a complex web – the story of dive position and the shining path ... began in 1982 when peter miller (aka dr. william s ray – vocals, tapes, guitar) met andrew millar (aka maurice spectograph the nose-y pieman – program execution) in gold coast, australia. while sharing a similar taste in music, they decided to form a band, so dive position was born. equipped with a korg synthesiser and tascam 4-track recorder, they -wanted to have the sound of kraftwerk, the groove of can, and the menace of throbbing gristle-, ending up with -a cross of suicide and the residents-, as peter recalls. in a local record shop they met stig andre leonardson (aka vincent blackshadow), who joined the duo on percussion and drum machine programming. their motto was -now is then-. dive position then became the fatal charm around 1984, and the fatal charm became the shining path who eventually released their only album -basic training manual- in an edition of only 250 copies, most probably in 1986. the band then started to drift apart, and shortly after andrew sadly passed away – this compilation -now is then- comprised of previously unreleased dive position and the shining path material is dedicated to his memory.

man power has proven on many occasions to be adept at all manner of different moods within the hardware house canon, but on this occasion hes particularly focusing on creating an exotic feeling out of mechanical means. tropical bastard is a fitting title for this project for not an animal records, with the original steeped in driving patterns of rhythm and melody that approximate a flavour of far flung lands while mutating the feeling into something more club-minded. lord of the isles goes one step further with a remix that ramps the modulation up to devilishly wonky levels. tropical bastard 2inch is an entirely different beast that plays on a cinematic vision of tropical escape, but with an acid thread pulsing through it. then the frank butters remix finishes the ep off with a more submerged, but equally mischievous take.

london s weekend circuit imprint returns with a 5 track ep from label owner michael wells entitled three marks of existence. the ep marks michael s debut on the label and is a signifier of his future direction as a producer - meditative, tense, unfolding electronics and monochrome ambient environments inform this release. the deepest of deep space is contained within ep opener antecedent , an almost menacing, enveloping track that engulfs us during it s 5 minutes or so of existence. verge follows and is driven by speaker puncturing taut, tribal drum programming and swirling satellite sounds, creeping further into the nexus. subtly heavy indeed. ‘three marks of existence mines an altogether different vein, an epic, widescreen vision of downtempo electro that is damaged, on the fritz, but containing enough melodic beauty to retain hope. souls in the machines. weekend circuit acolytes yyyy return to the scene of the crime with a monolithic remix of verge that opens the second side of this ep, showcasing their unique style and interpretation of the original mix, and following on from their previous split ep with stanislav tolkachev and their own ep ‘intention of mortal’. ‘ilmatar leaves us out and leads you into the cold night, the final transmission from the ‘three marks of existence signal. fierce drums punctuate the night sky and barren landscapes while somewhere deep inside, memories are remembered. equal parts thought provoking and anxious, the perfect end point for what will undoubtedly be a formative benchmark in the weekend circuit canon.

doorly s reptile dysfunction continues to prove itself to be one of the most vibrant and singular labels around, this time tapping up legendary producer jaydee for its latest release. jaydee is a dance music pioneer. best know for the seminal plastic dreams - a track that, somewhat terrifyingly for those who remember it the first time around, will be celebrating its 25 th anniversary next year - he has continued to be a leading light in innovative house and techno productions, releasing on r&s and ellum audio in the last few years. here, he teams up with fellow dance music visionary doorly for a searingly brilliant release on the latter s reptile dysfunction imprint. acid pressure ep presents two original cuts from jaydee, with supporting remixed from doorly and trooko. kicking things off, back into acid opens with stunningly heartfelt pads before building to a killer acid line via shimmering percussion and erotically charged vocal snatches. bring the pressure is more direct: a house roller softened by basic channel-esque chords and with added rhythm courtesy of the accompanying ragga chants. on the remix front, doorly flips back into acid into something far more menacing, with fierce synths stabs and rolling drums creating a head down stomper, while trooko chops back into pressure into pieces, crafting a thumping main room house cut from the constituent parts, complete with an epic, piano-led breakdown.

as with his previous offerings - that have found a home on the likes of red rack’ems smugglers inn, horn wax, ruff draft, plus his co-owned end of label boss imprint – cyclonix continues to explore the deeper and more leftfield spectrum of underground dance music with a futuristic vision. made up of two original tracks, ‘alien drug store’ ep draws on a host of electronic influences ranging from deep house to detroit beatdown, alongside subtle hints of acid house and dub techno, whilst both retain the producers trademark sci-fi aesthetic. the release is completed with a sterling remix of ‘you’d better not’ from a pioneering legend of the uk underground - 4hero’s marc mac, under his nu era guise. heading up the a side is ‘you’d better not’, a slow-grooving techno cut bolstered by punchy kicks and a rubbery bassline, where foreboding sci-fi vox samples are interspersed with dubbed out chords and crunchy offbeat snares, as the arrangement shifts from one mood to another. the sub-aquatic vibes of ‘two face’ follows, which is set to a hypnotic two chord pattern, 4/4 kicks and a lashing of moody synths that gradually entices you into deeper realms through the aid of rippling hi-hats and rhythmic percussion with a submersed quality. on the flip is marc mac’s nu era take on the 12”s lead cut ‘you’d better not’, who transforms the menacing original into a blast of uplifting broken techno, where the soulful musicality of sustained strings and piano chords complement snippets of the original’s vocal sample that drifts atop adept drum programming, bouncy synth bass and a flurry of glistening synth melodies.

claiming a highly original sound that boasts strong roots in dubstep’s rich history, causa’s musical output delivers a fresh perspective on sound system music that holds true to tradition yet strives for innovation, a recipe that with undoubtedly help dictate the unwritten narrative of the genre’s future. with productions having already graced global dubstep labels such as surfase records, circle vision, fatkidonfire, artikal music and infernal sounds, this german badman continues to prove himself as a force to be reckoned with amongst the underground circuit. on top of his impressively nuanced and steady growing catalogue, causa’s productions have also received play support from prominent scene heavy hitters, with multiple tracks featured on j:kenzo’s rinse fm guest mixes as well as on vivek’s rinse fm mix and mesck’s chestcast mix. causa makes a bold introduction to sleeper’s highly prolific crucial recordings label with his new, three-track ep entitled juce (crucial013), the latest addition to the imprint’s standard-setting and ever-expanding vision for pushing multifaceted bass music. laden with laid back, minimalist vibes and understated swag dictated by massive bassweight pressure and infectious percussive patterns, causa’s release delivers the earthy meditation of dubstep’s powerful roots while keeping the energy dark, moody and forward-facing. each of juce’s three tracks: “minerals,” “struggle” and “juce” work together beautifully to orchestrate the creeping and commanding story of causa’s crucial ep, a story that sheds light onto the darker shades of dubstep production while simultaneously celebrating the significance of the genre’s foundation.

since four triangles was founded to release material from previously unheralded artists working in the space between house, techno and vintage rave, it seems fitting that the label’s second release should come from an analogue explorer still making his way in the world.

banoffee pies records return to their black label imprint with new label signees on part 2 of their second release with bpbl02.2. a three track journey through auto tune outer space with jay anderson on the a1, a minimal exploration from s ii p on the a2, through to an 11 minute tripped out rain forest track from peshka of ukraine with expertly sampled voices from the rivers of hanoi in bp style. music for pondering and thought. moody feelings direct from banoffee pies hq. farewell my princess. x

the third release by the paris based public system recordings knows no bounds or borders. a massive 2x12 inch compilation featuring the likes of fallbeil, innsyter, morah, buttechno and many more from the realms of heavy rust and wild animals. the heart beat of industrial noise resonating through weathered metal surfaces. psr003 is certainly writhing with wild tribal movement informed by the ferocity of feverish drum programming, waterlogged flanging and carefully degraded waveforms creating this fully engrossing and almost unclassifiable techno selection. it certainly puts an emphasis on the body aspect of ebm.

re-release of beverly glenn-copeland’s rural canadian new age suite for dx7 and tr707 …keyboard fantasies… with new carefully reconstructed glasswork design by alan briand beverly glenn-copeland is already known amongst collectors and music heads for two sought-after albums of folky jazz in the key of joni. but it was this album, originally self-released on cassette in 1986 that really caught our attention. the album, entirely recorded on dx-7 and tr-707, lies somewhere between digital new-age and (accidentally) early detroit techno experiments. the inimitable style of bgc here is both peaceful and meditative while simultaneously rhythmic and bass heavy. the album was recorded in the northern canadian town of huntsville where bgc was living at the time and is a beautiful fusion of personal vision, technology and place.
