for the past few years, young denmark vessey has been releasing a series of albums, both as a leader of carious groups and as a sideman in various others, which definitely mark him as one of the most exciting young players in music. vessey’s last album prior to this (2013’s cult classic) employed scud one for the rhythm section. vessey, in his own playing suggest that he may be forging a link between the new mainstream and prior innovations. it is to vessey’s credit that this album achieves a surprising degree of unity. there is little of the haphazard feeling that too often arrends blowing sessions by pick-up bands. it would be easier to mistake this for a group which works regularly. part of that is simply because vessey is a part of the new mainstream, the part that is seeking beyond the accepted common language to find ways of extending it. the rest is because of vessey’s unusual talent.

spilt milk return with their second release from mr spilt milk himself tred benedict. tred drops a tasty original track full of groove and energy, alot like the man himself. on remix duties, label favourite marcashken turns a wonderful interpretation and the awesome mihai popoviciu takes things up a notch with a classy techno work out. the final track is another original but this time in collaboration with label partner st. bernard, with the pair dropping a rather murky minimal number with some choice words from one of their idols.

the munich-based duo mrad is a full hardware generated techno project and delivers here the frst release of their label tuesday slump. their 3 track debut ep keeps all promises and shows us the widespread variety & full range of their work. the a side only comes as a heavy jacking bigroom foorburner. a mighty 303 bass line, hissy hihats & mechanical noises make this track to a perfect techno trip for the late night hours. resident on the b side is a rough and catchy cut whereas hazen takes us on a spaced-out excursion with its beautiful & atmospheric synths. this is raw, this is analogue, this is munich city!

following his stunning apollo debut album *water* in 2013, anton zap aka anton barbashev, the russian electronic pioneer returns to the label for another foray into his highly distinctive, deep and ever evolving productions. without doubt one of the leaders of the burgeoning generation of muscovite electronic producers, *subculture* sees zap building on water s seismic achievements, expanding on his trademark luscious house sound into verdant new areas. once again, as we ve come to expect from an anton zap record, the production is impeccable, with sounds ranging from the blissed-out hip-hop stomp of *free fall* and crunching beats of *one week*, to the slender, mysterious jazzy breakbeat workout *incident* and dubby space-tech of closer *pauspapier*. a vital release from one of electronic musics most original and singular voices.

rising label 04 is coming with a very complete ness ep which includes a ben gibson remix. >chronoscope< is the intro track that opens the release, a beautiful landscapes piece where ness shows his love and dexterity for the ambient music. following, >pantropy< is already starting with a heavy kick, far voices layered between the percussions and a sweet melody developing and coming up with that >trancey< touch that ness is able to do. on the b side comes >uchronia<, the track from where the release take the name, a strong broken track with shaped and dynamic percussions where some >chronoscope< landscapes are used flowing as the track goes on. to close the ep ben gibson delivers a classy >uchronia< remix going simple but effective, a perfect balance between gibson style and ness track that totally works out on the floor and makes the prefect closing track for that release.

title track joyride kicks things off with a straight up 909 beat, complete with scifi sweeps and classic wood block percussion, quickly working its way into an very subtle groove with every element working effectively to keep it fully funk laden. sideways completes the a side of the release and gets going right from the beginning. pumping percussion takes hold and hits the ground running before a perfectly weighted synth hook lashes over the top with henning playing with the synths lfo to creative effect. dust takes things down a notch as swirling pads drape themselves over a serious 909 beat. henning lets this one loop out, letting the subtle variations in the synths do the work as the 909 holds the beat solid and reminiscent of early berlin/detroit dub techno crossovers. mars attacks closes of the ep and does so in particularly fine fashion. a more broken beat affair this time from henning and he really works his machines into a sonic warfare of bass tones and tweaked out synths that sear through the crashing percussion workout.

shadeleaf continues, with a strident 7 out of 7 on the scoreboard! following a stunning (and sell-out !) ep earlier last year, the north easts answer to michigans finest, steps up again, with probably his strongest work to date. mannmademusic became known very quickly, over the space of a few low key, but expertly realised edits releases for the likes of glenview, lumberjacks in hell & diner city sounds. this ep sees him continue wearing his influences proudly, but re-imagine them in an altogether rawer framework - samples woven together, augmented and redefined, some of it following the classic kdj blueprint but laid out in a style thats all his own. those familiar loops submerged and unfurling, rubbing up against altogether more off-kilter but coherent workouts, sat alongside perfectly measured electronic jams all combining into an ep that stands head and shoulders above the competition. another shadeleaf sureshot!

now living in warsaw, donnell knox was well known, along with black nation s jay denham for forging a tough, distinct kalamazoo techno sound in the 90s. his label, sonic mind, put out some very coveted, underground wax that still sounds unique, extra rugged, and fresh. well d-knox is now on a bit of a comeback mission it seems, with some really inspiring new material, and “africa calling”. the first version, created to donnell’s much loved “spirit man” alias, is a soulful trek through layers of pads and emotive synth work. the simple, but uplifting, vocal snippet really gives it an organic and spiritual feel, the tempo is driving and quick, but the overall vibe is laid back and deep. remixes come from the likes of brooklyn based titonton duvante, who maximizes a synth pattern to a form a beautiful, reaching, version, while canada’a rennie foster channels his futago traxx style to present a full on tribal, drum based mix with added vocal pieces. also, detroit transplant, now living in canada as well, j garrett goes in with a very emotional, warm, string laden take. the ep is capped off with another version from donnell that could stand as it’s own track really, a totally different, but equally as strong, version featuring a driving baseline and detroit style string vamps. a really nice release, worthy of your support, from a well loved veteran of the techno underground.

now already almost a year has gone by since “inspiration”, the collaboration between jah wobble and singer pj higgins has come out on sonar kollektiv. with “chaingang (remixes)” we get a further renewal of one of the eight tracks off the album. for instance utrecht, netherlands based multi-instrumentalist and producer pitto gets down to work to morph the song into an eight-minute spheric techno extravaganza. some sort of a teaser for his upcoming album on sonar kollektiv later this year (although it will sound completely different). also releasing an album on sonar kollektiv in 2015 is producer marlow from weimar. his voodoo version of “chaingang” draws nearer to the original and incorporates the jubilee style gospel chanting to a hypnotically impelling rhythm. at the right time at the right place this remix will cause outmost frenzy on the dancefloor.

apartment returns with a release exploring 3 facets of house music all inter-connected by the vocals of uk soul & rnb singer, greg blackman (bbe music). steve leggets (four hands, claremont 56) original believe mix, the catalyst for the project, is an expansive 10 minute-plus journey through wistful dub lead by blackmans soaring vocals. on the flip mark hand (signals from the north) delivers a re-working, sculpting a beautiful, sun-kissed masterpiece featuring drums and percussion by darren moore alongside hands inspired playing on the rhodes and moog. to close out the release ncw finally makes a return to apt and subsequently gets lost in the dmz pitching and twisting blackmans vocals over a pulsating, bumping house banger.

limited nice price blow out ... disconet was created as subscription program service, which professionally selected and mixed disco music for discotheque djs, mobile discos and radio stations. disconet is called as the granddaddy of all remix services and provided mixed/segued dj dance sets, not only to make the djs job a little bit easier, but to expose club goers to new music. the djs spinning at the height of the disco era were given access to a new creative tool - a different interpretation of current dance tunes to wow club goers. originally, the disconet records were to be issued on a monthly basis which were limited to 1000 - 1500 copies of each volume. the first disconet record was released in october 1977. disconet team at that time was: tom savarese, bobby dj guttadaro and kevin guilmet as well as mike wilkinson. tom, bobby and kevin were dj legends, who had already been awarded with the dj of the year title by billboard. these greatest hits volumes contain their finest work, the original licensed disco edits of all the floor fillers of the time that have been re issued for your listening pleasure. expect many more volumes in the near future.

vectors 2 introduces another five new artists to the power vacuum roster: side one erupts with vacated, flinging heavyweight techno ingot *quadrat* neatly into ones medulla oblongata. a road tested club shredder, crashing straight in and out while unequivocally touching the sides. one of uk dance musics true mammoths jerome hill promptly receives the baton and lays down atypical workout *plastic jam*, an overbearingly energetic percussion / vocal rinse. on the other side, cosmic event cylob weighs in with *spyworld*. libidinal bass patterns, irresistible melodies and not a wasted note from one of electros most powerful minds. breakaway civilization of one: anklepants follows with *y.h.i.y.p.* after receiving a free bintus makeover - electro style. finally cornwallis spoken word effluvium *at the disco*, a charmingly rancid personal account to which the prancing oaf in each of us can surely relate.

the second molten moods release contains works by natan h, jonas friedlich, jonas yamer, einer weniger and mono.mental. like its predecessor this ep aims at creating coherence through certain types of grooves and atmospheres rather than genre criteria. the tracks are definitely meant to be played in a club but also qualify for sweetening your vespertine living room hang out. vinyl only release.

for skylax 140, damien zala, of rowtag records fame, brings the heat with a new 6 track ep. it kicks off with an absolutely mad remix of * looking for the sun* by detroit legend, anthony shake shakir. the attention to detail is clear when it comes to someone who has been in the game for so long, and the rework he has done for damiens track is no exception. * the final break* is damiens first original on the record. a skippy, staccato affair in both its percussion and its disco/funk/soul sampling. *beauty is back* is damien taking things down a jazzier route, with a piano laden jazz sample and shuffling drums to match.on the flip, * always young* is an audacious disco edit, sampling such a treasured song that many would consider untouchable, luckily, damien works his magic to make an edit which gets people moving without being obvious. the ep closes out with * emotions* and the original version of * looking for the sun*, barely recognisable from the anthony shakir remix, in the best possible way! sweet & dirty indeed, dont miss this offering by the one and only damien zala.

james freud is not the deceased singer of the australian new wave band the models. james freud is not a young art-school dropout with an affinity for electronic music. james freud does not live in berlin - he seems to come out of the blue and it is hard to say whether his production is analogue or digital, whether it is sampled material or sound design. because of the strange maturity of his work the tracks seem to come from both the past and the future. thanks to the digging-qualities of dj good news (who runs the hamburg poem-label) a selection of james freuds oeuvre is now brought to light through the 12inch 5-track extended play - to cut a long story short: mental futurism is wise optimism.
