wdsb06 kicks off with a classic in every sense of the word, the legendary producer, doc l. junior of tromso reworks a disco classic in a 909 style, followed by g.o.d. (grumpy old djs) from colombia reworking a latin 80s jam, then newcomer just baker bringing the disco house heat for a full slab of the b side.

some crate-digging compilations are often the result of someone hand-picking their choice favourites from another country’s musical history, perhaps unaware or uninvolved with its cultural lineage in the process. on this release - a treasure trove of synth jams, pop, samba boogie, balearic and electro from 1980 & ‘90s brazil - the tracks are picked by millos kaiser, one half of the brazilian duo selvagem, who are at the helm of throwing some of the country’s best dance parties. it’s a rare compilation that offers brazilian music actually picked by a brazilian.
this collection of sixteen tracks doesn’t comprise tracks scoured from deeply in-demand records, the rare sort that sell for eye-watering sums and that collectors spend years tracking down. they are the sort you’d find for a few quid should you come across but, as kaiser says, “the problem is finding them. they aren’t rare because everyone wants a copy but because no one wants them, not even the dealers.”

you won’t find many producers quoting plato - ‘inner symbols’ takes its cue from the philosopher’s words “music is a moral law. it gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, charm and gaiety to life and everything”. influences are many and all, ranging from colonization and african diaspora to korean shamanism, doug hammond to junior byles.

for ‘disco club’ (1978) i worked with a drummer making loops that were adjusted, to create the hypnotic groove that is so special. despite the fact that it was all recorded in a professional studio (in a suburb of paris) i find this a very ‘artisan’ disk because it was all done using equipment that we now consider “home studio”. my producer, jacky giordano and i chose to use nicknames for the credits: he would be ‘joachim sherylee’ and i would be ‘junior claristidge’. as for black devil, that was the end result of this change: an extension of me, a new character. - bernard fevre, 2015

dr. dundiff veröffentlicht muneybeats als teil der beats from jakarta serie, die mit alben von ta-ku und shuko begann. dr. dundiff (done different) ist ein hip hop & neo-soul produzent aus lousville, ky, der seit 2010 als produzent und mc aktiv ist. er veröffentlichte bereits ein erstklassiges soulalbum zusammen mit seinem partner otis junior auf jakarta in 2017, dessen nachfolger 2018 folgen wird.

blurt are perhaps the act who have played live at optimo more than any other. active for close to 40 years they are one of the uk’s all time great acts, phenomenal live and on record and supremely underrated. blurt mainman ted milton is a living legend. now in his 70s but more vibrant on stage than most artists 50 years his junior, he is a man of many talents, artist, poet, musician, performer…. in 1984 he released a solo 12”, “love is like a viol&#275,nce”, a no doubt accidental dancefloor gem completely out of kilter with any other music of the era that now makes total sense in 2017. dubbed-out stabs, programmed rhythm, trademark sax squeals and a more subdued than normal vocal that is strangely reminiscent of vincent price. thee definition of a cult classic and much in demand, side a of this 12” presents the a and b side (the equally outre “it’s only recently that stalins have begun to roost”) of this mighty 12” on one side of vinyl.
