an exotic production style that was impossible to pin down. these tracks eventually splintered off into different directions, held together by a strong sense of narrative and motion harking back to a teenage obsession with turntablism, detroit electro and ghetto house, and eventually juke and grime. although he’s spent the last few years focusing on more industrial dancefloor variants, for lighthouse stories philippe turned to these foundational influences, as well as his love of mixtapes and sound collages full of unfinished ideas, skits and experiments, all things that inform the flow of this new album. lighthouse stories captures a sense of nostalgia well, but is also a futuristic vision full of that exploratory, vibrant spirit that’s so hard to find in electronic music these days. frames of reference are hard, but in places it reminds us of the dusted swagger of anthony shake shakir, the acquatic drexciyan movements of ultradyne, a loose-limbed take on shangaan, and of actress at his most submerged. but ultimately, it’s an album made by a producer looking to his personal history while forging new ground, pushing ahead with little regard to convention and ultimately ending up with something completely unique: a kind of intimate journal rendered in bright colours and odd shapes.

it’s been a while since planet rhythm released an entire lp project. who else to thread into album territories than ukranian planet rhythm stalwart yan cook. after releasing various efforts through the rotterdam based imprint over the last few years, yan cook comes up with a double lp consisting of 2 discs with 2 tracks on each side. whilst shifting between various sides of the yan cook identity the xx lp proves to be an effective and bulding package over mechanic techno sounds with strong builds and exciting taints of fx.

at long last, jkriv & free magic make their collaborative debut on rnt reserve with a very unique triptych of productions. the a side is bonafide party-starter, working a soul sample in classic stomping house style, while the b-side delivers two jazzy and darker moods. a beautiful listen or spin on the dancefloor all around!

“prÉvision #02” is the second compilation and third vinyl of forecast label, french record label originated in 2012. it gathers six house, electronica and techno tracks in varied styles for various artists. the original idea was to make artists exchanges ideas together to create tracks that would exactly define each one’s identity. while cheaper shepherd’s “weasels” show again their shiny and catchy vintage house, romain play explores several music genders through a train trip across jazz, psychedelic rock and house. the new comer roman s releases his first track ever, showing his talent for groove and minimal house. on the b-side, d°c, breilitz and sir squi explore three kinds of techno. first track of this side, “erebus” shows a kompakt-like new wave but club-oriented techno. “raw interference” could without any doubt be played at berghain. last track, “(crashed)” is on the psychedelic slope of techno. it uses a sitar, to ends the compilation on a shinier note.

for the latest instalment in the apollonia story we look to argentina and the talented producer federico molinari. having been based in germany for the last couple of decades, federico has refined his sound, developing a strong signature through his dj sets and his studio productions, most of which he has released via his label oslo. federicos ability to craft effortless grooves and timeless rhythms is evident here on this killer new three-tracker. side a is the eight-minute long roller * congo toys*. the focus here is on a crisp 4x4 beat, which keeps things simple – under this lies a sturdy bassline. all the while, the low end is accompanied by a series of bleeps, which could almost be the chatter between two archaic computers, modulated and weaving in and out of the beats and bass. on the flip, we have two more dance floor-ready joints. like * congo toys*, * tres cuartos* is focused around a simple foundation, with layers of unusual effects – an overriding sense of playfulness comes through in molinaris production, perfect for the boogie down crew. last up, * joyfex* takes us further into leftfield, hypnotic, hazy atmospherics draw us into their web and we are tangled up in a mesh of vibrating whirrs and echoing, distorted voices. sublime business from an apollonia favorite…

the a side delivers a techno track and a funkier one, both of which will take you on a boat trip into an infected swamp lost somewhere in southern italy. at the same time on the b side marcello’s voodoo ritual will take possession of your body with two full-house tracks. café nanà is a crazed drive of broken percussions “and vibrant field-recordings of cups and glasses banging together in a smoke-filled, sun-drenched, cafe” while waiting for my bass is a warehouse melter reminiscent of gene hunt’s rawest works.
