volume 2 in trax new re-issue series chicago trax, delves deeper into the archives to unearth more lost tracks from the legendary chicago house label.

last year saw the mysterious garage shelter make their debut appearance on skylax, and little is still known about them! all we know is they are back with some freshness on the skylax classic sublabel. first up is bring back love, a track that will sink its claws in with that infectious vocal sample hook. sticking with the old school sample vibe is the lonely heart dub of attempt, it’s a bit more mellow but still has plenty of groove in it. friend of the garage shelter, dj la foudre, appears over on the b side with it’s alright (signal st mix). still on that catchy sample tip, it features one of the grooviest bassline and funky guitar pairings i’ve heard in a long time. next up, perception 66 is a smooth house affair from yet another friend, asa no hikari. rounding out the package is garage shelter’s own you (still), a dreamy pad-driven track that may indeed be the pick of the release. while we don’t know much about garage shelter, we can’t help but look forward to what they come out with next!

they say coincidence is a word with no meaning, because nothing happens without a reason. within this spectre of oddity and positivity, randomness or alleged fortune, the hamburg based electro pop duo me succeeds places their new album “into randomness”. the style ranges from house to hip-hop beats to experimental parte to pop music. all underlining the fragile, captivating vocals of front singer mona steinwidder.

christopher rau is one of smallvilles steady mainstays, with yamato he is delivering four tracks, that perfectly describe the seductive cosmos of smallvilles sound. there is nods to the past as well as a way to a timeless future. carefully evolving melody, voices and something caressing from somewhere far away- but within your heart in just a moment. its bubbling and telling stories from the inside but its still targeted straight to a dancefloor- dedicated to the sweetest ones of the world.

morah’s first release came from helena hauff’s return to disorder label and this time the athenian producer takes the same techno and electro sound and goes completely berserk for berceuse heroique. morah creates some huge waves of feedback on anarchy, which sounds like a techno version of metal machine music, then he takes the old school viewlexx sound and makes it even more confrontational, on you said no and impasse. looking back is a beautiful, melancholic - but still very dysfunctional - version of the death of a rave. one of the strongest points of this new producer is that his music sounds like the city of athens right now: raw energy mixed with manic depression and pessimism.

‘this is eleanore mills’ was her debut and only album, recorded for the sylvia robinson’s all platinum subsidiary astroscope in 1974. the album was produced by harry ray and al goodman of the moments and tommy keith of the rimshots. it includes some great crossover and modern soul cuts, including the in-demand string laden early soul/disco ‘same routine’ a popular killer cut and ‘i’m gonna get you’ another superb up tempo soul cut. ‘fascinating devastating man’ is a lovely mid tempo track. the album includes some beautiful soul ballads ‘he said goodbye’, ‘how can i love you’ and the heavily sampled ‘telegram’ which she rips up, plus ‘teach me’ an amazing near seven minute opus which picks up a heavier groove half way through.

matt karmil is a british musician currently residing in sweden. ++++ is his third album, following 2014 s pnn debut - - - - and idle033, released on bristol label idle hands earlier this year. his output also includes a variety of singles for labels such as new yorks beats in space recordings and stockholm s studio barnhus. on this new album, karmil can be heard exploring the concepts of impossible objects, reflection, symmetry, infinity perspective, truncated and stellated polyhedra, hyperbolic geometry, tessellations and lost love. while making the music that constitutes ++++ he interacted with mathematicians george pólya, roger penrose and harold coxeter as well as the crystallographer friedrich haag, and also conducted his own research into tessellation. the result is ++++, karmil s most clever, strange, emotional and fun work yet, a testament to his breadth and depth as a musician. did we forget to mention that he s an awesome party dj?
