working with technical limitations, metro skim masters the art of omission showing that what can be left out is just as important as what is included. momentum is achieved with ticking 909 hi-hats and grumbling basslines before being thrown into whole tracks of beat-less techno sequences.

adballons (made-up word from ”advertising balloon”) was a duo formed in tokyo and active only between 1986-88. equipped with some gear (casio cz-5000, teisco s-110f, roland mc-202, roland tr-909, korg kpr-77) and influenced by the music of d.a.f, kosmonautentraum, tommi stumpff, propaganda, the flowerpot men, cassandra complex, this heat, the pop group, spk and laibach, they released just one 7” in 1987 and played some shows in local clubs before disappear and become part of the obscure and inscrutable japanese underground scene. limited to 270 copies on 10” vinyl including the four original studio. everything remastered from the original reel-to-reel tape. each copy comes with a obi strip, an insert with some photos/lyrics/credits and a numbered card.

following a joint live performance in 2016, butter sessions present the latest collaborative effort from albrecht la brooy (analogue attic) & sleep d (butter sessions). this ep sees al & sd blend their respective styles in a stimulating way. from 50 begins the ep with steady 909 grooves and a subtle oscillating acid bass that builds into another dimension. hotham breaks the pace with atmospheric space leads looking down on a mountain of kick drums. banksia is the most psychedelic of the four, planting seeds of heavily resonating synths atop of floating drum rhythms and warm melodies. lastly, sleeping patterns takes it down a few notches into a daydream of flute-like synths and distant nostalgic vocals.

after almost two decades, dan pius album self education (moto 003) finally gets the vinyl treatment it deserves: the best tracks extracted from dat tapes, pressed on wax and renamed to living in fear for cartulis music s fourth release. even though the original and incredibly exclusive cd was heard and appreciated in the years around its release in 1999 from djs such as jeff mills and carl craig, it was virtually impossible to own (only 30 copies were made, ever). despite its rarity and status, cartulis choses this masterpiece for one principal reason: the music. an exhibition of an innovative era, of heavy duty machinery (roland juno 60, roland juno 106, roland tr-909 and emu vintage keys, just to name a few) and of fine craftsmanship (using his own samples and playing the keys himself), the album opens your mind and ears to interconnecting styles of ambient atmospheres, electronic-instrumental hip hop, and signature dance-floor killers self education and living in fear. not only for fans of dan piu and his subsequent labels (moto music, deepartsounds, no acting vibes) but for any music aficionado that appreciates a deeply cult classic.

paul woolford has been seriously spreading his wings of late, becoming omni-present by landing his tracks with ease on labels like xl recordings, running back, houndstooth, hotflush and aus music. not wanting to be shackled by genres, paul comfortably serves up a wide variety of curveballs, from the technoid charge of his 4/4 persuasions to the exhilarating warped hardcore & jungle breaks of his much loved special request project. and so it’s with welcome arms that edible usher him to our release schedule, give him the comfy sofa and let him rip it up with two havoc-inducing cuts that are already a staple in label boss eats everything’s dj sets. title track ‘chaos’ finds paul in a particularly warped mode, bleepy synth pulses oscillate wildly over a granite hard beat as a single sub-bass tone drives the brain-scrambling flurry of modular tones into overdrive. a hydrochloric synth riff settles the bed, but only until the next haul of chaotic blips come firing out of the speakers - highly effective, and possibly deranged warehouse tackle. a future classic. flip side, and woolford shows off some decidedly more soulful chops on ‘meditate . a vocal hook plays against a dubwise bass line and ascending 909 rides, as a seductive and transcendental string arpeggio creeps to the fore and demands a breakdown of its own, serving up a serious bucket load of emotion. not a dry eye in the house.

new years deal - delsins next trick is a debut double 12 from sentomea, an amsterdam native, real name sander schuurman, you might not have heard of but a real synth freak. exclusively producing his music in hardware-based live takes, and that gives rise to perfectly imperfect stuff that feels visceral and alive. often making music with a visual connection, this ep is full of versatile 909 beats and fizzing electronic textures. relative solace is up first and is a frosty house trip with bell textures and melancholic strings sounding all celestial and heavenly. wander is all about a sludgy 909 groove being lit up with bright strings and icy hi hat ringlets as dissonant pads stretch and skew all about the arrangement then fortitude boogie has classic detroit pads, a lovely broken rhythm and a funkateer bassline that makes the whole cut dance and emotional dance. fluid is more stripped back and clean, with rubbery 909 drums plodding below w atery, gurgling synth sounds up top and this most expressive and textural ep closes with the experimental fm synthesis that is matter with its raw, off beat grooves and glassy surfaces, and finally reminiscent, a horizontal, star gazing cut that encourages you to lay back and day dream in the grass.

( ps he still has all the patterns for the rx-5 from the original release so remaster, remixes and rereleases are in schmer s future, huzzah!) bpmf the original schmer artist had nothing better to do so he kommt back and gave us this track. we love to torture the engineer so we just had to include some loops: rhizome is the alter-ego of moscow wunderkind nikita zabelin. philly based hero/victim has been victimizing soundsystems up and down the east coast with his mad live performances. the wise caucasian is a pseudonym for some super famous london based producer and label owner, or at least thats what he claimed when i picked up his bar tab.

florian meindl surges ahead in 2017 as he returns once more to his home base flash recordings. he has been locked away in his studio and is now ready to unleash his new album ‘time illusion’. with these album sessions florian has created a special collection of analogue focused tracks which will be released on a double vinyl album and digitally in the spring. amalgamating his array of impressive hardware, he has refined his sound and crafted a selection of tracks that demonstrate intricate knowledge and mastery of his analogue equipment. his aim was to find the right balance between musical depth and sound design while interacting with the hardware. in anticipation for the lp release in early april, florian has prepared a unique live set featuring a modular system, the korg minilogue, effect boxes and a 909 drum machine which were used in the creation of the album and which he will be touring throughout 2017. electronic beats visited him in his basement at riverside studios berlin to record an exclusive live session, which you can find on youtube and his facebook page.

ashley woz westlake is back with a nod to the sounds that have inspired him. moving away from the moodier melodies of his more recent writing, new tracks celsius and grain mark an exploration into some new techniques and sounds. feeling inspired after listening to some old bits from the great terrance parker and kerri chandler, woz loaded a 909 into his rytm and a vox, bongos and chords into a sampler with the intention of working on his workflow and having some fun. the end product was celsius which was quickly snapped up by lobster boy and left woz needing a second track for the release. he wanted to roll with the similar theme of giving his take on an older sound, so using the same workflow on the drum machine and sampler he wrote a track heavily inspired by his love for electro.

originally founded by kisk back in 2009 apparel music set out to offer something truly singular in focusing their musical output predominately on jazz whilst venturing into its integration across the landscape of electronic music at the time.with a zealous release schedule, they racked up a healthy collection of eps between 2010-2015 from artists such as delano smith, scsi-9, sarp yilmaz and the label owner himself amongst many others. now after a year-long hiatus, the label makes a return with a slick 4-track va that fans both old and new will relish. strictly limited to a pressing of 200 on 180 grams of wax, their re-launch brings with it a jazz-suffused 4-track record featuring voyeur, ivano tetelepta & eugeÌne latumeten, kisk and kerem akdag. voyeurs swinging for theo kicks things off with organic, brushed drums and a walking bass line set off to a tight, swaying rhythm. glassy rhodes keys bleed into the mix ahead of piano stabs and 909 hats that propel progress when combined with a thickened low-end. ivano tetelepta & eugeine latumeten follow up with je suis reconnaissant a bass-heavy groove that lays soulful vocal samples over filtered piano chords and loose-limbed hat patterns. kisks just u then drives a crackly drum loop through distant, flexing synth tones. arresting vocal samples then take the foreground in a rich, smokey mix before istanbuls kerem akdags closes up the package. akin to the styles of producers such as henry wu and max graef, akdags friend melds playful drum patterns with thick chord stabs and smooth vocal lines that wrap up a stellar return for apparel music.

with previous releases on labels such as chronocircle and tom trago’s voyage direct, magnesii delivers a playful blend of house, electro and tropicana for raw tools. the title track, fata oasa is a melodic, lo-fi delight, full of exotic flavours, whilst building ultrabot shifts to a different spectrum of sounds, with chunky basslines and heart-warming pads. on the flip side, euphoric 660, is a haunting house jam with low-pitched vocal samples and sharp percussions. the b-side gets a special 909-led muscle boost by antenna, known for his dark, but emotional sound, which has been embraced by labels such as pinkman, clone and beats in space.

savage grounds return to lux rec for the third time, with their third record. atrocities comes after unpleasant music for unpleasant people, released in 2015, and over fences, 2014. it is, as much as the previous 2, the result of investigations in music, live, composed with a minimum amount of instruments. the duo, comprised of cco and daniele cosmo, worked with a roland 606, a roland 909 and a modular synthesiser. experimenting with fm modulation and loose sequences. the result is concrete noise, anger, ghostly voices, and above all, the sheer conscience of human failures. atrocities marks number 30 in the lux rec catalogue. it comes as a 12inch + 7inch package.

following 2014 s untitled 12 inch on the rush hour store jams imprint, amsterdam based faster action (this time a solo outing by interstellar funk) now surfaces on l.i.e.s. with a fresh two track 12 inch. stated as dj tools for the djs this is what we get here, with the a-side sounding like an late 80s industrial strength 909 driven ebm cut, while the b-side goes strong with a metallic beat track perfect for the adventerous working dj. 100 percent club approved! act quick!

after releases on fxhe, deeplabs, and planet-e, brian kage returns with “the arc ep,” a new record on his new label, michigander. “the arc ep” is dedicated to celebrating hopeful and inspiring times in the city of detroit. the arc - dark minor chord stabs emerge and echo around a solid concrete foundation of classic 909 style drum patterns and deep pulsating bassline hits. the structure builds until giving way to a break of lush symphonic strings that pay tribute to detroit in a nostalgic manner. the arc (stringless mix) has been crafted for creating and releasing cascades of tension in the darkest of warehouses. d drive – a saturated synth lead effortlessly bounces through two octaves in a classic groove that is unmistakably from an alternative universe where the 80s never ended. this feel-good jam will get even the toughest of crowds smiling and rocking out. transcending – this contemplative soundscape flings percussive hisses rippling through a deep melodic realm. an atmosphere of timeless synthesis provides reassurance that it was a great decision to come out wearing comfortable shoes and dressed to sweat.

the last and eighth release in this series opens up with christian wunschs remix of ex machina on the a-side which is all hypnotic bounce, roaring chords, cutting through the irrepressible groove. morbecks remix of ghost town on a2 is an atmospheric but tough interpretation of the original, kicking hard with jackhammered drums, coupled with metal scraping metal sounds and a simplicity that makes it a handy tool to build great tension on the dance-floor. the b-side kicks off with jonas koppss remix of miscellaneous pt. 1 – creatively pairing the heavy rolling 909 drums with a classic four-on-the-floor clap pattern and topped with the eroded drones of the original track. b2 is a re-mastered version of the utterly timeless and epic club hit “1969” by the mastermind christian morgenstern himself.
