the phrase *feux follets* from which archipel 105 draws its title, comes from the latin ignis fatuus, and translates as will-o’-the-wisp. the etymology reaches back to old folktales in which ill-intentioned spirits would cast an atmospheric glow at night, in order to lead weary travellers astray. today, the term refers to ghost-lights - artificial light reflections caused by decomposing organic emissions. anyway you choose to understand it, this music contains the mysterious and unattainable. feux follets are meant to depict an elusive (and perhaps also illusive) ambition. a tense equilibrium colours the constant, foundational sounds with aleatory movements. the compositions are detail-oriented, and boldly explore their tangential elements.

hailing from bari, nico lahs has become a beloved member of the stock5 family. on the latest instalment of the label that guy blesses us with his runway ep. but don’t mix up the title with some anorexic chicks that stumble along the catwalk heidi klum sent ‘em on. if there is one direction, it would lead straight into a planetary orbit. the opener “shreder” sets the pace and mood, a decent composition of pulsating synths, a vibrating bass line and a whispering voice, telling us to fasten our seatbelt because our next stop is going to be “orion”. actually this is in one of the biggest astral objects having been discovered yet. nico takes us there on his spaced out trip, while we are watching stars being born and dying in super novas. on the flip we’re finally approaching “runway” the title track. dive into a world that is undiscovered, promising and overwhelming. all in all this ep is way more than “mystic”, which is the last track. we left our planet as humans and we landed as androids in stock5 galaxy, which is ever expanding, crossing boundaries and creating new life on the universal dance floor.

rothmans are back with there first release of 2014 - coyote - the socrates ep. this time the guys are paying hommage to one of the more contriversial stars of the late 70 s/ early 80s the absolutely legendry dr socrates! this 6th release by the the retro, football mad, perm loving lot sees them take a step away from the various artists format into the world of ep s. and what a stomper they have in the form of the is it balearic...? boys coyote. featuring on last years claudio gentile release the boys are back on rothmans and in fine form with a mixture of psychadelic disco and funky balearic beats that would make dr socrates himself stand up and shake that afro all over the dancefloor. and joining them on the team sheet are a pair of knock out players in the form of mark e & ste spandex. mark e putting his silky skills, and attacking mark on passing memories, and then ste spandex bringing it up the rear and joining him in attack with a live vhs remix of act like you know. the rothmans label seems to be taking shape now and looks like it could be also putting together a dream team of releases

its time for local talk to go local again with another swedish producer, eric ericsson. with numerous releases out in labels like planet e, fragile and freerange he is one of those producers with one foot in the techno scene and another in the more soulful house scene. basically, he is not a one trick pony! for his release on local talk we would say he lands somewhere between classic chi-town house and thumping nyc house groove but without sounding too retro or washed out. its simply real house music!

the cellar boyz *pay me* is taken from ben cenacs timeless cozmic house ep on thug records. pay me which was recorded in 1986 is the only track from the cozmic house e.p that had available parts. the stems for deeper & deeper, seems to me & who loves you were never recorded. this was due to the fact that all of bens projects through out the 90s were tracked midi only at mix down, with only the vocals being recorded to tape! thug would never have had the opportunity to release ben cenacs cozmic house 12 inch if it had not been for simoncino. simoncino did all the a&r for the record. a gift not only for thug but any fans of ben cenacs amazing productions. with that in mind, simoncino has provided 2 remixed versions of pay me, alongside a remix from close friend nicholas!

mnenosyne was the personification of memory, daughter of gaia and uranus, wife of zeus and the mother of the muses, goddesses of the arts. also this time an excellent collaboration with an artist for whom i have great esteem tony scott aka edit select. because of the magic of art that unites the whole world, i have had the pleasure of getting to know him personally during an amazing gig in paris in which we began to design a collaboration on some tracks. after our first collaboration survivors of the pulse released on edit selects prologue music lp phlox we decided to continue with another ep of three sick tracks that i have given the names of three muses according to my personal imagination.terpsichore - to the he goddess of dance id offer this track with its controversial rhythm and detailed sensual overtones.euterpe - goddess of music and in our case seen in terms of techno music, a mix of pure energy and imagination and this track i believe has these two features. deep, straight and hypnotic. urania - this track i would like to dedicate to the goddess of astronomy

the main idea for the luxxury edit series was to take overplayed and/or uncool songs and turn them into tracks that i myself would want to dj. initially the plan was to do this exclusively using the sounds from the original multi tracks, rather than the typical throw a new beat and some swooshes on it kind of re-edit.

this record tells the story of a detroit groove from the perspective of the speaker, taking you through time from luomo s to the hardware syst3m parties, and the first leaky warehouse roof no way back where dean syst3m worked the door, with all the disrespectful nature one would naturally expect from a true detroit groove. created by two veterans of detroit grooves, bmg & derek plaslaiko, who now calls berlin home, in bmgs studio in the center of detroit. this song celebrates some of the out there characters and crazy cowboy outlaws that made this detroit scene happen on the underground level, that made such an impact that is still felt around the world today.

when the house music phenomenon was beginning, chicago djs like ron hardy and new yorkers such as frankie knuckles and larry levan would edit records for their own purposes, removing the parts they felt to be superfluous, concentrating instead on extending grooves and hooks, often adding their own basic synth lines and toughening up the percussion with what have now become classic synthesizers and drum machines. warehouse classics vol.3 holds 4 killer tracks going from obscure disco to new wave, first popularised at the music box and rarely heard anywhere else.

scenes from our classic future is the realization of three songs and two projects that came together as one. as young aspiring musicians since the early age of 12, greg paulus and john camp practiced playing jazz standards into the wee small hours of the morning together. eventually the two would find themselves both in new york under new and more electronic circumstances. deeply indebted to the mastery of herbie hancock, paulus and camp would reconnect, this time with synthesizers, and continue on their musical journey together.

the third album of depeche mode construction time again (1983) was the first one to include talented band member and arranger alan wilder to the mix. the album was recorded in john foxx s the garden studio in london and mixed in the famous hansa tonstudio in berlin, the latter being famous for its delivery of classic albums by artists like david bowie, iggy pop, nick cave and u2. experimenting with brand new instruments like the synclavier that allowed sampling to be manipulated musically, construction time again was a groundbreaking record that included industrial influences. these influences would come to full fruition on subsequent albums some great reward movlp940 and black celebration movlp947. songs like *pipeline*, *love in itself*, *shame* and *everything counts* turned out to become classic depeche material.

after 20 years of experience, gary martin couldnt resist a 12 inch that is also the 50th release for teknotika: a label from detroit that didnt exactly stick with the game when it switched to the mp3 format. *basking in blackness* is a composition of textured broken beat then classic four on the floor old school soul. *synthotika* is what would happen if a synthasizer could take over an orchestra. a track inspired by detroit peers no doubt. *every bit as beautiful* goes sensative deep house piano, a lil latin percussion and soaring eno-esque synths to top it off. the title is a bit sarcastic, let us face it, there is no life after techno!

matt obrien first came to our attention in 2005 with his off-key industries releases hidden high and serotone, which would later get a license on rekids. his first contribution for curle was back in 2007 when he remixed efdemins acid bells. in 2010 he made up the flipside to dozzy & van hoesens track on curle 024. after starting over in 2011, were proud to welcome matt back on curle for his second full ep. dont forget your scuba glasses, its deep!

an imaginary country continues from the trajectory of tim heckers last album, the critically acclaimed harmony in ultraviolet, while also showing a few new tricks. tim has incorporated more pulses into this work and also works with a sound pallete including overdriven mellotron strings and synthesizer. at times this album is less overtly aggressive than previous works, but the notion that this is pastoral work would be dead wrong as there are plenty of the agitated crescendos that he is know for. this music backs off from the void of immensity in favor of a terrain of lushness and warmth.

when luke solomon got in touch and said he wanted to work with local talk we felt both honoured and happy, especially since we have been fans for a long time and mats actually booked him to his raw fusion club in the late 90s. he has been around long enough to be considered a legend within the scene. we couldnt agree more. lost channels, a 130 bpm piano driven and punk-dubby new york inspired house track comes in two versions. the raw & stripped version is exactly what the name says, sharp snares & hi-hats, piano chords, a driving rhythm with lukes trademark percussion sprinkled on top. the live piano version is actually the original version and is peppered with more of everything. bubbly fx, more of that staccato piano and of course that muscular bassline. for remix duties it is the return of an old local talk friend, wil maddams. it seems like wil has spent some time in detroit since last time. this remix sounds like something that would come straight out of the d, his clever drum programming holds this track together with its deep pads and bubbling bassline. it is a retro (but fresh) techno jam for 2014.

booka shade are set to release crossing borders featuring fritz kalkbrenner from their 2013 album eve on embassy one / blaufield music. booka shade first met fritz when he asked them to remix one of his songs, as we are fans of his voice, we thought it would be a great idea if he would sing a vocal for one of our demos for the new album. he came to our studio with the lyrics of crossing borders and within 1 hour, the song was recorded. crossing borders is enriched with acoustic and chilling electronic tones and demonstrates the trials and tribulations of the every day struggle weve got to go on, even if we stray, crossing borders to another side

we have been a fan of motor city drum ensemble since the brooding and eerie >escape to nowhere< in 2007 - a track that sounded like someone had listened to > french kiss< on acid and then tried to recreate what they heard. so when we started re-issuing romanthonys classics with fresh remixes, mcdes danilo plessow was always someone we wanted to on the project. it has taken 2 years to organise this mix and now it is finally here it doesnt disappoint. taking on > trust<, most people would head straight for the vocal but plessow instead eschews that idea for a warm, low slung dub mix reminiscent of muzique tropique and early glasgow underground releases by studio blue. as a more dj-friendly alternative he also delivered a completely instrumental dub mix.

the new year starts with the welcome news that the cosmologist returns with episode three of the cosmology series. trip 1 started life as a tribute to 70s radical firebrands the last poets and their 1977 clarion call to arms, *its a trip*. a loose and ever changing collective, the initial line up was formed on may 19.1968 to mark malcolm xs birthday, having all met at east wind, a harlem based writers work shop. they took their name from a revolutionary south african poet keorapetse kgositisile who rightly prophesized that the talking would soon give way to the persuasiveness of the gun. continuing that thought, civil rights for african americans was very much the beat of the last poets, a cause they would champion and indeed, were not afraid to back up their mighty words with direct action.

selected pulls together material from mostly unfamiliar names like deepjust aquabeat, bassik grooove and bobby o donnell, alongside a couple of established heads like ryo murakami, aybee (as orion 70) and fred p himself, whose > n.y. (selected dub)<, a reshape of an old jazz tune, rounds out the compilation. > in the early days it was difficult to afford more than one or two records..< i would buy compilations because the value was greater and i was exposed to artist that i might not have known about otherwise,< he says. >when i think of compilations i think of mix the vibe, soul of science, trust the dj and of course dj-kicks. i learned a great deal from these series over the years and developed my own ideas based on what i love to hear thus selected was born. released soul people musics new sub-label, boards.

*it all started in 1974 with the purchase of my first mini moog and another 70s dream machine, a white mellotron m 400.* so starts klaus hoffmann of his 40 years love affair with the mellotron. moving from prog-rock guitarist to cosmic disco warrior in a space of a few years, the birth of cosmic hoffmann would lead to a number of classic kosmiche albums through-out the 1980s. before this though came space-disco. initially recorded in 1978 after endless late night sessions exploring the new realms of this free form electronic music, the first incarnation was recorded live to tape for a failed film project. an uplifting spaced-out synth journey, it was the later reworked version that would go on to become the lost cult classic. with added disco syncopation taking the track into interstellar spheres, it appeared only as a flipside of cosmic hoffmanns first and last single, *weltraumboogie*, in 1982. unfortunately the release did not make much impression at the time but has become highly sought-after for the more leftfield dj and music lovers in the years since. now fully licensed and remastered, the inclusion of the unreleased 1978 original will be only add to the collectors dream.

michigan native todd osborn, also known as soundmurderer, also known as osborne, also known as superstructure… ran the first drum & bass record store in the detroit area, the legendary dubplate pressure shop and would later own his own label, rewind records. todd has also built airplanes, computers and hovercrafts. or has he? at this point we need to just accept a mystery.

dungeon meat is the new label and production outfit brought to you by dungeon masters brawther and tristan da cunha. packing a serious punch, its aim is to present tracks designed specifically to rock the party and shake the sound system. originally conceived as a platform for their own musical visions it soon became apparent that they would have to open the doors to a select few who shared their ambition to make no messing, hard hitting house grooves. one of these artists is the mysterious blunt instruments who has the honour of kicking off the label. after road testing his huge club hammer hold back brawther and da cunha knew it had to be on dungeon meat as it epitomised exactly the sound they wanted to present. hold back has been a firm fixture in their sets and even got cut to dubplate by jeremy underground paris. its not all about the a-side though as blunt instruments craft 2 other killer club cuts for the flip side we wont go on too much trying to describe how good this ep is ... instead well let the music do the talking

quite simply, mike storms one target is one of my favourite techno tracks of this year. intense, funky, hypnotic, this is a total bomb. full support in the clubs and charting on ra and juno. thought it would be hard to follow up binnys millsian madness but this release fucking rocks mate, cant wait to get it on vinyl

with david mayers share of keinemusiks current workparty edition still providing solid fuel for heated clubfloors, he already shovelstwo fresh loads into the furnace. km021 has just surfaced in a moment when electrified techno-music seems to drown in an ocean of preset-dullness. well, mayer has come to provide a rescue tool with his sunhole on side a. youll recognize this somewhat trademark-becoming percussive fetish of mayer as this tracks modus operandi. yet, it has rarely been as detailed and surgically implemented as in this banger. whats that – a second hand ticking? and over there – is it a woodpecker in the field? sunhole supplies all the answers in a thumping, yet no friskiness avoiding manner. youll get a stoically rolling beat, asphalting the floor, to build a cannonproof foundation for thisarrangements main attraction – a filtered and delay-heavy synth-affair.flip around and find a competitive jamboree of subtle background-brainwaves other would straightaway use as lead-ideas for their tracks. well, this matchingly titled lead comes in with a hard hitting kick and gets into the groove via filter-rides to peak into clanking noisy industrial-thunder that immediately will electrify every steel-toe in hearing range. generally - only roughness in this cut, crispy bounce and ghostly whispers all over. most definitely for the win, this double broadside.

what might happen if one would tuck the moulin rouge in a london warehouse, banned the glitter, burned down the tinsel and raised the volume the debut album of hamburg based clark davis is exactly showing that, seducing by every trick in the book with irresistible, easy going grooves and nasty beats

the cronenberg referencing crimes of the future label from messrs. fairplay and fraser gathers further pace on their second release, looking across the atlantic and focussing on the enigmatic works of elizabeth merrick jefferson. from her detroit base, jefferson has one previous release to call on in the shape of the urban off road 12 inch for the argot label. the promise demonstrated there is explored further within the context of this four track quetzalcoatl 12 inch for cotf, expounding colourful take on detroit house filled with rich star gazing qualities that would attract the attention of timothy and scott.

hip hop did not develop in a vacuum - its roots can be traced back to the earliest afro-american music, and the folks who were influenced by these sounds along the way. this lp compiles some of the great recordings that showcase the spoken word and street culture put forth from the 1920s through the 1960s that would go on to influence the entire rap music genre. the themes will be familiar - religion, politics, black experience, badass gangsta rap, speed, sex, drugs and rock n roll. lets listen to the lessons that the hipsters of the past taught the rappers of today.

block rocking, pop locking lonely c and baby prince are at it again with their latest fraiche ep on soul clap records. the troublemaking two-some take us back to 2011. it was a weekend in late august and new york city was practically under martial law. news tickers warned frightened citizens that a hurricane called irene would strike at any minute, flooding most of manhattan and williamsburg where the boys sat gleefully snacking and talking shit inside the world famous marcy hotel. with all airplanes grounded and the trains halted it became clear that lc & bp were going nowhere. it began to rain, the wind picked up and as the skies darkened, nyc declared a state of emergency.

the legendary mark reeve delivers his very first techno ep on mb elektronics. starting this ep is the metamorph. definitely would be one of the highlight releases of this year. it features an exquisite and devastating bassline.

tis the season to remain anonymous it seems. the guessing games continue here with the unknown prankster. we cant tell you who it is, because that would render the artists chosen title useless. and he might be slightly miffed at. if it is even a he ... what you do need to know is that these two tight little magic numbers should not be missed! we will leave you with the clips so you can make your own mind up ... needless to say, you might recognise one or two things here.

jorge bule , the iberian artist ushers in dubby basslines but drowns them in shards of metal. you would be forgiven for thinking this was dub techno, or even electronica. epic_deep

marcel vogels lumberjacks in hell welcome the disco master al kent into the fold with the two track yes i cant 12 inch. al kent is a true original. not interested in anything but disco. dying his hair in a truly unique fashion, to match the sparkle of disco balls and having recently hired an octopus to help him chop up those records. both *yes i do* and *cant stop* highlight the glaswegians importance to keeping the true spirit of disco alive, deftly and tightly edited in a manner that would impress messrs hardy and gibbons were they alive today.

there are certain moments and event that can redefine a nation and a culture. the 1987 1988 acid house explosion was such a moment in our time that it did capture a nation and a forged a new era in modern music. acid was such a taboo in the late 80s in the uk that law officials thought that the music insight mass use of acid and everyone would space out, and that was far from the truth. but what is true that some guys from chicago created a sound that the world einbraced and continues to embrace to this day.

for its fifth release, brstl continues on its mission to unearth fresh and exciting artists from bristols electronic music scene, this time showcasing the debut release from idle hands employee shanti celeste. regular clubgoers in the city will have almost certainly heard her display her penchant for heavily swung rhythms in her dj sets, and her 12-inch for brstl manages to distil this passion into two elegantly produced house music groovers. recently unveiled on outboxxs podcast for resident advisor, the soulful new jersey-esque skip of >need your lovin< (baby) takes up the a-side, its gliding rhodes chords and playful melodies being propelled by a tough and irresistably funky beat that kerri himself would be proud of. over on the flipside, >result!< offers up a more heads-down vibe, channelling those swung beats into an upbuilding, synth-smeared house jam.

after the vocal treatments and acid lines of tallmen 001, moog feedback comes rumbling through as tallmen 002 kicks in. multi joins as a co-producer for d220 ghosts of guitar and synth lines weave in and out as it picks up momentum, the kick drum planted firmly in the chest plate and swirling high-hats complete this burner of a track. floating ground returns to acid but not as one would expect. a simple melody turns into a strange animal, flying at once into outer-space then landing squarely on the 1, this is not your average acid tune.

in the 1970s the american composer henry flynt started a series of pieces under the title >new american ethnic music<. in so doing he worked together native styles of music such as blues, country or hillbilly with electronic production methods to make something altogether new. so far in germany it has never been attempted to rework folklore electronically for a compilation. however, this picture changes if one redefines the idea of who the population is. incomers have brought new >national anthems< to germany, which means - even the portuguese fado, the african gnawa, the croatian klapa or the vietnamese quan ho are these days at home in germany. with the cultural project >heimatlieder aus deutschland< (native songs from germany) founded by former spex editor mark terkessidis and label manager jochen kühling all the various styles of traditional folk music now found in germany has been collected. thirteen of the songs recorded for the project have now been transformed by contemporary electronic producers to present a >new german ethnic music<. but why remixes? for one thing electronic music has recently focused a lot on the past (ghost music, hypnagogic pop etc.) – electronic editing is well suited to follow the effects of the immigrant music which the >imaginary national anthems< has created. furthermore the projects instigators were curious how >electronic musicians< would handle folk music and folk songs which is a hugely difficult task. to this end artists were sought out who could get along with the idea of each music style and who are known to already have experimented with the human voice. the results are as varied as the music styles and djs involved. some melodies remain completely intact while others are abstracted beyond recognition. margaret dygas associative approach ensured that she presents a polish song about a girls arranged marriage with a claustrophobic feeling. with his remix of the marrabenta of mozambique mark ernestus has continued the rhythmic experiments he is known for with jeri jeri. thomas mahmoud translated gnawa into dub and finaly ulrich schnauss turned the song of the italian chorus of >donni so< into a hymn for the horizon-expanding power of migration.hopefully this compilation will also expand some horizons.
