wonder why is the highlight from llorca s greatly overlooked the garden album on membran records. with its curtis mayfield inspired vocals, live strings and 70 s guitars, it has all the ingredients of a classic song. who better to ask as a remixer than hot toddy from crazy p. he raised the tempo and energy and really made it his own. on the b-side, 2 edits of the original track from fred everything, using only the original stems, working the effects and sonics as well as extending the track both in original and instrumental forms.

sharif laffrey can charm the snake out of any basket. this is his first offering for the esp institute. side as tangier is a long drawn-out exercise, an endurance test of the highest order. over the span of some thirteen minutes, elements bob and weave intermittently and layers overlap haphazardly the type of exciting dynamic that s born out of restrictio as if putting down a live jam without enough hands to work the console, yet sharif perseveres. as touch and go as this arrangement may be, there is something that undoubtedly glues it all in place the combination of his massive rolling 16th-note bassline and his tough-as-nails drumkit is so good that, upon first listen, we spat out our tea and insisted on its release. on side b, everything is nice carries on with loose arrangement, dirty production and layers of inexplicable spoken word samples (a sharif calling card by now) but this time we re lead to a melancholy place, the blue comedown to side as antagonistic trial. with his esp institute debut, sharif leaves you mentally unhinged, as if youve smoked something interesting and arrived bewildered in some saharan labyrinth. these two songs will guide you through the medina to score the black meat.

prolific and long-serving canadian producer fred everything is never one to rest on his laurels, but it s been no less than 10 years since he last released an album (the classic lost together on om records). now he finally returns to the long player format on his own lazy days label with the appropriately titled long way home, a widescreen exploration of his sound via all manner of styles. there s gorgeous broken beat and neo soul, slow-strutting electronic disco and modern boogie, and that s just the a side of this expansive 12inch track album. warm, immaculately produced and unafraid of embracing pop as much as underground styles, it s a masterful return from mr. everything.

phonica is proud to present the song for mr. lewis , a new record from austin ato! austin ato may be an unfamiliar name to most right now but you will have undoubtedly heard his music before. the man behind the mask colin bailey - has a decade of music production experience under his belt using aliases such as drums of death, frankie dreams and the slumberjack. following on from his recent 12inch on futureboogie, phonica white unveils the fantastic song for mr.lewis ep. when it comes to producing electronic music, colin proves to be a dab hand at a variety of styles. his work as austin ato updates the classic house sound utilising live instruments drums, percussion and keys alongside electronic elements. at the core of song for mr lewis is a moving speech from civil rights activist representative john lewis on gun control in the united states, a message that sadly remains just as important to this day. on the flip, the dub versions strips everything back to the drums, a raw counterpoint to the deeper original, perfect as a dj tool but a powerful bare-bones track in itself. finally, the blissful morning closes the ep in style, with colin laying keys over the top of a dubbed out drum machine and bass loop that could just keep going and going. oh yeah! artwork as always is supplied by the talented pedro carvalho de almeida.

2 years ago, we celebrated our 10 years with 5 anniversary eps entitled 10 by ten, where we asked 10 of our favorite artists to write an exclusive track for the occasion. two of the stand out tracks were martin iveson - aka atjazz - leave me here as well as art of tones, koniokola, which we thought deserved a second life. freerange and delusions of grandeur boss, jimpster, blesses us with his deep yet driving rendition of leave me here, while fred everything chooses to update koniokola with a more dance floor approach and a strip down dub. we also included the original of leave me here which was never available on vinyl.

in what might be something of an unexpected reissue move, early rave belter -sweetness & light- from australian duo itch-e & scratch-e gets a fresh airing for the 21st century no less than 25 years after it first landed in a hailstorm of bright melodic lines and raucous tempo. in its original form -sweetness & light- is everything you could possibly want from an early trance stormer, all plush layers of harmony reaching an emotional crescendo over an irrepressibly bouncy beat. the -for life- remix meanwhile flips the script with a blissed out, chord-heavy version that slows the pace right down, possibly for the original fans of the tune who need things a little slower now.

a few years ago, melodies family members floating points and dj red greg got their hands on a couple of original 70s obscurities. while these standout records shone brightly in their own right, the two djs saw the potential to create their own edits behind the scenes, finely attuning the original versions to modern-day dancefloor standards. of these new recordings, they cut only five copies for themselves and a few dj friends of theirs. today, melodies international is very proud to bring you mel006 and mel007. fully licensed, lovingly mastered to the highest possible standards and carefully edited to dial up that dancefloor enjoyment, these two youÆre a melodyÆ classics werent originally meant to get official releases. but due to popular request, they are now available to play and share in very special moments at parties around the world.

danish composer the swan and the lake is at it again with his trademark widescreen soundscapes wrapped around eight new tracks of exquisite scandinavian balearica. with the release of his first album -moments- last year on copenhagen’s music for dreams, we were introduced to a unique artistic vision. with one foot in the ambient chill out spectrum and the other in everything from classical avantgarde, idm and jazz, the music of emil svane breum under his alias the swan and the lake is both very accessible yet complex. on his new album -clouds- we see him expand on those same ideas and with seemingly simple means achieve extraordinary strong emotions. opening side a, the jazzy intro of -fresh food- leads us into a sublime piece of hazy ambient groover that could easily be mistaken for a lost 80s production from japan. -clouds over Østerbro- keeps things playfully cool and adds elements of scat singing and xylophones, layered over breum’s shimmering bright chords. while the title suggests we are still on danish soil, this feels like a five minute vacation to a tropical paradise. guitarist johan liepstack makes a guest appearance on -summer in december- which comes off as an understated anthem that could break out into euphoria at any second, but manages to stay in a sombre state all the way through. on the track -plastic pacific ocean remake- we are visited once more by airy vangelis-like vocals which assume the role of a nurturing angel, guiding us to a comforting state of relaxation and healing, as breum lays down an overwhelmingly beautiful synth serenade with chords that hit you right at the core of your most vulnerable state. flip over for the mallorca inspired track -port d andratx- which comes in two versions - part 1 (sun) shines like a perfect escape into that cafe del mar/ hostal la torre sunset while the more deep and melancholic part 2 is aptly named rain. the gentle trickling of -waterfalls- sees breum mimic the eternal cycle of water, creating an organic and ethereal composition that stretches out seemingly without beginning or end. and finally on -heaven’s voice- we see breum in his most epic and emotional mood, as he steers us through a slow explosive force of cinematic sounds. it all ends with a heartfelt spoken word contribution by guest vocalist neonbi.

ever reliable canadian producer fred everything makes his first appearance of 2017 with a selection of choice remixes of house classics for the lazy days label. on the a-side he s taking to crazy p s -like a fool- a vocal and dub version and laying down a slick, bubbling groover that fits perfectly with the original s warm, disco-infused elements. on the flip, he takes on roach motel s -the night- and makes it into a shimmering nocturnal cut peppered with impeccable synth lines and a sleazy vocal turn. by way of variety the final track sees fred create a laid back balearic, auto-tuned version of franky selector s -wind swept dune-.

the remixed tracks from ascetic’s second album ‘everything is becoming’ are a collision between industrial techno, ebm influenced bass lines, doom and dark ambient. four berlin based artists: ancient methods, phase fatale, unhuman & luna violenta offer their take on the two opening tracks ‘utterings’ and ‘exegesis’ from the album. roared vocals, guitar both jagged, creepy and ambient, live drums and samples are all melted down and reformed into at times recognizable and at times wholly alien compositions, ancient methods, phase fatale and unhuman offer different approaches to techno punishment while luna’s interpretation is a cacophonous build that explodes into sonic abstraction. this ep is a perfect example of what berlin does so well, where genres that share aesthetic values feedback, overlap and inspire.

michigan artist john beltran s 13th studio album and 3rd on delsin is his most complete and personal work yet. written largely on modular synthesizers for the first time, it melts 90s intelligent techno with post rock and ambient with leftfield downtempo. the seventeen tracks draw on his expert knack for sound design, for melody and atmosphere and make for yet another hugely absorbing affair.

baba stiltz-on-studio barnhus is an ongoing series of records that both define our label and constitute a sort of independent, freewheeling sidetrack to its narrative. from the tempo-bending noise-house of his 2013 label debut our girls to this new is everything ep, his eighth original studio barnhus release, our buddy baba has never not amazed us with his unpredictable methods, rigorous work ethic and life-changing trax. on this particular record: icy techno soul, actual rnb, the real future funk! an opportune start to 17 for us and baba, who’s looking forward to a year filled with a variety of record releases, collaborations, dj nights and live shows.

claudja barry s cult -love for the sake of love- gets mike maurro s magic remix treatment for the 7th release on brookside records. this is no ordinary edit or reworking though, mike got his hands on the actual physical master tapes and turned in a refreshed, original mix of this sleazed out downtempo monster. well known by underground disco aficionados by it s inclusion on dj harvey s earth shattering and legendary -sarcastic study masters- mix cd from 2001 this mid 70 s tom moulton mixed number came out on salsoul and caused quite a stir. this new mix really breathes new life into this stone cold classic, mike utilises lots of alternative takes, vocal vamps and instrumentation from the original sessions giving us a version that s never been heard before! a completely new, original mix. if that doesn t get all you disco fiends excited then something is seriously wrong! on the b-side mike takes claudia s -sweet dynamite- into a new realm too, again using the master tapes to full effect to create a new, refreshed version of one of her more popular jams, a raucous, slamming club cut. also released in 1976 and mixed again by tom moulton, mike maurro s version extends everything in just the right way! his rearrangements and remixes are always respectfully executed and it s clear that mike understands and feels the tracks he works on. again, another cult disco cut reworked beautifully for 2016, essential stuff for all lovers of this kind of music, this release is simply unmissable. the record comes in a full colour picture sleeve and these remixes are exclusive to this release and are fully, 100% legit, licensed and sanctioned by all relevant rights holders. simply put, another set of essential mixes from a modern day master! file under - *essential disco*
