dominatrix is a synth-pop/electro project from the 80�s, best remembered for their 1984 club hit, �the dominatrix sleeps tonight�. the brains behind this new york city based project is producer/songwriter stuart argabright, whose other projects over the years have included ike yard, black rain, the futants, the death comet crew, the dystopians, and the voodooists.
the story behind this project began one night when a young stuart met a beautiful mysterious older women in a corvette while hitchhiking. they became friends, spending nights at her east side apartment, getting high and listening to bowie records. after argabright noticed the bull whips and manacles hanging in her closet, it became apparent that his friend�s occupation was chaining up, whipping, and torturing upscale manhattan businessmen (who were very willing victims and had the credit card bills to prove it). this project came to life because of his sincere admiration and respect for professional dominatrixes.

what ever not is the variegated music outlet from experienced dodi palese and dan mela, italian djs and producers supporting, selling, playing and releasing instrumental and dance music for two decades. what ever not tenth record, �galegos bar / the ritual�, sees a split release signed by dan mela and marco erroi. label co-founder dan mela inaugurates a new moniker �man dela� for �the ritual� - the original track gets remixed by anton zap, with whom mela already collaborated for a digital release on his own ethereal sound. flipping on the other side, marco erroi, head of common series ltd, continues his production career with �xxxv gold fingers� for the �galegos bar� side � one of the many different aliases he personifies - also contributing by realizing the artwork. �galegos bar / the ritual� offers two sides of the same coin and we can have both things with one stroke. the common denominator is the ethnical ritual. it is fully expressed in the man dela side with deep and hypnotic ride out turned upside down by anton zap with a dynamic electronic waltz. the same item, however, is magically hidden in the xxxv gold fingers side, where we can find it in the form of drink beer and play cards just like in most terrible bars in south of italy.

jäfar make a rapid return to the label and are back to grace the a side of fragil 019, while one half of the duo (elliot sindall) also pairs up with constantin nakov as seura on the flip. black mamba recalls certain aspects of jäfar s previous work on the label: the broken drum line, the subtle vocal samples and the global hypnotic aspect of the music. yet it is also radically different from marzsia. black mamba is a subtle but direct club track, aiming to get the dancers down through its heavy groove. the kick drum and low toms are strongly suggesting leg movement, joining forces with the snares and hats which call upon some serious head nodding.on the b side, white chapel is another broken beat club piece, but this time feels crafted for the afterhours. the groove is lighter and the heady feel is strong, closing the dancer s eyes and inviting them to drift through the music. once again, fragil comes up with original, well produced and highly danceable content, highlighting unsung talents for every versatile dj out there.

mr trum* wakes up at his manhattan residency a bit dizzy from his late night scotch and cigars with some right winged peers. after his classic raisin and bran breakfast, he decides to flirt with the raver community in order to win some votes for the upcoming elections. his decision seems irrevocable now, the first measure he will adopt if he gets elected is to build a wall of sound on the whole mexican border and start a macro rave under the premise of -we are all immigrants-. inspired by this extraordinary situation, 4 producers (hack force one, pau roca, scott ferguson & the enigmatic 3%) reached a sonic epiphany and the second ep of black money records emerged.

stockholms dungeon acid returns with one of the strangest, nastiest acid records to date.carnal knowledge is caveman techno, one chord hammered with hypnotic precision, a two-note acid line adding an air of polyrhythmic mystery. the heavily processed sounds of copulation comprise the bulk of the atmosphere, the whole thing feeling like an alien, updated version of lil louiss immortal french kiss. the instrumental version is a slightly swingin� variation on the same theme. dungeon acid principal jean-louis huhta is known for editing the sweetest parts from his hardware enduro-jams. the bonus beats title for b2 is a bit of a misnomer in fact, these are the sounds of mutant, futuristic lovemaking in all their glory, perfect for sexing up otherwise sterile dance music. get some!

chris �bam bam� westbrook is one of the unsung heroes of chicago house. his westbrook label was responsible for releasing a slew of quality records from artists like armando & mike dunn as well as his own productions. one record that mysteriously never officially came out on the label was �hot spot� from 1987, never making it past white label stage. here, for the very first time, �hot spot� finally gets a full release boasting all 4 alternate mixes of the track by the man himself. suggestive lyrics, chattering drum machine rhythms and uplifting pianos in the classic raw chicago style are what makes �hot spot� a special re-issue. harking back to a headier time, the record still slams hard today and shows contemporary producers how house music should really be done. a long lost, un-released nugget from the old school, re-mastered from the original dat and officially released for the first time with original westbrook label artwork in conjunction with bam bam / westbrook records, chicago usa.

if *the wanderer* was the record that brought romanthonys obscure blackmale label to a wider dj audience, *testify* was the release that cemented its reputation as one of the labels to check for in the us import section. here are brandnew remixes: jimmy edgar, in true blackmale style, takes romans original chops it in his sampler and lays the results over a thundering distortion tinged beat. it is proper raw jacking business, perfect for small dark rooms with a few hundred sweaty bodies. waifs & strays deliver a brilliant modern update complete with an air-punching sax solo (something that was definitely one of the nails in the deep house coffin the first time round and the kind of thing that could get you shot if you used in the 00s). illyus & barrientos deliver what is arguably their strongest remix to date dropping snips of the original over a quite brilliant bassline groove. ed one & boddenalso opt for some bassline action but add in classic organ stabs and todd edwards style vocal chops to their big-ass bass wobbler. lastly, we have the previously unreleased cd#9 vocal version which as usual, features one of romans deeper, more organic mixes.

mallorcas dakpa has been on a roll since amam released his debut ep last fall. he has contributed to several compilations, including amams own hand out series, kina music s fade to k pt. 3 and wizz vinyl s sonar sampler 2014, plus eps for labels like district raw and serial number 849. but amam gets the honor of issuing his first own vinyl release, the distres ep. the opening title track is an exercise in jacking minimalism, vibrant tech house with just the essentials, but more than enough to get the floor moving. then, ademus gets into a slightly more colorful groove, with tropical percussive interplay and some whooping voice for a humanistic accent (is that brigitte bardot?). on the flip, virgo gives a modern update to the frenzy of acid house. the title alone brings virgo four to mind. on that note, this one is an effective tool for warping minds and evoking spastic dance moves. finally, the dependable gaetano vinci a.k.a. hooved reinterprets ademus with a heavy dose of melodic funk and symphonic washes, making the track into an entirely new creation.

while some of you might think of planet rhythm as one of those old labels from back in the day, it may not necessarily be the correct judgement. not only is it a product of its past achievements, but it is also pushing things forward in the present time, with woo york being one of a few new artists emerging from the imprints recent catalogue. that said, 2014 starts with ukrainian duo taking over planet rhythm headquarters as the labels proprietors and getting in charge of all of its future development. first out of press is the duos own ep highlighting their shift towards brand new, hardware-driven studio setup. from abstract tb-303-ish structures of acid rain, through the building peaks of analogue swamp, a perfect example of stripping functional techno, to come closers uplifting trance-y melodies and the closing sequence of strobe 1, this record is shaping up to be woo yorks strongest release to date.
