talk of japanese soul often refers to enka, the sentimental ballad emanating from downhome bars and karaoke boxes. from the late 1960s, however, reverberations from across the pacific would lead to the nation’s own take on soul music as we know it in the west. some of the artists showcased on this compilation may not have been commercially successful but their legacy stands the test of time.

critics and concertgoers love his live performances and call him a living blues legend. record collectors of soul and funk 45s consider many of his early recordings on wax as a -must have-, some even as -holy grails-. no matter what roy roberts means to you, an album which collects his sought after 45rpm single tracks was long overdue.

the muggs presents the soul assassins (chapter 1) album was originally released in 1997 and is produced by dj muggs. it features tracks from a veritable who’s who list of rappers like dr. dre & b real, mobb deep, rza/gza & genius (wu-tang clan), krs-one (boogie down productions), goodie mob plus contributions from his cypress hill fellow band members b-real and sen dog.

ep consists of 5 tracks, 150 ltd entitled opposite reaction ep vol 1. the idea that makes up the techno of a european artist, confronted with the roman underground scene. stratosphera records as the possibility to its audience to expand their mind and their origins from the capital towards boundless europe.

a1 --aqua lifeforms- is perhaps the least intense cut on the record, a sort of a slow grower which builds up momentum by layering sounds and pads. a2 -body mover- is exactly what the title tells you. crunchy peak time tune for the dance floor, with shuffling broken beats wrapping around deep chords that hint what s happening on the flip side. b1 -doorway to her- is a nod to the classic deep techno chord-ish approach. well, sort of. the song lets you think that until the first curveball just before the half of the track. after that, it s just deeper than deep. b2 -pulsing hearts- is another well-crafted dance floor cut. the track moves from deep meditative vibe to subtle acid tripping, just to be finished with a proper bass workout. overall, we couldn t think of a better way to mark the 10th barba release.

what is this? this is a floor-friendly house record with three cuts by dj central. if you’re reading this, we feel it’s safe to assume that you buy records. so yes, you can own this and bring it home to keep if you like. all you need to do is pick it up and spend that hard-earned money of yours. why are we doing this? because running a label is about releasing music and we felt like this was worth sharing with you. no pressure though - don’t panic - take your time to decide. so whether you feel this three-tracker has found a new home or not, thanks for considering expanding your collection with a help record.
