dolphin dance is the second release by d. briggs on the brooklyn based -stray current- label. on this limited run of 300 hand-stamped copies briggs combines driving dance beats with rough analog synth tones to create a set tunes that will move the floor. the title track has also been remixed by wt label owner willie burns. on his remix, burns strips the track down to the bone and drenches it in reverb, giving it a darker mood and a pummeling melody.

deep purple’s 19th studio album sees the light of day. it is being released by the german based label earmusic. the band’s last studio effort dates back to 2005’s ‘rapture of the deep’ so this is a long time coming.
this will make album number four to feature steve morse on guitar and the third with keyboardist don airey. as previously reported, concrete information on the album title is, shall we say, up in the air. “there’s a big question mark over the name at the moment. and possibly an exclamation mark as well.” vocalist ian gillan told classic rock magazine.

continuing its mission to shine light on the genuine anomalies of 70s italian production music, finders keepers records resurrects another unlikely transcription disc from the vaults of one of rome s most esoteric library music archives! the mythical, mysterious and misfiled transcription disc of a lost italian demonic religious rock opera recorded at pierre umiliani s sound workshop by stefano marcucci - beat group veteran, fernando arrabal collaborator and libra affiliate. featuring members of the wider casa/ducros family and future federico fellini collaborators, this previously commercially unavailable mini-lp features embryonic minimoog, ecclesiastical organs and chorus alongside a tight psych funk rhythm section from italian library musics golden era.

two floor-smashing highlights from the gnarliest corner of the spectral sound library get a welcome reissue on the first limited addendum 12” to the dope jams nyc volume 1: 2005-2012 compilation. first up is futuristic acid banger “poison dart” by 2 am/fm, the double-headed beast of ann arbor’s d’marc cantu and james t. cotton. beginning with an eerie synth coiling endlessly around a shuffling, anxious beat, the track unexpectedly blasts off with one of the nastiest acid basslines since “washing machine.” commanding, otherworldly, and freaky to the core. on the flip, cotton flies solo and tosses listeners headfirst into his chaotic and terrifying “bizarre carnival.” pounding kicks, blown-out bass and frenzied synths relentlessly collide with one another, creating an endless nightmare of a world on the verge of machine-induced annihilation.

new york’s sheik n beik continue to assert themselves as a trusted outlet of chilly, understated techno following up releases from xamiga, keita sano and hermans with a va from family members ivvy, mr dello, og ag and ray rose. first up is mr dello with ‘pilgrims’ - a bold march that propels few finely crafted elements with deft usage of warped analogue fx. intensity snowballs throughout as metallic synths thicken before og ag aka andrew grant follows up with ‘410 prospect’ - an intergalactic transmission rich with bending synth lines. one half of dirk largo, ray rose then casts his eyes down in following up with tight, shuffling drums and buoyant synth tones all suffused with a healthy dose of dub before ivvy - a fresh alias from madison levine. originating from seattle’s burgeoning hardware scene, he offers up ‘shape speed’ - a languid, capacious groove that drives thick drums through dense and dubby textures that round off a solid addition to a catalogue continuing to go from strength to strength.

following on from his release on beneath s mistry imprint, webstarr inaugurates his de grey label with a three-track collection of bass-flecked techno. opener we can t have nice things evokes punch drunk and the bristol sound as skittering beats deliver a two-step-like rhythm, propelled along by a synth melody that teases a potent breakdown. meanwhile warsaw bumps along with a brooding bassline that gives way to multi-layered percussion direct from an eastern bloc steel mill. closing track exit changes gear to play to the floor as a piercing kick and clap drum pattern combines with the subtlest of sub-bass and sharp synths that probe behind your eyes to lift the track effortlessly in a 2016 nod to detroit.

we dont have much info to give about vicram, partly because the artist doesn t want us to communicate the few things we know. but this is his first ep. its super raw - not necessarily rough. raw like a piece of sushi, an unpolished unvarnished beautiful piece of wood, raw like those bare drum machines and simple acid lines. almost naive, like those early 90s idm-techno record we cherish but with a very different angle. as usual, we liked vicram because we dont really understand how he makes his music.

beranek’s debut album, “sound of danger”, was released on mind expanding records in november 1981. nowhere near as accessible as the previous single, the album fared poorly commercially. withdrawing from the single’s fun, kitsch pop, the album is cool and static, driven by thin rhythm boxes, cold synths, and glacial guitars. taking heavy cues from david bowie, all of the songs are sung in a nasally english accent, a rare occurrence in norway at the time. the lyrics are melancholic, but tinged with paranoia. there are also upbeat tracks that evoke a prog or glam sensibility a la king crimson, alan parsons, or roxy music. all songs have been remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. housed in the original jacket featuring red, black, and white lines that evoke a visualized richter scale designed by monica moltzau. each copy includes a 2-sided 8x11” insert with lyrics and an autographed press photo of beranek.

the königstuhl is the highest peak in the lower odenwald forest. at its top, an amazing view awaits you - over the neckar valley, rhine lowlands and on a clear day even as far as alsace. high above the university town you will find peace and tranquillity on the numerous footpaths. you can experience the surrounding forests in a unique way on the “via naturae” walking route or the forest adventure trail. on the opposite side of the neckar river, you will find the beautiful “philosophers walk”. in this area you can stumble over beautiful beryll minerals, like the one we used for our cover.

following on from releases by urulu and yaki incipient, south street return with their third release of sublime house cuts by flabaire. as part of the highly respected d.ko records crew and an integral part of paris house scene, flabaire s reputation has been steadily growing in the past few years. with a string of releases on popcorn records, organic-music, his own d.ko records and now south street, the frenchman is definitely one to watch!

master jazz pianist tenorio jr. aka francisco tenório júnior only recorded this one album, “embalo”, originally released on rge in 1964. rumour has it that he was arrested and thrown in jail (and possibly even murdered) while on tour with toquinho and vinicius de moraes in argentina in 1976. he has not been seen since...

love will remember pharaon de winter, it says at the very end of this record. pharaon de winter was a relatively unsuccessful painter from northern france. today its the name of a band, but also the name of the song that changed its authors life. the ex-leader of the bands toy fight and (please) dont blame mexico - the eps first aid and michel foucault, and the album concorde, in 2011, with the hit song the protocol - maxime chamouxs musical style could be placed somewhere between north-american rock, spoon, neutral milk hotel, and prefab spout and xtcs sophisticated brit-pop.

cold water, bad weather and a car packed with machines. best conditions to make a record. after two weeks, the reflections are three tracks, in three different ways but with many connections. the ep starts with “glowe” and technoid breakbeats, which are being controlled by heavy chords. “wiek” stays with the pattern of breaks but gets more emotional through various pads, which appear and suddenly disappear. on the b-side “spycker” finds his path, with the help of several percussive elements.

rye rye - real name ryeisha berrain - began performing at the age of 16, and a chance meeting with blaqstarr resulted in their 2006 club hit ‘shake it to the ground, heralding an impressive list of collaborations including diplo, robyn, toddla t, m.i.a. and more, with rye rye touring with the latter throughout 2007 and 2008 and appearing in the video for her global smash paper planes.

for many years, o, aka olivier marguerit has been considered as the best sideman of the french indie pop. permanent member of syd matters, he is the one with a complete background that always has been used to hightlighting and boosting the others. until one day he decided to to care for his ownself. after 2 albums confidentially released, known as o (ohm part 1 & 2), his first lp will come out 12th january. of course, it is about a brilliant and erudite form of pop. the album will be supported from december with many live dates, including the transmusicales of rennes, and the printemps de bourges afterwards.

before he was nigeria’s self-proclaimed mr lover boy, felix lebarty was an upcoming musician in the country’s edo-delta region. his big brother, aigbe, was a legendary highlife bandleader, but felix paid his dues playing guitar with thony shorby nwenyi and the collection of stars, along with fellow star mighty flames bassist, willy nfor. perversely, girls for sale was released after lover boy, the slick disco album that cemented his place in nigerian music history. it is a collection of tracks lebarty made early in his career, when his music was rawer and his pickup lines less sophisticated and less practised.

robo arigo is an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist from nigeria’s ogun state. a founding member of pogo ltd, he played bass, guitar and organ on both their albums and plays all kinds of instruments, including cowbell, on sexy thing too. one listen to the record, however, (and a quick look at the back of the cover), and it’s pretty clear that playing bass is where robo’s heart lay. especially when he gets to slap it.

in the early 1980s, nigerian was booming and recording studios used the oil money sloshing around to fit their studios with the latest state-of-the-art recording equipment. with the equipment came a new, slicker sound and a new breed of producers like lemmy jackson, jake sollo, tony okoroji and nkono teles who became bigger stars than the musicians they recorded. such was the fate of sony enang with don’t stop that music

toby tobias can be found in the shadows of south london. this is his first offering for the esp institute. on side a, gravitator evolves slowly over ten minutes from a somber intro of supernatural sighs, pulsing machine feedback and techno squelches into an ethereal landscape peppered with dissonant fragments of synth. with side b’s right turn to nowhere , toby stretches out even further, flexing a tasteful programming of the 808 while taking the long road to a reverb-drenched crescendo of distortions and expansive string swells. after a prolific output of material for other quality labels around the world, toby tobias has undoubtedly re-focused his point-of-view upon his induction to the esp institute. these two songs will have you locking up your children at night.

arbouretum has been called “the best of the millennial classic rock bands, a guitarfuzzed powerhouse.” the band, founded by guitarist and vocalist dave heumann, effortlessly weaves its melodies and guitar solos with often hypnotic rhythms of bassist corey allender and drummer brian carey around the deliberate keyboard of matthew pierce to lift the vocals. the results are a full sounds delivered with a striking sense of intimacy. throughout their time together, the baltimore-based band have been praised for their ability to weave elaborate vocal lines, and guitar solos that often unravel into extended improvisation, but never with as much fnesse as on song of the rose. in less practiced hands, these ideas could easily fall into contrivance, but on song of the rose, arbouretum use these elements to perfect their craft of storytelling in song, both lyrically and sonically.
